- We present results from spectroscopic observations with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System (M2FS) of 182 stellar targets along the line of sight (LOS) to the newly discovered "ultrafaint" object Reticulum 2 (Ret 2). For 37 of these targets, the spectra are sufficient to provide simultaneous estimates of LOS velocity ({nu}i_los_, median random error {delta}_{nu}los_=1.4km/s), effective temperature (T_eff_, {delta}_Tef_=478K), surface gravity (logg, {delta}_logg_=0.63dex), and iron abundance ([Fe/H], {delta}_[Fe/H]_=0.47dex). We use these results to confirm 17 stars as members of Ret 2. From the member sample we estimate a velocity dispersion of {sigma}_{nu}los_=3.6_-0.7_^+1.0^km/s about a mean of <{nu}_los_>=64.3_1.2_^+1.2^km/s in the solar rest frame (~-90.9km/s in the Galactic rest frame), and a metallicity dispersion of {sigma}_[Fe/H]_=0.49_-0.14_^+0.19^dex about a mean of <[Fe/H]_>=-2.58_-0.33_^+0.34^. These estimates marginalize over possible velocity and metallicity gradients, which are consistent with zero. Our results place Ret 2 on chemodynamical scaling relations followed by the Milky Way's dwarf-galactic satellites. Under assumptions of dynamic equilibrium and negligible contamination from binary stars --both of which must be checked with deeper imaging and repeat spectroscopic observations-- the estimated velocity dispersion suggests a dynamical mass of M(R_h_)~5R_h_{sigma}_{nu}los_^2^/(2G)=2.4_-0.8_^+1.4^x10^5^M_{sun}_ enclosed within projected halflight radius R_h_~32pc, with mass-to-light ratio ~2M(R_h_)/L_V_=467_-168_^+286^ in solar units.

- From a sample of 97 very bright M-giant stars in the Solar neighbourhood, high-quality `intrinsic' spectra in the spectral range [380-900]nm for all M-spectral subclasses of the Case and MK classification systems are obtained. The results are fitted to photospheric synthetic spectra in the range [99-12500]nm in order to infer the corresponding continua. The synthetic spectra are also compared to the intrinsic spectra. The effective temperatures are derived and mathematical spectral classification criteria are found. The (UB)j(VRI)c(JHKLM)eso photometric data of the sample are also given.

- We observe two metal-poor main-sequence stars that are members of the recently discovered Sylgr stellar stream. We present radial velocities, stellar parameters, and abundances for 13 elements derived from high-resolution optical spectra collected using the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph. The two stars have identical compositions (within 0.13 dex or 1.2{sigma}) among all elements detected. Both stars are very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.92+/-0.06). Neither star is highly enhanced in C ([C/Fe]<+1.0). Both stars are enhanced in the {alpha} elements Mg, Si, and Ca ([{alpha}/Fe]=+0.32+/-0.06), and the ratios among Na, Al, and all Fe-group elements are typical for other stars in the halo and ultra-faint and dwarf spheroidal galaxies at this metallicity. Sr is mildly enhanced ([Sr/Fe]=+0.22+/-0.11), but Ba is not enhanced ([Ba/Fe]{<}-0.4), indicating that these stars do not contain high levels of neutron-capture elements. The Li abundances match those found in metal-poor unevolved field stars and globular clusters (GCs) (log{epsilon}(Li)=2.05+/-0.07), which implies that environment is not a dominant factor in determining the Li content of metal-poor stars. The chemical compositions of these two stars cannot distinguish whether the progenitor of the Sylgr stream was a dwarf galaxy or a GC. If the progenitor was a dwarf galaxy, the stream may originate from a dense region such as a nuclear star cluster. If the progenitor was a GC, it would be the most metal-poor GC known.

- In the central few degrees of the bulge of the Milky Way there is a flattened structure of gas, dust, and stars, known as the central molecular zone, that is similar to nuclear disks in other galaxies. As a result of extreme foreground extinction, we possess only sparse information about the (mostly old) stellar population of the nuclear disk. In this work we present our KMOS spectroscopic survey of the stars in the nuclear disk reaching the old populations. To obtain an unbiased data set, we sampled stars in the full extinction range along each line of sight. We also observed reference fields in neighboring regions of the Galactic bulge. We describe the design and execution of the survey and present first results. We obtain spectra and five spectral indices of 3113 stars with a median S/N of 67 and measure radial velocities for 3051 stars. Of those, 2735 sources have sufficient S/N to estimate temperatures and metallicities from indices. We derive metallicities using the CO 2-0 and Na I K-band spectral features, where we derive our own empirical calibration using metallicities obtained with higher-resolution observations.We use 183 giant stars for calibration spanning in metallicity from -2.5 to 0.6dex and covering temperatures of up to 5500K. The derived index based metallicities deviate from the calibration values with a scatter of 0.32dex. The internal uncertainty of our metallicities is likely smaller. We use these metallicity measurements, together with the CO index, to derive effective temperatures using literature relations. We publish the catalog in this paper. Our data set complements Galactic surveys such as Gaia and APOGEE for the inner 200pc radius of the Milky Way, which is not readily accessible by those surveys owing to extinction. We will use the derived properties in future papers for further analysis of the nuclear disk.

- Based on an extensive spectral study of a photometrically confirmed sample of Mira variables, we find a relationship between the relative Balmer emission-line strengths and spectral temperatures of O-rich Mira stars. The F_H{delta}_/F_H{gamma}_ flux ratio increases from less than unity to five as stars cool down from M0 to M10, which is likely driven by increasing TiO absorption above the deepest shock-emitting regions. We also discuss the relationship between the equivalent widths of the Balmer emission lines and the photometric luminosity phase of our Mira sample stars. Using our 291 Mira spectra as templates for reference, 191 Mira candidates are newly identified from the LAMOST DR4 catalog. We summarize the criteria adopted to select Mira candidates based on emission-line indices and molecular absorption bands. This enlarged spectral sample of Mira variables has the potential to contribute significantly to our knowledge of the optical properties of Mira stars and will facilitate further studies of these late-type, long-period variables.

- Future dark energy space missions such as JDEM and EUCLID are being designed to survey the galaxy population to trace the geometry of the universe and the growth of structure, which both depend on the cosmological model. To reach the goal of high precision cosmology they need to evaluate the capabilities of different instrument designs based on realistic mock catalog. The aim of this paper is to construct realistic and flexible mock catalogs based on our knowledge of galaxy population from current deep surveys. We explore two categories of mock catalog : (i) based on luminosity functions fit of observations (GOODS, UDF, COSMOS, VVDS) using the Le Phare software (ii) based on the observed COSMOS galaxy distribution which benefits from all the properties of the data-rich COSMOS survey. For these two catalogs, we have produced simulated number counts in several bands, color diagrams and redshift distribution for validation against real observational data. We also derive some basic requirements to help designing future Dark Energy mission in terms of number of galaxies available for the weak-lensing analysis as a function of the PSF size and depth of the survey. We also compute the spectroscopic success rate for future spectroscopic redshift surveys (i) aiming at measuring BAO in the case of the wide field spectroscopic redshift survey, and (ii) for the photometric redshift calibration survey which is required to achieve weak lensing tomography with great accuracy. - Mid-infrared images of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 obtained with the ISO satellite are presented together with the results of a one-year monitoring campaign of the 2.5-11.7{mu}m spectrum. Contemporaneous optical photometric and spectrophotometric observations are also presented. The galaxy appears as a point-like source at the resolution of the ISOCAM instrument (4-5"). The 2.5-11.7{mu}m average spectrum of the nucleus in Mrk 279 shows a strong power law continuum with {alpha}=-0.80+/-0.05 (F_{nu}_{prop.to}{nu}^{alpha}^) and weak PAH emission features. The Mrk 279 spectral energy distribution shows a mid-IR bump, which extends from 2 to 15-20{mu}m. The mid-IR bump is consistent with thermal emission from dust grains at a distance of >100 light-days. No significant variations of the mid-IR flux have been detected during our observing campaign, consistent with the relatively low amplitude (~10% rms) of the optical variability during the campaign. The time delay for H{beta} line emission in response to the optical continuum variations is {tau}=16.7^+5.3^_-5.6_days, consistent with previous measurements.

- We present r-band photometric monitoring of the two images, A and B, of the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1442+4055 using the Liverpool Telescope (LT). From the LT light curves between 2015 December and 2018 August, we derive at once a time delay of 25.0+/-1.5d (1{sigma} confidence interval; A is leading) and microlensing magnification gradients below 10^-4^mag/d. The delay interval is not expected to be affected by an appreciable microlensing-induced bias, so it can be used to estimate cosmological parameters. This paper also focuses on new Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and LT spectroscopic observations of the lens system. We determine the redshift of two bright galaxies around the doubly imaged quasar using LT spectroscopy, while GTC data lead to low-noise individual spectra of A, B, and the main lensing galaxy, G1. The G1 spectral shape is accurately matched to an early-type galaxy template at z=0.284, and it has potential for further relevant studies. Additionally, the quasar spectra show absorption by metal-rich gas at z~2. This dusty absorber is responsible for an extinction bump at a rest-frame wavelength of 2209+/-2{AA}, which has strengths of ~0.47 and 0.76mag/{mu}m for A and B, respectively. In such an intervening system, the dust-to-gas ratio, gas-phase metallicity indicator [Zn/H], and dust depletion level [Fe/Zn] are relatively high.

- We present a systematic study of the most luminous (MIR [Vega magnitudes] brighter than -14) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies (D<35Mpc). The sample consists of nine events that span peak IR luminosities of M_[4.5],peak_ between -14 and -18.2, show IR colors between 0.2<([3.6]-[4.5])<3.0, and fade on timescales between 55d<t_fade_<480d. The two reddest events (A_V_>12) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several years and have directly detected, massive progenitors in archival imaging. With analyses of extensive, multiwavelength follow-up, we suggest the following possible classifications: five obscured core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), two erupting massive stars, one luminous red nova, and one intermediate-luminosity red transient. We define a control sample of all optically discovered transients recovered in SPIRITS galaxies and satisfying the same selection criteria. The control sample consists of eight CCSNe and one Type Iax SN. We find that 7 of the 13 CCSNe in the SPIRITS sample have lower bounds on their extinction of 2<A_V_<8. We estimate a nominal fraction of CCSNe in nearby galaxies that are missed by optical surveys as high as 38.5_-21.9_^+26.0^% (90% confidence). This study suggests that a significant fraction of CCSNe may be heavily obscured by dust and therefore undercounted in the census of nearby CCSNe from optical searches.

- We present first results from a spectroscopic survey designed to examine the metallicity and kinematics of individual red giant branch stars in the outer halo of the Andromeda spiral galaxy (M31). This study is based on multislit spectroscopy with the Keck II 10m telescope and Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph of the Ca II near-infrared triplet in 99 M31 halo candidates in a field at R=19kpc on the southeast minor axis with brightnesses from 20<I<22.
