- Description:
- The WISE satellite surveyed the entire sky multiple times in four infrared (IR) wavelengths (3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22{mu}m). This all-sky IR photometric survey makes it possible to leverage many of the large publicly available spectroscopic redshift surveys to measure galaxy properties in the IR. While characterizing the cross-matching of WISE data to a single survey is a straightforward process, doing it with six different redshift surveys takes a fair amount of space to characterize adequately, because each survey has unique caveats and characteristics that need addressing. This work describes a data set that results from matching five public redshift surveys with the AllWISE data release, along with a reanalysis of the data described in Lake+ (2012, J/AJ/143/7). The combined data set has an additional flux limit of 80{mu}Jy (19.14 AB mag) in WISE's W1 filter, imposed in order to limit it to targets with high completeness and reliable photometry in the AllWISE data set. Consistent analysis of all of the data is only possible if the color bias discussed in Ilbert+ (2004MNRAS.351..541I) is addressed (e.g., the techniques explored in Lake+ 2017AJ....153..189L). The sample defined herein is used in a companion paper in this series to measure the luminosity function of galaxies at 2.4{mu}m rest-frame wavelength, and the selection process of the sample is optimized for this purpose.

- WISE MIR properties of galaxies in compact groups

- Description:
- We study the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of galaxies in compact groups and their environmental dependence using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data. We use a volume-limited sample of 670 compact groups and their 2175 member galaxies with M_r_<-19.77 and 0.01<z<0.0741, drawn from Sohn+ (2016, J/ApJS/225/23), which were identified using a friends-of-friends algorithm. Among the 2175 galaxies, 1541 galaxies are detected at WISE 12um with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3. Among the 1541 galaxies, 433 AGN-host galaxies are identified by using both optical and MIR classification schemes. Using the remaining 1108 non-AGN galaxies, we find that the MIR [3.4]-[12] colors of compact group early-type galaxies are on average bluer than those of cluster early-type galaxies. When compact groups have both early- and late-type member galaxies, the MIR colors of the late-type members in those compact groups are bluer than the MIR colors of cluster late-type galaxies. As compact groups are located in denser regions, they tend to have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR color galaxies. These trends are also seen for neighboring galaxies around compact groups. However, compact group member galaxies always have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR colors than their neighboring galaxies. Our findings suggest that the properties of compact group galaxies depend on both internal and external environments of compact groups, and that galaxy evolution is faster in compact groups than in the central regions of clusters.

- WISE W1/W2 Tully-Fisher relation calibrator data

- Description:
- In order to explore local large-scale structures and velocity fields, accurate galaxy distance measures are needed. We now extend the well-tested recipe for calibrating the correlation between galaxy rotation rates and luminosities-capable of providing such distance measures-to the all-sky, space-based imaging data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) W1 (3.4 {mu}m) and W2 (4.6 {mu}m) filters. We find a correlation of line width to absolute magnitude (known as the Tully-Fisher relation, TFR) of M_W1_^b,i,k,a^=-20.35-9.56(logW_mx_^i^-2.5) (0.54 mag rms) and M_W2_^b,i,k,a^=-19.76-9.74(logW_mx_^i^-2.5) (0.56 mag rms) from 310 galaxies in 13 clusters. We update the I-band TFR using a sample 9% larger than in Tully & Courtois (2012ApJ...749...78T). We derive M_l_^b,i,k^=-21.34-8.95(logW_mx_^i^-2.5) (0.46 mag rms). The WISE TFRs show evidence of curvature. Quadratic fits give M_W1_^b,i,k,a^=-20.48-8.36(logW_mx_^i^-2.5)+3.60(loglogW_mx_^i^-2.5)^2^ (0.52 mag rms) and M_W2_^b,i,k,a^=-19.91-8.40(logW_mx_^i^-2.5)+ 4.32(loglogW_mx_^i^ -2.5)^2^ (0.55 mag rms). We apply an I-band -WISE color correction to lower the scatter and derive M_Cw1_=-20.22-9.12(logW_mx_^i^-2.5) and M_Cw2_=-19.63-9.11(logW_mx_^i^-2.5) (both 0.46 mag rms). Using our three independent TFRs (W1 curved, W2 curved, and I band), we calibrate the UNION2 Type Ia supernova sample distance scale and derive H_0_=74.4+/-1.4(stat)+/-2.4(sys) km/s/Mpc with 4% total error.

- WWFI g'-band obs. of bright cluster galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/247/43
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Observations of 170 local (z<~0.08) galaxy clusters in the northern hemisphere have been obtained with the Wendelstein Telescope Wide Field Imager (WWFI). We correct for systematic effects such as point-spread function broadening, foreground star contamination, relative bias offsets, and charge persistence. Background inhomogeneities induced by scattered light are reduced down to {Delta}SB>31 g' mag/arcsec^2^ by large dithering and subtraction of night-sky flats. Residual background inhomogeneities brighter than SB_{sigma}_<27.6 g' mag/arcsec^2^ caused by galactic cirrus are detected in front of 23% of the clusters. However, the large field of view allows discrimination between accretion signatures and galactic cirrus. We detect accretion signatures in the form of tidal streams in 22%, shells in 9.4%, and multiple nuclei in 47% of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and find two BCGs in 7% of the clusters. We measure semimajor-axis surface brightness profiles of the BCGs and their surrounding intracluster light (ICL) down to a limiting surface brightness of SB=30 g' mag/arcsec^2^. The spatial resolution in the inner regions is increased by combining the WWFI light profiles with those that we measured from archival Hubble Space Telescope images or deconvolved WWFI images. We find that 71% of the BCG+ICL systems have surface brightness (SB) profiles that are well described by a single Sersic function, whereas 29% require a double Sersic function to obtain a good fit. We find that BCGs have scaling relations that differ markedly from those of normal ellipticals, likely due to their indistinguishable embedding in the ICL.

- XDEEP2 survey catalog
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present the X-ray point-source catalog produced from the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) observations of the combined ~3.2deg^2^ DEEP2 (XDEEP2) survey fields, which consist of four ~0.7-1.1deg^2^ fields. The combined total exposures across all four XDEEP2 fields range from ~10ks to 1.1Ms. We detect X-ray point sources in both the individual ACIS-I observations and the overlapping regions in the merged (stacked) images. We find a total of 2976 unique X-ray sources within the survey area with an expected false-source contamination of ~30 sources (<~1%). Additionally, we present a Bayesian-style method for associating the X-ray sources with optical photometric counterparts in the DEEP2 catalog (complete to R_AB_<25.2) and find that 2126 (~71.4%+/-2.8%) of the 2976 X-ray sources presented here have a secure optical counterpart with a <~6% contamination fraction. We provide the DEEP2 optical source properties (e.g., magnitude, redshift) as part of the X-ray-optical counterpart catalog.

- Xinglong optical spectra of UGC3223 in 4 epochs

- Description:
- The discovery of spectral type transition of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the so-called "changing-look" (CL) phenomenon, challenges the widely accepted AGN paradigm, not only in the orientation-based unified model, but also in the standard disk model. In past decades, only a couple of nearby repeat changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) have been identified. Here we report spectroscopic observations of UGC3223 over the course of 18yr, from 2001 onwards. Combining the spectrum taken in 1987 by Stirpe, we have witnessed its type transitions from 1.5 to 2.0 to 1.8 over 32yr, and captured a long-lived (at least 10 yr) thorough "turn-off" state with a spectrum typical of a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The long-term thorough turn-off state probably suggests a once-dormant and an awakening central engine in UGC3223. We argue that the (dis)appearance of the broad Balmer emission lines can be explained by the disk-wind broad-line region model given the evolution of the calculated Eddington ratio of accretion of the supermassive black hole.

- XMM AGN optical-UV luminosities
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/539/A48
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Active galactic nuclei (AGN) emit radiation over a wide range of wavelengths, with a peak of emission in the far-UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum, a spectral region that is historically difficult to observe. Using optical, GALEX UV, and XMM-Newton data we derive the spectral energy distribution (SED) from the optical/UV to X-ray regime of a sizeable sample of AGN. The principal motivation is to investigate the relationship between the optical/UV emission and the X-ray emission and provide bolometric corrections to the hard X-ray (2-10keV) energy range, k_bol_, the latter being a fundamental parameter in current physical cosmology.

- X-ray binaries in M101 with HST optical data
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/890/150

- Description:
- The high-energy emission from nearby, star-forming galaxies is dominated by X-ray binaries, where a neutron star or black hole is accreting mass from either a low-mass (<~M_{sun}_) or high-mass (>~8M_{sun}_) star. Donor stars with intermediate masses ~3-7M_{sun}_ are also possible, but rarer in our Galaxy. Since it is not possible to separate low-, intermediate-, and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs, IMXBs, and HMXBs) from their X-ray properties alone, we use optical images of M101 taken with the Hubble Space Telescope to directly constrain the masses of donor stars in X-ray binaries down to ~3M_{sun}_. For X-ray binaries that still live within their parent star cluster, the age of the cluster provides strong constraints on the mass of the donor and hence type of binary. We present the classification, on a source-by-source basis, of 140 X-ray point sources in the nearby spiral galaxy M101 (D=6.4+/-0.2Mpc). We find that, overall, HMXBs appear to follow the spiral arms, while LMXBs dominate the bulge region as expected, but also appear to form an inter-arm disk population. The X-ray luminosity functions for HMXBs and LMXBs are well fit by a power-law distribution, dN/dL_X_{propto}L^{alpha}^, with {alpha}=-1.71+/-0.06 (HMXBs) and {alpha}=-1.96+/-0.08 (LMXBs), and the brightest sources are consistent with the expectations from sampling statistics without requiring a physical cutoff. Overall, our results for HMXB and LMXB populations agree well with the specific star formation rate map presented for M101 recently by Lehmer and collaborators.

- Short Name:

- Date:

- Description:
- We present a detailed comparative systematic study using a sample of 221 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies in comparison to a redshift-matched sample of 154 broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLSy1) galaxies based on their observations using ROSAT and/or XMM-Newton in soft X-ray band (0.1-2.0keV). A homogeneous analysis is carried out to estimate their soft X-ray photon indices ({Gamma}_X_^s^) and its correlations with other parameters of nuclear activities such as Eddington ratios (REdd), bolometric luminosities (Lbol), black hole masses (MBH), and the widths of the broad component of H{beta} lines (FWHM(H{beta})). In our analysis, we found clear evidence of the difference in the {Gamma}_X_^s^ and R_Edd_ distributions among NLSy1 and BLSy1 galaxies, with steeper {Gamma}_X_^s^ and higher R_Edd_ for the former. Such a difference also exists in the spectral index distribution in hard X-ray ({Gamma}_X_^h^), based on the analysis of 53 NLSy1 and 46 BLSy1 galaxies in the 2-10keV energy band. The difference in REdd distributions does exist even after applying the average correction for the difference in the inclination angle of NLSy1 and BLSy1 galaxies. We also estimated R_Edd_, based on SED fitting of 34 NLSy1 and 30 BLSy1 galaxies over the 0.3-10keV energy band, and found that results are still consistent with REdd estimates based on the optical bolometric luminosity. Our analysis suggests that the higher REdd in NLSy1 is responsible for its steeper X-ray spectral slope compared to the BLSy1, consistent with the disk-corona model as proposed for the luminous AGNs.

- X-ray, optical and radio monitoring of 3C 111
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/734/43
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the results of extensive multi-frequency monitoring of the radio galaxy 3C 111 between 2004 and 2010 at X-ray (2.4-10keV), optical (R band), and radio (14.5, 37, and 230GHz) wave bands, as well as multi-epoch imaging with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43GHz. Over the six years of observation, significant dips in the X-ray light curve are followed by ejections of bright superluminal knots in the VLBA images. This shows a clear connection between the radiative state near the black hole, where the X-rays are produced, and events in the jet. The X-ray continuum flux and Fe line intensity are strongly correlated, with a time lag shorter than 90 days and consistent with zero.
