- Description:
- The circumgalactic medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line of sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sample of 15 sub-damped Lyman {alpha} absorbers (sub-DLAs, defined as absorbers with 19.0 z_abs_<=3.104 from the ESO Ultra-Violet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample (EUADP). We combine these results with other measurements from the literature to produce a compilation of metallicity measurements for 92 sub-DLAs as well as a sample of 362 DLAs. We apply a multi-element analysis to quantify the amount of dust in these two classes of systems. We find that either the element depletion patterns in these systems differ from the Galactic depletion patterns or they have a different nucleosynthetic history than our own Galaxy. We propose a new method to derive the velocity width of absorption profiles, using the modelled Voigt profile features. The correlation between the velocity width {Delta}V_90_ of the absorption profile and the metallicity is found to be tighter for DLAs than for sub-DLAs. We report hints of a bimodal distribution in the [Fe/H] metallicity of low redshift (z<1.25) sub-DLAs, which is unseen at higher redshifts. This feature can be interpreted as a signature from the metal-poor, accreting gas and the metal-rich, outflowing gas, both being traced by sub-DLAs at low redshifts.

- Description:
- Hot subdwarf stars of spectral types O and B represent a poorly understood phase in the evolution of low-mass stars, in particular of close compact binaries. A variety of phenomena are observed, which make them important tools for several astronomical disciplines. For instance, the richness of oscillations of many subdwarfs are important for asteroseismology. Furthermore, hot subdwarfs are among the most chemically peculiar stars known. Two intermediate He-rich hot subdwarf stars, LSIV -14 116 and Feige 46, are particularly interesting, because they show extreme enrichments of heavy elements such as Ge, Sr, Y, and Zr, strikingly similar in both stars. In addition, both stars show light oscillations at periods incompatible with standard pulsation theory and form the class of V366 Aqr variables. We investigate whether the similar chemical compositions extend to more complete abundance patterns in both stars and validate the pulsations in Feige 46 using its recent TESS light curve. High-resolution optical and near-ultraviolet spectroscopy are combined with non-local-thermodynamical-equilibrium model atmospheres and synthetic spectra calculated with Tlusty and Synspec to determine detailed metal abundance patterns in both stars consistently. Many previously unidentified lines are identified for the first time with transitions originating from GaIII, GeIII-IV, SeIII, KrIII, SrII-III, YIII, ZrIII-IV, and SnIV, most of which have not been observed so far in any star. The abundance patterns of 19 metals in both stars are almost identical, light metals being only slightly more abundant in Feige 46 while Zr, Sn, and Pb are slightly less enhanced compared to LSIV -14 116. Both abundance patterns are distinctively different from those of normal He-poor hot subdwarfs of similar temperature. The extreme enrichment in heavy metals of more than 4 dex compared to the Sun is likely the result of strong atmospheric diffusion processes that operate similarly in both stars while their similar patterns of C, N, O, and Ne abundances might provide clues to their as yet unclear evolutionary history. Finally, we find that the periods of the pulsation modes in Feige 46 are stable to better than dP/dt~=10^-8^s/s. This is is not compatible with dP/dt predicted for pulsations driven by the epsilon-mechanism and excited by helium-shell flashes in a star which is evolving, for example, onto the extended horizontal branch.

- Description:
- We present the first high-resolution (6.2 to 7.7km/s FWHM) spectra of the APM BR J0307-4945 quasar at z_em_=4.73 obtained with UVES on the 8.2m VLT Kueyen telescope. We focus our analysis on a damped Lyman-{alpha} system at z_abs_=4.466, the most distant DLA system known to the present date, observed when the age of the universe was only 1.3Gyr. The following table lists the wavelengths and equivalent widths for all absorption-line features (except the telluric lines) redwards of the quasar Ly-{alpha} emission detected at 4{sigma} in equivalent width. The transition names and approximate redshifts are specified for the features we successfully identified. About 80% of the absorption lines redwards of the quasar Ly-{alpha} emission have been identified, corresponding to 13 metal-line systems.

- UVES/VLT spectra of white dwarfs
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We have started a large survey for radial velocity variations in white dwarfs (PI R. Napiwotzki) with the aim of finding close double degenerates, which could be precursor systems for SNe Ia. The UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT is used to obtain high resolution spectra with good S/N. During this project 1500 white dwarfs will be observed. This unique data set will also allow to derive atmospheric parameters and masses for the largest sample of white dwarfs ever analyzed in a homogeneous way. In this paper we present a catalog of objects and report results for the first sample of about 200 white dwarfs, many of which are spectroscopic confirmations of candidates from the Hamburg ESO Quasar Survey (HE, Cat. <J/A+AS/115/235>), Montreal-Cambridge-Tololo Survey (MCT), and Edinburgh-Cape Survey (EC, Cat. <J/MNRAS/287/867>) surveys. Among the peculiar spectra we identify two new magnetic DA, one previously known magnetic DA, several DA with emission cores, in some cases due to a late-type companion, and two new DBA.

- Description:
- The ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY) took high-resolution spectra of more than 1000 white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs. About two thirds of the stars observed are hydrogen-dominated DA white dwarfs. Here we present a catalog and detailed spectroscopic analysis of the DA stars in the SPY. Atmospheric parameters effective temperature and surface gravity are determined for normal DAs. Double-degenerate binaries, DAs with magnetic fields or dM companions, are classified and discussed.

- Description:
- We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the stars with helium-dominated spectra in the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Atmospheric parameters, masses, and abundances of trace hydrogen are determined and discussed in the context of spectral evolution of white dwarfs. The spectra are compared with theoretical model atmospheres using a {chi}^2^ fitting technique, leading to determinations of effective temperature, surface gravity, and hydrogen abundance. Our final sample contains 71 objects, of which 6 are new detections and 14 are reclassified from DB to DBA because of the presence of H lines. One is a cool DO with weak HeII lines, 2 are composite DB+dM. 55% of the DB sample show hydrogen and are thus DBA, a significantly higher fraction than found before.

- Description:
- We have developed a procedure (so called PAPA) for measurement of magnitudes (about 0.1mag accurate) and positions (with accuracy better than 0.5arcsec) of all the objects present on photographic plates digitised with the MAMA machine. This homogeneous procedure was applied to four Schmidt plates - in U, B and twice V - covering the Palomar-Sky-Survey field PS +30deg 13h00m, a 40-square-degree zone at the North Galactic Pole. A general-interest exhaustive tricolour catalogue of 19542 star-like objects down to V=20.0 has been produced and we selected 1681 quasar candidates on the basis of ultraviolet excess and, when possible, absence of any measurable proper motion. The astrometric and photometric catalogue of the candidates is given in electronic form.

- UV-excess quasar candidates around NGC 450
- Short Name:
- J/A+AS/123/529

- Description:
- We describe the results of a survey for moderately bright quasars performed in a 20.6-square-degree field around the galaxy NGC 450. The quasar candidates we re-selected on the basis of their ultraviolet excess: by comparative visual inspection of the double image of each single object on a U/B dual-exposure Schmidt photographic plate, 95 primary and 45 secondary quasar candidates were selected on the basis of their U image being too bright. The spectroscopic identification of the primary candidates led to the discovery of 59 bona fide quasars (out of which 6 were previously known). The Palomar Schmidt plate was digitised using the MAMA measuring machine and the outcoming data reduced using ad hoc procedures. A photometric calibration allowed us to derive values for the limiting magnitudes and for the U-B index selection threshold of the survey. A catalogue containing 60 quasars is presented with accurate positions, magnitudes and additional information such as redshifts. We studied the spatial distribution of the objects and detected, for the quasars of our sample, a significant deviation from randomness in the form of a propensity to cluster in pairs on the celestial sphere with a typical scale of about 10arcmin. We also formally detected a tendency towards a 3-D clustering, but this result is induced by a single pair of quasars. A forthcoming paper will deal with a similar work performed in a field around NGC 520; the latter field is located directly to the North of the present one and slightly overlaps it.
