- This is the second paper of a series describing the Asiago-ESO/RASS QSO survey, a project aimed at the construction of an all-sky, statistically well defined sample of very bright QSOs (BJ<=15). Such a survey is required to remove the present uncertainties about the properties of the local QSO population and constitutes an homogeneous database for detailed evolutionary studies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We present here the complete southern sample, which comprises 243 bright (12.60<=BJ<=15.13) QSO candidates at high galactic latitudes (|b_gal_|>=30{deg}). The area covered by the survey is 5660deg^2^. Spectroscopy for the 137 still unidentified objects has been obtained. The total number of AGNs turns out to be 11163 of which are new identifications. The properties of the selection are discussed. The completeness and the success rate for this survey at the final stage are 63% and 46%, respectively.

- We studied a sample of 415 associated (z_abs_~z_em_; relative velocity with respect to QSO in units of c, {beta}<0.01) MgII absorption systems with 1.0<=z_abs_<=1.86, in the spectra of SDSS DR3 QSOs, to determine the dust content and ionization state in the absorbers. We also compared these properties to those of a similarly selected sample of 809 intervening systems ({beta}>0.01), so as to understand their origin. Normalized, composite spectra were derived for absorption line measurements, for the full sample and for several subsamples, chosen on the basis of the line strengths and other absorber and QSO properties. From these, and from the equivalent widths in individual spectra, we conclude that the associated MgII absorbers have higher ionization (higher ratios of the strengths of CIV and MgII lines), than the intervening absorbers. The ionization decreases with increasing {beta}. Average extinction curves were obtained for the subsamples by comparing their geometric mean QSO spectra with those of matching (in z_em_ and i magnitude) samples of QSOs without absorption lines. There is clear evidence for SMC-like dust attenuation in these systems; the 2175{AA} absorption feature is absent. The extinction is almost twice that observed in intervening systems. We reconfirm that QSOs with nonzero FIRST radio flux are intrinsically redder than the QSOs with no detection in the FIRST survey.

- Here we explore the efficiency and fidelity of a purely astrometric selection of quasars as point sources with zero proper motions in the Gaia data release 2 (DR2). We have built a complete candidate sample including 104 Gaia-DR2 point sources, which are brighter than 20th magnitude in the Gaia G-band within one degree of the north Galactic pole (NGP); all of them have proper motions that are consistent with zero within 2{sigma} uncertainty. In addition to pre-existing spectra, we have secured long-slit spectroscopy of all the remaining candidates and find that all 104 stationary point sources in the field can be classified as either quasars (63) or stars (41). One of the new quasars that we discover is particularly interesting as the line-of-sight to it passes through the disc of a foreground (z=0.022) galaxy, which imprints both NaD absorption and dust extinction on the quasar spectrum. The selection efficiency of the zero-proper-motion criterion at high Galactic latitudes is thus =~60%. Based on this complete quasar sample, we examine the basic properties of the underlying quasar population within the imposed limiting magnitude. We find that the surface density of quasars is 20deg^-2^ (at G<20mag), the redshift distribution peaks at z~1.5, and only eight systems (13_-3_^+5^%) show significant dust reddening. We then explore the selection efficiency of commonly used optical, near-, and mid-infrared quasar identification techniques and find that they are all complete at the 85-90% level compared to the astrometric selection. Finally, we discuss how the astrometric selection can be improved to an efficiency of =~70% by including an additional cut requiring parallaxes of the candidates to be consistent with zero within 2{sigma}. The selection efficiency will further increase with the release of future, more sensitive astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission. This type of selection, which is purely based on the astrometry of the quasar candidates, is unbiased in terms of colours and intrinsic emission mechanisms of the quasars and thus provides the most complete census of the quasar population within the limiting magnitude of Gaia.

- We present the results of our slitless spectroscopic survey for quasars near 18 known high-redshift quasars (QNQ). The three tables list the survey fields (26.2'x33.5'), the newly confirmed quasars and the remaining unconfirmed quasar candidates, respectively. For each confirmed quasar we give the equatorial coordinates, the redshift measured from the follow-up slit spectra, the redshift uncertainty and the Johnson B magnitude with uncertainty. The redshift uncertainty has been determined from the redshift dispersions of several emission lines. For the remaining candidates we list the equatorial coordinates, the approximate V magnitude, the redshift based on the slitless spectrum and our assessment of the redshift confidence.

- We present the high-angular-resolution catalogue for the Australia Telescope 20GHz (AT20G, Cat. J/MNRAS/402/2403) survey, using the high-angular-resolution 6-km antenna data at the baselines of ~4500m of the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We have used the data to produce the visibility catalogue that separates the compact active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the extended radio sources at the 0.15arcsec angular scale, corresponding to the linear size scale of 1kpc at redshifts higher than 0.7. We find the radio population at 20GHz to be dominated by compact AGNs constituting 77% of the total sources in the AT20G. We introduce the visibility-spectra diagnostic plot, produced using the AT20G cross-matches with lower frequency radio surveys at 1GHz [the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS, Cat. VIII/65) and the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS, Cat. VIII/81)], that separates the 20GHz population into distinct sub-populations of the compact AGNs, the compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources, the extended AGN-powered sources and extended flat-spectrum sources. The extended flat-spectrum sources include a local thermal emitting population of high-latitude planetary nebulae and also gravitational lens and binary black hole candidates among the AGNs. We find a smooth transition in properties between the CSS sources and the AGN populations. The visibility catalogue, together with the main AT20G survey, provides an estimate of angular size scales for sources in the AT20G and an estimate of the flux arising from central cores of extended radio sources. The identification of the compact AGNs in the AT20G survey provides high-quality calibrators for high-frequency radio telescope arrays and very large baseline interferometry observations.

- We present an atlas of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal, non-blazar, quasars over the whole available range (radio to 10 keV X-rays) of the electromagnetic spectrum. The primary (UVSX) sample includes 47 quasars for which the spectral energy distributions include X-ray spectral indices and UV data. Of these, 29 are radio quiet, and 18 are radio loud. The SEDs are presented both in figures and in tabular form, with additional tabular material published on CD-ROM. Previously unpublished observational data for a second set of quasars excluded from the primary sample are also tabulated. The effects of host galaxy starlight contamination and foreground extinction on the UVSX sample are considered and the sample is used to investigate the range of SED properties. Of course, the properties we derive are influenced strongly by the selection effects induced by quasar discovery techniques. We derive the mean energy distribution (MED) for radio-loud and radio-quiet objects and present the bolometric corrections derived from it. We note, however, that the dispersion about this mean is large (~one decade for both the infrared and ultraviolet components when the MED is normalized at the near-infrared inflection). At least part of the dispersion in the ultraviolet may be due to time variability, but this is unlikely to be important in the infrared. The existence of such a large dispersion indicates that the MED reflects only some of the properties of quasars and so should be used only with caution.

- We present results from an analysis of FUSE spectroscopy of the z_em_=0.57 quasar PKS 0405-123. We focus on the intervening metal-line systems identified along the sight line and investigate their ionization mechanism, ionization state, and chemical abundances. Including Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectroscopy, we survey the entire sight line and identify six O VI absorbers to a 3{sigma} equivalent width (EW) limit of 60m{AA}.

- We present a study of quasar selection using the supernova fields of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We used a quasar catalog from an overlapping portion of the SDSS Stripe 82 region to quantify the completeness and efficiency of selection methods involving color, probabilistic modeling, variability, and combinations of color/probabilistic modeling with variability. In all cases, we considered only objects that appear as point sources in the DES images. We examine color selection methods based on the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) (Wright et al. 2010AJ....140.1868W) mid-IR W1-W2 color, a mixture of WISE and DES colors (g-i and i-W1), and a mixture of Vista Hemisphere Survey (McMahon et al. 2013Msngr.154...35M) and DES colors (g-i and i-K). For probabilistic quasar selection, we used XDQSO, an algorithm that employs an empirical multi-wavelength flux model of quasars to assign quasar probabilities. Our variability selection uses the multi-band {chi}^2^-probability that sources are constant in the DES Year 1 griz-band light curves. The completeness and efficiency are calculated relative to an underlying sample of point sources that are detected in the required selection bands and pass our data quality and photometric error cuts. We conduct our analyses at two magnitude limits, i<19.8 mag and i<22 mag. For the subset of sources with W1 and W2 detections, the W1-W2 color or XDQSOz method combined with variability gives the highest completenesses of >85% for both i-band magnitude limits and efficiencies of >80% to the bright limit and >60% to the faint limit; however, the giW1 and giW1+variability methods give the highest quasar surface densities. The XDQSOz method and combinations of W1W2/giW1/XDQSOz with variability are among the better selection methods when both high completeness and high efficiency are desired. We also present the OzDES Quasar Catalog of 1263 spectroscopically confirmed quasars from three years of OzDES observation in the 30 deg^2^ of the DES supernova fields. The catalog includes quasars with redshifts up to z~4 and brighter than i=22 mag, although the catalog is not complete up to this magnitude limit.

- We present a total of 4784 unique broad absorption line quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release (Cat. <VII/243>). An automated algorithm was used to match a continuum to each quasar and to identify regions of flux at least 10% below the continuum over a velocity range of at least 1000km/s in the CIV and MgII absorption regions. The model continuum was selected as the best-fit match from a set of template quasar spectra binned in luminosity, emission line width, and redshift, with the power-law spectral index and amount of dust reddening as additional free parameters. We characterize our sample through the traditional balnicity index and a revised absorption index, as well as through parameters such as the width, outflow velocity, fractional depth, and number of troughs.
