- We report the results of a deep archive XMM-Newton observation of the Fornax spheroidal galaxy that we analyzed with the aim of fully characterizing the X-ray source population (in most of the cases likely to be background active galactic nuclei) detected towards the target. A cross correlation with the available databases allowed us to find a source that may be associated with a variable star belonging to the galaxy. We also searched for X-ray sources in the vicinity of the Fornax globular clusters GC 3 and GC 4 and found two sources probably associated with the respective clusters. The deep X-ray observation was also suitable for the search of the intermediate-mass black hole (of mass~=10^4^M_{sun}_) expected to be hosted in the center of the galaxy. In the case of Fornax, this search is extremely difficult since the galaxy centroid of gravity is poorly constrained because of the large asymmetry observed in the optical surface brightness. Since we cannot firmly establish the existence of an X-ray counterpart of the putative black hole, we put constraints only on the accretion parameters. In particular, we found that the corresponding upper limit on the accretion efficiency, with respect to the Eddington luminosity, is as low as a few 10^-5^.

- In this work the INTEGRAL hard X-ray selected sample of AGN has been used to investigate the possible contribution of absorbing material distributed within the host galaxies to the total amount of NH measured in the X-ray band. We collected all the available axial ratio measurements of the galaxies hosting our AGN together with their morphological information and find that also for our hard X-ray selected sample a deficit of edge-on galaxies hosting type 1 AGN is present. We estimate that in our hard X-ray selected sample there is a deficit of 24% (+/-5%) of type 1 AGN. Possible bias in redshift has been excluded, as we found the same effect in a well determined range of z where the number and the distributions of the two classes are statistically the same. Our findings clearly indicate that material located in the host galaxy on scales of hundreds of parsecs and not aligned with the putative absorbing torus of the AGN can contribute to the total amount of column density. This galactic absorber can be large enough to hide the broad line region of some type 1 AGN causing their classification as type 2 objects and giving rise to the deficiency of type 1 in edge-on galaxies.

- The high-energy emission from nearby, star-forming galaxies is dominated by X-ray binaries, where a neutron star or black hole is accreting mass from either a low-mass (<~M_{sun}_) or high-mass (>~8M_{sun}_) star. Donor stars with intermediate masses ~3-7M_{sun}_ are also possible, but rarer in our Galaxy. Since it is not possible to separate low-, intermediate-, and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs, IMXBs, and HMXBs) from their X-ray properties alone, we use optical images of M101 taken with the Hubble Space Telescope to directly constrain the masses of donor stars in X-ray binaries down to ~3M_{sun}_. For X-ray binaries that still live within their parent star cluster, the age of the cluster provides strong constraints on the mass of the donor and hence type of binary. We present the classification, on a source-by-source basis, of 140 X-ray point sources in the nearby spiral galaxy M101 (D=6.4+/-0.2Mpc). We find that, overall, HMXBs appear to follow the spiral arms, while LMXBs dominate the bulge region as expected, but also appear to form an inter-arm disk population. The X-ray luminosity functions for HMXBs and LMXBs are well fit by a power-law distribution, dN/dL_X_{propto}L^{alpha}^, with {alpha}=-1.71+/-0.06 (HMXBs) and {alpha}=-1.96+/-0.08 (LMXBs), and the brightest sources are consistent with the expectations from sampling statistics without requiring a physical cutoff. Overall, our results for HMXB and LMXB populations agree well with the specific star formation rate map presented for M101 recently by Lehmer and collaborators.

- We present Chandra studies of the X-ray binary (XRB) populations in the bulge and ring regions of the ring galaxy NGC 1291. We detect 169 X-ray point sources in the galaxy, 75 in the bulge and 71 in the ring, utilizing the four available Chandra observations totaling an effective exposure of 179 ks. We report photometric properties of these sources in a point-source catalog. There are {approx}40% of the bulge sources and {approx}25% of the ring sources showing >3{sigma} long-term variability in their X-ray count rate. The X-ray colors suggest that a significant fraction of the bulge ({approx}75%) and ring ({approx}65%) sources are likely low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). The spectra of the nuclear source indicate that it is a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) with moderate obscuration; spectral variability is observed between individual observations. We construct 0.3-8.0 keV X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) for the bulge and ring XRB populations, taking into account the detection incompleteness and background AGN contamination. We reach 90% completeness limits of {approx}1.5x10^37^ and {approx}2.2x10^37^ erg/s for the bulge and ring populations, respectively. Both XLFs can be fit with a broken power-law model, and the shapes are consistent with those expected for populations dominated by LMXBs. We perform detailed population synthesis modeling of the XRB populations in NGC 1291, which suggests that the observed combined XLF is dominated by an old LMXB population. We compare the bulge and ring XRB populations, and argue that the ring XRBs are associated with a younger stellar population than the bulge sources, based on the relative overdensity of X-ray sources in the ring, the generally harder X-ray color of the ring sources, the overabundance of luminous sources in the combined XLF, and the flatter shape of the ring XLF.

- We have created 0.3-10keV, 13yr, unabsorbed luminosity light curves for 528 X-ray sources in the central 20' of M31. We have 174 Chandra observations spaced at ~1 month intervals due to our transient monitoring program, deeper observations of the M31 nucleus, and some public data from other surveys. We created 0.5-4.5keV structure functions (SFs) for each source for comparison with the ensemble SF of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find 220 X-ray sources with luminosities >~10^35^erg/s that have SFs with significantly more variability than the ensemble AGN SF, and which are likely X-ray binaries (XBs). A further 30 X-ray sources were identified as XBs using other methods. We therefore have 250 probable XBs in total, including ~200 new identifications. This result represents great progress over the ~50 XBs and ~40 XB candidates previously identified out of the ~2000 X-ray sources within the D_25_ region of M31; it also demonstrates the power of SF analysis for identifying XBs in external galaxies. We also identify a new transient black hole candidate, associated with the M31 globular cluster B128.

- X-ray surveys contain sizable numbers of star forming galaxies, beyond the AGN which usually make the majority of detections. Many methods to separate the two populations are used in the literature, based on X-ray and multiwavelength properties. We aim at a detailed test of the classification schemes and to study the X-ray properties of the resulting samples. We build on a sample of galaxies selected at 1.4GHz in the VLA-COSMOS survey, classified by Smolcic et al. (2008ApJS..177...14S) according to their optical colours and observed with Chandra. A similarly selected control sample of AGN is also used for comparison. We review some X-ray based classification criteria and check how they affect the sample composition. The efficiency of the classification scheme devised by Smolcic et al. (2008ApJS..177...14S) is such that ~30% of composite/misclassified objects are expected because of the higher X-ray brightness of AGN with respect to galaxies. The latter fraction is actually 50% in the X-ray detected sources, while it is expected to be much lower among X-ray undetected sources. Indeed, the analysis of the stacked spectrum of undetected sources shows, consistently, strongly different properties between the AGN and galaxy samples. X-ray based selection criteria are then used to refine both samples. The radio/X-ray luminosity correlation for star forming (SF) galaxies is found to hold with the same X-ray/radio ratio valid for nearby galaxies. Some evolution of the ratio may be possible for sources at high redshift or high luminosity, tough it is likely explained by a bias arising from the radio selection. Finally, we discuss the X-ray number counts of star forming galaxies from the VLA- and C-COSMOS surveys according to different selection criteria, and compare them to the similar determination from the Chandra Deep Fields. The classification scheme proposed here may find application in future works and surveys.

- We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200ks. With a detection limit of L_X_~10^37^erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30kpc (11.5'), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler et al.'s catalog of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) (Cat. J/AJ/132/1593) identified from HST/ACS observations reveals 41 X-ray sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-law indices (~1.1 for the GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC-LF at fainter luminosities down to 10^35^erg/s. We also detect 101 sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic active galactic nuclei (52+/-11 [1{sigma}]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray surveys.

- The Groth field is one of the sky regions that will be targeted by the OSIRIS Tunable Filter Emission Line Object survey in the optical 820nm and 920nm atmospheric windows. In the present paper, public Chandra X-ray data with total exposure time of 200ks are analyzed and combined with optical broadband data of the Groth field, in order to study a set of optical structural parameters of the X-ray emitters and its relation with X-ray properties. To this aim, we processed the raw, public X-ray data using the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations, and determined and analyzed different structural parameters, in order to produce a morphological classification of X-ray sources. We present the morphology of 340 X-ray emitters with optical counterpart detected. Objects have been classified by X-ray type using a diagnostic diagram relating X-ray-to-optical ratio (X/O) to hardness ratio. We did not find any clear correlation between X-ray and morphological types. We analyzed the angular clustering of X-ray sources with optical counterpart using two-point correlation functions. A significant positive angular clustering was obtained from a preliminary analysis of four subsamples of the X-ray sources catalog. The clustering signal of the optically extended counterparts is similar to that of strongly clustered populations like red and very red galaxies, suggesting that the environment plays an important role in active galactic nuclei phenomena. Finally, we combined optical structural parameters with other X-ray and optical properties, and we confirmed an anticorrelation between the X/O ratio and the Abraham concentration index, which might suggest that early-type galaxies have lower Eddington rates than those of late-type galaxies.

- We obtained a sample of 143 normal galaxies with X-ray luminosity in the range 10^38^-10^43^erg/s from the cross-correlation of the ROSAT HRI Brera Multi-scale Wavelet (BMW-HRI) Catalogue with the Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database (LEDA). We find that the average X-ray properties of this sample are in good agreement with those of other samples of galaxies in the literature. We selected a complete flux limited serendipitous sample of 32 galaxies from which we derived the logN-logS distribution of normal galaxies in the flux range 1.1-110x10^-14^erg/cm^2^/s. The resulting distribution is consistent with the Euclidean -1.5 slope. Comparisons with other samples, such as the Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey, the ROSAT All Sky Survey, the XMM-Newton/2dF survey, and the Chandra Deep Field Survey indicate that the logN-logS distribution of normal galaxies is consistent with a Euclidean slope over a flux range of about 6 decades.
