- We report the results of an [O III]{lambda}5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PNs) in three spiral galaxies: M101 (NGC 5457), M51 (NGC 5194/5l95), and M96 (NGC 3368). By comparing on-band/off-band [O III]{lambda}5007 images with images taken in H{alpha} and broadband R. we identify 65, 64, and 74 PN candidates in each galaxy, respectively. From these data, an adopted M31 distance of 770kpc, and the empirical planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), we derive distances to M101, M51, and M96 of 7.7+/-0.5, 8.4+/-0.6, and 9.6+/-0.6Mpc. These observations demonstrate that the PNLF technique can be successfully applied to late-type galaxies and can provide an important overlap between the Population I and Population II distance scales. We also discuss some special problems associated with using the PNLF in spiral galaxies, including the effects of dust and the possible presence of [O III] bright supernova remnants.

- As the second step in our investigation of the mass-to-light ratio of spiral disks, we present the results of a spectroscopic survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in five nearby, low-inclination galaxies: IC 342, M74 (NGC 628), M83 (NGC 5236), M94 (NGC 4736), and M101 (NGC 5457). Using 50 setups of the WIYN/Hydra and Blanco/Hydra spectrographs, and 25 observations with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope's Medium Resolution Spectrograph, we determine the radial velocities of 99, 102, 162, 127, and 48 PNe, respectively, to a precision better than 15km/s. Although the main purpose of this data set is to facilitate dynamical mass measurements throughout the inner and outer disks of large spiral galaxies, our spectroscopy has other uses as well. Here, we co-add these spectra to show that, to first order, the [OIII] and Balmer line ratios of PNe vary little over the top ~1.5mag of the PN luminosity function.

- We present a catalog of planetary nebulae in the nearest giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. The catalog consists of positions and [O III]{lambda}5007 magnitudes for 785 planetary nebulae. This is the second largest catalog of planetaries, next only to that of the Milky Way. We also list the coordinates of 32 bright stars from the Guide Star Catalog and 80 additional reference stars in the survey fields for astrometric reference during future observations. The positions of the planetary nebulae are accurate to 0.2" with respect to the Guide Star Catalog in right ascension or declination.

- The 1.4GHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) images and source catalog were used to detect radio emission from the 885 planetary nebulae north of J2000 declination {delta}=-40{deg} in the Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (Cat. <V/84>). We identified 680 radio sources brighter than about S=2.5mJy/beam (equivalent to T~0.8K in the 45" FWHM NVSS beam) with planetary nebulae by coincidence with accurate optical positions measured from Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) images. Total extinction coefficients c at {lambda}=4861{AA} were calculated for the 429 planetary nebulae with available H{beta} fluxes and low free-free optical depths at 1.4GHz. The variation of c with Galactic latitude and longitude is consistent with the extinction being primarily interstellar and not intrinsic.

- We present the result of an [OIII]500.7nm survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in three galaxies of the Coma I group: NGC 4278 (Hubble type E1), NGC 4494 (E1), and NGC 4565 (edge-on Sb). Using the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), we derived distances to NGC 4494 (12.8+/-0.9Mpc), NGC 4564 (10.5^+0.8^_-1.0_Mpc), and NGC 4278 (10.2^+0.7^_-1.0_Mpc). The larger distance for NGC 4494 is significant beyond the 99% confidence level when the common systematic errors in all three distances are removed. This agrees with the results of the globular cluster luminosity function and surface brightness fluctuation methods, both of which place NGC 4565 in front of NGC 4494. The large separation is also consistent with the results of Virgocentric flow models, which predict triple-valued solutions to the Hubble flow in that direction.

- Using a slitless spectroscopy method with the 8.2m Subaru telescope and its FOCAS Cassegrain spectrograph, we have increased the number of planetary nebula (PN) detections and PN velocity measurements in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 821. A comparison with the detections reported previously by the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph group indicates that we have confirmed most of their detections. The velocities measured by the two groups, using different telescopes, spectrographs, and slitless techniques, are in good agreement. We have built a combined sample of 167 PNs and have confirmed the Keplerian decline of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion reported previously. We also confirm misaligned rotation from the combined sample. A dark matter halo may exist around this galaxy, but it is not needed to keep the PN velocities below the local escape velocity as calculated from the visible mass. We have measured the m(5007) magnitudes of 145 PNs and produced a statistically complete sample of 40 PNs in NGC 821. The resulting PN luminosity function (PNLF) was used to estimate a distance modulus of 31.4mag, equivalent to 19Mpc.

- Using a slitless spectroscopy method with (1) the 8.2m Subaru telescope and its FOCAS Cassegrain spectrograph and (2) the ESO Very Large Telescope unit 1 (Antu) and its FORS2 Cassegrain spectrograph, we have detected 326 planetary nebulae (PNs) in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M60) and measured their radial velocities. After rejecting some PNs more likely to belong to the companion galaxy NGC 4647, we have built a catalog with kinematic information for 298 PNs in M60. Using these radial velocities, we have concluded that they support the presence of a dark matter halo around M60. Based on an isotropic, two-component Hernquist model, we estimate the dark matter halo mass within 3R_e_ to be 4x10^11^M_{sun}_, which is almost one-half of the total mass of about 10^12^M_{sun}_ within 3R_e_. This total mass is similar to that estimated from globular cluster, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations. The dark matter becomes dominant outside. More detailed dynamical modeling of the PN data is being published in a companion paper. We have also measured the m(5007) magnitudes of many of these PNs and built a statistically complete sample of 218 PNs. The resulting PN luminosity function (PNLF) was used to estimate a distance modulus of 30.7+/-0.2mag, equivalent to 14+/-1Mpc. This confirms an earlier PNLF distance measurement based on a much smaller sample. The PNLF distance modulus remains smaller than the surface brightness fluctuation distance modulus by 0.4mag.

- We present a detailed study of the binary central star of the planetary nebula ETHOS 1 (PN G068.1+11.0). Simultaneous modelling of light and radial velocity curves reveals the binary to comprise a hot and massive pre-white-dwarf with an M-type main-sequence companion. A good fit to the observations was found with a companion that follows expected mass-temperature-radius relationships for low-mass stars, indicating that despite being highly irradiated it is consistent with not being significantly hotter or larger than a typical star of the same mass. Previous modelling indicated that ETHOS 1 may comprise the first case where the orbital plane of the central binary does not lie perpendicular to the nebular symmetry axis, at odds with the expectation that the common envelope is ejected in the orbital plane. We find no evidence for such a discrepancy, deriving a binary inclination in agreement with that of the nebula as determined by spatio-kinematic modelling. This makes ETHOS 1 the ninth post-common-envelope planetary nebula in which the binary orbital and nebular symmetry axes have been shown to be aligned, with as yet no known counter-examples. The probability of finding such a correlation by chance is now less than 0.00002%.

- We present the discovery and characterisation of the post-common-envelope central star system in the planetary nebula PN G283.7-05.1. Deep images taken as part of the POPIPlaN survey indicate that the nebula may possess a bipolar morphology similar to other post-common-envelope planetary nebulae. Simultaneous light and radial velocity curve modelling reveals the newly discovered binary system to comprise a highly-irradiated, M-type main-sequence star in a 5.9 hour orbit with a hot pre-white-dwarf. The nebular progenitor is found to have a particularly low mass of around 0.4M_{sun}_, making PN G283.7-05.1 one of only a handful of candidate planetary nebulae to be the product of a common-envelope event while still on the red giant branch. Beyond its low mass, the model temperature, surface gravity and luminosity are all found to be consistent with the observed stellar and nebular spectra through comparison with model atmospheres and photoionisation modelling. However, the high temperature (Teff~95kK) and high luminosity of the central star of the nebula are not consistent with post-RGB evolutionary tracks.
