- Description:
- We explore the relationships between the chemistry, ages, and locations of stars in the Galaxy using asteroseismic data from the K2 mission and spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. Previous studies have used giant stars in the Kepler field to map the relationship between the chemical composition and the ages of stars at the solar circle. Consistent with prior work, we find that stars with high [{alpha}/Fe] have distinct, older ages in comparison to stars with low [{alpha}/Fe]. We provide age estimates for red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Kepler field, which support and build upon previous age estimates by taking into account the effect of {alpha}-enrichment on opacity. Including this effect for [{alpha}/Fe]-rich stars results in up to 10% older ages for low- mass stars relative to corrected solar mixture calculations. This is a significant effect that Galactic archeology studies should take into account. Looking beyond the Kepler field, we estimate ages for 735 RGB stars from the K2 mission, mapping age trends as a function of the line of sight. We find that the age distributions for low- and high-[{alpha}/Fe] stars converge with increasing distance from the Galactic plane, in agreement with suggestions from earlier work. We find that K2 stars with high [{alpha}/Fe] appear to be younger than their counterparts in the Kepler field, overlapping more significantly with a similarly aged low-[{alpha}/Fe] population. This observation may suggest that star formation or radial migration proceeds unevenly in the Galaxy.

- Description:
- We present stellar age distributions of the Milky Way bulge region using ages for ~6000 high-luminosity (log(g)<2.0), metal-rich ([Fe/H]>=-0.5) bulge stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment. Ages are derived using The Cannon label-transfer method, trained on a sample of nearby luminous giants with precise parallaxes for which we obtain ages using a Bayesian isochrone-matching technique. We find that the metal-rich bulge is predominantly composed of old stars (>8Gyr). We find evidence that the planar region of the bulge (|Z_GC_|<=0.25kpc) is enriched in metallicity, Z, at a faster rate (dZ/dt~0.0034Gyr^-1^) than regions farther from the plane (dZ/dt~0.0013Gyr^-1^ at |Z_GC_|>1.00kpc). We identify a nonnegligible fraction of younger stars (age ~2-5Gyr) at metallicities of +0.2<[Fe/H]<+0.4. These stars are preferentially found in the plane (|Z_GC_|<=0.25kpc) and at R_cy_~2-3kpc, with kinematics that are more consistent with rotation than are the kinematics of older stars at the same metallicities. We do not measure a significant age difference between stars found inside and outside the bar. These findings show that the bulge experienced an initial starburst that was more intense close to the plane than far from the plane. Then, star formation continued at supersolar metallicities in a thin disk at 2kpc<~R_cy_<~3kpc until ~2Gyr ago.

- A 4-6GHz RRL survey in the Milky Way

- Description:
- We performed a radio recombination line (RRL) survey to construct a high-mass star-forming region (HMSFR) sample in the Milky Way based on the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer point-source catalog. The survey was observed with the Shanghai 65m Tianma radio telescope covering 10 hydrogen RRL transitions ranging from H98{alpha} to H113{alpha} (corresponding to the rest frequencies of 4.5-6.9GHz) simultaneously. Out of 3348 selected targets, we identified an HMSFR sample consisting of 517 sources traced by RRLs; a large fraction of this sample (486) is located near the Galactic Plane (|b|<2{deg}). In addition to the hydrogen RRLs, we also detected helium and carbon RRLs toward 49 and 23 sources, respectively. We crossmatch the RRL detections with the 6.7 methanol maser sources built up in previous works for the same target sample. As a result, 103 HMSFR sources were found to harbor both emissions. In this paper, we present the HMSFR catalog accompanied by the measured RRL line properties and a correlation with our methanol maser sample, which is believed to trace massive stars at earlier stages. The construction of an HMSFR sample consisting of sources in various evolutionary stages indicated by different tracers is fundamental for future studies of high-mass star formation in such regions.

- A 5-GHz VLA Survey of the Galactic Plane
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/91/347
- Date:

- Description:
- We have used the VLA to survey the inner Galaxy (|b|<0.4{deg}, l=350-40{deg}) at 5GHz to a limiting sensitivity of between 2.5 and 10mJy. The survey has resulted in a catalog of 1272 discrete sources (including 100 sources outside the formal survey area) of which we have tentatively identified ~450 as ultracompact H II regions and ~45 as planetary nebulae. Approximately 30% of the radio sources are detected in the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The results confirm a scale height of only 30pc for ultracompact H II regions. We show that source lists generated from the IRAS Point Source Catalog alone suffer serious effects; the combination of the IRAS and radio surveys allows us to produce a much more complete census of the regions of massive star formation in our Galaxy.

- AGN candidates from 2MASS/ROSAT catalogs
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/405/2062
- Date:

- CDS
- Description:
- We report on the near-infrared-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates extracted from Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS)/ROSAT catalogues and discuss their properties. First, near-infrared counterparts of an X-ray source in ROSAT catalogues [namely bright source catalogue (BSC, Cat. IX/10) and faint source catalogue (FSC, Cat. IX/29)] were extracted by positional cross-identification of <=30arcsec. As these counterparts would contain many mis-identifications, we further imposed near-infrared colour selection criteria and extracted reliable AGN candidates (BSC: 5273, FSC: 10071). Of the 5273 (10071) candidates in the BSC (FSC), 2053 (1008) are known AGNs. Near-infrared and X-ray properties of candidates show similar properties with known AGNs and are consistent with the previous studies. We also searched for counterparts in other wavelengths (i.e. optical, near-infrared and radio) and investigated properties in multiwavelength. No significant difference between known AGNs and unclassified sources could be seen. However, some unclassified sources in the FSC showed slightly different properties compared with known AGNs. Consequently, it is highly probable that we could extract reliable AGN candidates, though candidates in the FSC might be spurious.

- AGN-driven winds through IR emission. II.

- Description:
- The global influence of AGN-driven outflows remains uncertain, due to a lack of large samples with accurately-determined outflow properties. In the second paper of this series, we determine the mass and energetics of ionized outflows is 234 type II AGN, the largest such sample to date, by combining the infrared emission of the dust in the wind (Paper I, Baron & Netzer, 2019MNRAS.482.3915B) with the emission line properties. We provide new general expressions for the properties of the outflowing gas, which depend on the ionization state of the gas. We also present a novel method to estimate the electron density in the outflow, based on optical line ratios and on the known location of the wind. The inferred electron densities, n_e_~10^4.5^cm^^-3^, are two orders of magnitude larger than typically assumed in most other cases of ionized outflows. We argue that the discrepancy is due to the fact that the commonly-used [SII]-based method underestimates the true density by a large factor. As a result, the inferred mass outflow rates and kinetic coupling efficiencies are dM/dt_out_~10^-2^(dM_{sun}_/yr) and epsilon=dE/dt_kin_/L_bol_~10^-5^ respectively, 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than previous estimates. Our analysis suggests the existence of a significant amount of neutral atomic gas at the back of the outflowing ionized gas clouds, with mass that is a factor of a few larger than the observed ionized gas mass. This has significant implications for the estimated mass and energetics of such flows.

- AGN global star-forming properties

- Description:
- We combine the HerschelSpace Observatory PACS (Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer) and SPIRE (Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver) photometry with archival WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) photometry to construct the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for over 300 local (z<0.05), ultrahard X-ray (14-195keV) selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 58-month catalogue. Using a simple analytical model that combines an exponentially cutoff power law with a single temperature modified blackbody, we decompose the SEDs into a host galaxy and AGN component. We calculate dust masses, dust temperatures, and star formation rates (SFRs) for our entire sample and compare them to a stellar mass-matched sample of local non-AGN galaxies. We find AGN host galaxies have systematically higher dust masses, dust temperatures, and SFRs due to the higher prevalence of late-type galaxies to host an AGN, in agreement with previous studies of the Swift/BAT AGN. We provide a scaling to convert X-ray luminosities into 8-1000{mu}m AGN luminosities, as well as determine the best mid-to-far IR colours for identifying AGN-dominated galaxies in the IR regime. We find that for nearly 30 per cent of our sample, the 70{mu}m emission contains a significant contribution from the AGN (>0.5), especially at higher luminosities (L_14-195keV_>10^42.5^erg/s). Finally, we measure the local SFR-AGN luminosity relationship, finding a slope of 0.18, large scatter (0.37 dex), and no evidence for an upturn at high AGN luminosity. We conclude with a discussion on the implications of our results within the context of galaxy evolution with and without AGN

- Description:
- Using Spitzer-infrared spectrograph (IRS) spectroscopy, we investigate the ubiquity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in a complete (~94%), volume-limited sample of the most bolometrically luminous galaxies [L_IR,8-1000um_>=(0.3-20)x10^10^L_{sun}_] to D<15Mpc. Our analyses are based on the detection of the high-excitation emission line [NeV]({lambda}14.32{mu}m) (97.1eV) to unambiguously identify AGN activity. We find that 17 of the 64 infrared (IR) bright galaxies in our sample host AGN activity (~27^+8^_6_%), >=50t of which are not identified as AGN using optical spectroscopy.

- Description:
- The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then, sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio, IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as briefly reviewed in this paper. The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high-energy neutrino detector during the year 2000. No significant excess for any of the suggested groups was found.

- Description:
- We investigate the nature of a sample of 92 Spitzer MIPS 24{mu}m- selected galaxies in the CDF-S, showing power-law-like emission in the Spitzer IRAC 3.6-8{mu}m bands. The main goal is to determine whether the galaxies not detected in X-rays (47% of the sample) are part of the hypothetical population of obscured AGNs not detected even in deep X-ray surveys.
