- HST observations of clusters in NGC 3597

- Description:
- We have analyzed HST/WFPC2 images of NGC 3597 and find {=~}700 compact objects surrounding the galaxy with an average (B-R)_0_ {=~}0.6. We propose that the majority of these objects are young globular clusters. They have a spread in colors that is consistent with that expected for a population of young clusters with a common age and spread induced by photometric errors and reddening within NGC 3597.

- HST studies of the WLM globular cluster

- Description:
- We have obtained V and I images of the lone globular cluster that belongs to the dwarf Local Group irregular galaxy known as WLM. The color-magnitude diagram of the cluster shows that it is a normal old globular cluster with a well-defined giant branch reaching to M_V_=-2.5, a horizontal branch at M_V_=+0.5, and a subgiant branch extending to our photometry limit of M_V_=+2.0. A best fit to theoretical isochrones indicates that this cluster has a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.52{+/-}0.08 and an age of 14.8{+/-}0.6 Gyr, thus indicating that it is similar to normal old halo globulars in our Galaxy. From the fit we also find that the distance modulus of the cluster is 24.73{+/-}0.07 and the extinction is A_V_=0.07{+/-}0.06, both values that agree within the errors with data obtained for the galaxy itself by others.

- WFPC 2 imaging of young LMC clusters

- Description:
- We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) F160BW, F555W, and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330, in the Small Magellanic Cloud, and NGC 1818, 2004, and 2100, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colors of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and broadband colors and bolometric corrections for LMC and SMC metallicities. The use of the far-UV F160BW filter enables accurate determination of the effective temperatures for stars in the vicinity of the main-sequence turnoff and on the unevolved main sequence.
