- We present the technique and results of a survey of stars within 8pc of the Sun with declinations {delta}>-35{deg} (J2000.00). The survey, designed to find without color bias faint companions, consists of optical coronagraphic images of the 1 field of view centered on each star and infrared direct images with a 32" field of view. The images were obtained through the optical Gunn r and z filters and the infrared J and K filters. The survey achieves sensitivities up to 4 absolute magnitudes fainter than the prototype brown dwarf, Gliese 229B. However, this sensitivity varies with the seeing conditions, the intrinsic brightness of the star observed, and the angular distance from the star. As a result, we tabulate sensitivity limits for each star in the survey. We used the criterion of common proper motion to distinguish companions and to determine their luminosities. In addition to the brown dwarf Gl 229B, we have identified six new stellar companions of the sample stars. Since the survey began, accurate trigonometric parallax measurements for most of the stars have become available. As a result, some of the stars we originally included should no longer be included in the 8pc sample. In addition, the 8pc sample is incomplete at the faint end of the main sequence, complicating our calculation of the binary fraction of brown dwarfs. We assess the sensitivity of the survey to stellar companions and to brown dwarf companions of different masses and ages.

- We present the results from a spectroscopic CaII H&K survey of 1058 late-type stars selected from a color-limited subsample of the Hipparcos (Cat. <I/239>) catalog. Out of these 1058 stars, 371 stars were found to show significant H&K emission, most of them previously unknown; 23% with strong emission, 36% with moderate emission, and 41% with weak emission. These spectra are used to determine absolute H&K emission-line fluxes, radial velocities, and equivalent widths of the luminosity-sensitive Sr II line at 4077{AA}. Red-wavelength spectroscopic and Stroemgren y photometric follow-up observations of the 371 stars with H&K emission are used to additionally determine the absolute H{alpha}-core flux, the lithium abundance from the Li I 6708{AA} equivalent width, the rotational velocity vsini, the radial velocity, and the light variations and its periodicity.

- The first results of a new survey are reported, which explores the 2nd data release of the ESA-Gaia mission, in order to search for stellar companions of (Community) TESS Objects of Interest and to characterize their properties. In total, 193 binary and 15 hierarchical triple star systems are presented, detected among 1391 target stars, which are located at distances closer than about 500pc around the Sun. The companions and the targets are equidistant and share a common proper motion, as it is expected for gravitationally bound stellar systems, proven with their accurate Gaia astrometry. The companions exhibit masses in the range between about 0.08M_{sun}_ and 3M_{sun}_ and are most frequently found in the mass range between 0.13 and 0.6M_{sun}_. The companions are separated from the targets by about 40 up to 9900au, and their frequency continually decreases with increasing separation. While most of the detected companions are late K to mid M dwarfs, also 5 white dwarf companions were identified in this survey, whose true nature is revealed by their photometric properties.

- We present the latest results of our ongoing multiplicity study of (Community) TESS Objects of Interest, using astro- and photometric data from the ESA-Gaia mission, to detect stellar companions of these stars and to characterize their properties. In total, 107 binary, 5 hierarchical triple star systems, as well as one quadruple system were detected among 585 targets surveyed, which are all located at distances closer than about 500pc around the Sun. As proven with their accurate Gaia EDR3 astrometry, the companions and the targets are located at the same distance and share a common proper motion, as it is expected for components of gravitationally bound stellar systems. The companions exhibit masses in the range between about 0.09M_{sun}_ and 4.5M_{sun}_ and are most frequently found in the mass range between 0.15 and 0.6M_{sun}_. The companions are separated from the targets by about 120 up to 9500au and their frequency is the highest and constant within about 500au while it continually decreases for larger separations. Beside mainly early to mid M dwarfs, also 5 white dwarf companions were identified in this survey, whose true nature was revealed by their photometric properties.

- We present results of the largest, most comprehensive study ever done of the stellar multiplicity of the most common stars in the Galaxy, the red dwarfs. We have conducted an all-sky volume-limited survey for stellar companions to 1120 M dwarf primaries known to lie within 25 pc of the Sun via trigonometric parallaxes. In addition to a comprehensive literature search, stars were explored in new surveys for companions at separations of 2"-300". A reconnaissance of wide companions to separations of 300" was done via blinking archival images. I-band images were used to search our sample for companions at separations of 2"-180". Various astrometric and photometric methods were used to probe the inner 2" to reveal close companions. We report the discovery of 20 new companions and identify 56 candidate multiple systems. We find a stellar multiplicity rate of 26.8+/-1.4% and a stellar companion rate of 32.4+/-1.4% for M dwarfs. There is a broad peak in the separation distribution of the companions at 4-20 au, with a weak trend of smaller projected linear separations for lower mass primaries. A hint that M-dwarf multiplicity may be a function of tangential velocity is found, with faster moving, presumably older, stars found to be multiple somewhat less often. We calculate that stellar companions make up at least 17% of mass attributed to M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, with roughly 11% of M-dwarf mass hidden as unresolved companions. Finally, when considering all M-dwarf primaries and companions, we find that the mass distribution for M dwarfs increases to the end of the stellar main sequence.

- Astrometric surveys provide the opportunity to measure the absolute magnitudes of large numbers of stars, but only if the individual line-of-sight extinctions are known. Unfortunately, extinction is highly degenerate with stellar effective temperature when estimated from broad band optical/infrared photometry. To address this problem, I introduce a Bayesian method for estimating the intrinsic parameters of a star and its line-of-sight extinction.

- We present new kinematic data for the Ophiuchus stellar stream. Spectra have been taken of member candidates at the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) using Hectospec, Hectochelle, and Binospec, which provide more than 1800 new velocities. Combined with proper-motion measurements of stars in the field by the Gaia-DR2 catalog, we have derived stream membership probabilities, resulting in the detection of more than 200 likely members. These data show the stream extends to more than three times the length shown in the discovery data. A spur to the main stream is also detected. The high-resolution spectra allow us to resolve the stellar velocity dispersion, found to be 1.6{+/-}0.3km/s.

- We present results of a spectroscopic analysis of 366 G and K giant stars. For 112 stars this is the first spectroscopic analysis. The stars were selected for a radial velocity survey, which is currently carried out at Lick observatory, using the Coude Auxiliary Telescope in conjunction with the Hamilton Echelle spectrograph. For each star a high signal to noise spectrum is available, which is used for the present analysis. The Teff, logg and iron abundance are determined by imposing excitation and ionisation equilibrium through stellar models. The micro turbulence is obtained by requiring no dependence of Fe I against equivalent width. The rotational velocity is obtained from a comparison with data from Gray (1989ApJ...347.1021G) and the macro turbulence is derived using Gray (2005PASP..117..711G).

- Empirical correlations between stellar parameters such as rotation or radius and magnetic activity diagnostics require estimates of the effective temperatures and the stellar radii. The aim of this study is to propose simple methods that can be applied to large samples of stars in order to derive estimates of the stellar parameters. Good empirical correlations between red/infrared colors (e.g., (R-I)_C_) and effective temperatures have been well established for a long time. The more recent (R-I)_C_ color-T_eff_ correlation using the data of Mann et al. (2015, J/ApJ/804/64, hereafter M15) and Boyajian et al. (2012, J/ApJ/757/112, hereafter B12) shows that this color can be applied as a temperature estimate for large samples of stars. We find that the mean scatter in T_eff_ relative to the (R-I)_C_-T_eff_ relationship of B12 and M15 data is only +/-3{sigma}=44.6 K for K dwarfs and +/-3{sigma}=39.4 K for M dwarfs. These figures are small and show that the (R-I)_C_ color can be used as a first-guess effective temperature estimator for K and M dwarfs. We derive effective temperatures for about 1910 K and M dwarfs using the calibration of (R-I)_C_ color-T_eff_ from B12 and M15 data. We also compiled T_eff_ and metallicity measurements available in the literature using the VizieR database. We determine T_eff_ for 441 stars with previously unknown effective temperatures. We also identified 21 new spectroscopic binaries and one triple system from our high-resolution spectra.

- In this work we use the first data release of the Gaia mission to explore the three-dimensional arrangement and age ordering of the many stellar groups toward the Orion OB association, aiming at a new classification and characterization of the stellar population not embedded in the Orion A and B molecular clouds. We make use of the parallaxes and proper motions provided in the Tycho Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) subset of the Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) catalog and of the combination of Gaia DR1 and 2MASS photometry. In TGAS, we find evidence for the presence of a young population at a parallax {varpi}~2.65mas, which is loosely distributed around the following known clusters: 25 Ori, {epsilon} Ori, and {sigma} Ori, and NGC 1980 ({iota} Ori) and the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). The low mass counterpart of this population is visible in the color magnitude diagrams constructed by combining Gaia DR1 G-band photometry and 2MASS. We study the density distribution of the young sources in the sky using a kernel density estimation (KDE). We find the same groups as in TGAS and also some other density enhancements that might be related to the recently discovered Orion X group, Orion dust ring, and {lambda} Ori complex. The maps also suggest that the 25 Ori group presents a northern elongation.We estimated the ages of this population using a Bayesian isochronal fitting procedure assuming a unique parallax value for all the sources, and we inferred the presence of an age gradient going from 25 Ori (13-15Myr) to the ONC (1-2Myr). We confirmed this age ordering by repeating the Bayesian fit using the Pan-STARRS1 data. Intriguingly, the estimated ages toward the NGC 1980 cluster span a broad range of values. This can either be due to the presence of two populations coming from two different episodes of star formation or to a large spread along the line of sight of the same population. Some confusion might arise from the presence of unresolved binaries, which are not modeled in the fit, and usually mimic a younger population. Finally, we provisionally relate the stellar groups to the gas and dust features in Orion. Our results form the first step toward using Gaia data to unravel the complex star formation history of the Orion region in terms of the various star formation episodes, their duration, and their effects on the surrounding interstellar medium.
