- We extend our previous calibration of the infrared CaII triplet (CaT) as a metallicity indicator to the metal-poor regime by including observations of 55 field stars with [Fe/H] down to -4.0dex. While we previously solved the saturation at high metallicity using a combination of a Lorentzian and a Gaussian to reproduce the line profiles, in this paper we address the non-linearity at low metallicity following the suggestion of Starkenburg et al. of adding two non-linear terms to the relation among the [Fe/H], luminosity and strength of the calcium triplet lines. Our calibration thus extends from -4.0 to +0.5 in metallicity and is presented using four different luminosity indicators: V-V_HB_, M_V_, M_I_ and M_K_. The calibration obtained in this paper results in a tight correlation between [Fe/H] abundances measured from high-resolution spectra and [Fe/H] values derived from the CaT, over the whole metallicity range covered.

- The detailed chemical abundances of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are key guides to understanding the early chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Most existing data, however, treat giant stars that may have experienced internal mixing later. We aim to compare the results for giants with new, accurate abundances for all observable elements in 18 EMP turnoff stars. VLT/UVES spectra at ~45000 and S/N ~130 per pixel (330-1000nm) are analysed with OSMARCS model atmospheres and the TURBOSPECTRUM code to derive abundances for C, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, and Ba. For Ca, Ni, Sr, and Ba, we find excellent consistency with our earlier sample of EMP giants, at all metallicities. However, our abundances of C, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn and Co are ~0.2dex larger than in giants of similar metallicity. Mg and Si abundances are ~0.2dex lower (the giant [Mg/Fe] values are slightly revised), while Zn is again ~0.4dex higher than in giants of similar [Fe/H] (6 stars only). For C, the dwarf/giant discrepancy could possibly have an astrophysical cause, but for the other elements it must arise from shortcomings in the analysis. Approximate computations of granulation (3D) effects yield smaller corrections for giants than for dwarfs, but suggest that this is an unlikely explanation, except perhaps for C, Cr, and Mn. NLTE computations for Na and Al provide consistent abundances between dwarfs and giants, unlike the LTE results, and would be highly desirable for the other discrepant elements as well. Meanwhile, we recommend using the giant abundances as reference data for Galactic chemical evolution models.

- We report the first use of the Rutgers Imaging Fabry-Perot Spectrophotometer to study the dynamics of the cores of globular clusters. We have obtained velocities for cluster stars by tuning the Fabry-Perot to take a series of narrowband (0.8A FWHM at 5890A) images at different wavelengths across one of the Na D (5890A) absorption lines. Measuring the flux in every frame yields a short portion of the spectrum for each star simultaneously. This proves to be a very efficient method for obtaining accurate stellar velocities; in crowded regions we are able to measure hundreds of velocities in 3-4h of observing time. We have measured velocities with uncertainties of less than 5km/s for 216 stars within 1.5' of the center of the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078). The velocity dispersion profile shows a sharp rise from 7 to 12km/s at 0.6' (1.8parsec), and then appears to flatten into our innermost point at 0.1'. A rotation amplitude of 1.4+/-0.8km/s is detected. The rotation has been measured at a radius of 0.6' using stellar velocities and at 0.2' using the integrated light profile. The amplitude and position angle are the same at both radii, indicating a constant rotation profile in this region. Combining our two epochs of Fabry-Perot observation with published measurements, we have repeat velocity measurements for 67 stars. We calculate a binary fraction of about 7% for binary periods between 0.2 and 20 years and mass ratios larger than 0.22, which is in agreement with measurements for other globular clusters.

- We have used an Imaging Fabry-Perot Spectrophotometer with the Sub-arcsecond Imaging Spectrograph on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to measure velocities for 1534 stars in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078) with uncertainties between 0.5 and 10km/s. Combined with previous velocity samples, the total number of stars with measured velocities in M15 is 1597. An average seeing of 0.8" allowed us to obtain velocities for 144 stars within 10" of the center of M15, including 12 stars within 2". The velocity dispersion profile for M15 remains flat at a value of 11km/s from a radius of 0.4 into our innermost reliable point at 0.02 (0.06pc). Assuming an isotropic velocity dispersion tensor, this profile and the previously-published surface brightness profile can be equally well represented either by a stellar population whose M/L varies with radius from 1.7 in solar units at large radii to 3 in the central region, or by a population with a constant M/L of 1.7 and a central black hole of 1000M_{sun}_. A non-parametric mass model that assumes no black hole, no rotation, and isotropy constrains the mass density of M15 to better than 30% at a radius of 0.07 parsecs. The mass-density profile of this model is well represented by a power law with an exponent of -2.2, the value predicted by models of cluster core-collapse. Using the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, we estimate the present-day mass function and infer a significant number of 0.6-0.7 M_{sun}_ objects in the central few parsecs, 85% of which may be in the form of stellar remnants. Not only do we detect rotation; we find that the position angle of the projected rotation axis in the central 10" is 100deg different from that of the whole sample. We also detect an increase in the amplitude of the rotation at small radii. Although this increase needs to be confirmed with better-seeing data, it may be the result of a central mass concentration. - Intermediate resolution spectroscopy from the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope is analysed for 63 photometrically selected low-mass (0.08-0.30M_{sun}_) candidates of the open cluster NGC 2547. We have confirmed membership for most of these stars using radial velocities, and found that lithium remains undepleted for cluster stars with I>17.54+/-0.14 and Ks>14.86+/-0.12. From these results, several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models give almost model independent ages of 34-36Myr, with a precision of 10%. These ages are only slightly larger than the ages of 25-35(+/-5)Myr obtained using the same models to fit isochrones to higher mass stars descending towards the zero-age main-sequence, both in empirically calibrated and theoretical colour-magnitude diagrams. This agreement between age determinations in different mass ranges is an excellent test of the current generation of low-mass pre-main-sequence stellar models and lends confidence to ages determined with either method between 30 and 120Myr.

- We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of the recently discovered faint Milky Way satellites Bootes, Ursa Major I, Ursa Major II and Willman 1 (Wil1). Using the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph mounted on the Keck II telescope, we have obtained samples that contain from ~15 to ~85 probable members of these satellites for which we derive radial velocities precise to a few km/s down to i~21-22. About half of these stars are observed with a high enough signal-to-noise ratio to estimate their metallicity to within +/-0.2dex. The characteristics of all the observed stars are made available, along with those of the Canes Venatici I dwarf galaxy that have been analysed in a companion paper.

- With this survey we aim to derive accurate, multi-epoch radial velocities and atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, [M/H] and V_rot_sini) of a large sample of carefully selected red clump (RC) stars located over a great circle at high Galactic latitudes. We acquired data of the program stars of high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution with the Asiago Echelle spectrograph. We obtained radial velocities by applying cross-correlation and atmospheric parameters via chi2 fitting to a synthetic spectral library. Extensive tests were carried out by re-observing with the same instrument a large number of standard stars taken from a variety of sources in literature.

- The goal of our survey is to provide accurate and multi-epoch radial velocities, atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg and [M/H]), distances, and space velocities of faint red clump (RC) stars. We recorded high signal-to-noise (S/N>=200) spectra of RC stars over the 4750-5950{AA} range at a resolving power 5500. The target stars are distributed across the great circle of the celestial equator. Radial velocities were obtained via cross-correlation with IAU radial velocity standards. Atmospheric parameters were derived via {chi}^2^ fit to a synthetic spectral library. A large number of RC stars from other surveys were re-observed to check the consistency of our results and the absence of offsets and trends.

- A new metallicity distribution and an age-metallicity relation are presented for 437 nearby F and G turn-off and sub-giant stars selected from radial velocity data of Nidever et al. (2002, Cat. J/ApJS/141/503). Photometric metallicities are derived from uvby-H{beta} photometry, and the stellar ages from the isochrones of Bergbusch & VandenBerg (2001ApJ...556..322B) as transformed to uvby photometry using the methods of Clem et al. (2004, Cat. J/AJ/127/1227).

- We report radial velocities (RVs), projected equatorial velocities (vsini) and CaII triplet (CaT) chromospheric activity indices for 237 late-K to mid-M candidate members of the young open cluster NGC 2516. These stars have published rotation periods between 0.1 and 15d. Intermediate-resolution spectra were obtained using the Giraffe spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. Membership was confirmed on the basis of their RVs for 210 targets.
