- A collection of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is available in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CALSPEC database that is based on calculated model atmospheres for pure hydrogen white dwarfs (WDs). A much larger set (~100000) of UV SEDs covering the range (1150-3350 {AA}) with somewhat lower quality are available in the IUE database. IUE low-dispersion flux distributions are compared with CALSPEC to provide a correction that places IUE fluxes on the CALSPEC scale. While IUE observations are repeatable to only 4%-10% in regions of good sensitivity, the average flux corrections have a precision of 2%-3%. Our re-calibration places the IUE flux scale on the current UV reference standard and is relevant for any project based on IUE archival data, including our planned comparison of GALEX to the corrected IUE fluxes. IUE SEDs may be used to plan observations and cross-calibrate data from future missions, so the IUE flux calibration must be consistent with HST instrumental calibrations to the best possible precision.

- Stellar population models of absorption-line indices are an important tool for the analysis of stellar population spectra. They are most accurately modelled through empirical calibrations of absorption-line indices with the stellar parameters such as effective temperature, metallicity and surface gravity, which are the so-called fitting functions. Here we present new empirical fitting functions for the 25 optical Lick absorption-line indices based on the new stellar library Medium resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra (MILES). The major improvements with respect to the Lick/IDS library are the better sampling of stellar parameter space, a generally higher signal-to-noise ratio and a careful flux calibration. In fact, we find that errors on individual index measurements in MILES are considerably smaller than in Lick/IDS. Instead, we find the rms of the residuals between the final fitting functions and the data to be dominated by errors in the stellar parameters. We provide fitting functions for both Lick/IDS and MILES spectral resolutions and compare our results with other fitting functions in the literature.

- We have made radio observations of 87 optically selected quasars at 5 GHz with the VLA in order to measure the radio power for these objects and hence determine how the fraction of radio-loud quasars varies with redshift and optical luminosity. The sample has been selected from the recently completed Edinburgh Quasar Survey and covers a redshift range of 0.3{<=}z{<=}1.5 and an optical absolute magnitude range of (-26.5){<=}M_B_{<=}(-23.5) (h=1/2, q_o_=1/2). We have also matched other existing surveys with the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters and NRAO VLA Sky Survey radio catalogs and combined these data so that the optical luminosity-redshift plane is now far better sampled than before. We have fitted a model to the probability of a quasar being radio-loud as a function of absolute magnitude and redshift, and from this model we infer the radio-loud and radio-quiet optical luminosity functions. The radio-loud optical luminosity function is featureless and flatter than the radio-quiet one. It evolves at a marginally slower rate if quasars evolve by density evolution, but the difference in the rate of evolutions of the two different classes is much less than was previously thought.

- Far-infrared line and continuum fluxes are presented for a sample of 227 galaxies observed with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO, Kessler et al., 1996A&A...315L..27K). The galaxy sample includes normal star-forming systems, starbursts, and active galactic nuclei covering a wide range of colors and morphologies. The data set spans some 1300 line fluxes, 600 line upper limits, and 800 continuum fluxes. Several fine-structure emission lines are detected that arise in either photodissociation or HII regions: [OIII] 52um, [NIII] 57um, [OI] 63um, [OIII] 88um, [NII] 122um, [OI] 145um, and [CII] 158um. Molecular lines such as OH at 53, 79, 84, 119, and 163um, and H_2_O at 58, 66, 75, 101, and 108um are also detected in some galaxies. In addition to those lines emitted by the target galaxies, serendipitous detections of Milky Way [CII] 158um and an unidentified line near 74um in NGC 1068 are also reported. Finally, continuum fluxes at 52, 57, 63, 88, 122, 145, 158, and 170um are derived for a subset of galaxies in which the far-infrared emission is contained within the ~75" ISO LWS beam. The statistics of this large database of continuum and line fluxes, including trends in line ratios with the far-infrared color and infrared-to-optical ratio, are explored.

The electronic version of this catalog has made small changes to the original version in an attempt to better identify positions with their source names. Where there was no entry on a line for the source name or position in the published version, data from the previous line was repeated.

- Measurements of element abundances in galaxies from astrophysical spectroscopy depend sensitively on the atomic data used. With the goal of making the latest atomic data accessible to the community, we present a compilation of selected atomic data for resonant absorption lines at wavelengths longward of 911.753{AA} (the HI Lyman limit), for key heavy elements (heavier than atomic number 5) of astrophysical interest. In particular, we focus on the transitions of those ions that have been observed in the Milky Way interstellar medium (ISM), the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way and/or other galaxies, and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We provide wavelengths, oscillator strengths, associated accuracy grades, and references to the oscillator strength determinations. We also attempt to compare and assess the recent oscillator strength determinations. For about 22% of the lines that have updated oscillator strength values, the differences between the former values and the updated ones are >~0.1dex. Our compilation will be a useful resource for absorption line studies of the ISM, as well as studies of the CGM and IGM traced by sight lines to quasars and gamma-ray bursts. Studies (including those enabled by future generations of extremely large telescopes) of absorption by galaxies against the light of background galaxies will also benefit from our compilation.

- We report the discovery of a buried, active supermassive black hole (SMBH) in SDSS J085153.64+392611.76, a bulgeless Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxy. Keck near-infrared observations reveal a hidden broad-line region, allowing for the rare case where strong constraints can be placed on both the BH mass and bulge component. Using virial mass estimators, we obtain a BH mass of log(M_BH_/M_{sun}_)=6.78+/-0.50. This is one of the only Sy2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) hosted in a bulgeless galaxy with a virial BH mass estimate and could provide important constraints on the formation scenarios of the BH seed population. The lack of a bulge component suggests that the SMBH has grown quiescently, likely caused by secular processes independent of major mergers. In the absence of a detectable bulge component, we find the M_BH_-M_stellar_ relation to be more reliable than the M_BH_-M_bulge_ relation. In addition, we detect extended narrow Pa{alpha} emission that allows us to create a rotation curve where we see counterrotating gas within the central kiloparsec. Possible causes of this counterrotation include a galactic bar or disruption of the inner gas by a recent fly-by of a companion galaxy. This in turn could have triggered accretion onto the central SMBH in the current AGN phase.

- We present a multiwavelength study of the active galactic nucleus in the nearby (D=14.1Mpc) low-mass galaxy IC750, which has circumnuclear 22GHz water maser emission. The masers trace a nearly edge-on, warped disk ~0.2pc in diameter, coincident with the compact nuclear X-ray source that lies at the base of the ~kiloparsec-scale extended X-ray emission. The position-velocity structure of the maser emission indicates that the central black hole (BH) has a mass less than 1.4x105M{sun}. Keplerian rotation curves fitted to these data yield enclosed masses between 4.1x104M{sun} and 1.4x105M{sun}, with a mode of 7.2x104M{sun}. Fitting the optical spectrum, we measure a nuclear stellar velocity dispersion {sigma }*=110.7_-13.4_^+12.1^km/s. From near-infrared photometry, we fit a bulge mass of (7.3{+/-}2.7)x108M{sun} and a stellar mass of 1.4x1010M{sun}. The mass upper limit of the intermediate-mass BH in IC750 falls roughly two orders of magnitude below the MBH-{sigma}* relation and roughly one order of magnitude below the MBH-MBulge and MBH-M* relations-larger than the relations' intrinsic scatters of 0.58{+/-}0.09dex, 0.69dex, and 0.65{+/-}0.09dex, respectively. These offsets could be due to larger scatter at the low-mass end of these relations. Alternatively, BH growth is intrinsically inefficient in galaxies with low bulge and/or stellar masses, which causes the BHs to be undermassive relative to their hosts, as predicted by some galaxy evolution simulations.

- We investigate directly imaging exoplanets around eclipsing binaries using the eclipse as a natural tool for dimming the binary and thus increasing the planet to star brightness contrast. At eclipse, the binary becomes pointlike, making coronagraphy possible. We select binaries where the planet-star contrast would be boosted by >10x during eclipse, making it possible to detect a planet that is >~10x fainter or in a star system that is ~2-3x more massive than otherwise. Our approach will yield insights into planet occurrence rates around binaries versus individual stars. We consider both self-luminous (SL) and reflected light (RL) planets. In the SL case, we select binaries whose age is young enough so that an orbiting SL planet would remain luminous; in U Cep and AC Sct, respectively, our method is sensitive to SL planets of ~4.5 and ~9 M_J_ with current ground- or near-future space-based instruments and ~1.5 and ~6 M_J_ with future ground-based observatories. In the RL case, there are three nearby (<~50 pc) systems-V1412 Aql, RR Cae, and RT Pic-around which a Jupiter-like planet at a planet-star separation of >~20mas might be imaged with future ground- and space-based coronagraphs. A Venus-like planet at the same distance might be detectable around RR Cae and RT Pic. A habitable Earth-like planet represents a challenge; while the planet-star contrast at eclipse and planet flux are accessible with a 6-8m space telescope, the planet-star separation is 1/3-1/4 of the angular separation limit of modern coronagraphy.
