- The catalogue of radial velocities of Galactic stars with high precision astrometric data (CRVAD) is the result of a merging of star lists from the General Catalog of Mean Radial Velocities (GCRV, Cat. III/213) and from the All-sky Compiled Catalogue of 2.5 Million Stars (ASCC-2.5, Cat. I/280). The cross identification of GCRV and ASCC-2.5 objects was carried out with help of coordinate, magnitude, colour and/or spectral type criteria. Data from the Catalogue of Components of Double and Multiple Stars (CCDM, Cat. I/274) were taken into account for the identification of multiple system components. 34553 stars of the ASCC-2.5 were identified with 33509 stars of the GCRV, i.e. 33509 stars of the GCRV have one entry in the ASCC-2.5, and 1044 objects have two entries. The catalogue includes accurate equatorial coordinates J2000, proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes in the Hipparcos system, B and V magnitudes in Johnson system, spectral classes, multiplicity and variability flags from the ASCC-2.5, and radial velocities, stellar magnitudes and spectra from the GCRV. Stars are sorted in right ascension J2000 order. 3967 stars were selected as radial velocity standard candidates (file rv_std.dat). These stars: - do not have any multiplicity and/or variability flags both in the GCRV and ASCC-2.5; - have standard errors of equatorial coordinates e <= 40 mas; - have standard errors of proper motions e_pm <= 4 mas/yr; - have standard errors of V magnitude e_V <= 0.05 mag and (B-V) colour e_(B-V) <= 0.07 mag; - have standard errors of radial velocity e_RV <= 2 km/s or quality index A or B, which corresponds to e_RV 0.74 and 1.78 km/s; - have at least four RV observations N_RV.

- Radio astrometry of nearby, low-mass stars has the potential to be a powerful tool for the discovery and characterization of planetary companions. We present a Very Large Array survey of 172 active M dwarfs at distances of less than 10pc. Twenty-nine stars were detected with flux densities greater than 100uJy. We observed seven of these stars with the Very Long Baseline Array at milliarcsecond resolution in three separate epochs. With a detection threshold of 500uJy in images of sensitivity 1{sigma}~100uJy, we detected three stars three times (GJ 65B, GJ 896A, GJ 4247), one star twice (GJ 285), and one star once (GJ 803). Two stars were undetected (GJ 412B and GJ 1224). For the four stars detected in multiple epochs, residuals from the optically determined apparent motions have an root-mean-square deviation of ~0.2 milliarcseconds, consistent with statistical noise limits. Combined with previous optical astrometry, these residuals provide acceleration upper limits that allow us to exclude planetary companions more massive than 3-6M_Jup_ at a distance of ~1AU with a 99% confidence level.

- Classical Cepheids are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the precise zero points of their Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit (PL/PW) relations has profound consequences on the estimate of H_0_. Type II Cepheids are also important distance indicator and tracers of old stellar populations. The recent Data Release 2 (DR2) of the Gaia Spacecraft includes photometry and parallaxes for thousands of classical and type II cepheids. We aim at reviewing the classification of Gaia DR2 Cepheids and to derive precise PL/PW for Magellanic Cloud (MCs) and Galactic Cepheids. Information from the literature and the Gaia astrometry and photometry are adopted to assign DR2 Galactic Cepheids to the classes: Classical, Anomalous and Type II Cepheids. We re-classify the DR2 Galactic Cepheids and derive new precise PL/PW relations in the Gaia passbands for the MCs and Milky Way Cepheids. We investigated for the first time the dependence on metallicity of the PW relation for Classical Cepheids in the Gaia} bands, finding non-conclusive results. According to our analysis, the zero point of the Gaia DR2 parallaxes as estimated from Classical and Type II Cepheids seems to be likely underestimated by ~0.07mas, in full agreement with recent literature. The next Gaia data releases are expected to fix this zero point offset to eventually allow a determination of H_0_ to less than 1%.

- Hipparcos data for 71 nearby dwarf A0 stars were combined with other data, in particular with high resolution spectra to establish the HR diagram in this temperature range. Almost 30% of unknown binaries were detected and discarded before establishing the M-L relation for bright A0 V field stars. The relationship derived for these single stars is compared to the classical diagram derived from eclipsing binaries. The scatter of the latter is examined and the role of gravity is discussed. A good agreement is found between the evolution-based surface gravity logg_ev_ and the value of logg_ph_ obtained from photometric data.

- We analyse the K-band luminosities of a sample of galactic long-period variables using parallaxes measured by the Hipparcos mission. The parallaxes are in most cases re-computed from the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data using improved astrometric fits and chromaticity corrections. The K band magnitudes are taken from the literature and from measurements by COBE, and are corrected for interstellar and circumstellar extinction. The sample contains stars of several spectral types: M, S and C, and of several variability classes: Mira, semiregular SRa, and SRb. We find that the distribution of stars in the period-luminosity plane is independent of circumstellar chemistry, but that the different variability types have different P-L distributions. Both the Mira variables and the SRb variables have reasonably well-defined period-luminosity relationships, but with very different slopes. The SRa variables are distributed between the two classes, suggesting that they are a mixture of Miras and SRb, rather than a separate class of stars. New period-luminosity relationships are derived based on our revised Hipparcos parallaxes. The Miras show a similar period-luminosity relationship to that found for Large Magellanic Cloud Miras by Feast et al. (1989MNRAS.241..375F).

- The Hipparcos parallaxes of cool giants are utilized in two ways in this paper. First, a plot of reduced parallaxes of stars brighter than 6.5, as a function of spectral type, for the first time separates members of the clump from stars in the main giant ridge. A slight modification of the MK luminosity standards has been made so that luminosity class IIIb defines members of the clump, and nearly all of the class III stars fall within the main giant ridge. Second, a new calibration of MK luminosity classes III and IIIb in terms of visual absolute magnitudes has been made.

- OB associations play an important role in Galactic evolution, though their origins and dynamics remain poorly studied, with only a small number of systems analysed in detail. In this paper we revisit the existence and membership of the Cygnus OB associations. We find that of the historical OB associations only Cyg OB2 and OB3 stand out as real groups. We search for new OB stars using a combination of photometry, astrometry, evolutionary models and an SED fitting process, identifying 4680 probable OB stars with a reliability of >90%. From this sample we search for OB associations using a new and flexible clustering technique, identifying 6 new OB associations. Two of these are similar to the associations Cyg OB2 and OB3, though the others bear no relationship to any existing systems. We characterize the properties of the new associations, including their velocity dispersions and total stellar masses, all of which are consistent with typical values for OB associations. We search for evidence of expansion and find that all are expanding, albeit anistropically, with stronger and more significant expansion in the direction of Galactic longitude. We also identify two large-scale (160pc and 25km/s) kinematic expansion patterns across the Cygnus region, each including three of our new associations, and attribute this to the effects of feedback from a previous generation of stars. This work highlights the need to revisit the existence and membership of the historical OB associations, if they are to be used to study their properties and dynamics.

- We have obtained high resolution spectra for a volume-limited sample of 118 field M dwarfs. From these observations we derive projected rotational velocities and fluxes in the H{alpha} and H{beta} lines. 8 stars are double-lined spectroscopic binaries with measured or probable periods short enough for rotation to be tidally synchronized with the orbit, and another 11 are visual binaries where we cannot yet separate the lines of the two stars. Of the remaining 99 stars, 24 have rotational velocities above our detection limit of ~2km/s, and some are quite fast rotators, including two with vsini>30km/s and one with vsini~50km/s. Given the small radii of M dwarfs, these moderate rotational velocities correspond to rather short maximum rotational periods, of only 7-8 hours.

- Thin stellar streams, formed from the tidal disruption of globular clusters, are important gravitational tools, sensitive to both global and small-scale properties of dark matter. The Palomar 5 stellar stream (Pal 5) is an exemplar stream within the Milky Way: its ~20{deg} tidal tails connect back to the progenitor cluster, and the stream has been used to study the shape, total mass, and substructure fraction of the dark matter distribution of the Galaxy. However, most details of the phase-space distribution of the stream are not fully explained, and dynamical models that use the stream for other inferences are therefore incomplete. Here we aim to measure distance and kinematic properties along the Pal 5 stream in order to motivate improved models of the system. We use a large catalog of RR Lyrae-type stars (RRLs) with astrometric data from the Gaia mission to probabilistically identify RRLs in the Pal 5 stream. RRLs are useful because they are intrinsically luminous standard candles and their distances can be inferred with small relative precision (~3%). By building a probabilistic model of the Pal 5 cluster and stream in proper motion and distance, we find 27 RRLs consistent with being members of the cluster (10) and stream (17). Using these RRLs, we detect gradients in distance and proper motion along the stream, and provide an updated measurement of the distance to the Pal 5 cluster using the RRLs, d=20.6+/-0.2 kpc. We provide a catalog of Pal 5 RRLs with inferred membership probabilities for future modeling work.

- We have used HIPPARCOS proper motions and the method of Statistical Parallax to estimate the absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars. In addition we used the HIPPARCOS parallax of RR Lyrae itself to determine it's absolute magnitude. These two results are in excellent agreement with each other and give a zero-point for the RR Lyrae M_v_,[Fe/H] relation of 0.77+/-0.15 at [Fe/H]=-1.53. This zero-point is in good agreement with that obtained recently by several groups using Baade-Wesselink methods which, averaged over the results from the different groups, gives M_v_=0.73+/-0.14 at [Fe/H]=-1.53. Taking the HIPPARCOS based zero-point and a value of 0.18+/-0.03 for the slope of the M_v_,[Fe/H] relation from the literature we find firstly, the distance modulus of the LMC is 18.26+/-0.15 and secondly, the mean age of the Globular Clusters is 17.4+/-3.0 GYrs. These values are compared with recent estimates based on other "standard candles" that have also been calibrated with HIPPARCOS data. It is clear that, in addition to astrophysical problems, there are also problems in the application of HIPPARCOS data that are not yet fully understood.
