- We present the results from a 1.1-mm imaging survey of the SSA22 field, known for having an overdensity of z=3.1 Lyman{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs), taken with the astronomical thermal emission camera (AzTEC) on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). We imaged a 950-arcmin2 field down to a 1{sigma} sensitivity of 0.7-1.3mJy/beam to find 125 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) with a signal-to-noise ratio >=3.5. Counterpart identification using radio and near/mid-infrared data was performed and one or more counterpart candidates were found for 59 SMGs. Photometric redshifts based on optical to near-infrared images were evaluated for 45 of these SMGs with Spitzer/IRAC data and the median value is found to be z=2.4. By combining these estimations with estimates from the literature, we determined that 10 SMGs might lie within the large-scale structure at z=3.1. The two-point angular cross-correlation function between LAEs and SMGs indicates that the positions of the SMGs are correlated with the z=3.1 protocluster. These results suggest that the SMGs were formed and evolved selectively in the high dense environment of the high-redshift Universe. This picture is consistent with the predictions of the standard model of hierarchical structure formation.

- We present a 0.72deg^2^ contiguous 1.1-mm survey in the central area of the Cosmological Evolution Survey field carried out to a 1{sigma}~1.26mJy/beam depth with the AzTEC camera mounted on the 10-m Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We have uncovered 189 candidate sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)>=3.5, out of which 129, with S/N>=4, can be considered to have little chance of being spurious (<~2 per cent). We present the number counts derived with this survey, which show a significant excess of sources when compared to the number counts derived from the ~0.5deg^2^ area sampled at similar depths in the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES).

- Instruments using arrays of many bolometers have become increasingly common in the past decade. The maps produced by such instruments typically include the filtering effects of the instrument as well as those from subsequent steps performed in the reduction of the data. Therefore interpretation of the maps is dependent upon accurately calculating the transfer function of the chosen reduction technique on the signal of interest. Many of these instruments use non-linear and iterative techniques to reduce their data because such methods can offer an improved signal-to-noise ratio over those that are purely linear, particularly for signals at scales comparable to that subtended by the array. We discuss a general approach for measuring the transfer function of principal component analysis on point sources that are small compared to the spatial extent seen by any single bolometer within the array. The results are applied to previously released AzTEC catalogues of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS), Lockman Hole, Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North and GOODS-South fields. Source flux density and noise estimates increase by roughly +10 per cent for fields observed while AzTEC was installed at the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment and +15-25 per cent while AzTEC was installed at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Detection significance is, on average, unaffected by the revised technique. The revised photometry technique will be used in subsequent AzTEC releases.

- We have used the Westerbork array to carry out an unbiased wide-field survey for H I emission features, achieving an RMS sensitivity of about 18mJy/beam at a velocity resolution of 17km/s over 1800deg2 and between -1000<VHel<+6500 km/s. The primary data consists of auto-correlation spectra with an effective angular resolution of 49' FWHM. The survey region is centered approximately on the position of Messier 31 and is Nyquist-sampled over 60x30 deg in RAxDec. In this paper we present the results for our HI detections of external galaxies at positive Local Group Standard of Rest (LGSR) velocity. We detect 155 external galaxies in excess of 8 sigma in integrated HI flux density. Plausible optical associations are found within a 30' search radius for all but one of our HI detections in DSS images, although several are not previously catalogued or do not have published redshift determinations. Our detection without a DSS association is at low galactic latitude. Twenty-three of our objects are detected in HI for the first time. We classify almost half of our detections as "confused", since one or more companions is catalogued within a radius of 30' and a velocity interval of 400km/s. Nine of the detected galaxies fall so near the edges of the survey coverage (either spatially or in velocity) that their parameters can not be reliably determined. These nine objects are excluded from the enclosed table.

- Balmer break galaxies at z<1.5 star formation

- We present a spectroscopic study of the properties of 64 Balmer break galaxies that show signs of star formation. The studied sample of star-forming galaxies spans a redshift range from 0.094 to 1.475 with stellar masses in the range 10^8^-10^12^M_{sun}_. The sample also includes eight broad emission line galaxies with redshifts between 1.5<z<3.0. We derived star formation rates (SFRs) from emission line luminosities and investigated the dependence of the SFR and specific SFR (SSFR) on the stellar mass and color. Furthermore, we investigated the evolution of these relations with the redshift. We found that the SFR correlates with the stellar mass; our data is consistent with previous results from other authors in that there is a break in the correlation, which reveals the presence of massive galaxies with lower SFR values (i.e., decreasing star formation). We also note an anticorrelation for the SSFR with the stellar mass. Again in this case, our data is also consistent with a break in the correlation, revealing the presence of massive star-forming galaxies with lower SSFR values, thereby increasing the anticorrelation. These results might suggest a characteristic mass (M_0_) at which the red sequence could mostly be assembled. In addition, at a given stellar mass, high-redshift galaxies have on average higher SFR and SSFR values than local galaxies. Finally, we explored whether a similar trend could be observed with redshift in the SSFR-(u-B) color diagram, and we hypothesize that a possible (u-B)_0_ break color may define a characteristic color for the formation of the red sequence.

Following this observational fact, we have investigated the colors of 21 bulges hosted by a selected sample of high surface brightness spiral galaxies and low surface brightness galaxies observed in the B and R optical bands and the J and Ks near-IR bands.

- There are many candidate sites of the r-process: core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe; including rare magnetorotational core-collapse supernovae), neutron star mergers (NSMs), and neutron star/black hole mergers. The chemical enrichment of galaxies --specifically dwarf galaxies-- helps distinguish between these sources based on the continual build-up of r-process elements. This technique can distinguish between the r-process candidate sites by the clearest observational difference --how quickly these events occur after the stars are created. The existence of several nearby dwarf galaxies allows us to measure robust chemical abundances for galaxies with different star formation histories. Dwarf galaxies are especially useful because simple chemical evolution models can be used to determine the sources of r-process material. We have measured the r-process element barium with Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy. We present the largest sample of barium abundances (almost 250 stars) in dwarf galaxies ever assembled. We measure [Ba/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] in this sample and compare with existing [{alpha}/Fe] measurements. We have found that a large contribution of barium needs to occur at more delayed timescales than CCSNe in order to explain our observed abundances, namely the significantly more positive trend of the r-process component of [Ba/Fe] versus [Fe/H] seen for [Fe/H]<~-1.6 when compared to the [Mg/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trend. We conclude that NSMs are the most likely source of r-process enrichment in dwarf galaxies at early times.

- It is theoretically predicted that, at low galaxy inclinations, boxy/peanut bar components have a barlens appearance of a round central component embedded in the narrow bar. We investigate barlenses in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey galaxies, studying their morphologies, stellar populations, and metallicities. We show that, when present, barlenses account for a significant portion of light of photometric bulges, i.e., the excess light on top of the disks, which highlights the importance of bars in accumulating central galaxy mass concentrations in the cosmic timescale. We made multi-component decompositions for a sample of 46 barlens galaxies drawn from the CALIFA survey, where M_{star}_/M_{sun}_=10^9.7^-10^11.4^ and z=0.005-0.03. Unsharp masks of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) r'-band mosaics were used to identify the boxy/peanut or X-shaped features. Barlenses are identified in the images using our simulation snapshots as an additional guide. Our decompositions with GALFIT include bulges, disks, and bars as well as barlenses as a separate component. For 26 of the decomposed galaxies the CALIFA DR2 V500 grating data cubes were used to explore stellar ages and metallicities at the regions of various structure components. We find that 25+/-2% of the 1064 galaxies in the whole CALIFA sample show either X-shaped or barlens features. In the decomposed galaxies with barlenses, on average 13%+/-2% of the total galaxy light belongs to this component, leaving less than 10% for possible separate bulge components. Most importantly, bars and barlenses are found to have similar cumulative stellar age and metallicity distributions. The metallicities in barlenses are on average near solar, but exhibit a large range. In some of the galaxies barlenses and X-shaped features appear simultaneously, in which case the bar origin of the barlens is unambiguous. This is the first time that a combined morphological and stellar population analysis is used to study barlenses. We show that their stars are accumulated in a prolonged time period concurrently with the evolution of the narrow bar.

- We present the results of two-component (disc+bar) and three-component (disc+bar+bulge) multiwavelength 2D photometric decompositions of barred galaxies in five Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) bands (ugriz). This sample of ~3500 nearby (z<0.06) galaxies with strong bars selected from the Galaxy Zoo citizen science project is the largest sample of barred galaxies to be studied using photometric decompositions that include a bar component. With detailed structural analysis, we obtain physical quantities such as the bar- and bulge-to-total luminosity ratios, effective radii, Sersic indices and colours of the individual components. We observe a clear difference in the colours of the components, the discs being bluer than the bars and bulges. An overwhelming fraction of bulge components have Sersic indices consistent with being pseudo-bulges. By comparing the barred galaxies with a mass-matched and volume-limited sample of unbarred galaxies, we examine the connection between the presence of a large-scale galactic bar and the properties of discs and bulges. We find that the discs of unbarred galaxies are significantly bluer compared to the discs of barred galaxies, while there is no significant difference in the colours of the bulges. We find possible evidence of secular evolution via bars that leads to the build-up of pseudo-bulges and to the quenching of star formation in the discs. We identify a subsample of unbarred galaxies with an inner lens/oval and find that their properties are similar to barred galaxies, consistent with an evolutionary scenario in which bars dissolve into lenses. This scenario deserves further investigation through both theoretical and observational work.
