- Description:
- KA1858+4850 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy at redshift 0.078 and is among the brightest active galaxies monitored by the Kepler mission. We have carried out a reverberation mapping campaign designed to measure the broad-line region size and estimate the mass of the black hole in this galaxy. We obtained 74 epochs of spectroscopic data using the Kast Spectrograph at the Lick 3 m telescope from 2012 February to November, and obtained complementary V-band images from five other ground-based telescopes. We measured the H{beta} light curve lag with respect to the V-band continuum light curve using both cross-correlation techniques (CCF) and continuum light curve variability modeling with the JAVELIN method and found rest-frame lags of {tau}_CCF_=13.53_-2.32_^+2.03^ days and {tau}_JAVELIN_=13.15_-1.00_^+1.08^ days. The H{beta} rms line profile has a width of {sigma}_line_=770+/-49 km/s. Combining these two results and assuming a virial scale factor of f=5.13, we obtained a virial estimate of M_BH_=8.06_-1.72_^+1.59^x10^6^M_{sun}_ for the mass of the central black hole and an Eddington ratio of L/L_Edd_{approx}0.2. We also obtained consistent but slightly shorter emission-line lags with respect to the Kepler light curve. Thanks to the Kepler mission, the light curve of KA1858+4850 has among the highest cadences and signal-to-noise ratios ever measured for an active galactic nucleus; thus, our black hole mass measurement will serve as a reference point for relations between black hole mass and continuum variability characteristics in active galactic nuclei.

- Description:
- We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of four W-UMa binaries J015829.5+260333 (hereinafter as J0158), J030505.1+293443 (hereinafter as J0305), J102211.7+310022 (hereinafter as J1022), and KW-Psc. The VRcIc band photometric observations are carried out with the 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT). For low-resolution spectroscopy, we used the 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) as well as the archival data from the 4m LAMOST survey. The systems J0158 and J0305 show a period increase rate of 5.26({+/-}1.72)x10^-7^days/yr and 1.78({+/-}1.52)x10^-6^days/yr, respectively. The period of J1022 is found to be decreasing with a rate of 4.22({+/-}1.67)x10^-6^days/yr. The period analysis of KW-Psc displays no change in its period. The PHOEBE package is used for the light-curve modeling and basic parameters are evaluated with the help of the GAIA parallax. The asymmetry of light curves is explained with the assumption of cool spots at specific positions on one of the components of the system. On the basis of temperatures, mass ratios, fill-out factors, and periods, the system J1022 is identified as a W-subtype system while the others show some mixed properties. To probe the chromospheric activities in these W-UMa binaries, their spectra are compared with the known inactive stars' spectra. The comparison shows emission in H{alpha}, H{beta}, and CaII. To understand the evolutionary status of these systems, the components are plotted in mass-radius and mass-luminosity planes with other well characterized binary systems. The secondary components of all the systems are away from ZAMS, which indicates that the secondary is more evolved than the primary component.

- Photometry & spectroscopy of EE Cep: 2014-15

- Description:
- EE Cep is one of few eclipsing binary systems with a dark, dusty disk around an invisible object similar to epsilon Aur. The system is characterized by grey and asymmetric eclipses every 5.6yr, with a significant variation in their photometric depth, ranging from ~0.5mag to ~2.0mag. The main aim of the observational campaign of the EE Cep eclipse in 2014 was to test the model of disk precession (Galan et al. 2012). We expected that this eclipse would be one of the deepest with a depth of ~2m.mag. We collected multicolor observations from almost 30 instruments located in Europe and North America. This photometric data covers 243 nights during and around the eclipse. We also analyse the low- and high- resolution spectra from several instruments. The eclipse was shallow with a depth of 0m.71 in V-band. The multicolor photometry illustrates small color changes during the eclipse with a total amplitude of order ~+0.15mag in B-I color index. The linear ephemeris for this system is updated by including new times of minima, measured from the three most recent eclipses at epochs E=9, 10 and 11. New spectroscopic observations were acquired, covering orbital phases around the eclipse, which were not observed in the past and increased the data sample, filling some gaps and giving a better insight into the evolution of the H{alpha} and NaI spectral line profiles during the primary eclipse. The eclipse of EE Cep in 2014 was shallower than expected 0.71mag instead of ~2.0mag. This means that our model of disk precession needs revision.

- Description:
- We present an analysis of the integrated properties of the stellar populations in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey of H{alpha}-selected galaxies. In this paper, the first of a series, we describe in detail the techniques developed to model star-forming galaxies using a mixture of stellar populations, and taking into account the observational uncertainties. We assume a recent burst of star formation superimposed on a more evolved population. The effects of the nebular continuum, line emission and dust attenuation are taken into account. We also test different model assumptions, including the choice of specific evolutionary synthesis model, initial mass function, star formation scenario and the treatment of dust extinction. Quantitative tests are applied to determine how well these models fit our multiwavelength observations for the UCM sample. Our observations span the optical and near-infrared, including both photometric and spectroscopic data. Our results indicate that extinction plays a key role in this kind of study, revealing that low- and high-obscured objects may require very different extinction laws and must be treated differently. We also demonstrate that the UCM Survey galaxies are best described by a short burst of star formation occurring within a quiescent galaxy, rather than by continuous star formation. A detailed discussion on the inferred parameters, such as the age, burst strength, metallicity, star formation rate, extinction and total stellar mass for individual objects, is presented in Paper II of this series.

- Description:
- We report long-slit spectroscopy of the early major merger galaxies NGC 3395/NGC 3396. The spectra are consistent with those for star-forming galaxies, but there is some indication of LINER-like active galactic nucleus activity in the center of NGC 3396. The total star formation rate in the regions observed is 2.83 M_{sun}_/yr, consistent with estimates for the entire galaxies. The highest abundances are in the centers of the galaxies, with the abundances decreasing with distance. There is a correlation between high abundance and high ionization parameter, both of which can be attributed to the presence of massive stars. Modeling with SB 99 indicates the star-forming regions are younger than 10 Myr. There are 1000-2000 WNL stars in the system, along with several thousand O stars, consistent with the ages of the star-forming regions. The highest electron densities are found in young regions with high star formation rates. The electron temperatures are higher than results for non-interacting galaxies, which is probably due to shock waves produced by the galaxy-galaxy interaction, the outflow of gas from massive stars, and/or collisions between gas clouds in the galaxies. There is star formation in the bridge of material between the galaxies. These regions are among the youngest in the system and have low abundances, suggesting the gas was pulled from the outer parts of the galaxies. X-ray point sources, probably high-mass X-ray binaries, are associated with several star-forming regions.

- PMS stars in the Cepheus flare region
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We present results of optical spectroscopic and BVR_C_I_C_ photometric observations of 77 pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Cepheus flare region. A total of 64 of these are newly confirmed PMS stars, originally selected from various published candidate lists. We estimate effective temperatures and luminosities for the PMS stars, and comparing the results with PMS evolutionary models, we estimate stellar masses of 0.2-2.4M_{sun}_ and stellar ages of 0.1-15Myr. Among the PMS stars, we identify 15 visual binaries with separations of 2-10". From archival IRAS, Two Micron All Sky Survey, and Spitzer data, we construct their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and classify 5% of the stars as Class I, 10% as Flat SED, 60% as Class II, and 3% as Class III young stellar objects. We identify 12 classical T Tauri stars and two weak-line T Tauri stars as members of NGC 7023, with a mean age of 1.6Myr. The 13 PMS stars associated with L1228 belong to three small aggregates: RNO 129, L1228A, and L1228S. The age distribution of the 17 PMS stars associated with L1251 suggests that star formation has propagated with the expansion of the Cepheus flare shell. We detect sparse aggregates of ~6-7Myr old PMS stars around the dark clouds L1177 and L1219, at a distance of ~400pc. Three T Tauri stars appear to be associated with the Herbig Ae star SV Cep at a distance of 600pc. Our results confirm that the molecular complex in the Cepheus flare region contains clouds of various distances and star-forming histories.

- Post-AGB/RGB and YSOs in SMC
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/439/2211
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have carried out a search for optically visible post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) candidates in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). First, we used mid-IR observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope to select optically visible candidates with excess mid-IR flux and then we obtained low-resolution optical spectra for 801 of the candidates. After removing poor-quality spectra and contaminants, such as M-stars, C-stars, planetary nebulae, quasi-stellar objects and background galaxies, we ended up with a final sample of 63 high-probability post-AGB/RGB candidates of A-F spectral type. From the spectral observations, we estimated the stellar parameters: effective temperature (T_eff_), surface gravity (logg) and metallicity ([Fe/H]). We also estimated the reddening and deduced the luminosity using the stellar parameters combined with photometry. For the post-AGB/RGB candidates, we found that the metallicity distribution peaks at [Fe/H]~-1.00dex. Based on a luminosity criterion, 42 of these 63 sources were classified as post-red giant branch (post-RGB) candidates and the remaining 21 as post-AGB candidates. From the spectral energy distributions, we were able to infer that 6 of the 63 post-AGB/RGB candidates have a surrounding circumstellar shell suggesting that they are single stars, while 27 of the post-AGB/RGB candidates have a surrounding disc, suggesting that they lie in binary systems. For the remaining 30 post-AGB/RGB candidates the nature of the circumstellar environment was unclear. Variability is displayed by 38 of the 63 post-AGB/RGB candidates with the most common variability types being the Population II Cepheids (including RV-Tauri stars) and semiregular variables. This study has also revealed a new RV Tauri star in the SMC, J005107.19-734133.3, which shows signs of s-process enrichment. From the numbers of post-AGB/RGB stars in the SMC, we were able to estimate evolutionary rates. We find that the number of post-AGB and post-RGB candidates that we have identified are in good agreement with the stellar evolution models with some mass-loss in the post-AGB phase and a small amount of re-accretion in the lower luminosity post-RGB phase. This study also resulted in a new sample of 40 young stellar objects (YSOs) of A-F spectral type. The 40 YSO candidates for which we could estimate stellar parameters are luminous and of high mass (~3-10M_{sun}_). They lie on the cool side of the usually adopted birthline in the HR-diagram. This line separates visually obscured protostars from optically visible pre-main-sequence stars, meaning that our YSO candidates have become optically visible in the region of the HR diagram usually reserved for obscured protostars. Additionally, we also identified a group of 63 objects whose spectra are dominated by emission lines and in some cases, a significant UV continuum. These objects are very likely to be either hot post-AGB/RGB candidates or luminous YSOs.

- Properties of N2K stars & new gas giant companions
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/156/213
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The N2K planet search program was designed to exploit the planet-metallicity correlation by searching for gas giant planets orbiting metal-rich stars. Here, we present the radial velocity measurements for 378 N2K target stars that were observed with the HIRES spectrograph at Keck Observatory between 2004 and 2017. With this data set, we announce the discovery of six new gas giant exoplanets: a double-planet system orbiting HD 148164 (Msini of 1.23 and 5.16 M_JUP_) and single planet detections around HD 55696 (Msini=3.87 M_JUP_), HD 98736 (Msini=2.33 M_JUP_), HD 203473 (Msini=7.8 M_JUP_), and HD 211810 (Msini=0.67 M_JUP_). These gas giant companions have orbital semimajor axes between 1.0 and 6.2 au and eccentricities ranging from 0.13 to 0.71. We also report evidence for three gravitationally bound companions with Msini between 20 and 30 M_JUP_, placing them in the mass range of brown dwarfs, around HD 148284, HD 214823, and HD 217850, and four low-mass stellar companions orbiting HD 3404, HD 24505, HD 98630, and HD 103459. In addition, we present updated orbital parameters for 42 previously announced planets. We also report a nondetection of the putative companion HD 73256 b. Finally, we highlight the most promising candidates for direct imaging and astrometric detection, and we find that many hot Jupiters from our sample could be detectable by state-of-the-art telescopes such as Gaia.

- Properties of yellow supergiant stars in the SMC
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/155/207
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We recently discovered a yellow supergiant (YSG) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a heliocentric radial velocity of ~300 km/s, which is much larger than expected for a star at its location in the SMC. This is the first runaway YSG ever discovered and only the second evolved runaway star discovered in a galaxy other than the Milky Way. We classify the star as G5-8 I and use de-reddened broad-band colors with model atmospheres to determine an effective temperature of 4700+/-250 K, consistent with what is expected from its spectral type. The star's luminosity is then log L/L_{sun}_~4.2~0.1, consistent with it being a ~30 Myr 9 M_{sun}_ star according to the Geneva evolution models. The star is currently located in the outer portion of the SMC's body, but if the star's transverse peculiar velocity is similar to its peculiar radial velocity, in 10 Myr the star would have moved 1.6{deg} across the disk of the SMC and could easily have been born in one of the SMC's star-forming regions. Based on its large radial velocity, we suggest it originated in a binary system where the primary exploded as a supernovae, thus flinging the runaway star out into space. Such stars may provide an important mechanism for the dispersal of heavier elements in galaxies given the large percentage of massive stars that are runaways. In the future, we hope to look into additional evolved runaway stars that were discovered as part of our other past surveys.

- 17 PS1 superluminous SNe LCs + classif. spectra
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/852/81
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present light curves and classification spectra of 17 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS). Our sample contains all objects from the PS1 MDS sample with spectroscopic classification that are similar to either of the prototypes SN 2005ap or SN 2007bi, without an explicit limit on luminosity. With a redshift range 0.3<z<1.6, PS1 MDS is the first SLSN sample primarily probing the high-redshift population; our multifilter PS1 light curves probe the rest- frame UV emission, and hence the peak of the spectral energy distribution. We measure the temperature evolution and construct bolometric light curves, and find peak luminosities of (0.5-5)x10^44^erg/s and lower limits on the total radiated energies of (0.3-2)x10^51^erg. The light curve shapes are diverse, with both rise and decline times spanning a factor of ~5 and several examples of double-peaked light curves. When correcting for the flux-limited nature of our survey, we find a median peak luminosity at 4000{AA} of M_4000_=-21.1mag and a spread of {sigma}=0.7mag.
