- We report on abundances of O, Mg, Si, Ca and Fe for 10 giants in the Sgr dwarf spheroidal derived from high resolution spectra obtained with UVES at the 8.2m Kueyen-VLT telescope. The iron abundance spans the range -0.8<~[Fe/H]<~0.0 and the dominant population is relatively metal-rich with [Fe/H]~-0.25.

- This paper presents a combined method of Gaussian mixture model and random forest to compute membership probabilities of stars by using large, high-dimensional data sets. A significant advantage of this method is that it allows us to easily identify likely cluster members in large data sets starting from small training samples. As a benchmark, we select 40318 stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 6405 from the Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia-DR2, Cat. I/345) by means of all five astrometric (positions, proper motions, and parallax) and photometric parameters. We use this combined method to determine likely cluster members in an eleven-dimensional parameter space. A total number of 518 high-probability (>=0.6) memberships are obtained, and the mean parallax and proper motion of the cluster are determined to be 2.171+/-0.005 mas (461+/-1 pc) and (<{mu}_{alpha}_cos{delta}>, <{mu}_{delta}_>)=(-1.357+/-0.023, -5.823+/-0.020) mas/yr, respectively. In addition, we quantitatively evaluate the relative importance of the parameters for membership determination and find that colors and magnitudes cannot be ignored in membership determination when using the RF method. Our results show that this combined method exhibits good performance in handling arbitrary high-dimensional and large data sets, such as Gaia-DR2, and it can also be used to investigate other open clusters.

- Within a sphere of 400pc radius around the Sun, we search for members of the Pisces-Eridanus (Psc-Eri) stellar stream in the Gaia Data Release 2 DR2) data set. We compare basic astrophysical characteristics of the stream with those of the Pleiades. We used a modified convergent-point method to identify stars with 2D - velocities consistent with the space velocity of the Psc-Eri stream and the Pleiades, respectively. We found 1387 members of the Psc-Eri stream in a G-magnitude range from 5.1mag to 19.3mag at distances between 80 and 380pc from the Sun. The stream has a nearly cylindrical shape with a length of at least 700pc and a thickness of 100pc. The accumulated stellar mass of the 1387 members amounts to about 770M_{sun}_, and the stream is gravitationally unbound. For the stream we found an age of about 135Myr. In many astrophysical properties Psc-Eri is comparable to the open cluster M45 (the Pleiades): in its age, its luminosity function (LF), its present-day mass function (PDMF) as well as in its total mass. Nonetheless, the two stellar ensembles are completely unlike in their physical appearance. We cautiously give two possible explanations for this disagreement: (i) the star-formation efficiency in their parental molecular clouds was higher for the Pleiades than for Psc-Eri or/and (ii) the Pleiades had a higher primordial mass segregation immediately after the expulsion of the molecular gas of the parental cloud.

- Our scientific goal is to provide a 3D map of the nearest open cluster to the Sun, the Hyades, combining the recent release of Gaia astrometric data, ground-based parallaxes of sub-stellar member candidates and photometric data from surveys which cover large areas of the cluster. We combined the second Gaia release with ground-based H-band parallaxes obtained with the infrared camera on the 2-m robotic Liverpool telescope to astrometrically identify stellar and sub-stellar members of the Hyades, the nearest open cluster to the Sun. We find 1764 objects within 70 degree radius from the cluster center from the Gaia second data release, whose kinematic properties are consistent with the Hyades. We limit our study to 30pc from the cluster center (47.03+/-0.20pc) where we identify 710 candidate members, including 85 and 385 in the core and tidal radius, respectively. We determine proper motions and parallaxes of eight candidate brown dwarf members and confirm their membership. Using the 3D positions and a model-based mass-luminosity relation we derive a luminosity and mass function in the 0.04 to 2.5M_{sun}_ range. We confirm evidence for mass segregation in the Hyades and find a dearth of brown dwarfs in the core of the cluster. From the white dwarf members we estimate an age of 640^+67^_-49_Myr. We identify a list of members in the Hyades cluster from the most massive stars down to the brown dwarfs. We produce for the first time a 3D map of the Hyades cluster in the stellar and sub-stellar regimes and make available the list of candidate members.

- We investigate the resolved stellar content of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group, to estimate their intermediate-age population fractions. We use near-infrared photometric data taken with the VLT/ISAAC instrument, together with previously analyzed archival HST/ACS data. The combination of the optical and infrared wavelength range permits us to firmly identify luminous asymptotic giant branch stars, which are indicative of an intermediate-age population in these galaxies. We consider one dwarf spheroidal (CenA-dE1) and two dwarf elliptical (SGC1319.1-4216 and ESO269-066) galaxies that are dominated by an old population. The most recent periods of star formation are estimated to have taken place between 2 and 5Gyr ago for SGC1319.1-4216 and ESO269-066, and approximately 9Gyr ago for CenA-dE1. For ESO269-066, we find that the intermediate-age populations are significantly more centrally concentrated than the predominantly old underlying stars. The intermediate-age population fraction is found to be small in the target galaxies, consistent with fractions of up to 15% of the total population. These values might be larger by a factor of two or three, if we considered the observational limitations and the recent discussion about the uncertainties in theoretical models. We suggest that there is a correlation between intermediate-age population fraction and proximity to the dominant group galaxy, with closer dwarfs having slightly smaller fractions, although our sample is too small to draw firm conclusions. Even when considering our results as lower limits, the intermediate-age population fractions for the studied dwarfs are clearly much smaller than those found in similar dwarfs around the Milky Way, but comparable to what is seen for the low-mass M31 companions. Our results confirm our previous work about early-type dwarfs in the Centaurus A group.

- IC 166 is an intermediate-age open cluster (OC) (~1 Gyr) that lies in the transition zone of the metallicity gradient in the outer disk. Its location, combined with our very limited knowledge of its salient features, make it an interesting object of study. We present the first high-resolution spectroscopic and precise kinematical analysis of IC 166, which lies in the outer disk with R_GC_~12.7 kpc. High-resolution H-band spectra were analyzed using observations from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. We made use of the Brussels Automatic Stellar Parameter code to provide chemical abundances based on a line-by-line approach for up to eight chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Al, K, Mn, and Fe). The {alpha}-element (Mg, Si, Ca, and whenever available Ti) abundances, and their trends with Fe abundances have been analyzed for a total of 13 high-likelihood cluster members. No significant abundance scatter was found in any of the chemical species studied. Combining the positional, heliocentric distance, and kinematic information, we derive, for the first time, the probable orbit of IC 166 within a Galactic model including a rotating boxy bar, and found that it is likely that IC 166 formed in the Galactic disk, supporting its nature as an unremarkable Galactic OC with an orbit bound to the Galactic plane.

- The heavily obscured open cluster Berkeley 51 shows characteristics typical of young massive clusters, even though the few previous studies have suggested older ages. We combine optical (UBV) and 2MASS photometry of the cluster field with multi-object and long-slit optical spectroscopy for a large sample of stars. We apply classical photometric analysis techniques to determine the reddening to the cluster, and then derive cluster parameters via isochrone fitting. We find a large population of B-type stars, with a main-sequence turn-off at B3 V, as well as a large number of supergiants with spectral types ranging from F to M. We use intermediate-resolution spectra of the evolved cool stars to derive their stellar parameters and find an essentially solar iron abundance. Under the plausible assumption that our photometry reaches stars still close to the zero-age main sequence, the cluster is located at d=~5.5kpc and has an age of ~60Ma, though a slightly younger and more distant cluster cannot be ruled out. Despite the apparent good fit of isochrones, evolved stars seem to reside in positions of the colour-magnitude diagram far away from the locations where stellar tracks predict helium burning to occur. Of particular interest is the presence of four yellow supergiants, two on the ascending branch and two others close to or inside the instability strip.

- The Calan-ESO Proper-Motion Catalog (CE Catalog) contains 542 stars with proper motions >=0.2"/yr, identified in 14 ESO areas in the southern hemisphere. Proper motions were measured from red IIIa-F plates taken 6-16yr apart. Comparing the CE catalog with the Luyten and the Luyten half-second catalogs, we find that both suffer from incompleteness, which is particularly serious (<~40% complete) for m_R_>~13, where many of the astrophysically interesting object can be found. Proper motions, coordinates, estimated magnitudes, and finding charts for all objects in the catalog are provided

- We perform spatially resolved stellar population analysis for a sample of 69 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey, including 48 ellipticals and 21 S0's. We generate and quantitatively characterize profiles of light-weighted mean stellar age and metallicity within <~2Re, as a function of radius and stellar-mass surface density {mu}*. We study in detail the dependence of profiles on galaxies' global properties, including velocity dispersion {sigma}_e_, stellar mass, morphology. ETGs are universally characterized by strong, negative metallicity gradients (~-0.3dex per Re) within 1Re, which flatten out moving towards larger radii. A quasi-universal local {mu}*-metallicity relation emerges, which displays a residual systematic dependence on {sigma}_e_, whereby higher {sigma}_e_ implies higher metallicity at fixed {mu}*. Age profiles are typically U-shaped, with minimum around 0.4Re, asymptotic increase to maximum ages beyond ~1.5Re, and an increase towards the centre. The depth of the minimum and the central increase anticorrelate with {sigma}_e_. A possible qualitative interpretation of these observations is a two-phase scenario. In the first phase, dissipative collapse occurs in the inner 1Re, establishing a negative metallicity gradient. The competition between the outside-in quenching due to feedback-driven winds and some form of inside-out quenching, possibly caused by central AGN feedback or dynamical heating, determines the U-shaped age profiles. In the second phase, the accretion of ex-situ stars from quenched and low-metallicity satellites shapes the flatter stellar population profiles in the outer regions.
