- The star-forming region of the Orion Nebula (ONC) is ideal to study the stellar dynamics of young stars in a clustered environment. Using Gaia DR2 we search for pre-main sequence stars with unusually high proper motions that may be representative of a dynamical ejection from unstable young triple systems or other close three-body encounters. We identify 26 candidate stars that are likely to have had such an encounter in the last 1Myr. Nine of these stars could be traced back to the densest central-most region of the ONC, the Trapezium, while five others have likely interactions with other OB-type stars in the cluster. Seven stars originate from other nearby populations within the Orion Complex that coincidentally scattered toward the ONC. A definitive point of origin cannot be identified for the remaining sources. These observations shed light on the frequency of the ejection events in young clusters.

- We present a data-driven method to estimate absolute magnitudes for O- and B-type stars from the LAMOST spectra, which we combine with Gaia DR2 parallaxes to infer distance and binarity. The method applies a neural network model trained on stars with precise Gaia parallax to the spectra and predicts K_s_-band absolute magnitudes M_Ks_ with a precision of 0.25mag, which corresponds to a precision of 12% in spectroscopic distance. For distant stars (e.g., >5kpc), the inclusion of constraints from spectroscopic M_Ks_ significantly improves the distance estimates compared to inferences from Gaia parallax alone. Our method accommodates for emission-line stars by first identifying them via principal component analysis reconstructions and then treating them separately for the M_Ks_ estimation. We also take into account unresolved binary/multiple stars, which we identify through deviations in the spectroscopic M_Ks_ from the geometric M_Ks_ inferred from Gaia parallax. This method of binary identification is particularly efficient for unresolved binaries with near equal-mass components and thus provides a useful supplementary way to identify unresolved binary or multiple-star systems. We present a catalog of spectroscopic M_Ks_, extinction, distance, flags for emission lines, and binary classification for 16002 OB stars from LAMOST DR5. As an illustration, we investigate the M_Ks_ of the enigmatic LB-1 system, which Liu et al. 2019Natur.575..618L had argued consists of a B star and a massive stellar-mass black hole. Our results suggest that LB-1 is a binary system that contains two luminous stars with comparable brightness, and the result is further supported by parallax from the Gaia eDR3.

- The present work presents our efforts at identifying new mercury-manganese (HgMn/CP3) stars using spectra obtained with the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Suitable candidates were searched for among pre-selected early-type spectra from LAMOST DR4 using a modified version of the MKCLASS code that probes several HgII and MnII features. The spectra of the resulting 332 candidates were visually inspected. Using parallax data and photometry from Gaia DR2, we investigated magnitudes, distances from the Sun, and the evolutionary status of our sample stars. We also searched for variable stars using diverse photometric survey sources. We present 99 bona fide CP3 stars, 19 good CP3 star candidates, and seven candidates. Our sample consists of mostly new discoveries and contains, on average, the faintest CP3 stars known (peak distribution 9.5<=G<=13.5mag). All stars are contained within the narrow spectral temperature-type range from B6 to B9.5, in excellent agreement with the expectations and the derived mass estimates (2.4<=M_{sun}_<=4 for most objects). Our sample stars are between 100Myr and 500Myr old and cover the whole age range from zero-age to terminal-age main sequence. They are almost homogeneously distributed at fractional ages on the main sequence <=80%, with an apparent accumulation of objects between fractional ages of 50% to 80%. We find a significant impact of binarity on the mass and age estimates. Eight photometric variables were discovered, most of which show monoperiodic variability in agreement with rotational modulation. Together with the recently published catalogue of APOGEE CP3 stars, our work significantly increases the sample size of known Galactic CP3 stars, paving the way for future in-depth statistical studies.

- The establishment of new spectral classes cooler than type M has had a brief, yet already rich, history. Prototypes of the new "L dwarf" and "T dwarf" classes were first found in the late 1980s to mid-1990s, with a flood of new discoveries occurring in the late 1990s with the advent of deep, large-area, digital sky surveys. Over four hundred and fifty L and T dwarfs are now catalogued. This review concentrates on the spectroscopic properties of these objects, beginning with the establishment of classification schemes rooted in the MK Process. The resulting grid of spectral types is then used as a tool to ferret out the underlying physics. The temperature ranges covered by these spectral types, the complex chemical processes responsible for the shape of their emergent spectra, their nature as either true stars or brown dwarfs, and their number density in the Galaxy are discussed. Two promising avenues for future research are also explored: the extension of the classification system to three dimensions to account for gravity- and metallicity-dependent features, and the capability of newer large-area surveys to uncover brown dwarfs cooler than those now recognized.

- This is the first paper of a series aimed at studying the properties of late-type members of young stellar kinematic groups. We concentrate our study on classical young moving groups such as the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 2-150Myr), IC 2391 supercluster (35Myr), Ursa Major group (Sirius supercluster, 300Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600Myr), as well as on recently identified groups such as the Castor moving group (200Myr). In this paper we compile a preliminary list of single late-type possible members of some of these young stellar kinematic groups. Stars are selected from previously established members of stellar kinematic groups based on photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based on other criteria such as their level of chromospheric activity, rotation rate and lithium abundance. Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos Catalogue, as well as from the Tycho-2 Catalogue, and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate the Galactic space motions (U, V, W) and to apply Eggen's kinematic criteria in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different groups.

- We present low-resolution spectroscopic observations of faint proper-motion stars from the LHS Catalogue, concentrating on stars with m_r_>16.5 and {mu}>0.5"/yr. The present paper includes observations and spectral classifications for 294 M dwarfs, M subdwarfs (sdM), and extreme M subdwarfs (esdM). We also identify white dwarfs among the faintest LHS stars. We have cross-referenced this sample against the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) sources, and list data for the detected objects. We discuss stars of individual interest, as well as the characteristics of the overall sample. As expected, a significant number of the stars in this proper-motion-selected sample are halo subdwarfs, including an esdM dwarf, LHS 3481, that is likely to lie within 20pc of the Sun. None of the subdwarfs show H{alpha} emission.

- Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345) provides unprecedented precision in measurements of the distance and kinematics of stars in the solar neighborhood. Through applying unsupervised machine learning on DR2's 5D data set (3D position + 2D velocity), we identify a number of clusters, associations, and comoving groups within 1 kpc and |b|<30{deg} (many of which have not been previously known). We estimate their ages with the precision of ~0.15 dex. Many of these groups appear to be filamentary or string-like, oriented in parallel to the Galactic plane, and some span hundreds of parsec in length. Most of these string lack a central cluster, indicating that their filamentary structure is primordial, rather than the result of tidal stripping or dynamical processing. The youngest strings (<100 Myr) are orthogonal to the Local Arm. The older ones appear to be remnants of several other arm-like structures that cannot be presently traced by dust and gas. The velocity dispersion measured from the ensemble of groups and strings increase with age, suggesting a timescale for dynamical heating of ~300 Myr. This timescale is also consistent with the age at which the population of strings begins to decline, while the population in more compact groups continues to increase, suggesting that dynamical processes are disrupting the weakly bound string populations, leaving only individual clusters to be identified at the oldest ages. These data shed a new light on the local galactic structure and a large-scale cloud collapse.

- Gaia Data Release 1 allows the recalibration of standard candles such as the red clump stars. To use those stars, they first need to be accurately characterised. In particular, colours are needed to derive interstellar extinction. As no filter is available for the first Gaia data release and to avoid the atmosphere model mismatch, an empirical calibration is unavoidable. The purpose of this work is to provide the first complete and robust photometric empirical calibration of the Gaia red clump stars of the solar neighbourhood through colour-colour, effective temperature-colour, and absolute magnitude-colour relations from the Gaia, Johnson, 2MASS, Hipparcos, Tycho-2, APASS-SLOAN, and WISE photometric systems, and the APOGEE DR13 spectroscopic temperatures. We used a 3D extinction map to select low reddening red giants. To calibrate the colour-colour and the effective temperature-colour relations, we developed a MCMC method that accounts for all variable uncertainties and selects the best model for each photometric relation. We estimated the red clump absolute magnitude through the mode of a kernel-based distribution function. We provide 20 colour versus G-Ks relations and the first Teff versus G-Ks calibration. We obtained the red clump absolute magnitudes for 15 photometric bands with, in particular, M_Ks_=(-1.606+/-0.009) and M_G_=(0.495+/-0.009)+(1.121+/-0.128)(G-Ks-2.1). We present a dereddened Gaia-TGAS HR diagram and use the calibrations to compare its red clump and its red giant branch bump with Padova isochrones.

- Continuous data releases throughout the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) primary mission will provide unique opportunities for the exoplanet community at large to contribute to maximizing TESS's scientific return via the discovery and validation of transiting planets. This paper introduces our independent pipeline for the detection of periodic transit events along with the results of its inaugural application to the recently released 2 minute light curves of low-mass stars from the first two TESS sectors. The stellar parameters within our sample are refined using precise parallax measurements from the Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345), which reduce the number of low-mass stars in our sample relative to those listed in the TESS Input Catalog. In lieu of the follow-up observations required to confirm or refute the planetary nature of transit-like signals, a validation of transit-like events flagged by our pipeline is performed statistically. The resulting vetted catalog contains eight probable blended eclipsing binaries, eight known TOIs, plus seven new planet candidates (PCs) smaller than 4 Earth radii. This work demonstrates the ability of our pipeline to detect sub-Neptune-sized PCs, which to date represent some of the most attractive targets for future atmospheric characterization via transmission or thermal emission spectroscopy and for radial velocity efforts aimed at the completion of the TESS level one requirement to deliver 50 planets smaller than 4 Earth radii with measured masses.

- A list of 4131 dwarfs, subgiants, and giants located or suspected to be located within 33pc of the Sun is presented. All the stars are drawn from the new Lepine Shara Proper Motion (LSPM)-North catalog (Cat. <I/298>) of 61,976 stars with annual proper motions larger than 0.15"/yr. Trigonometric parallax measurements are found in the literature for 1676 of the stars in the sample; photometric and spectroscopic distance moduli are found for another 783 objects. The remaining 1672 objects are reported here as nearby star candidates for the first time. Photometric distance moduli are calculated for the new stars based on the (M_V_, V-J) relationship, calibrated with the subsample of stars that have trigonometric parallaxes. The list of new candidates includes 539 stars that are suspected to be within 25pc of the Sun, including 63 stars estimated to be within only 15pc.
