- As part of the search for planets around evolved stars, we can understand planet populations around significantly higher-mass stars than the Sun on the main sequence. This population is difficult to study any other way, particularly with radial-velocities since these stars are too hot and rotate too fast to measure precise velocities. Here we estimate stellar parameters for all of the giant stars from the EXPRESS project, which aims to detect planets orbiting evolved stars, and study their occurrence rate as a function of stellar mass. We analyse high resolution echelle spectra of these stars, and compute the atmospheric parameters by measuring the equivalent widths for a set of iron lines, using an updated method implemented during this work. Physical parameters are computed by interpolating through a grid of stellar evolutionary models, following a procedure that carefully takes into account the post-MS evolutionary phases. Probabilities of the star being in the red giant branch (RBG) or the horizontal branch (HB) are estimated from the derived distributions. Results: We find that, out of 166 evolved stars, 101 of them are most likely in the RGB phase, while 65 of them are in the HB phase. The mean derived mass is 1.41 and 1.87M_{sun}_ for RGB and HB stars, respectively. To validate our method, we compared our results with interferometry and asteroseismology studies. We find a difference in the radius with interferometry of 1.7%. With asteroseismology, we find 2.4% difference in logg, 1.5% in radius, 6.2% in mass, and 11.9% in age. Compared with previous spectroscopic studies, and find a 0.5% difference in Teff, 1% in logg, and 2% in [Fe/H]. We also find a mean mass difference with respect to the EXPRESS original catalogue of 16%. We show that the method presented here can greatly improve the estimates of the stellar parameters for giant stars compared to what was presented previously.

- The 15467 southern galaxies in this catalog were scanned from 407 blue and 407 red original ESO-Schmidt plates using a PDS microdensitometer. The galaxies were selected from the ESO-Uppsala Catalogue (VII/34). The original selection criterion was a minimum visual angular diameter of 1arcmin. The plates were calibrated using a catalog of photo- electric standards of 1700 standard galaxies transformed to a photometric standard system (Cousins) created by the authors. The result is a catalog acquired in a homogeneous fashion for all types of galaxies in various environments. The extracted parameters include radial surface brightness profiles, magnitudes at several isophotal levels, colors, color gradients, effective radius parameters, structural parameters such as axial ratios, position angles, and profile gradients. The full version of the catalog, made of 190 columns, is available as the file "esolv.fit" in FITS table format. The ascii file "esolv1.dat" contains a subset of these columns which includes those parameters listed in the printed book version. - This is CMC12 (Version 1.0), an astrometric and photometric catalogue of 6.3 million stars in the red magnitude range 9 to 17. The Carlsberg Meridian Telescope (CMT) underwent a major upgrade in March 1999. A 2k by 2k CCD camera was installed with a Sloan r' filter operating in a drift scan mode. With the new system, the magnitude limit is r'_CMT_=17 and the positional accuracy is about 0.035". The main task of the CMT is to map the sky in the declination range -3{deg} to +30{deg} with the aim of providing an astrometric, and photometric, catalogue that can accurately transfer the Hipparcos/Tycho reference frame to Schmidt plates. The current release (Version 1.0) comprises all the observations made between March 1999 and March 2002 with the new CCD in the declination band -3{deg} to +3{deg}. It is intended to release the rest of the catalogue later. - The epoch International Celestial Reference Frame (epoch ICRF) is proposed as a new concept in order to consider the effect of apparent proper motion of the position of a radio source due to acceleration of the spatial origin of the ICRF, the centre of mass of the Solar system. This apparent proper motion has a magnitude of approximately 5.8-microarcsec ({mu}as) per year, and for the 30-year very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observational history these position variations will exceed 100{mu}as. We show that the dipole structure of the apparent proper motions leads to global rotation in the ICRF2 and the main term, the shift of direction of the origin of right ascension, reaches 25{mu}as per century. The 'epoch ICRF' is constructed using epoch positions at J2000.0 and apparent proper motions of radio sources, which are reported here for 295 ICRF2-defining sources.

- The FK5 catalog was expanded from 1535 stars to include an additional 3117 stars which comprise the 'extension' to the new 'Basic' FK5, the revision of the FK4. For the basic FK5 a method of converting from the FK5 system to the FK4 system is provided in the catalog while for the Extension no algorithm was supplied. This catalog consists of two files. One file is the FK5 Extension placed at B1950.0 on the FK4 system. The second file is the FK5 Extension placed at the mean Epoch of place on the FK4 system.

- The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues are the primary products of the European Space Agency's astrometric mission, Hipparcos. The satellite, which operated for four years, returned high quality scientific data from November 1989 to March 1993. Each of the catalogues contains a large quantity of very high quality astrometric and photometric data. In addition there are associated annexes featuring variability and double/multiple star data, and solar system astrometric and photometric measurements. In the case of the Hipparcos Catalogue, the principal parts are provided in both printed and machine-readable form (on CDROM). In the case of the Tycho Catalogue, results are provided in machine-readable form only (on CDROM). Although in general only the final reduced and calibrated astrometric and photometric data are provided, some auxiliary files containing results from intermediate stages of the data processing, of relevance for the more-specialised user, have also been retained for publication. (Some, but not all, data files are available from the Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg.) The global data analysis tasks, proceeding from nearly 1000 Gbit of raw satellite data to the final catalogues, was a lengthy and complex process, and was undertaken by the NDAC and FAST Consortia, together responsible for the production of the Hipparcos Catalogue, and the Tycho Consortium, responsible for the production of the Tycho Catalogue. A fourth scientific consortium, the INCA Consortium, was responsible for the construction of the Hipparcos observing programme, compiling the best-available data for the selected stars before launch into the Hipparcos Input Catalogue. The production of the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues marks the formal end of the involvement in the mission by the European Space Agency and the four scientific consortia. For more complete and detailed information on the data, the user is advised to refer to Volume 1 ("Introduction and Guide to the Data", ESA SP-1200) of the printed Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues. The user should also note that in order to convert the Double and Multiple Systems (Component solutions) data file hip_dm_c.dat into FITS format it is first necessary to filter the file according to whether the entry is a component record (identified by COMP in field DCM5) or a correlation record (identified by CORR in field DCM5) because of the different structures of the respective records. On a Unix system this can be achieved as follows: grep COMP hip_dm_c.dat > h_dm_com.dat grep CORR hip_dm_c.dat > h_dm_cor.dat The catalogue description file (this file) gives the relevant information for converting the main data files, including h_dm_cor.dat and h_dm_com.dat, into FITS format. The machine readable data files (i.e. those available on CD-ROM and the subset available from the CDS) contain several extra fields in addition to the data from the printed catalogue. These fields are identified by the letter `M' in the data label (e.g. the field DGM1 contains data only available in the machine readable file hip_dm_g.dat).

- We presents accurate absolute positions from a 24 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) search for compact extragalactic sources in an area where the density of known calibrators with precise coordinates is low. The goals were to identify additional sources suitable for use as phase calibrators for galactic sources, determine their precise positions, and produce radio images. In order to achieve these goals, we developed a new software package, PIMA, for determining group delays from wide-band data with much lower detection limit. With the use of PIMA we have detected 327 sources out of 487 targets observed in three 24 hour VLBA experiments. Among the 327 detected objects, 176 are within 10 degrees of the Galactic plane. This VGaPS catalogue of source positions, plots of correlated flux density versus projected baseline length, contour plots, as well as weighted CLEAN images and calibrated visibility data in FITS format, are available on the Web at http://astrogeo.org/vgaps. Approximately one half of objects from the 24GHz catalogue were observed at dual band 8.6GHz and 2.3GHz experiments. Position differences at 24GHz versus 8.6/2.3GHz for all but two objects on average are strictly within reported uncertainties. We found that for two objects with complex structure positions at different frequencies correspond to different components of a source.

- On the basis of the data observed with the Photoelectric Transit Instrument, of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory during the period from 1980 through 1984, the third preliminary catalogue of stars on right ascension observed with the Photoelectric Transit Instrument (PPCP3) have been compiled. The relations between the residuals V and the magnitude M, and the spectral type S of FK4 stars are discussed. There are 411 stars in this catalogue. The mean precisions of {DELTA}alpha's is +/-2.3ms. Finally systematic corrections of PPCP3-FK4 are given.

- The fifth annual catalog of the Tokyo PMC is presented for 3466 stars (Part I and Part II) which were observed at least two times in the 1989 period, that is, from January 1, 1989, to December 31, 1989. The positions of the stars given in the catalog are those at the mean epoch of observations. The coordinates of the catalog are based on the FK5 system, and refer to the equinox and equator of J2000.0. The values of (O-C)s in the catalog are calculated by using the positions given in the source catalog, and by evaluating those at the mean epoch of observations of each star, with the equinox and equator at the mean epoch. The magnitudes of the stars given in the catalog can be transformed into the V-magnitude of the standard UBV system by the equation: V = V(TPMC) + 0.063 ( B-V ) - 0.045. The mean trends of the observed positions-FK5 positions for the basic FK5 stars are constructed and compared with those of the Tokyo PMC Catalogs 86, 87, and 88. The Part I of the catalog contains the positions of 1080 basic FK5 stars, 210 FK4 Suppl. stars, 1700 AGK3R stars, 131 OB stars, 36 NPZT stars, and 96 SAO stars, observed with the Tokyo PMC in the 1989 period based on FK5 system. The Part II of the catalog contains the positions of 210 zodiacal stars observed with the Tokyo PMC in the 1989 period based on the FK5 system. The stars of the Part II are usable for the reduction of lunar occultation. The Parts I and II are concatenated to form a single machine-readable catalog.
