- In a deep 60ks Chandra ACIS X-ray observation of the very young cluster NGC 6530, we detect 884 X-ray point sources and argue that a very large fraction of them (90%-95%) must be pre-main-sequence (PMS) cluster members, mostly of low masses. This is a significant enlargement of the known NGC 6530 stellar population with respect to previous optical studies, including H{alpha} surveys. We identify 220 X-ray sources with catalogued stars down to V=17, while most unidentified sources have fainter counterparts. Moreover, we find an infrared counterpart in the 2MASS (<II/246>) catalog for 731 X-ray sources. The optically identified cluster X-ray sources are found in a band in the H-R diagram above the main sequence, in the locus of 0.5-1.5Myr PMS stars, with masses down to 0.5-1.5M_{sun}_.

- NGC 3293 is a young stellar cluster at the northwestern periphery of the Carina Nebula Complex that remained poorly explored until now. We want to characterize the stellar population of NGC 3293 in order to evaluate key parameters of the cluster population like the age and the mass function, and to test claims of an abnormal IMF and a deficit of M<=2.5M_{sun}_ stars. WWe performed a deep (70 ksec) X-ray observation of NGC 3293 with Chandra and detected 1026 individual X-ray point sources. These X-ray data directly probe the low-mass (M<=2M_{sun}_) stellar population by means of the strong X-ray emission of young low-mass stars. We identify counterparts for 74% of the X-ray sources in our deep near-infrared images. Our data clearly show that NGC 3293 hosts a large population of ~solar-mass stars, refuting claims of a lack of M<=2.5M_{sun}_ stars. The analysis of the color-magnitude diagram suggests an age of ~8-10Myr for the low-mass population of the cluster. There are at least 511 X-ray detected stars with color-magnitude positions that are consistent with young stellar members within 7 arcmin from the cluster center. The number ratio of X-ray detected stars in the [1-2]M_{sun}_ range versus the M<=5M_{sun}_ stars (known from optical spectroscopy) is well consistent with the expectation from a normal field initial mass function. Most of the early B-type stars and ~20% of the later B-type stars are detected as X-ray sources. Our data shows that NGC 3293 is one of the most populous stellar clusters in the entire Carina Nebula Complex (only excelled by Tr 14, and very similar to Tr 16 and Tr 15). The cluster has probably harbored several O-type stars, the supernova explosions of which may have had an important impact on the early evolution of the Carina Nebula Complex.

- Very Large Telescope images in BVI are used to identify the optical counterparts to bright Chandra X-ray points sources discovered by Kraft and coworkers (2001, Cat. <J/ApJ/560/675>). Of a total of 111 X-ray point sources with L_X_>2x10^36^erg/s present in a 56arcmin^2^ field centered on this galaxy, 58 have optical counterparts. On the basis of the sizes, optical magnitudes, and colors, 20 new globular cluster counterparts of X-ray sources are identified, and three are identified on the basis of their sizes. This brings the total number of globular cluster X-ray sources in this galaxy to 33 and establishes that 30% of the X-ray point sources in NGC 5128 are associated with globular clusters.

- We present deep and high-resolution (FWHM~0.4-arcsec) near-infrared (NIR) imaging observations of the NGC 7538 IRS 1-3 region (in JHK bands), and IRS 9 region (in HK bands) using the 8.2m Subaru telescope. The NIR analysis is complemented with Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) low-frequency observations at 325, 610, and 1280MHz, molecular line observations of H^13^CO^+^ (J=1-0), and archival Chandra X-ray observations. Using the 'J-H/H-K' diagram, 144 Class II and 24 Class I young stellar object (YSO) candidates are identified in the IRS 1-3 region. Further analysis using 'K/H-K' diagram yields 145 and 96 red sources in the IRS 1-3 and IRS 9 regions, respectively. A total of 27 sources are found to have X-ray counterparts. The YSO mass function (MF), constructed using a theoretical mass-luminosity relation, shows peaks at substellar (~0.08-0.18M_{sun}_) and intermediate (~1-1.78M_{sun}_) mass ranges for the IRS 1-3 region. The MF can be fitted by a power law in the low-mass regime with a slope of {Gamma} ~0.54-0.75, which is much shallower than the Salpeter value of 1.35. An upper limit of 10.2 is obtained for the star to brown dwarf ratio in the IRS 1-3 region. GMRT maps show a compact HII region associated with the IRS 1-3 sources, whose spectral index of 0.87+/-0.11 suggests optical thickness. This compact region is resolved into three separate peaks in higher resolution 1280MHz map, and the 'east' subpeak coincides with the IRS 2 source. H^13^CO^+^ (J=1-0) emission reveals peaks in both IRS 1-3 and IRS 9 regions, none of which are coincident with visible nebular emission, suggesting the presence of dense cloud nearby. The virial masses are approximately of the order of 1000 and 500M_{sun}_ for the clumps in IRS 1-3 and IRS 9 regions, respectively.

- The reflection nebula NGC 7129 has long been known to be a site of recent star formation as shown, e.g., by the presence of deeply embedded protostars and HH objects. However, studies of the stellar population produced in the star formation process have remained rudimentary. A major step forward has been made with recent Spitzer imaging of the region. This study represents the next step towards a systematic assessment of the pre-main sequence population in NGC 7129. Completeness of the pre-main sequence sample is necessary for studying key features that allow the star-forming process to be understood, such as disk evolution, dynamical evolution, and mass function. At a presumed age of ~3Myr, NGC 7129 is in the critical range where disks around young stars disappear.

- The young open cluster NGC 2264 was observed on 2002 January 67 with the CFH12K mosaic CCD on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to investigate the shape of the initial mass function (IMF). In order to select the pre-main-sequence (PMS) members more completely, Chandra X-Ray Observatory archival data were retrieved and used for the identification of X-ray-emitting weak-line T Tauri stars. In addition, the (R-I, V-I) diagram was used to exclude background late-type giants, and a statistical approach was applied to estimate the number of contaminating foreground main-sequence stars.

- NGC 253 is a local, starbursting spiral galaxy with strong X-ray emission from hot gas, as well as many point sources. We have conducted a spectral survey of the X-ray population of NGC 253 using a deep XMM-Newton observation. NGC 253 only accounts for ~20 per cent of the XMM-Newton EPIC field of view, allowing us to identify ~100 X-ray sources that are unlikely to be associated with NGC 253. Hence, we were able to make a direct estimate of contamination from, for example, foreground stars and background galaxies. X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of galaxy populations are often used to characterize their properties. There are several methods for estimating the luminosities of X-ray sources with few photons. We have obtained spectral fits for the brightest 140 sources in the 2003 XMM-Newton observation of NGC 253, and compare the best-fitting luminosities of those 69 non-nuclear sources associated with NGC 253 with luminosities derived using other methods. We find the luminosities obtained from these various methods to vary systematically by a factor of up to 3 for the same data; this is largely due to differences in absorption. We therefore conclude that assuming Galactic absorption is probably unwise; rather, one should measure the absorption for the population.

- We present new Chandra X-ray data of the NGC 1333 embedded cluster and combine these data with existing Chandra data, Spitzer photometry, and ground-based spectroscopy of both the NGC 1333 and Serpens cloud core clusters to perform a detailed study of the X-ray properties of two of the nearest embedded clusters to the Sun. We first present new, deeper observations of NGC 1333 with Chandra ACIS-I and combine these with existing Spitzer observations of the region. In NGC 1333, a total of 95 cluster members are detected in X-rays of which 54 were previously identified in the Spitzer data.

- We established the catalog of X-ray point sources in the field of the Magellanic-type spiral galaxy NGC 3109 (DDO 236) from two ROSAT PSPC observations. Of the 91 X-ray sources 26 are contained within the HI extent of NGC 3109 as derived by Jobin & Carignan (1990AJ....100..648J) with the VLA. For 10 of these we can determine accurate hardness ratios {delta}HR2<=0.2. We find 3 candidate AGN, 2 candidate X-ray binaries and one source which may belong to either class. We also find 2 candidate foreground stars. In a field of 8'x8' observed with the NTT in the I-b and and centered on the nucleus of NGC 3109 we determine candidates for optical counterparts in the X-ray error circle of 7 ROSAT PSPC sources. We apply a spectral fit to the ROSAT spectrum of the X-ray brightest absorbed candidate AGN behind NGC 3109, RX J1003.2-2607. Assuming a galactic foreground hydrogen column density of 4.3x10^20^cm^-2^ we derive from the X-ray spectral fit, assuming reduced metallicities (~0.2 solar), a hydrogen column density due to NGC 3109 of 11+/-^7^_5_x10^20^cm^-2^. This value is slightly larger than the hydrogen column density derived from the 21-cm observations of ~8x10^20^cm^-2^. We estimate that the molecular mass fraction of the gas is not larger than ~60%.

- The ROSAT PSPC detector was used to obtain a deep pointing with its center on the young open cluster NGC 2516 and total integration time of 9284 sec. Altogether 64 X-ray sources were detected showing strong concentration towards the optical cluster centre. This suggests that most of the sources are actually associated with NGC 2516. 42 of these sources could be identified with optical stars in the field of the cluster; after correction for a mean offset between optical and nominal ROSAT positions of about 13", optical star and X-ray source positions are found to agree, on the average, within about 9", while maximum observed positional differences amount to 27". X-ray sources identified with optical cluster stars include HR 3147 (=HD 66194; B2.5IVe), the visually brightest B star in the cluster, three close visual late B-type binaries (h 4027 A,B, h 4031 A,B, and I 1104 A,B) with projected separations ranging between about 4x10^16^cm and 6x10^16^cm, as well as several (six) chemically peculiar Bp/Ap(Si) and Ap(SrCrEu) stars.
