- We present measurements of Galactic interstellar AlIII, SiIV, and CIV absorption recorded in high-resolution archival ultraviolet spectra of 164 hot early-type stars observed by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The objects studied were drawn from the list of hot stars scheduled to be observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite as part of observing programs designed to investigate absorption by OVI in the Galactic disk and halo. Multiple IUE echelle-mode integrations have been combined to produce a single ultraviolet (1150-1900{AA}) spectrum of each star with a spectral resolution of ~25km/s (FWHM). Selected absorption-line profiles are presented for each star along with plots of the apparent column density per unit velocity for each line of the AlIII, SiIV, and CIV doublets. We report absorption-line equivalent widths, absorption velocities, and integrated column densities based on the apparent optical depth method of examining interstellar absorption lines. We also determine column densities and Doppler parameters from single-component curve-of-growth analyses. The scientific analysis of these observations will be undertaken after the FUSE satellite produces similar measurements for absorption by interstellar OIV, FeIII, SIII, and other ions.

- The so-called lithium depletion boundary (LDB) provides a secure and independent tool for deriving the ages of young open clusters. In this context, our goal is to determine membership for a sample of 147 photometrically selected candidates of the young open cluster IC 4665 and to use confirmed members to establish an age based on the LDB. Employing the FLAMES multi-object spectrograph on VLT/UT2, we have obtained intermediate-resolution spectra of the cluster candidates. The spectra were used to measure radial velocities and to infer the presence of the LiI 670.8nm doublet and H{alpha} emission.

- We have used the Two Micron All Sky Survey and Palomar Observatory Sky Survey photographic plates, digitized by the US Naval Observatory's Precision Measuring Machine program, to derive proper motions over a 100 square degree, spatially complete region centered on the Praesepe open cluster. Proper-motion measurements spanned the magnitude range R~12-19, which covers most of the lower main sequence in Praesepe. The incidence of H{alpha} emission from moderate-resolution (~2600), red spectroscopy of 434 faint candidate members and 126 field control stars demonstrates that ~60%-80% of candidates within 2{deg} of the cluster center are genuine Praesepe members.

- We present the photometric determination of the bright-end of the Ly{alpha} luminosity function (at L_Ly{alpha}_>~10^43.5^erg/s) within four redshifts windows ({Delta}z<0.16) in the interval 2.2<~z<~3.3. Our work is based on the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data-release, which provides multiple narrow-band measurements over ~1000deg^2^, with limiting magnitude ~22. Theanalysis of high-z Ly{alpha}-emitting sources over such a wide area is unprecedented, and allows to select a total of ~14500 hyper-bright(L_Ly{alpha}_>10^43.3^erg/s) Ly{alpha}-emitting candidates. We test our selection with two spectroscopic follow-up programs at the GTC telescope,which confirm as line-emitting sources ~89% of the targets, with ~64% being genuine z~2.2 QSOs. We extend the 2.2<~z<~3.3 Ly{alpha} luminosity function for the first time above L_Ly{alpha}_~10^44^erg/s and down to densities of ~10^-8^Mpc^-3^. Our results unveil with high detail the Schechter exponential-decay of the brightest-end of the Ly{alpha} LF, complementing the power-law component of previous LF determinations at 43.3<~Log10(L_Ly{alpha}_/(erg/s))<~44. We measure {PHI}*=(3.33+/-0.19)x10^-6^, Log(L*)=44.65+/-0.65 and {alpha}=-1.35+/-0.84 as an average over the redshifts we probe. These values are significantly different than the typical Schechter parameters measured for the Ly{alpha} LF of high-z star-forming LAEs. This suggests that z>2 AGN/QSOs (likely dominant in our samples) are described by a structurally different LF than z>2 star-forming LAEs, namely with L*_QSOs_~100 L*_LAEs_ and {PHI}*_QSOs_~10^-3^{PHI}*_LAEs_. Finally, our method identifies very efficiently as high-z line-emitters sources without previous spectroscopic confirmation, currently classified as stars (~2000 objects in each redshift bin, on average). Assuming a large predominance of Ly{alpha}-emitting AGN/QSOs in our samples, this supports the scenario by which these are the most abundant class of z>~2 Ly{alpha} emitters at L_Ly{alpha}_>~10^43.3^erg/s.

- This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS 1Jy sample (f_60_>1Jy) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: L_IR_>10^12^L_{sun}; H_0_=75km/s/Mpc and q_0_=0). One hundred eight of the 118 1Jy ULIGs have been observed at {Delta}{lambda}=8.3{AA} resolution over the wavelength range ~4500-8900{AA}. These data are combined with large, previously published sets of optical spectroscopic data of lower luminosity infrared galaxies to look for systematic trends with infrared luminosity over the luminosity range L_IR_~10^10.5^-10^13^L_{sun}_.

- The Kapteyn moving group has been postulated as tidal debris from {omega} Centauri. If true, members of the group should show some of the chemical abundance patterns known for stars in the cluster. We present an optical and near-infrared high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopic study of 14 stars of the Kapteyn group, plus 10 additional stars (the {omega} Cen group) that, while not listed as members of the Kapteyn group as originally defined, have nevertheless been associated dynamically with {omega} Centauri. Abundances for Na, O, Mg, Al, Ca, and Ba were derived from the optical spectra, while the strength of the chromospheric HeI10830{AA} line is studied as a possible helium abundance indicator. The resulting Na-O and Mg-Al patterns for stars of the combined Kapteyn and {omega} Cen group samples do not resemble those of {omega} Centauri, and are not different from those of field stars of the Galactic halo. The distribution of equivalent widths of the HeI10830{AA} line is consistent with that found among non-active field stars. Therefore, no evidence is found for second-generation stars within our samples, which most likely rules out a globular-cluster origin. Moreover, no hint of the unique barium overabundance at the metal-rich end, well established for {omega} Centauri stars, is seen among stars of the combined samples. Because this specific Ba pattern is present in {omega} Centauri irrespective of stellar generation, this would rule out the possibility that our entire sample might be composed of only first-generation stars from the cluster. Finally, for the stars of the Kapteyn group, the possibility of an origin in the hypothetical parent galaxy of {omega} Centauri is disfavored by the different run of {alpha}-elements with metallicity between our targets and stars from present-day dwarf galaxies.

- We present UFTI K-band imaging observations of 222 galaxies that are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have unusually strong H{delta} absorption equivalent widths, W(H{delta})>4{AA}. Using GIM2D, the images are fitted with two-dimensional surface-brightness models consisting of a simple disc and bulge component to derive the fraction of luminosity in the bulge B/T.

- We present K-band spectra for 133 nearby (d < 33 pc) M dwarfs, including 18 M dwarfs with reliable metallicity estimates (as inferred from an FGK type companion), 11 M dwarf planet hosts, more than 2/3 of the M dwarfs in the northern 8 pc sample, and several M dwarfs from the LSPM catalog. From these spectra, we measure equivalent widths of the Ca and Na lines, and a spectral index quantifying the absorption due to H_2_O opacity (the H_2_O-K2 index). Using empirical spectral type standards and synthetic models, we calibrate the H_2_O-K2 index as an indicator of an M dwarf's spectral type and effective temperature. We also present a revised relationship that estimates the [Fe/H] and [M/H] metallicities of M dwarfs from their Na I, Ca I, and H_2_O-K2 measurements. Comparisons to model atmosphere provide a qualitative validation of our approach, but also reveal an overall offset between the atomic line strengths predicted by models as compared to actual observations. Our metallicity estimates also reproduce expected correlations with Galactic space motions and H{alpha} emission line strengths, and return statistically identical metallicities for M dwarfs within a common multiple system. Finally, we find systematic residuals between our H_2_O-based spectral types and those derived from optical spectral features with previously known sensitivity to stellar metallicity, such as TiO, and identify the CaH1 index as a promising optical index for diagnosing the metallicities of near-solar M dwarfs.

- We report results from a pilot program to obtain spectroscopy for objects detected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Medium Imaging Survey (MIS). Our study examines the properties of galaxies detected by GALEX fainter than the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic survey. This is the first study to extend the techniques of Salim and coworkers to estimate stellar masses, star formation rates (SFRs), and the b (star formation history) parameter for star-forming galaxies out to z~0.7. We obtain redshifts for 50 GALEX MIS sources reaching NUV=23.9 (AB mag) having counterparts in the SDSS Data Release 4 (DR4). Of our sample, 43 are star-forming galaxies with z<0.7, 3 have emission-line ratios indicative of active galactic nuclei with z<0.7, and 4 objects with z>1 are QSOs, 3 of which are not previously cataloged. We compare our sample to a much larger sample of ~50000 matched GALEX/SDSS galaxies with SDSS spectroscopy; while our survey is shallow, the optical counterparts to our sources reach ~3mag fainter in SDSS r than the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We use emission-line diagnostics for the galaxies to determine that the sample contains mostly star-forming galaxies.
