- We present the first catalogue of point-source ultraviolet (UV)-excess sources selected from the UV-Excess Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (UVEX). UVEX images the Northern Galactic Plane in the U, g, r and HeI{lambda}5875 bands in the Galactic latitude range -5<b<+5{deg}. Through an automated algorithm, which works on a field-to-field basis, we select blue UV-excess sources in 211 square degrees from the (U-g) versus (g-r) colour-colour diagram and the g versus (U-g) and g versus (g-r) colour-magnitude diagrams. The UV-excess catalogue covers the magnitude range 14<g<22.5, contains 2170 sources and consists of a mix of white dwarfs, post-common-envelope objects, interacting binaries, quasars and active galactic nuclei. Two other samples of outliers were found during the selection: (i) a "subdwarf" sample, consisting of no less than 9872 candidate metal-poor stars or lightly reddened main-sequence stars, and (ii) a "purple" sample consisting of 803 objects, most likely a mix of reddened late M giants, T Tauri stars, planetary nebulae, symbiotic stars and carbon stars. Cross-matching the selected UV-excess catalogue with other catalogues aids with the first classification of the different populations and shows that more than 99 per cent of our selected sources are unidentified sources.

- We present a robust measurement and analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions at z=4-8. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging over the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey/GOODS fields, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, and the Hubble Frontier Field deep parallel observations near the Abell 2744 and MACS J0416.1-2403 clusters. The combination of these surveys provides an effective volume of 0.6-1.2x10^6^Mpc^3^ over this epoch, allowing us to perform a robust search for faint (M_UV_=-18) and bright (M_UV_<-21) high-redshift galaxies. We select candidate galaxies using a well-tested photometric redshift technique with careful screening of contaminants, finding a sample of 7446 candidate galaxies at 3.5<z<8.5, with >1000 galaxies at z~6-8. We measure both a stepwise luminosity function for candidate galaxies in our redshift samples, and a Schechter function, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to measure robust uncertainties. At the faint end, our UV luminosity functions agree with previous studies, yet we find a higher abundance of UV-bright candidate galaxies at z>=6.

- We compute the properties of a sample of 221 local, early-type galaxies with a spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling software, CIGALEMC. Concentrating on the star-forming (SF) activity and dust contents, we derive parameters such as the specific star formation rate (sSFR), the dust luminosity, dust mass, and temperature. In our sample, 52% is composed of elliptical (E) galaxies and 48% of lenticular (S0) galaxies. We find a larger proportion of S0 galaxies among galaxies with a large sSFR and large specific dust emission. The stronger activity of S0 galaxies is confirmed by larger dust masses. We investigate the relative proportion of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and SF galaxies in our sample using spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey data and near-infrared selection techniques, and find a larger proportion of AGN-dominated galaxies in the S0 sample than the E one. This could corroborate a scenario where blue galaxies evolve into red ellipticals by passing through an S0 AGN active period while quenching its star formation. Finally, we find a good agreement comparing our estimates with color indicators.

- The U.S. Naval Observatory is in the process of making new reductions of the Astrographic Catalogue (AC) using a modern reference system, the ACRS, which represents the system of the FK5. The data from the Vatican Zone, whose plates are centered between declinations +55 and +64 degrees (eq. 1900), have been analyzed for scale, rotation, tilt, coma, magnitude equation, radial distortion and distortions introduced by the use of reseaux in the Carte du Ciel program. The result is a positional catalog of over 256,000 stars on eq. J2000.0, epoch of observation. Additionally, all stars have been matched with the Tycho Input Catalog (revised); those numbers have been added for additional identification purposes.

- We study the dust content of a large optical input sample of 910 early-type galaxies (ETG) in the Virgo cluster, also extending to the dwarf ETG, and examine the results in relation to those on the other cold ISM components. We have searched for far-infrared emission in all galaxies in the input sample using the 250um image of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). This image covers a large fraction of the cluster with an area of ~55 square degrees. For the detected ETG we measured fluxes in five bands from 100 to 500um, and estimated the dust mass and temperature with modified black-body fits. Dust is detected above the completeness limit of 25.4mJy at 250um in 46 ETG, 43 of which are in the optically complete part of the input sample. In addition, dust is present at fainter levels in another six ETG. We detect dust in the four ETG with synchrotron emission, including M 87.

- We present the VST Early-type GAlaxy Survey (VEGAS), which is designed to obtain deep multiband photometry in g, r, i, of about one hundred nearby galaxies down to 27.3, 26.8, and 26mag/arcsec^2^ respectively, using the ESO facility VST/OmegaCAM. The goals of the survey are 1) to map the light distribution up to ten effective radii, r_e_; 2) to trace color gradients and surface brightness fluctuation gradients out to a few r_e_ for stellar population characterization; and 3) to obtain a full census of the satellite systems (globular clusters and dwarf galaxies) out to 20% of the galaxy virial radius. The external regions of galaxies retain signatures of the formation and evolution mechanisms that shaped them, and the study of nearby objects enables a detailed analysis of their morphology and interaction features. To clarify the complex variety of formation mechanisms of early-type galaxies (ETGs), wide and deep photometry is the primary observational step, which at the moment has been pursued with only a few dedicated programs. The VEGAS survey has been designated to provide these data for a volume-limited sample with exceptional image quality. In this commissioning photometric paper we illustrate the capabilities of the survey using g- and i-band VST/OmegaCAM images of the nearby galaxy NGC 4472 and of smaller ETGs in the surrounding field. Our surface brightness profiles reach rather faint levels and agree excellently well with previous literature. Genuine new results concern the detection of an intracluster light tail in NGC 4472 and of various substructures at increasing scales. We have also produced extended (g-i) color profiles. The VST/OmegaCAM data that we acquire in the context of the VEGAS survey provide a detailed view of substructures in the optical emission from extended galaxies, which can be as faint as a hundred times below the sky level.

- The origins of S0 galaxies remain obscure, with various mechanisms proposed for their formation, likely depending on environment. These mechanisms would imprint different signatures in the galaxies' stellar kinematics out to large radii, offering a method for distinguishing between them. We aim to study a sample of six S0 galaxies from a range of environments, and use planetary nebulae (PNe) as tracers of their stellar populations out to very large radii, to determine their kinematics in order to understand their origins. Using a special-purpose instrument, the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, we observe and extract PNe catalogues for these six systems. We show that the PNe have the same spatial distribution as the starlight, that the numbers of them are consistent with what would be expected in a comparable old stellar population in elliptical galaxies, and that their kinematics join smoothly onto those derived at smaller radii from conventional spectroscopy. The high-quality kinematic observations presented here form an excellent set for studying the detailed kinematics of S0 galaxies, in order to unravel their formation histories. We find that PNe are good tracers of stellar kinematics in these systems. We show that the recovered kinematics are largely dominated by rotational motion, although with significant random velocities in most cases.

- Pratton, Melott and McKee (1997ApJ...479L..15P) showed that the velocity field around clusters could generate an apparent distortion that appears as tangential structures or radial filaments. In the present paper we determine the parameters of the Peebles' model (1976ApJ...205..318P) describing infall of galaxies onto clusters with the aim of testing quantitatively the amplitude of this distortion. The distances are determined from the concept of sosie galaxies (Paturel, 1994A&A...289..711P) using 21 calibrators for which the distances were recently calculated from two independent Cepheid calibrations. We use both B and I-band magnitudes.

- The most luminous galaxies in the blue passband have a larger correlation amplitude than L* galaxies. They do not appear to be preferentially located in rich clusters or groups, but a significant fraction of them seem to be in systems which include fainter members. We present an analysis of fields centered on 18 Very Luminous Galaxies (M_B_<=-21) selected from the Southern Sky Redshift Survey 2 (Cat. <J/AJ/116/1>, based on new observations and public data of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (Cat. <VII/226>); we present also additional data on a CfA VLG and on Arp 127.
