- We have conducted near-infrared spectroscopy of 26 faint objects around young stellar objects in the Taurus molecular cloud. These objects were detected during a course of near-infrared coronagraphic searches for companions around 72 young stellar objects with the Subaru Telescope and the near-infrared coronagraph CIAO (coronagraphic imager with adaptive optics). A comparison of the Subaru and HST archive images revealed that three central stars and faint companions share common proper motions, suggesting that they are physically associated with each other. None of the 26 sources show deep water absorption bands at near-infrared, except for DH Tau B. This result indicates that all of them, but DH Tau B, have a high photospheric temperature or a large amount of excess from circumstellar materials.

- We perform a search for faint, common proper motion companions of Hipparcos stars using the recently published Lepine-Shara Prope-Motion-North catalog of stars with proper motion {mu}>0.15"/yr. Our survey uncovers a total of 521 systems with angular separations 3"<{Delta}{theta}<1500", with 15 triples and 1 quadruple. Our new list of wide systems with Hipparcos primaries includes 130 systems identified here for the first time, including 44 in which the secondary star has V>15.0. Our census is statistically complete for secondaries with angular separations 20"<{Delta}{theta}<300" and apparent magnitudes V<19.0. Overall, we find that at least 9.5% of nearby (d<100pc) Hipparcos stars have distant stellar companions with projected orbital separations s>1000AU.

- We carried out VLA observations in A configuration at 74-MHz of a new sample of faint Compact Steep-Spectrum (CSS) radio sources as part of a comprehensive project to study the nature and evolution of peaked-spectrum radio sources. In conjunction with higher frequency spectral information this has enabled us to determine the peak frequency and peak flux density of the spectral turnover for 35 faint CSS radio sources. Spectra are presented. An analysis is given of the quality of the images and their suitability for integrated intensity measurements of the CSS radio sources.

- Over six years of operation, the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey (CRTS) has identified 1043 cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates - the largest sample of CVs from a single survey to date. Here, we provide spectroscopic identification of 85 systems fainter than g>=19, including three AM Canum Venaticorum binaries, one helium-enriched CV, one polar and one new eclipsing CV. We analyse the outburst properties of the full sample and show that it contains a large fraction of low-accretion-rate CVs with long outburst recurrence times. We argue that most of the high-accretion-rate dwarf novae in the survey footprint have already been found and that future CRTS discoveries will be mostly low-accretion-rate systems. We find that CVs with white-dwarf-dominated spectra have significantly fewer outbursts in their CRTS light curves compared to disc-dominated CVs, reflecting the difference in their accretion rates. Comparing the CRTS sample to other samples of CVs, we estimate the overall external completeness to be 23.6 per cent, but show that as much as 56 per cent of CVs have variability amplitudes that are too small to be selected using the transient selection criteria employed by current ground-based surveys. - Intermediate resolution spectroscopy from the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope is analysed for 63 photometrically selected low-mass (0.08-0.30M_{sun}_) candidates of the open cluster NGC 2547. We have confirmed membership for most of these stars using radial velocities, and found that lithium remains undepleted for cluster stars with I>17.54+/-0.14 and Ks>14.86+/-0.12. From these results, several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models give almost model independent ages of 34-36Myr, with a precision of 10%. These ages are only slightly larger than the ages of 25-35(+/-5)Myr obtained using the same models to fit isochrones to higher mass stars descending towards the zero-age main-sequence, both in empirically calibrated and theoretical colour-magnitude diagrams. This agreement between age determinations in different mass ranges is an excellent test of the current generation of low-mass pre-main-sequence stellar models and lends confidence to ages determined with either method between 30 and 120Myr.

- We present the first results from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Grism Parallel Survey, a large program obtaining deep, slitless ACS grism (R~100) spectroscopy of high-latitude HST parallel fields. We identify 601 compact emission-line galaxies at z<=1.6, reaching emission lines to a flux limit of >~5x10^-18^ergs/cm^2^/s (3{sigma}). We determine redshifts by cross-correlation of the target spectra with template spectra, followed by visual inspection. We measure star formation rates from the observed [OII]{lambda}3727, [OIII]{lambda}5007, and H{alpha} line fluxes.

- We present echelle spectroscopy in the 3500-10300{AA} range of the Hourglass Nebula, which is embedded in the Galactic H II region M8. The data were obtained using the 2.1m telescope at Observatorio Astronomico Nacional in San Pedro Mqrtir, Baja California. We have measured the intensities of 274 emission lines, in particular 88 permitted lines of C^+^, N^0^, N^+^, O^0^, O^+^, Ne^0^, S^0^, S^+^, Si^0^, Si^+^, and Si^++^, some of them produced by recombination only and others mainly by fluorescence. We have determined electron temperatures and densities using different line intensity ratios. We derive the He^+^, C^++^, O^+^, and O^++^ ionic abundances as well as - for the first time in a nebular object - the total O abundance from recombination lines; these nebular values are independent of the temperature structure of the nebula. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a large number of ions and elements; these abundances do depend on the temperature structure. Accurate t^2^ values have been derived by comparing the C^++^, O^+^, and O^++^ ionic abundances obtained making use of both collisionally excited lines and recombination lines. A comparison of the solar, Orion Nebula, and M8 chemical abundances is made.

- We present deep echelle spectrophotometry of the Galactic HII regions M16, M20 and NGC 3603. The data have been taken with the Very Large Telescope Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph in the 3100-10400{AA} range. We have detected more than 200 emission lines in each region. Physical conditions have been derived using different continuum and line intensity ratios. We have derived He^+^, C^++^ and O^++^ abundances from pure recombination lines as well as collisionally excited lines (CELs) for a large number of ions of different elements.

- We present infrared K-band photometry of complete samples of VLM candidates constructed from IIIaF and IVN plates in 10 fields taken as part of the POSSII and UKSRC surveys. Using the I-K colors constructed for these stars we estimate a bolometric luminosity function which extends to MBol=13.75. We find significant evidence for a luminosity function decreasing toward these luminosities.

- A sample of 123 radio sources that exhibit significant variations at 1.4GHz on a 7 year baseline has been created using FIRST VLA B-configuration data from 1995 and 2002 on a strip at {delta}=0 near the south Galactic cap. This sample spans the range of radio flux densities from ~2 to 1000mJy. It presents both in size and radio flux density range a unique starting point for variability studies of galaxies and quasars harboring lower luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs).
