- We present a study of the HI and optical properties of nearby (z<=0.1) Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSBGs). We started with a literature sample of ~900 LSBGs and divided them into three morphological classes: spirals, irregulars, and dwarfs. Of these, we could use ~490 LSBGs to study their HI and stellar masses, colours, and colour-magnitude diagrams, and local environment, compare them with normal, High Surface Brightness (HSB) galaxies and determine the differences between the three morphological classes. We found that LSB and HSB galaxies span a similar range in HI and stellar masses, and have a similar M_HI_/M_{star}_-M_{star}_ relationship. Among the LSBGs, as expected, the spirals have the highest average HI and stellar masses, both of about 10^9.8^M_{sun}_. The LSGBs' (g-r) integrated colour is nearly constant as function of HI mass for all classes. In the colour-magnitude diagram, the spirals are spread over the red and blue regions whereas the irregulars and dwarfs are confined to the blue region. The spirals also exhibit a steeper slope in the M_HI_/M_{star}_-M_{star}_ plane. Within their local environment, we confirmed that LSBGs are more isolated than HSB galaxies, and LSB spirals more isolated than irregulars and dwarfs. Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistical tests on the HI mass, stellar mass, and number of neighbours indicate that the spirals are a statistically different population from the dwarfs and irregulars. This suggests that the spirals may have different formation and HI evolution than the dwarfs and irregulars.

- The Lyman-{alpha} line in the ultraviolet (UV) and the [CII] line in the far-infrared (FIR) are widely used tools to identify galaxies in the early Universe and to obtain insights into interstellar medium (ISM) properties in high-redshift galaxies. By combining data obtained with ALMA in band 7 at ~320GHz as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE) with spectroscopic data from DEIMOS at the Keck Observatory, VIMOS and FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope, we assembled a unique sample of 53 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at 4.4<z<6 in which we detect both the Lyman-{alpha} line in the UV and the [CII] line in the FIR. The goal of this paper is to constrain the properties of the Ly{alpha} emission in these galaxies in relation to other properties of the ISM. We used [CII], observed with ALMA, as a tracer of the systemic velocity of the galaxies, and we exploited the available optical spectroscopy to obtain the Ly{alpha}-[CII] and ISM-[CII] velocity offsets. We find that 90% of the selected objects have Ly{alpha}-[CII] velocity offsets in the range 0<{Delta}v_Ly{alpha}-[CII]_<400km/s, in line with the few measurements available so far in the early Universe, and significantly smaller than those observed at lower redshifts. At the same time, we observe ISM-[CII] offsets in the range -500<{Delta}v_ISM-[CII]_<0km/s, in line with values at all redshifts, which we interpret as evidence for outflows in these galaxies. We find significant anticorrelations between {Delta}v_Ly{alpha}-[CII]_ and the Ly{alpha} rest-frame equivalent width EW_0_(Ly{alpha}) (or equivalently, the Ly{alpha} escape fraction f_esc_(Ly{alpha})): galaxies that show smaller {Delta}v_Ly{alpha}-[CII]_ have larger EW_0_(Ly{alpha}) and f_esc_(Ly{alpha}). We interpret these results in the framework of available models for the radiative transfer of Ly{alpha} photons. According to the models, the escape of Ly{alpha} photons would be favored in galaxies with high outflow velocities, producing large EW_0_(Ly{alpha}) and small {Delta}v_Ly{alpha}-[CII]_, in agreement with our observations. The uniform shell model would also predict that the Ly{alpha} escape in galaxies with slow outflows (0<v_out_<300km/s) is mainly determined by the neutral hydrogen column density (NHI) along the line of sight, while the alternative model by Steidel et al. (2010ApJ...717..289S) would more highly favor a combination of NHI at the systemic velocity and covering fraction as driver of the Ly{alpha} escape. We suggest that the increase in Ly{alpha} escape that is observed in the literature between z~2 and z~6 is not due to a higher incidence of fast outflows at high redshift, but rather to a decrease in average NHI along the line of sight, or alternatively, a decrease in HI covering fraction.

- We present the basic data for a large ground-based spectroscopic survey for z~3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), photometrically selected using rest-UV colors from very deep images in 17 high Galactic latitude fields. The total survey covers an area of 0.38deg^2^ and includes 2347 photometrically selected candidate LBGs to an apparent {R}_AB_ magnitude limit of 25.5. Approximately half of these objects have been observed spectroscopically using the Keck telescopes, yielding 940 redshifts with <z>=2.96+/-0.29. We discuss the images, photometry, target selection, and spectroscopic program in some detail and present catalogs of the photometric and spectroscopic data, made available in electronic form. We discuss the general utility of conducting nearly volume-limited redshift surveys in prescribed redshift intervals using judicious application of photometric preselection.

- We present a sample of 407 z~3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) to a limiting isophotal u-band magnitude of 27.6mag in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The LBGs are selected using a combination of photometric redshifts and the u-band drop-out technique enabled by the introduction of an extremely deep u-band image obtained with the Keck I telescope and the blue channel of the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer. The Keck u-band image, totaling 9hr of integration time, has a 1{sigma} depth of 30.7mag/arcsec^2^, making it one of the most sensitive u-band images ever obtained. The u-band image also substantially improves the accuracy of photometric redshift measurements of ~50% of the z~3 LBGs, significantly reducing the traditional degeneracy of colors between z~3 and z~0.2 galaxies.

- We present the largest to date sample of hydrogen Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy candidates at any redshift, with 18 Lyman {alpha} emitters (LAEs) and seven Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), obtained from the SSA22 field with Subaru/Suprime-Cam. The sample is based on the 159 LAEs and 136 LBGs observed in the field, all with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts, and these LyC candidates are selected as galaxies with counterparts in a narrow-band filter image which traces LyC at z>=3.06. Many LyC candidates show a spatial offset between the rest-frame non-ionizing ultraviolet (UV) detection and the LyC-emitting substructure or between the Ly{alpha} emission and LyC. The possibility of foreground contamination complicates the analysis of the nature of LyC emitters, although statistically it is highly unlikely that all candidates in our sample are contaminated by foreground sources. Many viable LyC LAE candidates have flux density ratios inconsistent with standard models, while also having too blue UV slopes to be foreground contaminants. Stacking reveals no significant LyC detection, suggesting that there is a dearth of objects with marginal LyC signal strength, perhaps due to a bimodality in the LyC emission. The foreground contamination corrected 3{sigma} upper limits of the observed average flux density ratios are fLyC/fUV < 0.08 from stacking LAEs and f_LyC_/f_UV_<0.02 from stacking LBGs. There is a sign of a positive correlation between LyC and Ly{alpha}, suggesting that both types of photons escape via a similar mechanism. The LyC detection rate among protocluster LBGs is seemingly lower compared to the field.

- In Churchill et al. (2013ApJ...763L..42C), we used halo abundance matching applied to 182 galaxies in the MgII Absorber-Galaxy Catalog (MAGIICAT) and showed that the mean MgII{lambda}2796 equivalent width follows a tight inverse-square power law, W_r_(2796){prop.to}(D/R_vir_)^-2^, with projected location relative to the galaxy virial radius and that the MgII absorption covering fraction is effectively invariant with galaxy virial mass, M_h_, over the range 10.7<=logM_h_/M_{sun}_<=13.9. In this work, we explore multivariate relationships between W_r_(2796), virial mass, impact parameter, virial radius, and the theoretical cooling radius that further elucidate self-similarity in the cool/warm (T=10^4^-10^4.5^K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) with virial mass. We show that virial mass determines the extent and strength of the MgII absorbing gas such that the mean W_r_(2796) increases with virial mass at fixed distance while decreasing with galactocentric distance for fixed virial mass. The majority of the absorbing gas resides within D=~0.3R_vir_, independent of both virial mass and minimum absorption threshold; inside this region, and perhaps also in the region 0.3<D/R_vir_<=1, the mean W_r_(2796) is independent of virial mass. Contrary to absorber-galaxy cross-correlation studies, we show there is no anti-correlation between W_r_(2796) and virial mass. We discuss how simulations and theory constrained by observations support self-similarity of the cool/warm CGM via the physics governing star formation, gas-phase metal enrichment, recycling efficiency of galactic scale winds, filament and merger accretion, and overdensity of local environment as a function of virial mass.

- Historical star magnitudes from catalogues by Ptolemy (137 AD), al-Sufi (964) and Tycho Brahe (1602/27) are converted to the Johnson V-mag scale and compared to modern day values from the HIPPARCOS catalogue. The deviations (or "errors") are tested for dependencies on three different observational influences. The relation between historical and modern magnitudes is found to be linear in all three catalogues which yields a linear conversion of the old magnitudes to the modern scale. A slight dependency on the colour index (B-V) is shown throughout the data sets and al-Sufi's as well as Brahe's data also give fainter values for stars of lower culmination height (indicating extinction). In all three catalogues, a star's estimated magnitude is influenced by the brightness of its immediate surroundings. After correction for the three effects, the remaining variance within the magnitude errors can be considered as approximate accuracy of the pre-telescopic magnitude estimates.

- The Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90GHz survey aims to characterise the physical and chemical evolution of high-mass clumps. Recently completed, it mapped 90GHz line emission towards 3246 high-mass clumps identified from the ATLASGAL 870um Galactic plane survey. By utilising the broad frequency coverage of the Mopra telescope's spectrometer, maps in 16 different emission lines were simultaneously obtained. Here, we describe the first catalogue of the detected line emission, generated by Gaussian profile fitting to spectra extracted towards each clumps' 870um dust continuum peak. Synthetic spectra show that the catalogue has a completeness of >95%, a probability of a false-positive detection of <0.3%, and a relative uncertainty in the measured quantities of <20% over the range of detection criteria. The detection rates are highest for the (1-0) transitions of HCO^+^, HNC, N_2_H^+^, and HCN (~77-89%). Almost all clumps (~95%) are detected in at least one of the molecular transitions, just over half of the clumps (~53%) are detected in four or more of the transitions, while only one clump is detected in 13 transitions. We find several striking trends in the ensemble of properties for the different molecular transitions when plotted as a function of the clumps' evolutionary state as estimated from Spitzer mid-IR images, including (1) HNC is relatively brighter in colder, less evolved clumps than those that show active star formation, (2) N2H+ is relatively brighter in the earlier stages, (3) that the observed optical depth decreases as the clumps evolve, and (4) the optically thickest HCO^+^ emission shows a 'blue-red asymmetry' indicating overall collapse that monotonically decreases as the clumps evolve. This catalogue represents the largest compiled database of line emission towards high-mass clumps and is a valuable data set for detailed studies of these objects.

- We describe the sample design for the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey and present the final properties of the main samples along with important considerations for using these samples for science. Our target selection criteria were developed while simultaneously optimizing the size distribution of the MaNGA integral field units (IFUs), the IFU allocation strategy, and the target density to produce a survey defined in terms of maximizing signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, and sample size. Our selection strategy makes use of redshift limits that only depend on i-band absolute magnitude (M_i_), or, for a small subset of our sample, M i and color (NUV-i). Such a strategy ensures that all galaxies span the same range in angular size irrespective of luminosity and are therefore covered evenly by the adopted range of IFU sizes. We define three samples: the Primary and Secondary samples are selected to have a flat number density with respect to M_i_ and are targeted to have spectroscopic coverage to 1.5 and 2.5 effective radii (Re), respectively. The Color-Enhanced supplement increases the number of galaxies in the low-density regions of color-magnitude space by extending the redshift limits of the Primary sample in the appropriate color bins. The samples cover the stellar mass range 5x10^8^<=M*<=3x10^11^M_{sun}/h^2^ and are sampled at median physical resolutions of 1.37 and 2.5kpc for the Primary and Secondary samples, respectively. We provide weights that will statistically correct for our luminosity and color-dependent selection function and IFU allocation strategy, thus correcting the observed sample to a volume-limited sample.
