- A CCD photometric study of the dense galactic open cluster M 37 is discussed. The majority of the analysed data have been obtained through an R_C_ filter in order to collect time-series measurements. The observations were carried out on seven nights between December 1999 and February 2000, and have led to the discovery of 7 new variable stars in the field. Three of them have been unambiguously identified as W UMa-type eclipsing binaries, while two more are monoperiodic pulsating stars, most probably high-amplitude {delta} Scuti-type variables. Two stars seem to be long-period eclipsing binaries without firm period determination. The individual light curve data are presented here.

- R Canis Majoris is the prototype of a small group of Algol-type stars showing short orbital periods and low mass ratios. A previous detection of short-term oscillations in its light curve has not yet been confirmed. We investigate a new time series of high-resolution spectra with the aim to derive improved stellar and system parameters, to search for the possible impact of a third component in the observed spectra, to look for indications of activity in the Algol system, and to search for short-term variations in radial velocities. We disentangled the composite spectra into the spectra of the binary components. Then we analysed the resulting high signal-to-noise spectra of both stars. Using a newly developed program code based on an improved method of least-squares deconvolution, we were able to determine the radial velocities of both components also during primary eclipse. This allowed us to develop a better model of the system including the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and to derive improved orbital parameters. Combining the results with those from spectrum analysis, we obtain accurate stellar and system parameters. We further deduce at least one oscillation frequency of 21.38c/d. It could be detected during primary eclipses only and confirms a previous photometric finding. Results point to an amplitude amplification of non-radial pulsation modes due to the eclipse mapping effect. The presence of a HeI line in the spectra indicates mass transfer in the R CMa system. Calculations of its Roche geometry give evidence that the cool secondary component may fill its Roche lobe. No evidence of a third body in the system could be found in the observed spectra.

- Water masers emitting at a radiofrequency of 22GHz are often found in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. We monitored the H_2_O maser emission of a larger sample of evolved stars of different types to study the maser properties as a function of stellar type. We wish to understand the origin and evolution of the H_2_O masers in circumstellar envelopes. In this paper, we take a closer look at R Crt and RT Vir, two nearby (<250pc) semi-regular variable stars. The findings complement our monitoring results for RX Boo and SV Peg, two other semi-regular variable stars that we have discussed in a previous paper. Within the framework of the Medicina/Effelsberg H_2_O maser monitoring programme, we observed the maser emission of R Crt and RT Vir for more than two decades with single-dish telescopes. To get insights into the distribution of maser spots in the circumstellar envelopes at different times, to get an idea of their longevity, and, where possible, to be able to link the phenomena seen in our observations to maser locations within the envelopes, we collected interferometric data for these stars, taken within the same period, from the literature. The H_2_O masers in R Crt and RT Vir exhibit brightness variations on a variety of timescales. We confirm short-time variations of individual features on timescales of months to up to 1.5 years, as seen by previous monitoring programmes. Also decade-long variations of the general brightness level, independent from individual features, were seen in both stars. These long-term variations are attributed to brightness variations occurring independently from each other in selected velocity ranges and they are independent of the optical light curve of the stars. Expected drifts in velocity of individual features are usually masked by the blending of other features with similar velocities. However, in RT Vir, we found the exceptional case of a single feature with a constant velocity over 7.5 years (<0.06km/s/yr). We attribute the long-term brightness variations to the presence of regions with higher-than-average density in the stellar wind and hosting several clouds which emit maser radiation on short timescales. These regions typically need ~20 years to cross the H_2_O maser shell, where the right conditions for exciting H_2_O masers are present. Different clouds contained in such a region all move within a narrow range of velocities, and so does their maser emission. This sometimes gives the impression of longer-living features in single-dish spectra, in spite of the short lifetimes of the individual components that lie at their origin, thus, naturally explaining the longer timescales observed. The constant velocity feature (11km/s) is likely to come from a single maser cloud, which moved through about half of RT Vir's H_2_O maser shell without changing its velocity. From this, we infer that its path was located in the outer part of the H_2_O maser shell, where RT Vir's stellar wind has, apparently, already reached its terminal outflow velocity. This conclusion is independently corroborated by the observation that the highest H_2_O maser outflow velocity in RT Vir approaches the terminal outflow velocity, as given by OH and CO observations. This is generally not observed in other semi-regular variable stars. All four stars in our study are of optical variability type SRb, indicating the absence of periodic large-amplitude variations. Therefore, any likely responses of the maser brightness to variations of the optical emission are masked by the strong short-term maser fluctuations.

- Classical Cepheids are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the precise zero points of their Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit (PL/PW) relations has profound consequences on the estimate of H_0_. Type II Cepheids are also important distance indicator and tracers of old stellar populations. The recent Data Release 2 (DR2) of the Gaia Spacecraft includes photometry and parallaxes for thousands of classical and type II cepheids. We aim at reviewing the classification of Gaia DR2 Cepheids and to derive precise PL/PW for Magellanic Cloud (MCs) and Galactic Cepheids. Information from the literature and the Gaia astrometry and photometry are adopted to assign DR2 Galactic Cepheids to the classes: Classical, Anomalous and Type II Cepheids. We re-classify the DR2 Galactic Cepheids and derive new precise PL/PW relations in the Gaia passbands for the MCs and Milky Way Cepheids. We investigated for the first time the dependence on metallicity of the PW relation for Classical Cepheids in the Gaia} bands, finding non-conclusive results. According to our analysis, the zero point of the Gaia DR2 parallaxes as estimated from Classical and Type II Cepheids seems to be likely underestimated by ~0.07mas, in full agreement with recent literature. The next Gaia data releases are expected to fix this zero point offset to eventually allow a determination of H_0_ to less than 1%.

- We developed a new approach to provide accurate estimates of the metal content, reddening, and true distance modulus of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs). The method is based on homogeneous optical (BVI) and near-infrared (JHK) mean magnitudes and on predicted period-luminosity-metallicity relations (IJHK) and absolute mean magnitude-metallicity relations (BV). We obtained solutions for three different RRL samples in {omega}Cen: first overtone (RRc, 90), fundamental (RRab, 80), and global (RRc+RRab) in which the period of first overtones were fundamentalized. The metallicity distribution shows a well defined peak at [Fe/H]~-1.98 and a standard deviation of {sigma}=0.54dex. The spread is, as expected, metal-poor ([Fe/H]<=-2.3) objects. The current metallicity distribution is ~0.3dex more metal-poor than similar estimates for RRLs available in the literature. The difference vanishes if the true distance modulus we estimated is offset by -0.06/-0.07mag in true distance modulus. We also found a cluster true distance modulus of {mu}=13.720{+/-}0.002{+/-}0.030mag, where the former error is the error on the mean and the latter is the standard deviation. Moreover, we found a cluster reddening of E(B-V)=0.132{+/-}0.002{+/-}0.028mag and spatial variations of the order of a few arcmin across the body of the cluster. Both the true distance modulus and the reddening are slightly larger than similar estimates available in the literature, but the difference is within 1{sigma}. The metallicity dependence of distance diagnostics agrees with theory and observations, but firm constraints require accurate and homogeneous spectroscopic measurements.

- We present mean reddenings toward 3525 RR0 Lyrae stars from the Galactic bulge fields of the MACHO Survey. These reddenings are determined using the color at minimum V-band light of the RR0 Lyrae stars themselves and are found to be in general agreement with extinction estimates at the same location obtained from other methods.

- Accurate and homogeneous atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, Vt, [Fe/H]) are derived for 74 FGK non-variable supergiants from high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio, echelle spectra. Extremely high precision for the inferred effective temperatures (10-40K) is achieved by using the line-depth ratio method. The new data are combined with atmospheric values for 164 classical Cepheids, observed at 675 different pulsation phases, taken from our previously published studies.
