- Description:
- The BL Lac object S5 0716+714, a highly variable blazar, underwent an impressive outburst in January 2015 (Phase A), followed by minor activity in February (Phase B). The MAGIC observations were triggered by the optical flux observed in Phase A, corresponding to the brightest ever reported state of the source in the R-band. The comprehensive dataset collected is investigated in order to shed light on the mechanism of the broadband emission. Methods. Multi-wavelength light curves have been studied together with the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The sample includes data from Effelsberg, OVRO, Metsahovi, VLBI, CARMA, IRAM, SMA, Swift-UVOT, KVA, Tuorla, Steward, RINGO3, KANATA, AZT-8+ST7, Perkins, LX-200, Swift-XRT, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT and MAGIC. The flaring state of Phase A was detected in all the energy bands, providing for the first time a multi-wavelength sample of simultaneous data from the radio band to the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100GeV). In the constructed SED, the Swift-XRT+NuSTAR data constrain the transition between the synchrotron and inverse Compton components very accurately, while the second peak is constrained from 0.1GeV to 600GeV by Fermi+MAGIC data. The broadband SED cannot be described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model as it severely underestimates the optical flux in order to reproduce the X-ray to {gamma}-ray data. Instead we use a two-zone model. The electric vector position angle (EVPA) shows an unprecedented fast rotation. An estimation of the redshift of the source by combined high-energy (HE, 0.1GeV<E<100GeV) and VHE data provides a value of z=0.31+/-0.02stats+/-0.05sys, confirming the literature value. The data show the VHE emission originating in the entrance and exit of a superluminal knot in and out of a recollimation shock in the inner jet. A shock-shock interaction in the jet seems responsible for the observed flares and EVPA swing. This scenario is also consistent with the SED modeling.

- Description:
- BL Lac objects are an extreme type of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that belong to the largest population of gamma-ray sources: blazars. This class of AGNs shows a double-bumped spectral energy distribution that is commonly described in terms of a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission process, whereas the low-energy component that dominates their emission between the infrared and the X-ray band is tightly connected to the high-energy component that peaks in the gamma-rays. Two strong connections that link radio and mid-infrared emission of blazars to the emission in the gamma-ray band are well established. They constitute the basis for associating gamma-ray sources with their low-energy counterparts. We searched for a possible link between X-ray and gamma-ray emissions for the subclass of BL Lacs using all archival Swift/XRT observations combined with Fermi data for a selected sample of 351 sources. Analyzing ~2400ks of Swift/XRT observations that were carried out until December 2018, we discovered that above the gamma-ray flux threshold Fgamma~=3x10^-12^erg/cm^2^/s, 96% of all Fermi BL Lacs have an X-ray counterpart that is detected with signal-to-noise ratio >3. We did not find any correlation or clear trend between X-ray and gamma-ray fluxes and/or spectral shapes, but we discovered a correlation between the X-ray flux and the mid-infrared color. Finally, we discuss on a possible interpretation of our results in the SSC framework.

- Description:
- We present the results of optical (R-band) photometric and polarimetric monitoring and Very Long Baseline Array imaging of the blazar S4 0954+658, along with Fermi {gamma}-ray data during a multi-waveband outburst in 2011 March-April. After a faint state with a brightness level R~17.6mag registered in the first half of 2011 January, the optical brightness of the source started to rise and reached ~14.8mag during the middle of March, showing flare-like behavior. The most spectacular case of intranight variability was observed during the night of 2011 March 9, when the blazar brightened by ~0.7mag within 7hr. During the rise of the flux, the position angle of the optical polarization rotated smoothly over more than 300{deg}. At the same time, within 1{sigma} uncertainty, a new superluminal knot appeared with an apparent speed of 19.0+/-0.3c. We have very strong evidence that this knot is associated with the multi-waveband outburst in 2011 March-April. We also analyze the multi-frequency behavior of S4 0954+658 during a number of minor outbursts from 2008 August to 2012 April. We find some evidence of connections between at least two additional superluminal ejecta and near-simultaneous optical flares.

- Description:
- The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of ultraviolet (UV)+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circumgalactic/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro+ (2018Natur.558..406N) reported the detection of two OVII WHIM absorbers at z=0.4339 and 0.3551 in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a z=0.433 group and that the higher-z OVII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The z=0.3551 candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass logM_*_/M_{sun}_~9.7), which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad HI Ly{alpha} absorbers (Doppler widths of b=40-80km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) that provide metallicity-independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly{alpha} absorbers are ~2x closer to the nearest luminous (L>0.25L*) galaxy (700kpc) than narrow (b<30km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) ones (1300kpc) but ~2x further than OVI absorbers (350kpc). These observations suggest that gravitational collapse heats portions of the IGM to form the WHIM, but with feedback that does not enrich the IGM far beyond galaxy/group halos to levels currently observable in UV/X-ray metal lines.

- Description:
- We present the detailed timing and spectral results obtained during the Swift observations of the TeV-detected blazar 1ES 1959+650 in 2016 August-2017 November. The source continued its trend of gradually enhancing X-ray flaring activity in the 0.3-10keV energy range, starting in 2015 August, and a new highest historical brightness state was recorded twice. A long-term high state was superimposed by both weak and strong flares, and we detected 32 instances of intraday X-ray flux variability, including several occasions of extremely fast fluctuations with fractional amplitudes of 5.4%-7.5% within 1ks exposures. The 0.3-10keV spectra generally showed a best fit with the log-parabolic model, yielding a very wide range of the curvature parameter b and the photon index at 1keV. The position of the synchrotron SED peak Ep showed an extreme variability on various timescales between energies less than 0.1keV and 7.7+/-0.7keV, with 25% of the spectra peaking at hard X-rays. In 2017 May-November, the source mostly showed lower spectral curvature and an anticorrelation b-Ep, expected in the case of efficient stochastic acceleration of X-ray-emitting electrons. The 0.3-100GeV and optical-UV fluxes also attained their highest historical values in this period, although the latter showed an anticorrelation with the 0.3-10keV emission, which is explained by the stochastic acceleration of electrons with a narrow initial energy distribution, having an average energy significantly higher than the equilibrium energy.

- Description:
- We present a spectral catalog for blazars based on the BeppoSAX archive. The sample includes 44 High-energy peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), 14 Low-energy peaked BL Lacs (LBLs), and 28 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). A total of 168 LECS, MECS, and PDS spectra were analyzed, corresponding to observations taken in the period 1996-2002. The 0.1-50keV continuum of LBLs and FSRQs is generally fitted by a single power law with Galactic column density.

- Spectral energy distributions of Roma BZCAT blazars

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We combined multi-wavelength data for blazars from the Roma-BZCAT catalog and analyzed hundreds of X-ray spectra. We present the fluxes and spectral energy distributions (SEDs), in 12 frequency bands from radio to {gamma}-rays, for a final sample of 2214 blazars. Using a model-independent statistical approach, we looked for systematic trends in the SEDs; the most significant trends involved the radio luminosities and X-ray spectral indices of the blazars. We used a principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the basis vectors of the blazar SEDs and, in order to maximize the size of the sample, imputed missing fluxes using the K-nearest neighbors method. Using more than an order of magnitude more data than was available when Fossati et al. first reported trends of SED shape with blazar luminosity, we confirmed the anti-correlation between radio luminosity and synchrotron peak frequency, although with greater scatter than was seen in the smaller sample. The same trend can be seen between bolometric luminosity and synchrotron peak frequency. Finally, we used all of the available blazar data to determine an empirical SED description that depends only on the radio luminosity at 1.4GHz and the redshift. We verified that this statistically significant relation was not a result of the luminosity-luminosity correlations that are natural in flux-limited samples (i.e., where the correlation is actually caused by the redshift rather than the luminosity).

- Description:
- In this paper, we report new results of spectroscopic observations of {gamma}-ray blazar S5 0716+714 from 2019 September to 2020 March with the 2.4m optical telescope at Lijiang Observatory of Yunnan Observatories. The median cadence of observations is ~1 day. During the second observation period (Epoch2), the observational data reveal an extremely bright state and a bluer-when-brighter (BWB) chromatism. The BWB trend of Epoch2 differs significantly from that of the first observation period (Epoch1). A significantly brightness-dependent BWB chromatism emerges in the total data of Epoch1 and Epoch2. The BWB trend becomes weaker toward the brighter states, and likely becomes saturated at the highest state. Based on a log-parabolic function, a power law of synchrotron peak flux and frequency {nu}p, and a power law of the curvature of synchrotron spectrum and its {nu}p, simulation well reproduces the brightness-dependent BWB trend of S5 0716+714. The BWB trend is seemingly controlled by the shift of {nu}p with respect to the observational window, and effectively may be dominated by the variations of electron average energy and magnetic field in the emitting region.

- Spectroscopic redshifts of BL Lac objects
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/764/135
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report on spectroscopic observations covering most of the 475 BL Lacs in the second Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Including archival measurements (correcting several erroneous literature values) we now have spectroscopic redshifts for 44% of the BL Lacs. We establish firm lower redshift limits via intervening absorption systems and statistical lower limits via searches for host galaxies for an additional 51% of the sample leaving only 5% of the BL Lacs unconstrained. The new redshifts raise the median spectroscopic {overline}{Z} from 0.23 to 0.33 and include redshifts as large as z=2.471. Spectroscopic redshift minima from intervening absorbers have {overline}{Z}, showing a substantial fraction at large z and arguing against strong negative evolution. We find that detected BL Lac hosts are bright ellipticals with black hole masses M_{bullet}_~10^8.5^-10^9^, substantially larger than the mean of optical AGNs and LAT Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar samples. A slow increase in M_{bullet}_ with z may be due to selection bias. We find that the power-law dominance of the optical spectrum extends to extreme values, but this does not strongly correlate with the {gamma}-ray properties, suggesting that strong beaming is the primary cause of the range in continuum dominance.

- Spectroscopy of 120 emission-line ICRF2 candidates

- Description:
- Continuing our program of spectroscopic observations of International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) sources, we present redshifts for 120 quasars and radio galaxies. Data were obtained with five telescopes: the 3.58m European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope, the two 8.2m Gemini telescopes, the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), and the 6.0m Big Azimuthal Telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in Russia. The targets were selected from the International VLBI Service for Geodesy & Astrometry candidate International Celestial Reference Catalog which forms part of an observational very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) program to strengthen the celestial reference frame. We obtained spectra of the potential optical counterparts of more than 150 compact flat-spectrum radio sources, and measured redshifts of 120 emission-line objects, together with 19 BL Lac objects. These identifications add significantly to the precise radio-optical frame tie to be undertaken by Gaia, due to be launched in 2013, and to the existing data available for analyzing source proper motions over the celestial sphere. We show that the distribution of redshifts for ICRF sources is consistent with the much larger sample drawn from Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey, implying that the ultra-compact VLBI sources are not distinguished from the overall radio-loud quasar population. In addition, we obtained NOT spectra for five radio sources from the FIRST and NRAO VLA Sky Survey catalogs, selected on the basis of their red colors, which yielded three quasars with z>4.
