- We present a detailed study of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori) in its ongoing outburst phase starting from 2008 September to 2013 March. Our 124 nights of photometric observations were carried out in optical V, R, I, and near-infrared J, H, K bands, and 59 nights of medium-resolution spectroscopic observations were done in the 5200-9000{AA} wavelength range. All observations were carried out with the 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope and 2m IUCAA Girawali Telescope. Our observations show that over the past four and a half years, V1647 Ori and region C near the Herbig-Haro object HH 22A have been undergoing a slow dimming at a rate of ~0.04mag/yr and ~0.05mag/yr, respectively, in R band, which is six times slower than the rate during a similar stage of V1647 Ori in the 2003 outburst. We detected change in flux distribution over the reflection nebula, implying changes in circumstellar matter distribution between the 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Apart from steady wind of velocity ~350km/s, we detected two episodic magnetic reconnection driven winds. Forbidden [OI]{lambda}6300 and [FeII]{lambda}7155 lines were also detected, implying shock regions probably from jets. We tried to explain the outburst timescales of V1647 Ori using the standard models of the FUors kind of outburst and found that pure thermal instability models like Bell and Lin cannot explain the variations in timescales. In the framework of various instability models we conclude that one possible reason for the sudden ending of the 2003 outburst in 2005 November was a low-density region or gap in the inner region (~1AU) of the disk.

- NGC7129 is a bright reflection nebula located in the molecular cloud complex near l=105.4{deg}, b=+9.9{deg}, about 1.15kpc distant. Embedded within the reflection nebula is a young cluster dominated by a compact grouping of four early-type stars: BD+65{deg}1638 (B3V), BD+65{deg}1637 (B3e), SVS 13 (B5e), and LkH{alpha} 234 (B8e). About 80 H{alpha} emission sources brighter than V~23 are identified in the region, many of which are presumably T Tauri star members of the cluster. We also present deep (V~23), optical (VR_C_I_C_) photometry of a field centered on the reflection nebula and spectral types for more than 130 sources determined from low dispersion, optical spectroscopy. The narrow pre-main sequence evident in the color-magnitude diagram suggests that star formation was rapid and coeval. A median age of about 1.8Myr is inferred for the H{alpha} and literature-identified X-ray emission sources having established spectral types, using pre-main sequence evolutionary models. Our interpretation of the structure of the molecular cloud and the distribution of young stellar objects is that BD+65{deg}1638 is primarily responsible for evacuating the blister-like cavity within the molecular cloud. LkH{alpha} 234 and several embedded sources evident in near-infrared adaptive optics imaging have formed recently within the ridge of compressed molecular gas. The compact cluster of low-mass stars formed concurrently with the early-type members, concentrated within a central radius of ~0.7pc. Star formation is simultaneously occurring in a semi-circular arc some ~3pc in radius that outlines remaining dense regions of molecular gas. High dispersion, optical spectra are presented for BD+65{deg}1638, BD+65{deg}1637, SVS 13, LkH{alpha} 234, and V350 Cep. These spectra are discussed in the context of the circumstellar environments inferred for these stars.

- We present the analysis and results of a new VRI photometric and spectroscopic survey of the central ~1.8x1.2Mpc^2^ region of the galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We detect the presence of two dominant clumps of galaxies with a mass ratio of ~5: a main cluster centred on the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) (A3921-A), and an NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster galaxy. The distorted morphology of the two sub-clusters suggests that they are interacting, while the velocity distribution of 104 confirmed cluster members does not reveal strong signatures of merging.

- Near-infrared spectra were obtained for 117 red giants in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the FORS1 spectrograph on the VLT, in order to study the metallicity distribution of the stars and to lift the age-metallicity degeneracy of the red giant branch (RGB) in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Metallicities are derived from the equivalent widths of the infrared calcium triplet lines at 8498, 8542, and 8662{AA} calibrated with data from globular clusters, the open cluster M67, and the LMC. For a substantial portion of the sample, the strength of the calcium triplet is unexpectedly high, clearly indicating that the main stellar population of Fornax is significantly more metal-rich than could be inferred from the position of its RGB in the CMD.

- We present results from a survey of weak MgII absorbers in the VLT/UVES spectra of 81 QSOs obtained from the ESO archive. In this survey, we identified 112 weak MgII systems within the redshift interval 0.4<z<2.4 with 86% completeness down to a rest-frame equivalent width of Wr(2796)=0.02{AA}, overing a cumulative redshift path length of {DELTA}Z~77.3.

- Wilson & Bappu (1957ApJ...125..661W) have shown the existence of a remarkable correlation between the width of the emission in the core of the K line of CaII and the absolute visual magnitude of late-type stars. Here we present a new calibration of the Wilson-Bappu effect based on a sample of 119 nearby stars. We use, for the first time, width measurements based on high resolution and high signal to noise ratio CCD spectra and absolute visual magnitudes from the Hipparcos database.

- Through the modeling of near-infrared photometry of star-plus disk systems with the codes BEDISK/BERAY, we successfully describe the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometric characteristics of Be stars in five young open clusters, NGC 663, NGC 869, NGC 884, NGC 3766, and NGC 4755, broadly studied in the literature. WISE photometry allows previously known Be stars to be detected and to find new Be candidates which could be confirmed spectroscopically. The location of Be stars in the WISE color-magnitude diagram, separates them in two groups; active (Be stars hosting a developed circumstellar disk) and quiescent objects (Be stars in a diskless phase), and this way, we can explore how often stars are observed in these different stages. The variability observed in most active variable Be stars is compatible with a disk dissipation phase. We find that 50% of Be stars in the studied open clusters are in an active phase. We can interpret this as Be stars having a developed circumstellar disk one-half of the time. The location of Be stars with a developed disk in the color-magnitude diagram require mass loss rates in agreement with values recently reported in the literature. For these objects, we expect to have a tight relation between the equivalent width of the H{alpha} line and the mass of the disk, if the inclination is known. Also, near-infrared photometry of Be stars in stellar clusters has the potential of being useful to test whether there is a preferential viewing angle.

- WIYN/Hydra spectroscopy (at R~15000) of the moderately metal-rich Praesepe and Hyades open clusters was used to study their main-sequence (MS) iron ([Fe/H]) and lithium (A(Li)) abundances. Self-consistent [Fe/H] and Li analyses of these clusters of consistent age, which we re-evaluate, confirms that they have consistent [Fe/H] and provides a foundation to investigate the poorly understood G-dwarf and F-dwarf Li-depletions. Neither phenomenon agrees with standard stellar evolution theory, but possible explanations abound. We supplement our A(Li) with previously published results placed on a uniform abundance scale. This creates the largest self-consistently analyzed sample of A(Li) in both the Hyades (90) and Praesepe (110). For each star, high-precision UBVRI photometry was used to determine a 10-color-based T_eff_ and then to test for photometric peculiarities indicated by a large {sigma}_Teff_ (>75 K). The stars that have large {sigma}_Teff_ were predominantly found to be binaries or stars with peculiar (apparent) A(Li). When considering only proper-motion members that have low {sigma}_Teff_ and are also photometrically consistent with the cluster MS fiducial, each cluster has a more tightly defined Li morphology than previously observed and the two clusters' A(Li) are indistinguishable. This suggests that clusters of consistent age and metallicity may have consistent Li-depletion trends across a broad range of T_eff_; no additional major parameters are required, at least for these two clusters. We propose that the combined Hyades and Praesepe data offer more rigorous constraints than does either cluster alone, and we discuss newly revealed features of the combined Li-T_eff_ trend.

- HYDRA spectra of 287 stars in the field of NGC 2506 from the turnoff through the giant branch are analyzed. With previous data, 22 are identified as probable binaries; 90 more are classified as potential non-members. Spectroscopic analyses of ~60 red giants and slowly rotating turnoff stars using line equivalent widths and a neural network approach lead to [Fe/H]=-0.27+/-0.07 (s.d.) and [Fe/H]=-0.27+/-0.06 (s.d.), respectively. Li abundances are derived for 145 probable single-star members, 44 being upper limits. Among turnoff stars outside the Li-dip, A(Li)=3.04+/-0.16 (s.d.), with no trend with color, luminosity, or rotation speed. Evolving from the turnoff across the subgiant branch, there is a well-delineated decline to A(Li)~1.25 at the giant branch base, coupled with the rotational spindown from between ~20 and 70 km/s to less than 20 km/s for stars entering the subgiant branch and beyond. A(Li) remains effectively constant from the giant branch base to the red giant clump level. A new member above the clump redefines the path of the first-ascent red giant branch; its Li is 0.6 dex below the first-ascent red giants. With one exception, all post-He-flash stars have upper limits to A(Li), at or below the level of the brightest first-ascent red giant. The patterns are in excellent qualitative agreement with the model predictions for low/intermediate-mass stars which undergo rotation-induced mixing at the turnoff and subgiant branch, first dredge-up, and thermohaline mixing beyond the red giant bump.

- Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are evolved massive stars, and the relative number of WC-type and WN-type WRs should vary with the metallicity of the host galaxy, providing a sensitive test of stellar evolutionary theory. However, past studies of the WR content of M31 have been biased toward detecting WC stars, as their emission-line signatures are much stronger than those of WNs. Here, we present the results of a survey covering all of M31's optical disk (2.2deg^2^), with sufficient sensitivity to detect the weaker-lined WN types. We identify 107 newly found WR stars, mostly of WN type. This brings the total number of spectroscopically confirmed WRs in M31 to 154, a number we argue is complete to ~95%, except in regions of unusually high reddening. This number is consistent with what we expect from the integrated H{alpha} luminosity compared to that of M33. The majority of these WRs formed in OB associations around the Population I ring, although 5% are truly isolated. Both the relative number of WC- to WN-type stars as well as the WC subtype distribution suggest that most WRs exist in environments with higher-than-solar metallicities, which is consistent with studies of M31's metallicity. Although the WC to WN ratio we find for M31 is much lower than that found by previous studies, it is still higher than what the Geneva evolutionary models predict. This may suggest that Roche-lobe overflow produces the excess of WC stars observed at high metallicity, or that the assumed rotational velocities in the models are too high.
