- We present new BV(RI)_C_H{alpha} photometry of the young open cluster NGC 663. The H{alpha} photometry is complete down to magnitude R_C_=15.4, corresponding to spectral type A5 for the cluster members. This allows detection of mild and strong H{alpha} emission in all B-type stars in the cluster. In addition to the 22 Be stars known in the observed field of NGC 663, we discovered four new faint stars of this type. We find that Be stars in NGC 663 cover the whole range of the B spectral type. They are, however, most populous among stars with spectral types falling in the range between B0 and B3, where their fraction amounts to 31+/-8%. Among B-type stars later than B3, Be stars are much less abundant: only 7 out of 101 observed stars, that is, 7+/-3%, were detected. About 70% of the observed Be stars in NGC 663 show detectable variations of light. In the time interval covered by our observations, the ranges of the largest variations reach 0.4mag in the I_C_ band. By means of the isochrone fitting, we derived the cluster distance of 2.1kpc, age of 20-25Myr, and the mean colour excess E(R-I)_C_=0.54mag, with a ~0.1mag scatter due to differential reddening.

- The B0V star BD+46 3474 lies near the front surface of a dense molecular cloud and illuminates the emission/reflection nebula IC 5146. The HAeBe variable BD +46 3471 is embedded in the same cloud, about 10' (3.5pc) away. CCD photometry in BV(RI)_C_ (to V=22) and in JHK (to about K=16.5) has been obtained for the young clusters surrounding each of these two bright stars. Some 100 emission-H{alpha} stars brighter than R=20.5 have been found in the area, most of them in IC 5146. (Among these are two that have spectra resembling a high-excitation Herbig-Haro [HH] object plus a stellar continuum).

- We describe a technique to identify Be stars in open clusters using Stroemgren b, y, and narrowband H{alpha} photometry. We first identify the B-type stars of the cluster using a theoretical isochrone fit to the (b-y, y) color-magnitude diagram. The strongest Be stars are easily identified in a (b-y, y-H{alpha}) color-color diagram, but those with weaker H{alpha} emission (classified as possible Be star detections) may be confused with evolved or foreground stars. Here we present such photometry plus H{alpha} spectroscopy of members of the cluster NGC 3766 to demonstrate the accuracy of our technique.

- The star formation rate (SFR) is one of the main parameters used to analyze the evolution of galaxies through time. The need for recovering the light reprocessed by dust commonly requires the use of low spatial resolution far-infrared data. Recombination line luminosities provide an alternative, although uncertain dust-extinction corrections based on narrowband imaging or long-slit spectroscopy have traditionally posed a limit to their applicability. Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) is clearly the way to overcome this kind of limitation. We obtain integrated H{alpha}, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR)-based SFR measurements for 272 galaxies from the CALIFA survey at 0.005<z<0.03 using single-band and hybrid tracers. We aim to determine whether the extinction-corrected H{alpha} luminosities provide a good measure of the SFR and to shed light on the origin of the discrepancies between tracers. Updated calibrations referred to H{alpha} are provided. The well-defined selection criteria and large statistics allow us to carry out this analysis globally and split by properties, including stellar mass and morphological type. We derive integrated, extinction-corrected H{alpha} fluxes from CALIFA, UV surface and asymptotic photometry from GALEX and integrated WISE 22{mu}m and IRAS fluxes. We find that the extinction-corrected H{alpha} luminosity agrees with the hybrid updated SFR estimators based on either UV or H{alpha} plus IR luminosity over the full range of SFRs (0.03-20M_{sun}_/yr). The coefficient that weights the amount of energy produced by newly-born stars that is reprocessed by dust on the hybrid tracers, a_IR_, shows a large dispersion. However, this coefficient does not became increasingly small at high attenuations, as expected if significant highly-obscured H{alpha} emission were missed, i.e., after a Balmer decrement-based attenuation correction is applied. Lenticulars, early-type spirals, and type-2 AGN host galaxies show smaller coefficients because of the contribution of optical photons and AGN to dust heating. In the local Universe, the H{alpha} luminosity derived from IFS observations can be used to measure SFR, at least in statistically-significant, optically-selected galaxy samples, once stellar continuum absorption and dust attenuation effects are accounted for. The analysis of the SFR calibrations by galaxies properties could potentially be used by other works to study the impact of different selection criteria in the SFR values derived, and to disentangle selection effects from other physically motivated differences, such as environmental or evolutionary effects.

- We present a catalogue of candidate Halpha emission and absorption line sources and blue objects in the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) region. We use a point source catalogue of the GBS fields (two strips of (lxb)=(6{deg}x1{deg}) centred at b=1.5{deg} above and below the Galactic centre), covering the magnitude range 16>=r'>=22.5. We utilize (r'-i', r'-Halpha) colour-colour diagrams to select Halpha emission and absorption line candidates, and also identify blue objects (compared to field stars) using the r'-i' colour index. We identify 1337 Halpha emission line candidates and 336 Halpha absorption line candidates. These catalogues likely contain a plethora of sources, ranging from active (binary) stars, early-type emission line objects, cataclysmic variables (CVs) and low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to background active galactic nuclei (AGN). The 389 blue objects we identify are likely systems containing a compact object, such as CVs, planetary nebulae and LMXBs. Hot subluminous dwarfs (sdO/B stars) are also expected to be found as blue outliers. Crossmatching our outliers with the GBS X-ray catalogue yields sixteen sources, including seven (magnetic) CVs and one qLMXB candidate among the emission line candidates, and one background AGN for the absorption line candidates. One of the blue outliers is a high state AM CVn system. Spectroscopic observations combined with the multi-wavelength coverage of this area, including X-ray, ultraviolet and (time-resolved) optical and infrared observations, can be used to further constrain the nature of individual sources.

- We have carried out a semi-automated search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the INT Photometric H-Alpha Survey (IPHAS) catalogue. We present the PN search and the list of selected candidates. We cross correlate the selected candidates with a number of existing infrared galactic surveys in order to gain further insight into the nature of the candidates. Spectroscopy of a subset of objects is used to estimate the number of PNe present in the entire candidate list. The overall aim of the IPHAS PN project is to carry out a deep census of PNe in the northern Galactic plane, an area where PN detections are clearly lacking. The PN search is carried out on the IPHAS photometric catalogues. The candidate selection is based on the IPHAS and 2MASS/UKIDSS colours of the objects and the final candidate selection is made visually.

- We present a survey of optically emitting supernova remnants (SNRs) in M31 based on H{alpha} and [S II] images in the Local Group Survey. Using these images, we select objects that have [S II]:H{alpha}>0.4 and circular shapes. We identify 156 SNR candidates, of which 76 are newly found objects. We classify these SNR candidates according to two criteria: the SNR progenitor type (Type Ia and core-collapse (CC) SNRs) and the morphological type. Type Ia and CC SNR candidates make up 23% and 77%, respectively, of the total sample. Most of the CC SNR candidates are concentrated in the spiral arms, while the Type Ia SNR candidates are rather distributed over the entire galaxy, including the inner region. The CC SNR candidates are brighter in H{alpha} and [S II] than the Type Ia SNR candidates. We derive a cumulative size distribution of the SNR candidates, finding that the distribution of the candidates with 17<D<50 pc is fitted well by a power law with the power-law index {alpha}=2.53+/-0.04. This indicates that most of the SNR candidates identified in this study appear to be in the Sedov-Taylor phase. The [S II]:H{alpha} distribution of the SNR candidates is bimodal, with peaks at [S II]:H{alpha}~0.4 and~0.9. The properties of these SNR candidates vary little with the galactocentric distance. The H{alpha} and [S II] surface brightnesses show a good correlation with the X-ray luminosity of the SNR candidates that are center-bright.

- We study the stellar cluster population in two adjacent fields in the nearby, face-on spiral galaxy, M83, using multi-wavelength WFC3/HST imaging. After automatic detection procedures, the clusters are selected through visual inspection to be centrally concentrated, symmetric, and resolved on the images, which allows us to differentiate between clusters and likely unbound associations. We compare our sample with previous studies and show that the differences between the catalogues are largely due to the inclusion of large numbers of diffuse associations within previous catalogues as well as the inclusion of the central starburst region, where the completeness limit is significantly worse than in the surrounding regions. We derive the size distribution of the clusters, which is well described by a log-normal distribution with a peak at ~2.5pc, and find evidence for an expansion in the half-light radius of clusters with age. The luminosity function of the clusters is well approximated by a power-law with index, -2, over most of the observed range, however a steepening is seen at M_V=-9.3 and -8.8 in the inner and outer fields, respectively. Additionally, we show that the cluster population is inconsistent with a pure power-law mass distribution, but instead exhibits a truncation at the high mass end. If described as a Schechter function, the characteristic mass is 1.6 and 0.5x10^5^M_{sun}_, for the inner and outer fields, respectively, in agreement with previous estimates of other cluster populations in spiral galaxies. Comparing the predictions of the mass independent disruption (MID) and mass dependent disruption (MDD) scenarios with the observed distributions, we find that both models can accurately fit the data. However, for the MID case, the fraction of clusters destroyed (or mass lost) per decade in age is dependent on the environment, hence, the age/mass distributions of clusters are not universal. In the MDD case, the disruption timescale scales with galactocentric distance (being longer in the outer regions of the galaxy) in agreement with analytic and numerical predictions. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results on other extragalactic surveys, focussing on the fraction of stars that form in clusters and the need (or lack thereof) for infant mortality.

- Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on 3C 390.3 in 1994-1995 are presented. The broadband fluxes (B, V, R, and I), the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux F_{lambda}_(5177{AA}), and the integrated emission-line fluxes of H{alpha}, H{beta}, H{gamma}, He I 5876, and He II {lambda}4686 all show a nearly monotonic increase with episodes of milder short-term variations superposed. The amplitude of the continuum variations increases with decreasing wavelength (4400-9000{AA}). The optical continuum variations follow the variations in the ultraviolet and X-ray with time delays, measured from the centroids of the cross-correlation functions, typically around 5 days, but with uncertainties also typically around 5 days; zero time delay between the high-energy and low-energy continuum variations cannot be ruled out. The strong optical emission lines H{alpha}, H{beta}, H{gamma}, and He I {lambda}5876 respond to the high-energy continuum variations with time delays typically about 20 days, with uncertainties of about 8 days. There is some evidence that He II {lambda}4686 responds somewhat more rapidly, with a time delay of around 10 days, but again, the uncertainties are quite large (~8 days). The mean and rms spectra of the H{alpha} and H{beta} line profiles provide indications for the existence of at least three distinct components located at +/-4000 and 0km/s relative to the line peak. The emission-line profile variations are largest near line center.

- At the Universitaetssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones we have monitored the Seyfert-1 galaxy 3C 120 between September 2014 and March 2015 in BVRI and a narrow band filter covering the redshifted H{alpha} line; in addition we obtained a single con-temporary spectrum with FAST at Mt. Hopkins. Compared to earlier epochs 3C 120 is about a factor of three brighter, allowing us to study the shape of the broad line region (BLR) and the dust torus in a high luminosity phase. The analysis of the light curves yields that the dust echo is rather sharp and symmetric in contrast to the more complex broad H{alpha} BLR echo. We investigate how far this supports an optically thick bowl-shaped BLR and dust torus geometry as proposed by Kawaguchi & Mori (2010ApJ...724L.183K) and Goad et al. (2012MNRAS.426.3086G). The comparison with several parameterizations of these models supports the following geometry: the BLR clouds lie inside the bowl closely above the bowl rim, up to a half covering angle 0{deg}<theta<40{deg} (measured against the equatorial plane). Then the BLR is spread over many isodelay surfaces, yielding a smeared and structured echo as observed. Furthermore, if the BLR clouds shield the bottom of the bowl rim against radiation from the nucleus, the hot dust emission comes essentially from the top edge of the bowl (40{deg}<theta< 45{deg}). Then, for small inclinations as for 3C120, the top dust edge forms a ring which largely coincides with a narrow range of isodelay surfaces, yielding the observed sharp dust echo. The scale height of the BLR increases with radial distance from the black hole. This leads to luminosity dependent foreshortening effects of the lag. We discuss implications and possible corrections of the foreshortening for the black hole mass determination and consequences for the lag (size) - luminosity relationships and the difference to interferometric torus sizes.
