- X-ray observations have revealed in other galaxies a class of extranuclear X-ray point sources with X-ray luminosities of 10^39^-10^41^ergs/s, exceeding the Eddington luminosity for stellar mass X-ray binaries. These ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) may be powered by intermediate-mass black holes of a few thousand M_Sun_ or stellar mass black holes with special radiation processes. In this paper, we present a survey of ULXs in 313 nearby galaxies with D_25_>1 within 40Mpc with 467 ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) archival observations. The HRI observations are reduced with uniform procedures, refined by simulations that help define the point source detection algorithm employed in this survey. A sample of 562 extragalactic X-ray point sources with L_X_=10^38^-10^43^ergs/s is extracted from 173 survey galaxies, including 106 ULX candidates within the D_25_ isophotes of 63 galaxies and 110 ULX candidates between 1D_25_ and 2D_25_ of 64 galaxies, from which a clean sample of 109 ULXs is constructed to minimize the contamination from foreground or background objects.

- We present a polarimetric and spectroscopic study of the persistent ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 0614+091 aimed at searching for the emission of a relativistic particle jet and at unveiling the orbital period Porb of the system. We obtained r-band polarimetric observations with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) equipped with the PAOLO polarimeter and with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) equipped with the ALFOSC instrument, covering ~2h and ~0.5h observations, respectively. We carried out low resolution spectroscopy of the system using the ESO Very Large Telescope equipped with FORS1 for ~1.5h (16 spectra covering the range 4300-8000{AA}).

- Photoelectric UBVR photometry of Cyg X-1 obtained during the coordinated international campaign 'Optical Monitoring of Unique Astrophysical objects', carried out in observatories of CIS countries (Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistanin and Ukraine) 1994-1998 is presented. The data are presented as a single set, taking into account systematic differences between individual data sets. In total 2258 UBVR observations were obtained during 407 nights.

- The results of Cyg X-1 = HDE 226868/V1357 Cyg optical spectral monitoring in 2002-2004 are discussed. Spectral observations were carried out on Peak Terskol Observatory (Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, resolution R=45000 and 13000) and Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO, Korea, R=30000, 44000). Each spectrum covers the main part of optical spectral range. During 33 observational nights 75 echelle spectra were obtained in the times of the "soft" and "hard" states of Cyg X-1. The X-ray influence on spectral line profiles was studied. The RXTE/ASM data were used for this purpose. The X-ray flare resulted in strong variations of Halpha and HeII4686{AA} emission component profiles during night. This behaviour we connect with variations of ionization structure of matter in the system. Line profile variations with the orbital phase were observed. The spectral atlas for Cyg X-1 was constructed. The contented line identification was done. There were revealed 172 lines and blends which belong to 12 chemical elements: H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, S, Fe, Zn. The HDE 226868 spectral classification as ON star was confirmed.

- We report on ground-based optical observations of 10 cataclysmic binaries that were discovered through their X-ray emission. Time-resolved radial velocity spectroscopy yields unambiguous orbital periods for eight objects and ambiguous results for the remaining two. The orbital periods range from 87 minutes to 9.38 hr. We also obtained time-series optical photometry for six targets, four of which have coherent pulsations. These periods are 1218s for 1RXSJ045707.4+452751, 628s for AXJ1740.2-2903, 477s for AXJ1853.3-0128, and 935s for IGRJ19267+1325. A total of seven of the sources have coherent oscillations in X-rays or optical, indicating that they are intermediate polars (DQ Herculis stars). Time-resolved spectroscopy of one object, SwiftJ2218.4+1925, shows that it is an AM Herculis star, or polar, and IGRJ19552+0044 may also be in that class. For another object, SwiftJ0746.2-1611, we find an orbital period of 9.384 hr and detect the spectrum of the secondary star. The secondary's spectral contribution implies a distance of 900 (+190, -150)pc, where the error bars are estimated using a Monte Carlo technique to account for correlated uncertainties.

- We present the optical/infrared (O/IR) light curve of the black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4 collected at the SMARTS 1.3m telescope from 2002 to 2010. During this time the source has undergone numerous state transitions including hard-to-soft state transitions when we see large changes in the near-IR flux accompanied by modest changes in optical flux, and three rebrightening events in 2003, 2005, and 2007 after GX 339-4 transitioned from the soft state to the hard. All but one outburst show similar behavior in the X-ray hardness-intensity diagram. We show that the O/IR colors follow two distinct tracks that reflect either the hard or soft X-ray state of the source. Thus, either of these two X-ray states can be inferred from O/IR observations alone. From these correlations we have constructed spectral energy distributions of the soft and hard states. During the hard state, the near-IR data have the same spectral slope as simultaneous radio data when GX 339-4 was in a bright optical state, implying that the near-IR is dominated by a non-thermal source, most likely originating from jets. Non-thermal emission dominates the near-IR bands during the hard state at all but the faintest optical states, and the fraction of non-thermal emission increases with increasing optical brightness. The spectral slope of the optical bands indicate that a heated thermal source is present during both the soft and hard X-ray states, even when GX 339-4 is at its faintest optical state. We have conducted a timing analysis of the light curve for the hard and soft states and find no evidence of a characteristic timescale within the range of 4-230days.

- With the advent of more sensitive all-sky instruments, the transient universe is being probed in greater depth than ever before. Taking advantage of available resources, we have established a comprehensive database of black hole (and black hole candidate) X-ray binary (BHXB) activity between 1996 and 2015 as revealed by all-sky instruments, scanning surveys, and select narrow-field X-ray instruments on board the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), Monitor of All-Sky X-ray Image (MAXI), Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), and Swift telescopes; the Whole-sky Alberta Time-resolved Comprehensive black-Hole Database Of the Galaxy or WATCHDOG. Over the past two decades, we have detected 132 transient outbursts, tracked and classified behavior occurring in 47 transient and 10 persistently accreting BHs, and performed a statistical study on a number of outburst properties across the Galactic population. We find that outbursts undergone by BHXBs that do not reach the thermally dominant accretion state make up a substantial fraction (~40%) of the Galactic transient BHXB outburst sample over the past ~20 years. Our findings suggest that this "hard-only" behavior, observed in transient and persistently accreting BHXBs, is neither a rare nor recent phenomenon and may be indicative of an underlying physical process, relatively common among binary BHs, involving the mass-transfer rate onto the BH remaining at a low level rather than increasing as the outburst evolves. We discuss how the larger number of these "hard-only" outbursts and detected outbursts in general have significant implications for both the luminosity function and mass-transfer history of the Galactic BHXB population.

- We report on new X-ray observations of the large-scale jets recently discovered in X-rays from the black hole candidate 4U 1755-33. Our observations in 2004 show that the jets found in 2001 are still present in X-rays. However, sensitive radio observations in 2004 failed to detect the jets.
