- We selected a large sample of O-B stars that were considered as (candidate) slowly pulsating B, beta Cep, and Maia stars after the analysis of their Hipparcos data. We analysed both the Hipparcos data and our new seven passband Geneva data collected for these stars during the first three years of scientific operations of the Mercator telescope. We performed a frequency analysis for 28 targets with more than 50 high-quality Mercator observations to improve their variability classification. We searched for frequencies by using two independent frequency analysis methods and we applied a 3.6 S/N-level criterion to locate the significant peaks in the periodograms. In total we detected 60 frequencies, among which 32 new ones. We classified 21 objects as pulsating variables (7 new confirmed pulsating stars, including 2 hybrid beta Cep/SPB stars), 6 as non-pulsating variables (binaries or spotted stars), and 1 as photometrically constant stars. For the 27 confirmed variable stars in our sample, we give the values and the corresponding standard errors of the accepted frequencies, the amplitudes, the phases, the constant terms, and the residual standard deviations as found in the seven filters of the Geneva photometric system and in the Hp filter of the Hipparcos photometric system by fitting the data with a superposition of sinusoidal models with reference epoch HJD=2450000.

- The 1982-1985 photometry (VBLUW system) of the O3V+O8V close binary HD 93205 has been rediscussed because of new insights into its true nature and orbital changes. By comparing this data set with the one obtained by Antokhina et al. (2000ApJ...529..463A) in 1993, and using the same ephemeris to construct the light curve in the phase diagram, the effect of the apsidal motion became obvious: a phase shift between the two light curves and a small change of the shape. A phase-locked light variation in the L passband (containing the higher Balmer lines) is clearly present in the 1982-1985 data set and is presumably due to absorption if the O8 star is seen through cooler inter-binary gas, e.g. the bow-shock between the two colliding winds.

- OVz stars, a subclass of O-type dwarfs characterized by having HeII{lambda}4686 stronger in absorption than any other helium line in their blue-violet spectra, have been suggested to be on or near the zero-age main sequence (ZAMS). If their youth were confirmed, they would be key objects with which to advance our knowledge of the physical properties of massive stars in the early stages of their lives. We test the hypothesis of OVz stars being at a different (younger) evolutionary stage than are normal O-type dwarfs. We have performed the first comprehensive quantitative spectroscopic analysis of a statistically meaningful sample of OVz and OV stars in the same star-forming region, exploiting the large number of OVz stars identified by the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We obtained the stellar and wind parameters of 38 OVz stars (and a control sample of 46 OV stars) using the FASTWIND stellar atmosphere code and the IACOB-GBAT, a grid-based tool developed for automated quantitative analysis of optical spectra of O stars. In the framework of a differential study, we compared the physical and evolutionary properties of both samples, locating the stars in the logg vs. logT_eff_, logQ vs. logT_eff_, and logL/L_{sun}_ vs. logT_eff_ diagrams. We also investigated the predictions of the FASTWIND code regarding the OVz phenomenon.

- We introduce a new survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Here we present observations of 269 Galactic stars with the FLAMES-Giraffe Spectrograph (R~=25000), in fields centered on the open clusters NGC 3293, NGC 4755 and NGC 6611. These data are supplemented by a further 50 targets observed with the Fibre-Fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS, R=48000).

- We have previously analysed the spectra of 135 early B-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and found several groups of stars that have chemical compositions that conflict with the theory of rotational mixing. Here we extend this study to Galactic and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) metallicities. We provide chemical compositions for ~50 Galactic and ~100 SMC early B-type stars and compare these to the LMC results. These samples cover a range of projected rotational velocities up to ~300km/s and hence are well suited to testing rotational mixing models. The surface nitrogen abundances are utilised as a probe of the mixing process since nitrogen is synthesized in the core of the stars and mixed to the surface.

- The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) is an ESO Large Programme that has obtained multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of over 800 massive stars in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Here we introduce our scientific motivations and give an overview of the survey targets, including optical and near-infrared photometry and comprehensive details of the data reduction. One of the principal objectives was to detect massive binary systems via variations in their radial velocities, thus shaping the multi-epoch observing strategy. Spectral classifications are given for the massive emission-line stars observed by the survey, including the discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet star (VFTS 682, classified as WN5h), 2' to the northeast of R136. To illustrate the diversity of objects encompassed by the survey, we investigate the spectral properties of sixteen targets identified by Gruendl & Chu (2009, Cat. J/ApJS/184/172) from Spitzer photometry as candidate young stellar objects or stars with notable mid-infrared excesses. Detailed spectral classification and quantitative analysis of the O- and B-type stars in the VFTS sample, paying particular attention to the effects of rotational mixing and binarity, will be presented in a series of future articles to address fundamental questions in both stellar and cluster evolution.

- The innermost astronomical unit (au) in protoplanetary disks is a key region for stellar and planet formation, as exoplanet searches have shown a large occurrence of close-in planets, located within the first au around their host star. We aim to reveal the morphology of the disk inner rim using near-infrared interferometric observations with milli-arcsecond resolution provided by near-infrared multi-telescope interferometry. Methods: We provide model-independent reconstructed images of 15 objects selected from the Herbig AeBe survey carried out with VLTI/PIONIER, using the semi-parametric approach for image reconstruction of chromatic objects (SPARCO). We propose a set of methods to reconstruct and analyze the images in a consistent way. 40% of the systems (6/15) are found to be centro-symmetric at the angular resolution of the observations. For the rest of the objects, we find evidence for asymmetric emission due to moderate-to-strong inclination of a disk-like structure for ~30% of the objects (5/15), and non-centro-symmetric morphology due to an non-axisymmetric and possible variable environment (4/15, ~27%). Among the systems with disk-like structure, 20% (3/15) show a resolved dust-free cavity. Finally, we do not detect extended emission beyond the inner rim. The image reconstruction process is a powerful tool to reveal complex disk inner rim morphologies which is complementary to the fit of geometrical models. At the angular resolution reached by near-infrared interferometric observations most of the images are compatible with a centrally peaked emission (no cavity). For the most resolved targets, image reconstruction reveals morphologies that cannot be reproduced by generic parametric models (e.g., perturbed inner rims, complex brightness distributions). Moreover, the non-axisymmetric disks show that the spatial resolution probed by optical interferometers makes the observations of the near-infrared emission (inside a few au) sensitive to temporal evolution with a time-scale down to few weeks. The evidence of non-axisymmetric emission that cannot be explained by simple inclination and radiative transfer effects requires for alternative explanations such as a warping of the inner disks. Interferometric observations can therefore be used to follow the evolution of the asymmetry of those disks at an au or sub-au scale.

- We present Very Large Telescope/Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared H- and K-band spectra of potential central stars within the inner 8"-by-8" regions of 55 MIPSGAL "bubbles" (MBs), sub-arcminute circumstellar shells discovered in the mid-IR survey of the Galactic plane with Spitzer/MIPS. At magnitudes brighter than 15, we detect a total of 230 stars in the K band and 179 stars in the H band. We spectrally identify 145 stars in all but three MBs, with average magnitudes of 13.8 and 12.7 respectively, using spectral libraries and previous studies of near-IR stellar spectra. We also use tabulated intrinsic stellar magnitudes and colors to derive distances and extinction values, and to better constrain the classifications of the stars. We reliably identify the central sources for 21 of the 55 MBs, which we classify as follows: one Wolf-Rayet, three luminous blue variable candidates, four early-type (O to F), and 15 late-type (G to M) stars. The 21 central sources are, on average, one magnitude fainter than these in the most recent study of MBs, and we notice a significant drop in the fraction of massive star candidates. For the 34 remaining MBs in our sample, we are unable to identify the central sources due to confusion, low spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio, and/or lack of detections in the images near the centers of the bubbles. We discuss how our findings compare with previous studies and support the trend, for the most part, between the shells' morphologies in the mid-IR and central sources spectral types.

- Tablea1 contains photoelectric VRI Cousins photometry for 63 Am stars observed on the 17th June, 1996 with the 1.52m telescope of the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional (O.A.N.) at Calar Alto (Almeria, Spain), and on the 25th and 26th of the same month using the 1m Jakobus Kapteyn telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (O.R.M., Canary Islands, Spain). The reduction procedure followed is explained in Rossello et al. (1985A&AS...59..399R) and Landolt (1983, Cat. <II/118>; 1983AJ.....88..853L) standard stars were used. We provide the V magnitude, the (V-R) and (V-I) colour indices, their associated standard errors and the number of observations performed for each star.
