- The vast diversity of planetary systems detected to date is defying our capability of understanding their formation and evolution. Well-defined volume-limited surveys are the best tool at our disposal to tackle the problem, via the acquisition of robust statistics of the orbital elements. We are using the HARPS spectrograph to conduct our survey of 850 nearby solar-type stars, and in the course of the past nine years we have monitored the radial velocity of HD 103774, HD 109271, and BD-061339. In this work we present the detection of five planets orbiting these stars, with msini between 0.6 and 7 Neptune masses, four of which are in two multiple systems, comprising one super-Earth and one planet within the habitable zone of a late-type dwarf. Although for strategic reasons we chose efficiency over precision in this survey, we have the capability to detect planets down to the Neptune and super-Earth mass range as well as multiple systems, provided that enough data points are made available.

- Fewer giants planets are found around M dwarfs than around more massive stars, and this dependence of planetary characteristics on the mass of the central star is an important observational diagnostic of planetary formation theories. In part to improve on those statistics, we are monitoring the radial velocities of nearby M dwarfs with the HARPS spectrograph on the ESO 3.6m telescope. We present here the detection of giant planets around two nearby M0 dwarfs: planets, with minimum masses of respectively 5 Jupiter masses and 1 Saturn mass, orbit around Gl 676A and HIP 12961.

- Nearly 400 Tycho-2 (Cat. <I/259>) stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effective temperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as well as distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants and span typical distances from 200pc to 800pc to the galactic mid-plane. This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is used to investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars.

- We have obtained adaptive optics images and accurate radial velocities for 7 very low mass objects, In the course of a long term effort to determine accurate masses for very low mass stars (M<0.6 M{sun}). We use the new data, together with measurements from the literature for some stars, to determine new or improved orbits for these 7 systems. They provide masses for 16 very low mass stars with accuracies that range between 0.2% and 5%, and in some cases a very accurate distance as well. This information is used in a companion paper to discuss the Mass-Luminosity relation for the V, J, H and K photometric bands.

- We explore the kinematics and orbital properties of a sample of 323 very metal-poor stars in the halo system of the Milky Way, selected from the high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up studies of Aoki et al. (2013, J/AJ/145/13) and Yong et al (2013, J/ApJ/762/26). The combined sample contains a significant fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars (22% or 29%, depending on whether a strict or relaxed criterion is applied for this definition). Barium abundances (or upper limits) are available for the great majority of the CEMP stars, allowing for their separation into the CEMP-s and CEMP-no subclasses. A new method to assign membership to the inner- and outer-halo populations of the Milky Way is developed, making use of the integrals of motion, and applied to determine the relative fractions of CEMP stars in these two subclasses for each halo component. Although limited by small-number statistics, the data suggest that the inner halo of the Milky Way exhibits a somewhat higher relative number of CEMP-s stars than CEMP-no stars (57% versus 43%), while the outer halo possesses a clearly higher fraction of CEMP-no stars than CEMP-s stars (70% versus 30%). Although larger samples of CEMP stars with known Ba abundances are required, this result suggests that the dominant progenitors of CEMP stars in the two halo components were different; massive stars for the outer halo, and intermediate-mass stars in the case of the inner halo.

- We study the properties of galaxies with very thin discs (VTDs) using a sample of 85 objects whose stellar disc radial-to-vertical scale ratio determined from photometric decomposition, exceeds 9. We present evidences of similarities between the VTD galaxies and low surface brightness (LSB) disc galaxies, and conclude that both small and giant LSB galaxies may reveal themselves as VTD, edge-on galaxies. Our VTD galaxies are mostly bulgeless, and those with large radial scalelength tend to have redder colours. We performed spectral observations of 22 VTD galaxies with the Dual Imaging Spectrograph on the 3.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory. The spectra with good resolution (R~5000) allow us to determine the distance and the ionized gas rotation curve maximum for the galaxies. Our VTD galaxies have low dust content, in contrast to regular disc galaxies. Apparently, VTD galaxies reside in specific cosmological low-density environments and tend to have less connection with filaments. Comparing a toy model that assumes marginally low star formation in galactic discs with obtained gas kinematics data, we conclude that there is a threshold central surface density of about 88M_{sun}_/pc^2^, which we observe in the case of very thin, rotationally supported galactic discs.

- We present spectral classifications for 438 B-type stars observed as part of the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Radial velocities are provided for 307 apparently single stars, and for 99 targets with radial-velocity variations which are consistent with them being spectroscopic binaries. We investigate the spatial distribution of the radial velocities across the 30 Dor region, and use the results to identify candidate runaway stars. Excluding potential runaways and members of two older clusters in the survey region (SL639 and Hodge301), we determine a systemic velocity for 30 Dor of 271.6+/-12.2km/s from 273 presumed single stars. Employing a 3{sigma} criterion we identify nine candidate runaway stars (2.9% of the single stars with radial-velocity estimates). The projected rotational velocities of the candidate runaways appear to be significantly different to those of the full B-type sample, with a strong preference for either large (>=345km/s) or small (<=65km/s) rotational velocities. Of the candidate runaways, VFTS358 (classified B0.5: V) has the largest differential radial velocity (-106.9+/-16.2km/s), and a preliminary atmospheric analysis finds a significantly enriched nitrogen abundance of 12+log(N/H)> 8.5. Combined with a large rotational velocity (v_e_sini=345+/-22km/s), this is suggestive of past binary interaction for this star.

- The orbit and physical parameters of the previously unsolved double-lined eclipsing binary Tyc 5227-1023-1, discovered during the search for RR Lyr variable candidate members of the Aquarius stream, are derived using high-resolution echelle spectroscopy and V,i' photometry. A synthetic spectral analysis of both components has been performed, yielding metallicity [M/H]=-0.63+/-0.11 for both stars and a temperature for the secondary that is in close agreement with the one from the orbital solution, while the temperature of the primary is determined from photometry (T_1_=6350K). The masses and radii (M_1_=0.96+/-0.02, M_2_=0.84+/-0.01M_{sun}_, R_1_=1.39+/-0.01, R_2_=0.98+/-0.01R_{sun}_) reveal that both stars have already slightly evolved away from the main-sequence band, having an age of about 7Gyr, and the results of the synthetic spectral analysis support the claim of corotation with the orbital motion. The radial velocity of the system is -60+/-2km/s, while its distance, computed from orbital parameters and the derived reddening E_B-V_=0.053, is 496+/-35pc. Even though Tyc 5227-1023-1 was initially treated as a possible member of the Aquarius stream, the results presented here disagree with reported values for this ancient structure and suggest a likely membership of the thick disk.

- We present results from ground based VLT/FLAMES spectroscopy in combination with HST data for the globular cluster NGC 6388. The aim of this work is to probe whether this massive cluster hosts an intermediate-mass black hole at its center and to compare the results with the expected value predicted by the M-{sigma} scaling relation.
