- Description:
- We report the discovery of a radial velocity signal that can be interpreted as a planetary-mass candidate orbiting the K dwarf HD 26965, with an orbital period of 42.364+/-0.015 days, or alternatively, as the presence of residual, uncorrected rotational activity in the data. Observations include data from HIRES, PFS, CHIRON, and HARPS, where 1111 measurements were made over 16 years. Our best solution for HD 26965 b is consistent with a super-Earth that has a minimum mass of 6.92+/-0.79 M_{Earth}_ orbiting at a distance of 0.215+/-0.008 au from its host star. We have analyzed the correlation between spectral activity indicators and the radial velocities from each instrument, showing moderate correlations that we include in our model. From this analysis, we recover a ~38-day signal, which matches some literature values of the stellar rotation period. However, from independent Mt. Wilson HK data for this star, we find evidence for a significant 42-day signal after subtraction of longer period magnetic cycles, casting doubt on the planetary hypothesis for this period. Although our statistical model strongly suggests that the 42-day signal is Doppler in origin, we conclude that the residual effects of stellar rotation are difficult to fully model and remove from this data set, highlighting the difficulties to disentangle small planetary signals and photospheric noise, particularly when the orbital periods are close to the rotation period of the star. This study serves as an excellent test case for future works that aim to detect small planets orbiting "Sun-like" stars using radial velocity measurements.

- Description:
- We present a study on the stellar population and kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) in the peculiar galaxy M85. We obtain optical spectra of 89 GCs at 8kpc<R<160kpc using the MMT/Hectospec. We divide them into three groups, blue/green/red GCs (B/G/RGCs), with their (g-i)0 colors. All GC subpopulations have mean ages of about 10Gyr, but showing differences in metallicities. The BGCs and RGCs are the most metal-poor ([Z/H]~-1.49) and metal-rich ([Z/H]~-0.45), respectively, and the GGCs are in between. We find that the inner GC system exhibits a strong overall rotation that is entirely due to a disklike rotation of the RGC system. The BGC system shows little rotation. The GGCs show kinematic properties clearly distinct among the GC subpopulations, having higher mean velocities than the BGCs and RGCs and being aligned along the major axis of M85. This implies that the GGCs have an origin different from the other GC subpopulations. The rotation-corrected velocity dispersion of the RGC system is much lower than that of the BGC system, indicating the truncation of the red halo of M85. The BGCs have a flat velocity dispersion profile out to R=67kpc, reflecting the dark matter extent of M85. Using the velocity dispersion of the BGC system, we estimate the dynamical mass of M85 to be 3.8x1012M{sun}. We infer that M85 has undergone merging events lately, resulting in the peculiar kinematics of the GC system.

- Description:
- Intense coordinated spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the suspected Wolf-Rayet binary WR 46 in 1999 reveals clear periodic variations, P=0.329+/-0.013 days, in the radial velocities of the emission lines of highest ionization potential, O VI and N V, found deepest in the Wolf-Rayet wind and thus least likely to be perturbed by a companion. These are accompanied by coherent variability in the profiles of lines with lower ionization/excitation potential and in the continuum flux. Most probably originating from orbital motion of the Wolf-Rayet component of the binary, this periodic radial velocity signal disappears from time to time, thus creating a puzzle yet to be solved. We show that the entangled patterns of the line profile variability are mainly governed by transitions between high and low states of the system's continuum flux. Based in part on observations obtained at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile (ESO program 62.H-0110).

- Description:
- The radial velocity (RV) is a basic physical quantity that can be determined through the Doppler shift of the spectrum of a star. The precision of the RV measurement depends on the resolution of the spectrum we used and the accuracy of wavelength calibration. In this work, radial velocities of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope-II (LAMOST-II) medium-resolution (R~7500) spectra are measured for 1,594,956 spectra (each spectrum has two wavebands) through matching with templates. A set of RV standard stars are used to recalibrate the zero point of the measurement, and some reference sets with RVs derived from medium-/high-resolution observations are used to evaluate the accuracy of the measurement. By comparing with reference sets, the accuracy of our measurement can get 0.0277km/s with respect to radial velocities of standard stars. The intrinsic precision is estimated with the multiple observations of single stars, which can be achieved to 1.36km/s, 1.08km/s, and 0.91km/s for the spectra at signal-to-noise levels of 10, 20, and 50, respectively.

- Radio-loud QSOs at z~4

- Description:
- We obtained spectra of 60 red, star-like objects (m_E_<18.8) identified with FIRST radio sources, S_1.4GHz_>1mJy. Eight are quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) with redshift z>3.6. Combined with our earlier pilot search, our sample of 121 candidates yields a total of 18 z>3.6 QSOs (10 of these with z>4.0). 8 per cent of candidates with S_1.4GHz_<10mJy and 37 per cent of candidates with S_1.4GHz_>10mJy are QSOs with z>3.6. The surface density of m_E_<18.8, S_1.4GHz_>1mJy, z>4 QSOs is 0.003deg^-2^. This is currently the only well-defined sample of radio-loud QSOs at z~4 selected independently of radio spectral index. The QSOs are highly luminous in the optical (eight have M_B_<28, q_0_=0.5, H_0_=50km/s/Mpc). The SEDs are as varied as those seen in optical searches for high-redshift QSOs, but the fraction of objects with weak (strongly self-absorbed) Ly emission is marginally higher (3 out of 18) than for high-redshift QSOs from SDSS (5 out of 96).

- Description:
- The Australia Telescope Hubble Deep Field-South (ATHDF-S) survey of the Hubble Deep Field-South (HDF-S) reaches sensitivities of ~10uJy at 1.4, 2.5, 5.2, and 8.7GHz, making the ATHDF-S one of the deepest surveys ever performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Here, we present the optical identifications of the ATHDF-S radio sources using data from the literature. We find that ~66% of the radio sources have optical counterparts to I=23.5mag. Deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of the area identifies a further 12% of radio sources. We present new spectroscopic observations for 98 of the radio sources and supplement these spectroscopic redshifts with photometric ones calculated from five-band optical imaging.

- Red giant stars in clusters. II. M13 and M92
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/137/4282
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- High-resolution spectra of 123 red giant stars in the globular cluster M13 and 64 red giant stars in M92 were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope. Emission and line asymmetries in H{alpha} and CaIIK are identified, characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres and seeking differences attributable to metallicity in these clusters and M15. On the red giant branch, emission in H{alpha} generally appears in stars with T_eff_<~4500K and logL/L_{sun}_>~2.75. Fainter stars showing emission are asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars or perhaps binary stars. The line-bisector for H{alpha} reveals the onset of chromospheric expansion in stars more luminous than log(L/L_{sun}_)~2.5 in all clusters, and this outflow velocity increases with stellar luminosity. However, the coolest giants in the metal-rich M13 show greatly reduced outflow in H{alpha} most probably due to decreased T_eff_ and changing atmospheric structure. The CaIIK_3_ outflow velocities are larger than shown by H{alpha} at the same luminosity and signal accelerating outflows in the chromospheres. Stars clearly on the AGB show faster chromospheric outflows in H{alpha} than RGB objects. While the H{alpha} velocities on the RGB are similar for all metallicities, the AGB stars in the metal-poor M15 and M92 have higher outflow velocities than in the metal-rich M13. Comparison of these chromospheric line profiles in the paired metal-poor clusters, M15 and M92, shows remarkable similarities in the presence of emission and dynamical signatures, and does not reveal a source of the "second-parameter" effect.

- Redshifts of 1151 galaxies from SDSS
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/781/2

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Lines of sight with multiple projected cluster-scale gravitational lenses have high total masses and complex lens plane interactions that can boost the area of magnification, or etendue, making detection of faint background sources more likely than elsewhere. To identify these new "compound" cosmic telescopes, we have found directions in the sky with the highest integrated mass densities, as traced by the projected concentrations of luminous red galaxies (LRGs). We use new galaxy spectroscopy to derive preliminary magnification maps for two such lines of sight with total mass exceeding ~3x10^15^M_{sun}_. From 1151 MMT Hectospec spectra of galaxies down to i_AB_=21.2, we identify two to three group- and cluster-scale halos in each beam. These are well traced by LRGs. The majority of the mass in beam J085007.6+360428 (0850) is contributed by Zwicky 1953, a massive cluster at z=0.3774, whereas beam J130657.5+463219 (1306) is composed of three halos with virial masses of 6x10^14^-2x10^15^M_{sun}_, one of which is A1682. The magnification maps derived from our mass models based on spectroscopy and Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry alone display substantial etendue: the 68% confidence bands on the lens plane area with magnification exceeding 10 for a source plane of z_s_=10 are [1.2,3.8]arcmin^2^ for 0850 and [2.3,6.7]arcmin^2^ for 1306. In deep Subaru Suprime-Cam imaging of beam 0850, we serendipitously discover a candidate multiply imaged V-dropout source at z_phot_=5.03. The location of the candidate multiply imaged arcs is consistent with the critical curves for a source plane of z=5.03 predicted by our mass model. Incorporating the position of the candidate multiply imaged galaxy as a constraint on the critical curve location in 0850 narrows the 68% confidence band on the lens plane area with {mu}>10 and z_s_=10 to [1.8,4.2]arcmin^2^, an etendue range comparable to that of MACS 0717+3745 and El Gordo, two of the most powerful single cluster lenses known. The significant lensing power of our beams makes them powerful probes of reionization and galaxy formation in the early universe.

- Redshifts of obscured AGN
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/618/A66

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Redshifts are fundamental for our understanding of extragalactic X-ray sources. Ambiguous counterpart associations, expensive optical spectroscopy and/or multimission multiwavelength coverage to resolve degeneracies make estimation often difficult in practice. We attempt to constrain redshifts of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) using only low-resolution X-ray spectra. Our XZ method fits AGN X-ray spectra with a moderately complex spectral model incorporating a corona, torus obscurer and warm mirror. Using the Bayesian X-ray Astronomy (BXA) package, we constrain redshift, column density, photon index and luminosity simultaneously. The redshift information primarily comes from absorption edges in Compton-thin AGN, and from the Fe K{alpha} fluorescent line in heavily obscured AGN. A new generic background fitting method allows us to extract more information from limited numbers of source counts. We derive redshift constraints for 74/321 hard-band detected sources in the Chandra deep field South. Comparing with spectroscopic redshifts, we find an outlier fraction of 8%, indicating that our model assumptions are valid. For three Chandra deep fields, we release our XZ redshift estimates. The independent XZ estimate is easy to apply and effective for a large fraction of obscured AGN in todays deep surveys without the need for any additional data. Comparing to different redshift estimation methods, XZ can resolve degeneracies in photometric redshifts, help to detect potential association problems and confirm uncertain single-line spectroscopic redshifts. With high spectral resolution and large collecting area, this technique will be highly effective for Athena/WFI observations.
