- Our aim is to extend the investigations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) beyond the well studied Fornax and Virgo clusters. We measured spectroscopic redshifts of about 400 compact object candidates with 19.2<V<22.4mag in the central region of the Centaurus galaxy cluster (d=43Mpc), using 3 pointings with VIMOS@VLT. The luminosity range of the candidates covers the bright end of the globular cluster (GC) luminosity function and the luminosity regime of UCDs in Fornax and Virgo. Within the area surveyed, our completeness in terms of slit allocation is ~30%.

- Scattering and absorption processes in stellar atmosphere act the center-to-limb variations of the intensity (CLVI) and the linear polarization (CLVP) of stellar radiation. There are several theoretical and observational studies of CLVI using different stellar models, however, most studies of CLVP have concentrated on the solar atmosphere and have not considered the CLVP in cooler non-gray stellar atmospheres at all. In this paper, we present a theoretical study of the CLV of the intensity and the linear polarization in continuum spectra of different spectral type stars. We solve the radiative transfer equations for polarized light iteratively assuming no magnetic field and considering a planeparallel model atmospheres and various opacities.

- One of the necessary parameters needed for the interpretation of the light curves of transiting exoplanets or eclipsing binary stars (as well as interferometric measurements of a star or microlensing events) is how the intensity and polarization of light changes from the center to the limb of a star. Scattering and absorption processes in the stellar atmosphere affect both the center-to-limb variation of intensity (CLVI) and polarization (CLVP). In this paper, we present a study of the CLVI and CLVP in continuum spectra, taking into consideration the different contributions of scattering and absorption opacity for a variety of spectral type stars with spherical atmospheres. We solve the radiative transfer equation for polarized light in the presence of a continuum scattering, taking into consideration the spherical model of a stellar atmosphere. To cross-check our results, we developed two independent codes that are based on Feautrier and short characteristics methods, respectively, We calculate the center-to-limb variation of intensity (CLVI) and polarization (CLVP) in continuum for the Phoenix grid of spherical stellar model atmospheres for a range of effective temperatures (4000-7000K), gravities (logg=1.0-5.5), and wavelengths (4000-7000{AA}). In addition, we present several tests of our codes and compare our calculations for the solar atmosphere with published photometric and polarimetric measurements. We also show that our two codes provide similar results in all considered cases.

- We present new observations of the center-to-limb variation of spectral lines in the quiet Sun. Our long-slit spectra are corrected for scattered light, which amounts to 4-8% of the continuum intensity, by comparison with a Fourier transform spectrum of the disk center. Different spectral lines exhibit different behaviors, depending on their sensitivity to the physical conditions in the photosphere and the range of depths they probe as a function of the observing angle, providing a rich database to test models of the solar photosphere and line formation.

- Central black hole masses for 117 spiral galaxies representing morphological stages S0/a through Sc and taken from the large spectroscopic survey of Ho et al. (Cat. <J/ApJS/112/315>) are derived using Ks-band data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Black hole masses are found using a calibrated black hole-Ks bulge luminosity relation, while bulge luminosities are measured by means of a two-dimensional bulge-disk decomposition routine.

- In this paper, radial velocities of 94 galaxies brighter than about V_tot=20mag in the direction of the central Fornax cluster have been measured. The galaxies have been selected from the photometric catalog of Paper I (Hilker et al., 1998, Cat. <J/A+AS/134/59>). Most of the velocity determinations of the fainter galaxies are based on strong emission lines of late type galaxies. Table 2 of this paper contains the position, magnitude and velocity of all galaxies. Except for 8 Fornax members, all galaxies lie in the background. Among the 8 members, there are 5 nucleated dwarf ellipticals that are already listed in the FCC (Ferguson, 1989, Cat. <VII/180>). Two of the 3 "new" members are very compact and have surface brightnesses comparable to globular clusters, however their luminosities are in the range of dwarf elliptical nuclei.

- Using a statistically representative sample of 911 central galaxies (CENs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 group catalogue, we study how the structure (shape and size) of the first rank (by stellar mass) group and cluster members depends on (1) galaxy stellar mass (M_star_), (2) the global environment defined by the dark matter halo mass (M_halo_) of the host group and (3) the local environment defined by their special halocentric position. We quantify the structure of SDSS galaxies with a galfit-based pipeline that fits two-dimensional Sersic models to the r-band image data. Through tests with simulated and real galaxy images, we demonstrate that our pipeline can recover Sersic parameters without significant bias. Moreover, to test the impact of local environment on CENs, we compare the structure of CENs with that satellite galaxies (SATs) of comparable M_star_.

- The Galactic center is the closest region in which we can study star formation under extreme physical conditions like those in high-redshift galaxies. We measure the temperature of the dense gas in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and examine what drives it. We have mapped the inner 300pc of the CMZ in the temperature-sensitive J=3-2 para-formaldehyde (p-H_2_CO) transitions. We use the 3_2,1_-2_2,0_/3_0,3_-2_0,2_ line ratio to determine the gas temperature in n~10^4^-10^5^cm^-3^ gas. We produce temperature maps and cubes with 30" and 1km/s resolution and publish all data in FITS form; they can be recovered from digital object identifier doi:10.7910/DVN/27601.

- We present results from a high-resolution wide-field imaging observation of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in H^13^CO^+^ J=1-0 and SiO v=0, J=2-1 emission lines using the 45-m telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory in order to depict the high-density molecular gas mass distribution and explore molecular gas affected by interstellar shocks. By using the clumpfind algorithm we identify 114 molecular clumps in the H^13^CO^+^ data cube.
