- Absolute polarimetry observations of 33 pulsars were carried out with the Green Bank Telescope in the 1100-1900 MHz band using the Green Bank Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument. This group was selected to help complete a larger sample for which accurate proper-motion measurements were available. A combination of profile analysis using the core/double cone model and polarization-angle fitting methods were applied to estimate the "fiducial" longitude of the magnetic axis for each star and refer the linear polarization angle at that point to infinite frequency. As had been found previously, a number of the pulsars are found to have fiducial polarization directions that fall either along or at right angles to their proper-motion directions, whereas upwards of a third of the stars studied show alignments that are neither parallel nor orthogonal.

- We present total and polarized intensity images of 15 active galactic nuclei obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 7mm (43GHz) wavelength at 17 epochs from 1998 March to 2001 April. At some epochs the images are accompanied by nearly simultaneous polarization measurements at 3mm (86GHz) with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) array (Hat Creek, California), 1.35/0.85mm (230/350GHz) with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT; using SCUBA and its polarimeter, and at the Steward Observatory 1.5m telescope (Mount Lemmon, Arizona) with the Two-Holer Polarimeter/Photometer over an effective wavelength range of ~6000-7000{AA}. Here we analyze the 7mm images to define the properties of the jets of two radio galaxies, five BL Lac objects, and eight quasars on angular scales >~0.1mas. We determine the apparent velocities of 106 features in the jets.

- We have used the very large Jodrell Bank VLA Astrometric Survey/Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey 8.4-GHz surveys of flat-spectrum radio sources to test the hypothesis that there is a systematic alignment of polarization position angle vectors on cosmological scales of the type claimed by Hutsemekers et al. (2005, Cat. <J/A+A/441/915>). The polarization position angles of 4290 sources with polarized flux density 1mJy have been examined. They do not reveal large-scale alignments either as a whole or when split in half into high-redshift (z>=1.24) and low-redshift subsamples. Nor do the radio sources which lie in the specific areas covered by Hutsemekers et al. (<J/A+A/441/915>) show any significant effect. We have also looked at the position angles of parsec-scale jets derived from very long baseline interferometry observations and again find no evidence for systematic alignments. Finally, we have investigated the correlation between the polarization position angle and those of the parsec-scale jets. As expected, we find that there is a tendency for the polarization angles to be perpendicular to the jet angles. However, the difference in jet and polarization position angles does not show any systematic trend in different parts of the sky.

- We present 870{mu}m ALMA observations of polarized dust emission toward the Class II protoplanetary disk IM Lup. We find that the orientation of the polarized emission is along the minor axis of the disk, and that the value of the polarization fraction increases steadily toward the center of the disk, reaching a peak value of ~1.1%. All of these characteristics are consistent with models of self-scattering of submillimeter-wave emission from an optically thin inclined disk. The distribution of the polarization position angles across the disk reveals that, while the average orientation is along the minor axis, the polarization orientations show a significant spread in angles; this can also be explained by models of pure scattering. We compare the polarization with that of the Class I/II source HL Tau. A comparison of cuts of the polarization fraction across the major and minor axes of both sources reveals that IM Lup has a substantially higher polarization fraction than HL Tau toward the center of the disk. This enhanced polarization fraction could be due a number of factors, including higher optical depth in HL Tau, or scattering by larger dust grains in the more evolved IM Lup disk. However, models yield similar maximum grain sizes for both HL Tau (72{mu}m) and IM Lup (61{mu}m, this work). This reveals continued tension between grain-size estimates from scattering models and from models of the dust emission spectrum, which find that the bulk of the (unpolarized) emission in disks is most likely due to millimeter-sized (or even centimeter-sized) grains.

- We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of polarized dust emission from the protostellar source Ser-emb 8 at a linear resolution of 140au. Assuming models of dust-grain alignment hold, the observed polarization pattern gives a projected view of the magnetic field structure in this source. Contrary to expectations based on models of strongly magnetized star formation, the magnetic field in Ser-emb 8 does not exhibit an hourglass morphology. Combining the new ALMA data with previous observational studies, we can connect magnetic field structure from protostellar core (~80000au) to disk (~100au) scales. We compare our observations with four magnetohydrodynamic gravo-turbulence simulations made with the AREPO code that have initial conditions ranging from super-Alfvenic (weakly magnetized) to sub-Alfvenic (strongly magnetized). These simulations achieve the spatial dynamic range necessary to resolve the collapse of protostars from the parsec scale of star-forming clouds down to the ~100au scale probed by ALMA. Only in the very strongly magnetized simulation do we see both the preservation of the field direction from cloud to disk scales and an hourglass-shaped field at <1000au scales. We conduct an analysis of the relative orientation of the magnetic field and the density structure in both the Ser-emb 8 ALMA observations and the synthetic observations of the four AREPO simulations. We conclude that the Ser-emb 8 data are most similar to the weakly magnetized simulations, which exhibit random alignment, in contrast to the strongly magnetized simulation, where the magnetic field plays a role in shaping the density structure in the source. In the weak-field case, it is turbulence-not the magnetic field-that shapes the material that forms the protostar, highlighting the dominant role that turbulence can play across many orders of magnitude in spatial scale.

- We present the results from the first large (>100 sources) 3.5mm polarimetric survey of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This wavelength is favorable within the radio-millimeter range for measuring the intrinsic linearly polarized emission from AGNs, since in general it is only marginally affected by Faraday rotation of the electric vector position angle and depolarization. The I, Q, U, and V Stokes parameter observations were performed with the XPOL polarimeter at the IRAM 30m Telescope on different observing epochs from 2005 July (when most of the measurements were made) to 2009 October. Our sample consists of 145 flat-radio-spectrum AGNs with declination >-30{deg} (J2000.0) and flux density >~1Jy at ~86GHz, as measured at the IRAM 30m Telescope from 1978 to 1994. This constraint on the radio spectrum causes our sample to be dominated by blazars, which allows us to conduct new statistical studies on this class of high-luminosity, relativistically beamed emitters. Over our entire source sample, the luminosity of the jets is anticorrelated with the degree of linear polarization. Consistent with previous findings claiming larger Doppler factors for brighter {gamma}-ray blazars, quasars listed in our sample, and in the Fermi Large Area Telescope Bright Source Catalog (LBAS, Abdo et al., 2009ApJ...700..597A), show larger luminosities than non-LBAS ones, but our data do not allow us to confirm the same for BL Lac objects. Our new data can be used to estimate the 3.5mm AGN contribution to measurements of the linear polarization of the cosmic microwave background, such as those performed by the Planck satellite.

- Short millimeter observations of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) offer an excellent opportunity to study the physics of their synchrotron-emitting relativistic jets from where the bulk of radio and millimeter emission is radiated. On one hand, AGN jets and their emission cores are significantly less affected by Faraday rotation and depolarization than at longer wavelengths. On the other hand, the millimeter emission of AGN is dominated by the compact innermost regions in the jets, where the jet cannot be seen at longer wavelengths due to synchrotron opacity. We present the first simultaneous dual frequency 86GHz and 229GHz polarimetric survey of all four Stokes parameters for a large sample of 211 radio-loud active galactic nuclei, designed to be flux limited at 1Jy at 86GHz. Most of the observations were made in mid-August 2010 using the XPOL polarimeter on the IRAM 30m millimetric radio telescope.

- Highly reddened type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with low total-to-selective visual extinction ratio values, RV, also show peculiar linear polarization wavelength dependencies with peak polarizations at short wavelengths ({lambda}_max_<~0.4um). It is not clear why sightlines to SNe Ia display such different continuum polarization profiles from interstellar sightlines in the Milky Way with similar RV values. We investigate polarization profiles of a sample of Galactic stars with low RV values, along anomalous extinction sightlines, with the aim to find similarities to the polarization profiles that we observe in SN Ia sightlines. We undertook spectropolarimetry of 14 stars, used archival data for 3 additional stars, and ran dust extinction and polarization simulations (by adopting the picket-fence alignment model) to infer a simple dust model (size distribution, alignment) that can reproduce the observed extinction and polarization curves. Our sample of Galactic stars with low RV values and anomalous extinction sightlines displays normal polarization profiles with an average {lambda}_max_~0.53um, and is consistent within 3{sigma} to a larger coherent sample of Galactic stars from the literature. Despite the low RV values of dust toward the stars in our sample, the polarization curves do not show any similarity to the continuum polarization curves observed toward SNe Ia with low RV values. There is a correlation between the best-fit Serkowski parameters K and {lambda}_max_, but we did not find any significant correlation between RV and {lambda}_max_. Our simulations show that the K-{lambda}_max_ relationship is an intrinsic property of polarization. Furthermore, we have shown that in order to reproduce polarization curves with normal {lambda}_max_ and low RV values, a population of large (a >=0.1um) interstellar silicate grains must be contained in the dust composition.
