- We present a drift-scan survey covering a ~5{deg}x5{deg} region toward the southern portion of the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Data taken in the B,R,I filters with the Quest-2 camera on the Palomar 48 inch (1.2m) Samuel Oschin Telescope were combined with Two Micron All Sky Survey near-infrared photometry to select candidate young stars. Follow-up optical spectroscopy of 190 candidates led to the identification of 42 new low-mass pre-main-sequence stars with spectral types M4-M8, of which approximately half exhibit surface gravity signatures similar to known Taurus stars, while the other half exhibit surface gravity signatures similar to members of the somewhat older Upper Scorpius, TW Hya, and Pic associations.

- We conducted deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging observations of Orion molecular clouds 2 and 3 using the Quick Infrared Camera on the 88 inch (2.2m) telescope of the University of Hawaii. Our purposes were (1) to generate a comprehensive NIR source catalog of these star-forming clouds and (2) to identify the NIR counterpart of the Chandra X-ray sources that have no counterpart in the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) catalog. Our J-, H-, and K-band observations are ~2mag deeper than those of 2MASS and match the current Chandra observation well. We detected 1448 NIR sources, for which we derived the position, the J-, H-, and K-band magnitude, and the 2MASS counterpart. Using this catalog, we identified the NIR counterpart for ~42% of the 2MASS unidentified Chandra sources. The nature of these Chandra sources are discussed using their NIR colors and spatial distributions, and a dozen protostar and brown dwarf candidates are identified.

- To search for thermal emission from substellar companions, we have obtained Z-band images of 15 weak-lined T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus star-forming regions using the Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. To complement the imaging program, extensive spectroscopic observations were obtained with the Center for Astrophysics Digital Speedometers.

- With the advent of high-resolution infrared spectrographs, radial velocity (RV) searches enter into a new domain. As of today, the most important technical question to address is which wavelength reference is the most suitable for high-precision RV measurements. In this work we use atmospheric absorption features as wavelength reference on CRIRES data obtained on two programs and three different targets. We analyzed the data from the TW Hya campaign again, reaching a dispersion of about 6m/s on the RV standard on a time scale of roughly 1 week. We confirm that there is a low-amplitude RV signal on TW Hya itself, with an amplitude roughly 3 times smaller than the one reported at visible wavelengths. We present RV measurements of Gl 86 as well, showing that our approach is capable of detecting the signal induced by a planet and correctly quantifying it. Our data show that CRIRES is capable of reaching an RV precision of less than 10m/s on a time scale of one week. The limitations of this particular approach are discussed, along with the limiting factors on RV precision in the IR in a general way. The implications of this work on the design of future dedicated IR spectrographs are addressed as well.

- The identification and characterisation of low-mass binaries is of importance for a range of astrophysical investigations. Low-mass binaries in young (~10-100Myr) moving groups (YMGs) in the solar neighborhood are of particular significance as they provide unique opportunities to calibrate stellar models and evaluate the ages and coevality of the groups themselves. Low-mass M-dwarfs have pre-main sequence life times on the order of ~100Myr and therefore are continually evolving along a mass-luminosity track throughout the YMG phase, providing ideal laboratories for precise isochronal dating, if a model-independent dynamical mass can be measured. AstraLux lucky imaging multiplicity surveys have recently identified hundreds of new YMG low-mass binaries, where a subsample of M-dwarf multiples have estimated orbital periods less than 50 years. We have conducted a radial velocity survey of a sample of 29 such targets to complement the astrometric data. This will allow enhanced orbital determinations and precise dynamical masses to be derived in a shorter timeframe than possible with astrometric monitoring alone, and allow for a more reliable isochronal analysis. Here we present radial velocity measurements derived for our sample over several epochs. We report the detection of the three-component spectroscopic multiple 2MASS J05301858-5358483, for which the C component is a new discovery, and forms a tight pair with the B component. Originally identified as a YMG member, we find that this system is a likely old field interloper, whose high chromospheric activity level is caused by tidal spin-up of the tight BC pair. Two other triple systems with a tight pair exist in the sample, 2MASS J04244260-0647313 (previously known) and 2MASS J20163382-0711456, but for the rest of the targets we find that additional tidally synchronized companions are highly unlikely, providing further evidence that their high chromospheric activity levels are generally signatures of youth.

- We have used the IRAM 30 m-telescope together with the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) bolometer to survey nearly 270 stars of different types for 250GHz continuum emission. We compare these data with their low frequency (cm-range) properties. Early type stars show very often a deviation from the uniformly expanding wind model which we tentatively attribute to temperature and/or density fluctuations in their deeper atmospheric layers. For WR stars this deviation seems to depend on the effective temperature. Pre-main sequence stars usually seem to be surrounded by a shell of warm dust making a substantial contribution to the 250 GHz flux density value. We have found especially for nearby giants and supergiants that a layer at the transition from photosphere to chromosphere emits ample 250 GHz radiation. We show that the present data can still be explained by a simple uniformly illuminated disk model with the known stellar radius. Optically variable stars are not very strong emitters at 250 GHz. We preferentially detected the more exotic ones, a few Beta Lyr-type and symbiotic stars. Comments on many individual objects are given in the appropriate sections.

- Using the Very Large Array, a sensitive radio survey at 6 and 3.6 cm was carried out in the HH 711 region. The data were acquired in 10 observing runs between 1991 and 1998 with several VLA configurations, and the angular resolutions are about 4-5". A total of 44 radio sources were detected in the 8'x8' region centered at this HH complex. The majority of these sources, at least 26 of them, are believed to be associated with young objects in the cloud.

- We present the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data in a 126 deg^2^ area in and around the CrA star forming region. With low-resolution spectroscopy of unidentified ROSAT sources we could find 19 new pre-main sequence stars, two of which are classical T Tauri stars, the others being weak-lined. The spectral types of these new T Tauri stars range from F7 to M6. The two new classical T Tauri stars are located towards two small cloud-lets outside of the main CrA cloud. They appear to be ~10 Myrs old, by comparing their location in the H-R diagram with isochrones for an assumed distance of 130 pc, the distance of the main CrA dark cloud. The new off-cloud weak-line T Tauri stars may have formed in similar cloudlets, which have dispersed recently. High-resolution spectra of our new T Tauri stars show that they have significantly more lithium absorption than zero-age main-sequence stars of the same spectral type, so that they are indeed young. From those spectra we also obtained rotational and radial velocities. For some stars we found the proper motion in published catalogs. The direction and velocity of the 3D space motion - south relative to the galactic plane - of the CrA T Tauri stars is consistent with the dark cloud being formed originally by a high-velocity cloud impact onto the galactic plane, which triggered the star formation in CrA. We also present VRIJHK photometry for most of the new T Tauri stars to derive their luminosities, ages, and masses.

- We present a catalogue of RcIcZ photometry over an area of 0.855 square degrees, centred on the young open cluster NGC 2547. The survey is substantially complete to limits of Rc=21.5, Ic=19.5, Z=19.5. We use the catalogue to define a sample of NGC 2547 candidates with model-dependent masses of about 0.05-1.0M_{sun}_.

- The results of an ISOCAM survey of the R CrA star formation region are presented. The survey was carried out in two broad-band filters, LW2 (5-8.5{mu}m) and LW3 (12-18{mu}m). Although it was not possible to map the densest, central region due to saturation problems, 21 sources were identified which showed mid-IR excesses. Most of these sources have not previously been recognised as YSOs (Young Stellar Objects), mainly because they are relatively faint. We find evidence for a population of very low mass stars which are probably brown dwarfs in their early contraction phases.
