- We present a spectral investigation of X-ray binaries (XBs) in NGC 5128 (Cen A), using six 100ks Chandra observations taken over two months in 2007. We divide our sample into thermally and non-thermally dominated states based on the behavior of the fitted absorption column N_H_, and present the spectral parameters of sources with L_x_>~2x10^37^erg/s. The majority of sources are consistent with being neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs) and we identify three transient black hole (BH) LMXB candidates coincident with the dust lane, which is the remnant of a small late-type galaxy. Our results also provide tentative support for the apparent "gap" in the mass distribution of compact objects between ~2-5M_{sun}_. We propose that BH LMXBs are preferentially found in the dust lane, and suggest this is because of the younger stellar population. The majority (~70%-80%) of potential Roche lobe filling donors in the Cen A halo are >~12Gyr old, while BH LMXBs require donors >~1M_{sun}_ to produce the observed peak luminosities. This requirement for more massive donors may also explain recent results that claim a steepening of the X-ray luminosity function with age at L_x_>=5x10^38^erg/s for the XB population of early-type galaxies; for older stellar populations, there are fewer stars >~1M_{sun}_, which are required to form the more luminous sources.

- We present the first X-ray study of NGC 6791, one of the oldest open clusters known (8Gyr). Our Chandra observation is aimed at uncovering the population of close interacting binaries down to L_X_~1x10^30^erg/s (0.3-7keV). We detect 86 sources within 8' of the cluster center, including 59 inside the half-mass radius. We identify 20 sources with proper-motion cluster members, which are a mix of cataclysmic variables (CVs), active binaries (ABs), and binaries containing sub-subgiants. With follow-up optical spectroscopy, we confirm the nature of one CV. We discover one new, X-ray variable candidate CV with Balmer and He II emission lines in its optical spectrum; this is the first X-ray-selected CV in an open cluster. The number of CVs per unit mass is consistent with the field, suggesting that the 3-4 CVs observed in NGC 6791 are primordial. We compare the X-ray properties of NGC 6791 with those of a few old open (NGC 6819, M67) and globular clusters (47 Tuc, NGC 6397). It is puzzling that the number of ABs brighter than 1x10^30^erg/s normalized by cluster mass is lower in NGC 6791 than in M 67 by a factor ~3-7. CVs, ABs, and sub-subgiants brighter than 1x10^30^erg/s are under-represented per unit mass in the globular clusters compared to the oldest open clusters, and this accounts for the lower total X-ray luminosity per unit mass of the former. This indicates that the net effect of dynamical encounters may be the destruction of even some of the hardest (i.e., X-ray-emitting) binaries.

- We have analyzed Chandra ACIS observations of 32 nearby spiral and elliptical galaxies and present the results of 1441 X-ray point sources that were detected in these galaxies. The total point-source X-ray (0.3-8.0keV) luminosity L_XP_ is well correlated with the B-band, K-band, and FIR+UV luminosities of spiral host galaxies and is well correlated with the B-band and K-band luminosities of elliptical galaxies. This suggests an intimate connection between L_XP_ and both the old and young stellar populations, for which K and FIR+UV luminosities are reasonable proxies for the galaxy mass M and star formation rate SFR.

- We present an analysis of the compact X-ray source population in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, imaged with a 50ks Chandra observation. We find a total of 84 compact sources on the S3 chip, of which 66 are located within the 25.0B-mag/arcsec^2^ isophote of the galactic disk of NGC 1068. Spectra have been obtained for the 21 sources with at least 50 counts and modeled with both multicolor disk blackbody and power-law models.

- We present a wide-field study of the globular cluster (GC)/low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) connection in the giant elliptical NGC 1399. The large field of view of the Advanced Camera for Surveys/WFC, combined with Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra high resolution, allow us to constrain the LMXB formation scenarios in elliptical galaxies. We confirm that NGC 1399 has the highest LMXB fraction in GCs of all nearby elliptical galaxies studied so far, even though the exact value depends on galactocentric distance due to the interplay of a differential GC versus galaxy light distribution and the GC color dependence. In fact, LMXBs are preferentially hosted by bright, red GCs out to >5R_eff_ of the galaxy light. The finding that GCs hosting LMXBs follow the radial distribution of their parent GC population argues against the hypothesis that the external dynamical influence of the galaxy affects the LMXB formation in GCs. On the other hand, field-LMXBs closely match the host galaxy light, thus indicating that they are originally formed in situ and not inside GCs. We measure GC structural parameters, finding that the LMXB formation likelihood is influenced independently by mass, metallicity, and GC structural parameters. In particular, the GC central density plays a major role in predicting which GCs host accreting binaries. Finally, our analysis shows that LMXBs in GCs are marginally brighter than those in the field, and in particular the only color-confirmed GC with L_X_>10^39^erg/s shows no variability, which may indicate a superposition of multiple LMXBs in these systems.

- With the advent of very large X-ray surveys, an automated classification of X-ray sources becomes increasingly valuable. This work proposes a revisited naive Bayes classification of the X-ray sources in the Swift-XRT and XMM- Newton catalogs into four classes - AGN, stars, X-ray binaries (XRBs), and cataclysmic variables (CVs) - based on their spatial, spectral, and timing properties and their multiwavelength counterparts. An outlier measure is used to identify objects of other natures. The classifier is optimized to maximize the classification performance of a chosen class (here XRBs), and it is adapted to data mining purposes. We augmented the X-ray catalogs with multiwavelength data, source class, and variability properties. We then built a reference sample of about 25000 X-ray sources of known nature. From this sample, the distribution of each property was carefully estimated and taken as reference to assign probabilities of belonging to each class. The classification was then performed on the whole catalog, combining the information from each property. Using the algorithm on the Swift reference sample, we retrieved 99%, 98%, 92%, and 34% of AGN, stars, XRBs, and CVs, respectively, and the false positive rates are 3%, 1%, 9%, and 15%. Similar results are obtained on XMM sources. When applied to a carefully selected test sample, representing 55% of the X-ray catalog, the classification gives consistent results in terms of distributions of source properties. A substantial fraction of sources not belonging to any class is efficiently retrieved using the outlier measure, as well as AGN and stars with properties deviating from the bulk of their class. Our algorithm is then compared to a random forest method; the two showed similar performances, but the algorithm presented in this paper improved insight into the grounds of each classification. This robust classification method can be tailored to include additional or different source classes and can be applied to other X-ray catalogs. The transparency of the classification compared to other methods makes it a useful tool in the search for homogeneous populations or rare source types, including multi-messenger events. Such a tool will be increasingly valuable with the development of surveys of unprecedented size, such as LSST, SKA, and Athena, and the search for counterparts of multi-messenger events.

- We present the first X-ray study of Collinder 261 (Cr261), which at an age of 7Gyr is one of the oldest open clusters known in the Galaxy. Our observation with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory is aimed at uncovering the close interacting binaries in Cr261, and reaches a limiting X-ray luminosity of L_X_~4x10^29^erg/s (0.3-7keV) for stars in the cluster. We detect 107 sources within the cluster half-mass radius r_h_, and we estimate that among the sources with L_X_>~10^30^erg/s, ~26 are associated with the cluster. We identify a mix of active binaries and candidate active binaries, candidate cataclysmic variables, and stars that have "straggled" from the main locus of Cr261 in the color-magnitude diagram. Based on a deep optical source catalog of the field, we estimate that Cr261 has an approximate mass of 6500M_{sun}_, roughly the same as the old open cluster NGC6791. The X-ray emissivity of Cr261 is similar to that of other old open clusters, supporting the trend that they are more luminous in X-rays per unit mass than old populations of higher (globular clusters) and lower (the local neighborhood) stellar density. This implies that the dynamical destruction of binaries in the densest environments is not solely responsible for the observed differences in X-ray emissivity.

- We present a comprehensive X-ray study of four years of pointed RXTE observations of GRS 1915+105 in the {chi}-state. We interpret the behavior of the hard power law tail spectrum as coming from inverse Compton scattering of soft disk photons on a thermally dominated hybrid corona above the accretion disk. GRS 1915+105 shows a strong, variable reflection amplitude. As in other BHC and in Seyfert galaxies, a correlation between the power law slope and the reflection was found. Also, the radio fluxes at 2.25GHz and 15GHz correlate with the power law slope, thus revealing a connection between the outflowing matter and the comptonizing region in the {chi}-states.

- Neutron star Z-type sources provide a unique platform in order to understand the structure of accretion disk-corona geometry emitting close to the Eddington luminosity. Using RXTE and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array Mission (NuSTAR) satellite data, we performed crosscorrelation function (CCF) studies in GX 17+2 in order to constrain the size of the corona responsible for hard X-rays. From the RXTE data, we found that during horizontal and normal branches, the CCFs show anticorrelated hard (16-30keV) and soft (2-5keV) X-ray delays of the order of a few tens to hundred seconds with a mean correlation coefficient of 0.42+/-0.11. Few observations shows correlated lags and, on one occasion, coincident with radio emission. We also report an anticorrelated hard X-ray delay of 113+/-51s using the NuSTAR data of GX 17+2. Based on RXTE data, we find that soft and hard X-ray fluxes are varying, indicating the changes in the disk-corona structure during delays. We bridle the size of the corona using relativistic precession, transition layer models, and boundary layer models. Assuming the delays to be a readjustment timescale of the disk-corona structure, the height of the corona was estimated to be ~17-100km. Assuming that the inner region of the truncated disk is occupied by the corona, we constrain the coronal readjustment velocities (v_corona_={beta}v_disk_, where v_disk_ is the radial velocity component of the disk) of the order of {beta}=0.06-0.12. This study indicates that the observed delays are primarily dependent on the varying coronal readjustment velocities.
