- The mysterious high Galactic latitude cometary globule CG 12 has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. We detect 128 X-ray sources, of which half are likely young stars formed within the globule's head. This new population of >~50 T Tauri stars and one new embedded protostar is far larger than the previously reported few intermediate-mass and two protostellar members of the cloud.

- We present results from an X-ray imaging survey of the young cluster NGC 2264, carried out with the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) on board the XMM-Newton spacecraft. The X-ray data are merged with extant optical and near-infrared photometry, spectral classifications, Halpha emission strengths, and rotation periods to examine the interrelationships between coronal and chromospheric activity, rotation, stellar mass, and internal structure for a statistically significant sample of pre-main-sequence stars. A total of 300 distinct X-ray sources can be identified with optical or near-infrared counterparts. The sources are concentrated within three regions of the cluster: in the vicinity of S Mon, within the large emission/reflection nebulosity southwest of S Mon, and along the broad ridge of molecular gas that extends from the Cone Nebula to the NGC 2264 IRS 2 field.

- Using XMM-Newton data, we study for the first time the X-ray emission of HM1 and IC2944/2948. Low-mass, pre-main sequence objects with an age of a few Myr are detected, as well as a few background or foreground objects. Most massive stars in both clusters display the usual high-energy properties of that kind of objects, though with log(Lx/Lbol) apparently lower in HM1 than in IC2944/2948. Comparing with studies of other clusters, it seems that low S/N at soft energies, due to the high extinction, may the main cause of this difference. In HM1, the two Wolf-Rayet stars show contrasting behaviours: WR89 is extremely bright, but much softer than WR87. It remains to be seen whether wind-wind collisions or magnetically confined winds can explain such emissions. In IC2944/2948, the X-ray sources concentrate around HD101205; a group of massive stars to the north of this object appears rather isolated, suggesting that there exist two subclusters in the field-of-view.

- The origin and evolution of the X-ray emission in very young stellar objects (YSOs) are not yet well understood because it is very hard to observe YSOs in the protostellar phase. Using COUP data, we study the X-ray properties of stars in the ONC in different evolutionary classes: luminosities, hydrogen column densities N_H_, effective plasma temperatures, and time variability are compared to understand if the interaction between the circumstellar material and the central object can influence the X-ray emission. We have assembled the deepest and most complete photometric catalog of objects in the ONC region from the UV to 8um using data from the HST Treasury Program; deep and almost simultaneous UBVI and JHK images taken, respectively, with WFI at ESO 2.2m and ISPI at CTIO 4m telescopes; and Spitzer IRAC imaging. We select high-probability candidate Class 0-I protostars, a sample of "bona fide" Class II stars, and a set of Class III stars with IR emission consistent with normal photospheres. Our principal result is that Class 0-Ia objects are significantly less luminous in X-rays, in both the total and hard bands, than the more evolved Class II stars with mass larger than 0.5M_{sun}_; the latter show X-ray luminosities similar to those of Class 0-Ib stars.

- The young stellar cluster illuminating the W40 HII region, one of the nearest massive star-forming regions, has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Due to its high obscuration, this is a poorly studied stellar cluster with only a handful of bright stars visible in the optical band, including three OB stars identified as primary excitation sources. We detect 225 X-ray sources, of which 85% are confidently identified as young stellar members of the region. Two potential distances of the cluster, 260pc and 600pc, are used in the paper.

- A recent observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster with the ACIS instrument on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory detected 1075 sources, 525 of which are pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars with measured bulk properties such as bolometric luminosities, masses, ages, and disk indicators. Nearly half of these stars have photometrically measured rotational periods. This provides a uniquely large and well-defined sample to study the dependence of magnetic activity on bulk properties for stars descending the Hayashi tracks.

- We present a detailed investigation of X-ray source contents of eight young open clusters with ages between 4 to 46Myr using archival X-ray data from XMM-Newton. The probable cluster memberships of the X-ray sources have been established on the basis of multi-wavelength archival data, and samples of 152 pre-main sequence (PMS) low mass (<2M_{sun}_), 36 intermediate mass (2-10M_{sun}_) and 16 massive (>10M_{sun}_) stars have been generated. X-ray spectral analyses of high mass stars reveal the presence of high temperature plasma with temperature <2keV, and mean L_X_/L_bol_ of 10^-6.9^. In the case of PMS low mass stars, the plasma temperatures have been found to be in the range of 0.2keV to 3keV with a median value of ~1.3keV, with no significant difference in plasma temperatures during their evolution from 4 to 46Myr. The X-ray luminosity distributions of the PMS low mass stars have been found to be similar in the young star clusters under study. This may suggest a nearly uniform X-ray activity in the PMS low mass stars of ages ~4--14Myr. These observed values of L_X)/L_bol_ are found to have a mean value of 10^-3.6^+/-0.4, which is below the X-ray saturation level. The L_X_/L_bol_ values for the PMS low mass stars are well correlated with their bolometric luminosities, that implies its dependence on the internal structure of the low mass stars. The difference between the X-ray luminosity distributions of the intermediate mass stars and the PMS low mass stars has not been found to be statistically significant. Their L_X_/L_bol_ values, however have been found to be significantly different from each other with a confidence level greater than 99.999% and the strength of X-ray activity in the intermediate mass stars is found to be lower compared to the low mass stars. However, the possibility of X-ray emission from the intermediate mass stars due to a low mass star in close proximity of the intermediate mass star can not be ruled out.

- We have obtained a deep (53 ks) X-ray image of the very young stellar cluster IC 348 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. In our image with a sensitivity limit of ~1x10^28^ergs/s (more than 10 times deeper than our ROSAT images of IC 348), 215 X-ray sources are detected. While 115 of these sources can be identified with known cluster members, 58 X-ray sources are most likely new, still unidentified cluster members. About 80% of all known cluster members with masses between ~0.15 and 2M_{sun}_ are visible as X-ray sources in our image. We discover X-ray emission at levels of ~10^28^ergs/s from four of 13 known brown dwarfs and from three of 12 brown dwarf candidates in IC 348. We also detect X-ray emission from two deeply embedded objects, presumably class I protostars, south of the cluster center. Description:

- I present the analysis results from XMM-Newton observations of the old open stellar cluster NGC 188, which has an age of about 7Gyr and a near solar metallicity. 58 X-ray sources were detected in the field of view of the EPIC MOS and PN cameras, and 46 sources are new X-ray detections. Visible counterparts were found for 20 sources including the variable star WV 28, the W UMa-type binaries V371 Cep and V372 Cep, and the red giant V11. 9 X-ray sources are identified with probable cluster non-members, while 43 X-ray sources are of unknown membership. X-ray emission was detected from 6 stars with high membership probability above a luminosity threshold of 10^30^erg/s.

- While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8x10^8yr) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. We analysed a ~140ks Chandraobservation of NGC 752 and a ~50ks XMM-Newtonobservation of the same cluster. We detected 262 X-ray sources in the Chandra data and 145 sources in the XMM-Newton observation. Around 90% of the catalogued cluster members within Chandra's field-of-view are detected in the X-ray. The X-ray luminosity of all observed cluster members (28 stars) and of 11 cluster member candidates was derived.
