- AR Mon photometry and radial velocities
- Short Name:

- Description:
- New differential UBV photoelectric photometry and echelle spectroscopy for the eclipsing binary AR Mon are presented. A total of 46 radial velocities for each component are obtained using the TODCOR procedure. We solve the new and previously published multicolor light curves simultaneously with the new radial velocities using the latest version of the Wilson-Devinney program. We confirm that AR Mon is a semidetached binary consisting of two evolved giant stars and is a member of the rare class of "cool Algols".

- ASAS detached eclipsing binaries parameters
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/400/969
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We derive the absolute physical and orbital parameters for a sample of 18 detached eclipsing binaries from the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) data base based on the available photometry and our own radial velocity (RV) measurements. The RVs are computed using spectra we collected with the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and its University College London Echelle Spectrograph (UCLES), and the 1.9-m Radcliffe telescope and its Grating Instrument for Radiation Analysis with a Fibre-Fed Echelle (GIRAFFE) at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). In order to obtain as precise RVs as possible, most of the systems were observed with an iodine cell available at the AAT/UCLES and/or analysed using the two-dimensional cross-correlation technique (TODCOR). The RVs were measured with TODCOR using synthetic template spectra as references.

- AS 78 & MWC 657 spectroscopy

- Description:
- We present the results of low- and high-resolution spectroscopic and multicolour photometric observations of two early-type emission-line stars, AS 78 and MWC 657. They were identified by Dong & Hu (1991ChA&A..15..275D) with the IRAS sources 03549+5602 and 22407+6008, respectively, among many other sources displaying a very strong infrared excess, V-[25]>=8mag. AS 78 is recognized as a photometric variable for the first time. A large near-IR excess radiation is detected in AS 78 and confirmed by new, higher-quality, data for MWC 657. Significant variations in the Balmer line profiles are detected for both objects. Modelling of the Balmer line profiles of AS 78 obtained in 1994 yields the following parameters of the star and its wind: T_eff_~17000K, logL_bol_/L_{sun}_~4.0, dM/dt~10^-6^M_{sun}_/yr. The photometric and new spectroscopic data indicate that the star's T_eff_ increases with time, while the stellar wind changes its structure. Distances towards both objects are estimated on the basis of their radial velocities and the galactic rotation curve. Consideration of different options about the nature and evolutionary state of both objects leads us to suggest that they are binary systems containing a B-type intermediate-luminosity star and a gaseous disk around the less luminous component.

- A spectroscopic orbit for Regulus
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/682/L117
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a radial velocity study of the rapidly rotating B star Regulus that indicates the star is a single-lined spectroscopic binary. The orbital period (40.11 days) and probable semimajor axis (0.35AU) are large enough that the system is not interacting at present. However, the mass function suggests that the secondary has a low mass (M_2_>0.30M_{sun}_), and we argue that the companion may be a white dwarf. Such a star would be the remnant of a former mass donor that was the source of the large spin angular momentum of Regulus itself.

- A spectroscopic survey of field RHB stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/155/240
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A metallicity, chemical composition, and kinematic survey has been conducted for a sample of 340 candidate field red horizontal-branch (RHB) stars. Spectra with high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio were gathered with the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m Tull and the Hobby-Eberly Telescope echelle spectrographs, and were used to determine effective temperatures, surface gravities, microturbulent velocities, [Fe/H] metallicities, and abundance ratios [X/Fe] for seven {alpha} and Fe-group species. The derived temperatures and gravities confirm that at least half of the candidates are true RHB stars, with (average) parameters T_eff_~5000 K and log g~2.5. From the {alpha} abundances alone, the thin and thick Galactic populations are apparent in our sample. Space motions for 90% of the program stars were computed from Hipparcos and Gaia parallaxes and proper motions. Correlations between chemical compositions and Galactic kinematics clearly indicate the existence of both thin-disk and thick-disk RHB stars.

- A stellar rotation census of B stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/722/605
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Two recent observing campaigns provide us with moderate dispersion spectra of more than 230 cluster and 370 field B stars. Combining them and the spectra of the B stars from our previous investigations (~430 cluster and ~100 field B stars) yields a large, homogeneous sample for studying the rotational properties of B stars. We derive the projected rotational velocity vsini, effective temperature, gravity, mass, and critical rotation speed V_crit_ for each star. We compare the evolutionary trends of rotation (measured according to the polar gravity of the star) with recent models that treat internal mixing.

- ASTRAL: reference spectra for evolved M stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/869/157
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program Advanced Spectral Library Project: Cool Stars was designed to collect representative, high-quality UV spectra of eight evolved F-M type cool stars. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) echelle spectra of these objects enable investigations of a broad range of topics, including stellar and interstellar astrophysics. This paper provides a guide to the spectra of the two evolved M stars, the M2 Iab supergiant {alpha}Ori and the M3.4 giant {gamma}Cru, with comparisons to the prototypical K1.5 giant {alpha}Boo. It includes identifications of the significant atomic and molecular emission and absorption features and discusses the character of the photospheric and chromospheric continua and line spectra. The fluorescent processes responsible for a large portion of the emission-line spectrum, the characteristics of the stellar winds, and the available diagnostics for hot and cool plasmas are also summarized. This analysis will facilitate the future study of the spectra, outer atmospheres, and winds, not only of these objects but of numerous other cool, low-gravity stars, for years to come.

- Description:
- We present results from a campaign of multiple-epoch echelle spectroscopy of relatively faint (V=9.5-13.5mag) red giants observed as potential astrometric grid stars for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM PlanetQuest). Data are analyzed for 775 stars selected from the Grid Giant Star Survey, spanning a wide range of effective temperatures (Teff), gravities, and metallicities. The spectra are used to determine these stellar parameters and to monitor radial velocity (RV) variability at the 100m/s level.

- Astrometric Grid Giant Star Survey. III.
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/140/1911
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present results of high-resolution (~55000) spectral observations of 830 photometrically pre-selected candidate red giants in the magnitude range of V=9-12. We develop a pipeline for automated determination of the stellar atmospheric parameters from these spectra and estimate Teff, logg, [Fe/H], microturbulence velocity, and projected rotational velocities, vsin i, for the stars. The analysis confirms that the candidate selection procedure yielded red giants with very high success rate. We show that most of these stars are G and K giants with slightly subsolar metallicity ([Fe/H]~-0.3dex). An analysis of Mg abundances in the sample results in consistency of the [Mg/Fe] vs [Fe/H] trend with published results.

- Astrometric Radial Velocities. III.
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/381/446
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Astrometrically determined kinematic data are given for nearby clusters and associations, including astrometric radial velocities and kinematically improved parallaxes for individual stars. The astrometric radial velocities are determined independent of spectroscopy. Table 1 gives the space velocities and internal velocity dispersions of the clusters and associations. The electronic Table1 (Table1.dat) is an extended version of Table 1 in the journal paper, now including the full covariances of the space velocity components as well as the space motion in spherical coordinates. Table 2 gives the astrometric radial velocities and kinematically improved parallaxes for the individual stars. The electronic Table 2 is an extended version of Table 2 in the journal paper, now including all clusters and associations studied; results using data from both the Hipparcos and Tycho-2catalogues, as well as the standard errors for all deduced quantities. The electronic Table 2 is divided into 10 sub-tables (table1a.dat through table2j.dat), one for each cluster or association.
