- Description:
- Massive star-forming regions are characterized by intense ionizing fluxes, strong stellar winds and, occasionally, supernovae explosions, all of which have important effects on the surrounding media, on the star-formation process and on the evolution of young stars and their circumstellar disks. We present a multiband study of the massive young cluster NGC 6611 and its parental cloud (the Eagle Nebula) with the aim of studying how OB stars affect the early stellar evolution and the formation of other stars. We search for evidence of triggering of star formation by the massive stars inside NGC 6611 on a large spatial scale (~10 parsec) and ongoing disk photoevaporation in NGC 6611 and how its efficiency depends on the mass of the central stars.

- Stellar population of the young star cluster NGC 6231

- Description:
- NGC 6231 is a young cluster (age ~2-7 Myr) dominating the Sco OB1 association (distance ~1.59 kpc) with ~100 O and B stars and a large pre-main-sequence stellar population. We combine a reanalysis of archival Chandra X-ray data with multiepoch near-infrared (NIR) photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey and published optical catalogs to obtain a catalog of 2148 probable cluster members. This catalog is 70% larger than previous censuses of probable cluster members in NGC 6231. It includes many low-mass stars detected in the NIR but not in the optical and some B stars without previously noted X-ray counterparts. In addition, we identify 295 NIR variables, about half of which are expected to be pre-main-sequence stars. With the more complete sample, we estimate a total population in the Chandra field of 5700-7500 cluster members down to 0.08 M_{sun}_ (assuming a universal initial mass function) with a completeness limit at 0.5 M_{sun}_. A decrease in stellar X-ray luminosities is noted relative to other younger clusters. However, within the cluster, there is little variation in the distribution of X-ray luminosities for ages less than 5 Myr. The X-ray spectral hardness for B stars may be useful for distinguishing between early-B stars with X-rays generated in stellar winds and B-star systems with X-rays from a pre-main-sequence companion (>35% of B stars). A small fraction of catalog members have unusually high X-ray median energies or reddened NIR colors, which might be explained by absorption from thick or edge-on disks or being background field stars.

- Stellar rotation in M35

- Description:
- We present the results of a five month photometric time-series survey for stellar rotation over a 40'x40' field centered on the 150Myr open cluster M35 (=NGC 2168). We report rotation periods for 441 stars within this field and determine their cluster membership and binarity based on a decade-long radial velocity survey, proper-motion measurements, and multiband photometric observations. We find that 310 of the stars with measured rotation periods are late-type members of M35. The distribution of rotation periods for cluster members span more than 2 orders of magnitude from ~0.1 to 15 days, not constrained by the sampling frequency and the timespan of the survey. With an age between the zero-age main sequence and the Hyades, and with ~6 times more rotation periods than measured in the Pleiades, M35 permit detailed studies of early rotational evolution of late-type stars. Nearly 80% of the 310 rotators lie on two distinct sequences in the color-period plane, and define clear relations between stellar rotation period and color (mass). The M35 color-period diagram enables us to determine timescales for the transition between the two rotational states, of ~60Myr and ~140Myr for G and K dwarfs, respectively.

- Stock 2 CCD photometry and proper motions

- Description:
- We present the results of the first CCD BVRI photometric and proper motion study of late-type stars in the young open cluster Stock 2. Twenty-one fields of approximately 5'x5' size have been observed photometrically, from which we have identified 118 candidate members based on their positions on colour-magnitude diagrams relative to theoretical isochrones. From a comparison of the known star density of the Pleiades, we estimate the contamination of this selection process due to background stars to be as large as ~50%. However, only 22 of those 118 candidate members have proper motions consistent with membership, suggesting that the contamination is of the order of 80%. Additional candidate members were found by means of a proper motion analysis of Schmidt plate material for a 3{deg}x3{ deg} field containing the cluster. The cluster proper motion allows us to separate members from background and foreground stars. We have found 634 stars with a membership probability >=50% down to a limiting magnitude of B=~20, corresponding to late-M dwarfs at the distance of Stock 2.

- Swift UVOT Stars Survey. III. Galactic open clusters

- Description:
- As part of the Swift/Ultraviolet-Optical Telescope Stars Survey, we present near-ultraviolet (NUV; 3000-1700 {AA}) point-source photometry for 103 Galactic open clusters. These data, taken over the span of the mission, provide a unique and unprecedented set of NUV point-source photometry on simple stellar populations. After applying a membership analysis fueled mostly by Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345) proper motions, we find that 49 of these 103 have clear precise color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) amenable to investigation. We compare the CMDs to theoretical isochrones and find good agreement between the theoretical isochrones and the CMDs. The exceptions are the fainter parts of the main sequence and the red giant branch in the uvw2-uvw1 CMDs, which is most likely due to either the difficulty of correcting for the red leak in the uvw2 filter or limitations in our understanding of UV opacities for cool stars. For the most part, our derived cluster parameters - age, distance, and reddening - agree with the consensus literature, but we find a few clusters that warrant substantial revision from literature values, notably NGC 2304, NGC 2343, NGC 2360, NGC 2396, NGC 2428, NGC 2509, NGC 2533, NGC 2571, NGC 2818, Collinder 220, and NGC 6939. A number of these are clusters in the third Galactic quadrant, where previous studies may have mistaken the disk sequence for the cluster. However, the Gaia DR2 proper motions clearly favor a different sequence. A number of clusters also show white dwarf and blue straggler sequences. We confirm the presence of extended main-sequence turnoffs in NGC 2360 and NGC 2818 and show hints of them in a number of other clusters that may warrant future spectroscopic study. Most of the clusters in the study have low extinction, and the rest are well fit by a "Milky Way-like" extinction law. However, Collinder 220 hints at a possible "LMC-like" extinction law. We finally provide a comprehensive point-source catalog to the community as a tool for future investigation.

- The edge of the young Galactic disk

- Description:
- In this work, we report and discuss the detection of two distant diffuse stellar groups in the third Galactic quadrant. They are composed of young stars, with spectral types ranging from late O to late B, and lie at galactocentric distances between 15 and 20kpc. These groups are located in the area of two cataloged open clusters (VdB-Hagen 04 and Ruprecht 30), projected toward the Vela-Puppis constellations, and within the core of the Canis Major overdensity. Their reddening and distances have been estimated by analyzing their color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, derived from deep UBV photometry. The existence of young star aggregates at such extreme distances from the Galactic center challenges the commonly accepted scenario in which the Galactic disk has a sharp cutoff at about 14kpc from the Galactic center and indicates that it extends to much greater distances (as also supported by the recent detection of CO molecular complexes well beyond this distance). While the groups we find in the area of Ruprecht 30 are compatible with the Orion and Norma-Cygnus spiral arms, respectively, the distant group we identify in the region of VdB-Hagen 04 lies in the external regions of the Norma-Cygnus arm, at a galactocentric distance (~20kpc) where no young stars have been detected so far in the optical.

- The ionizing cluster of 30 Doradus. I.
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/341/98

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- UBV profile fitting photometry is presented for 1469 stars within 90arcsec of the center of the ionizing cluster of 30 Doradus (NGC 2070). A value of 0.82+/-0.03 is found for the extinction parameter S=E(U-B)/E(B-V), constant over almost the whole area covered by this research, with some evidence for local variations. Two reddening components can be identified: a smooth and moderate one that increases towards R136, and a clumpy one varying widely across the face of the cluster. The total-to-selective extinction parameter, R_V_= A_V_/E(B-V), is found to be in the range of 3.0 to 3.7, consistent with previous determinations. A new visualization tool, the colour-magnitude stereogram, is introduced and used to argue that: (1) the observations imply mass segregation in a dust filled cluster; (2) that there has been continuous dust formation near the cluster core up to the present; and (3) that an insidious systematic error has plagued previous determinations of IMF slopes. A method to obtain an unbiased estimate of the slope is discussed.

- Description:
- Young open clusters located in the outer Galaxy provide us with an opportunity to study star formation activity in a different environment from the solar neighborhood. We present a UBVI and H{alpha} photometric study of the young open clusters NGC 1624 and NGC 1931 that are situated toward the Galactic anticenter. Various photometric diagrams are used to select the members of the clusters and to determine the fundamental parameters. NGC 1624 and NGC 1931 are, on average, reddened by <E(B-V)>=0.92+/-0.05 and 0.74+/-0.17mag, respectively. The properties of the reddening toward NGC 1931 indicate an abnormal reddening law (R_V,cl_=5.2+/-0.3). Using the zero-age main sequence fitting method we confirm that NGC 1624 is 6.0+/-0.6kpc away from the Sun, whereas NGC 1931 is at a distance of 2.3+/-0.2kpc. The results from isochrone fitting in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram indicate the ages of NGC 1624 and NGC 1931 to be less than 4 and 1.5-2.0Myr, respectively. We derived the initial mass function (IMF) of the clusters. The slope of the IMF ({Gamma}_NGC1624_=-2.0+/-0.2 and {Gamma}_NGC1931_=-2.0+/-0.1) appears to be steeper than that of the Salpeter/Kroupa IMF. We discuss the implication of the derived IMF based on simple Monte-Carlo simulations and conclude that the property of star formation in the clusters does not seem to be significantly different from that in the solar neighborhood.

- Description:
- Young open clusters are ideal laboratories to understand the star formation process. We present deep UBVI and H{alpha} photometry for the young open cluster IC1590 in the center of the HII region NGC281. Early-type members are selected from UBV photometric diagrams, and low-mass pre-main-sequence (PMS) members are identified by using H{alpha} photometry. In addition, the published X-ray source list and Gaia astrometric data are also used to isolate probable members. A total of 408 stars are selected as members. The mean reddening obtained from early-type members is <E(B-V)>=0.40{+/-}0.06(s.d.). We confirm the abnormal extinction law for the intracluster medium. The distance modulus to the cluster determined from the zero-age main-sequence fitting method is 12.3{+/-}0.2mag (d=2.88{+/-}0.28kpc), which is consistent with the distance d=2.70_-0.20_^+0.24^kpc from the recent Gaia parallaxes. We also estimate the ages and masses of individual members by means of stellar evolutionary models. The mode of the age of PMS stars is about 0.8Myr. The initial mass function of IC1590 is derived. It appears to be a steeper shape ({Gamma}=-1.49{+/-}0.14) than that of the Salpeter/Kroupa initial mass function for the high-mass regime (m>1M{sun}). The signature of mass segregation is detected from the difference in the slopes of the initial mass functions for the inner (r<2.5') and outer regions of this cluster. We finally discuss the star formation history in NGC281.
