- Our proposed method to study the star-formation histories in nearby irregulars is here applied to NGC 6822. To this purpose we have obtained accurate CCD photometry of three regions in the galaxy, reaching V=23.5 with the required accuracy of {sigma}_BVR_<=0.1mag. Major information on the stellar populations, star-formation rates, and initial mass functions of these regions in the last 1Gyr are derived from the comparison of the observational color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions with the corresponding synthetic diagrams and luminosity functions generated by a numerical simulation code based on stellar evolutionary tracks. We find that in the last 1Gyr the star-formation activity has been rather continuous, possibly occurring in long episodes of moderate activity separated by short quiescent periods, and that the initial mass function exponent a is in the vicinity of Salpeter's value, i.e., slightly flatter than in the solar neighborhood. The studied regions of NGC 6822 appear to contain different stellar populations. The preferred star formation regime for region A is a continuous activity coupled with a moderately flat {alpha}. For region C, instead, our best models suggest a discontinuous star formation and a moderately steep {alpha}. NGC 6822 is the last object of our original sample of five nearby irregulars. We can then draw the scenario resulting from this sample: most of the observed fields appear to have experienced a gasping regime of star formation, with average exponent {alpha}=2.35 for the initial mass function. Despite their small sizes, the majority of the sample galaxies contain different stellar populations in different regions.

- A detailed imaging analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) has been accomplished using a six-image mosaic from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. The quality of the data is such that contamination by foreground stars and background galaxies is negligible for all but the faintest 5% of the GC luminosity function. This enables the study of an effectively pure sample of 659 GCs until ~2mag fainter than the turnover magnitude, which occurs at M^TOM^_V_=-7.60+/-0.06 for an assumed m-M=29.77. Two GC metallicity subpopulations are easily distinguishable, with the metal-poor subpopulation exhibiting a smaller intrinsic dispersion in color compared to the metal-rich subpopulation.

- The stellar content of the Im galaxy NGC 2366 is discussed on the basis of CCD BVR photometry. The three brightest blue and red stars have been used to estimate its distance, obtaining a value of 2.9pc. The spatial distribution of the young stellar population is discussed in the light of the integrated color indices and the color-magnitude diagrams of different zones of the galaxy. A generalized star formation burst seems to have taken place about 50Myr ago. The youngest stars are preferentially formed in the South-West part of the bar, where the giant H II complex NGC 2363 is located, being younger and bluer. The bar seems to play a role favoring star formation in one of its extremes. Self-propagation however, does not seem to be triggering star formation at large scale. A small region, populated by very young stars has also been found at the East of the galaxy.

- We present a B, V color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Milky Way dwarf satellite Ursa Major II (UMa II), spanning the magnitude range from V~15 to V~23.5mag and extending over an 18x18 arcmin^2^ area centered on the Galaxy. Our photometry goes down to about 2 mag below the Galaxy's main-sequence turnoff that we detected at V~21.5 mag. We have discovered a bona fide RR Lyrae variable star in UMa II, which we use to estimate a conservative dereddened distance modulus for the galaxy of (m-M)_0_=17.70+/-0.04+/-0.12mag, where the first error accounts for the uncertainties of the calibrated photometry, and the second reflects our lack of information on the metallicity of the star. The corresponding distance to UMa II is 34.7^+0.6^_-0.7_(^+2.0^_-1.9_)kpc. Our photometry shows evidence of a spread in the Galaxy's subgiant branch, compatible with a spread in metal abundance in the range between Z=0.0001 and Z=0.001. Based on our estimate of the distance, a comparison of the fiducial lines of the Galactic globular clusters M68 and M5 ([Fe/H]=-2.27+/-0.04 dex and -1.33+/-0.02 dex, respectively), with the position on the CMD of spectroscopically confirmed Galaxy members, may suggest the existence of stellar populations of different metal abundance/age in the central region of UMa II.

- The sample of Byurakan-IRAS galaxies (BIG) has been created based on optical identifications of IRAS Point Source Catalog (PSC) at high galactic latitudes. As a result, 1178 galaxies have been identified. 172 of them have been observed spectroscopically with Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO, Armenia) 2.6m, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia) 6m and Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP, France) 1.93m telescopes. Later on, spectra were obtained for more 83 BIG objects in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have extracted and studied these spectra, classified them and measured spectral features. Diagnostic diagrams have been built to distinguish starbursts (SB), LINERs and Seyfert galaxies. Cross-correlations were made for these objects with multiwavelength (MW) catalogues and their physical properties were studied. Among these 83 objects, 55 HII, 8 Seyfert galaxies, 2 LINERs, 4 other AGN, 6 composite spectrum objects, and 8 other emission-line galaxies have been revealed. Three of these objects are Ultra-Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRG).

- We explore the environments of two radio galaxies at z~1.5, 7C 1751+6809 and 7C 1756+6520, using deep optical and near-infrared imaging. Our data cover 15x15arcmin^2^ fields around the radio galaxies. We develop and apply BzK color criteria to select cluster member candidates around the radio galaxies and find no evidence of an overdensity of red galaxies within 2Mpc of 7C 1751+6809. In contrast, 7C 1756+6520 shows a significant overdensity of red galaxies within 2Mpc of the radio galaxy, by a factor of 3.1+/-0.8 relative to the four MUSYC fields. At small separation (r<6"), this radio galaxy also has one z>1.4 evolved galaxy candidate, one z>1.4 star-forming galaxy candidate, and an AGN candidate (at indeterminate redshift).

- Spectroscopic abundance determinations for stars spanning a Hubble time in age are necessary in order to determine unambiguously the evolutionary histories of galaxies. Using FORS1 in multi-object spectroscopy mode on ANTU (UT1) at the ESO VLT on Paranal, we have obtained near-infrared spectra from which we have measured the equivalent widths of the two strongest Ca II triplet lines to determine metal abundances for a sample of red giant branch stars, selected from ESO NTT optical (I, V-I) photometry of three nearby Local Group galaxies: the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal, the Fornax dwarf spheroidal and the dwarf irregular NGC 6822. The summed equivalent width of the two strongest lines in the Ca II triplet absorption-line feature, centred at 8500{AA}, can be readily converted into an [Fe/H] abundance using the previously established calibrations by Armandroff & Da Costa (1991AJ....101.1329A) and Rutledge, Hesser & Stetson (1997, Cat. <J/PASP/109/883>). We have measured metallicities for 37 stars in Sculptor, 32 stars in Fornax and 23 stars in NGC 6822, yielding more precise estimates of the metallicity distribution functions for these galaxies than it is possible to obtain photometrically. In the case of NGC 6822, this is the first direct measurement of the abundances of the intermediate-age and old stellar populations. We find metallicity spreads in each galaxy which are broadly consistent with the photometric width of the red giant branch, although the abundances of individual stars do not always appear to correspond to their colour. This is almost certainly predominantly due to a highly variable star formation rate with time in these galaxies, which results in a non-uniform, non-globular-cluster-like evolution of the Ca/Fe ratio.

- We use Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) intermediate-resolution (R~6500) spectra of individual red giant branch stars in the near-infrared Ca ii triplet (CaT) region to investigate the wide-area metallicity properties and internal kinematics of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). Our final sample consists of 174 probable members of Sextans with accurate line-of-sight velocities (+/-2km/s) and CaT [Fe/H] measurements (+/-0.2dex).

- We demonstrate that low-resolution CaII triplet (CaT) spectroscopic estimates of the overall metallicity ([Fe/H]) of individual red giant branch (RGB) stars in two nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) agree to +/-0.1-0.2dex with detailed high-resolution spectroscopic determinations for the same stars over the range -2.5<[Fe/H]<-0.5. For this study, we used a sample of 129 stars observed in low- and high-resolution modes with VLT/FLAMES in the Sculptor and Fornax dSphs. We also present the data-reduction steps we used in our low-resolution analysis and show that the typical accuracy of our velocity and CaT [Fe/H] measurement is ~2km/s and 0.1dex, respectively. We conclude that CaT[Fe/H] relations calibrated on globular clusters can be applied with confidence to RGB stars in composite stellar populations over the range -2.5<[Fe/H]<-0.5.
