- We introduce the Pan-Pacific Planet Search, a survey of 170 metal-rich Southern Hemisphere subgiants using the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope. We report the first discovery from this program, a giant planet orbiting 7 CMa (HD 47205) with a period of 763+/-17 days, eccentricity e=0.14+/-0.06, and msin i=2.6+/-0.6M_Jup_. The host star is a K giant with a mass of 1.5+/-0.3M_{sun}_ and metallicity [Fe/H]=0.21+/-0.10. The mass and period of 7 CMa b are typical of planets which have been found to orbit intermediate-mass stars (M_*_>1.3M_{sun}_). Hipparcos photometry shows this star to be stable to 0.0004 mag on the radial-velocity period, giving confidence that this signal can be attributed to reflex motion caused by an orbiting planet.

- The most massive and complex globular clusters in the Galaxy are thought to have originated as the nuclear cores of now tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies, but the connection between globular clusters and dwarf galaxies is tenuous with the M54/Sagittarius system representing the only unambiguous link. The globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega}Cen) is more massive and chemically diverse than M54, and is thought to have been the nuclear star cluster of either the Sequoia or Gaia-Enceladus galaxy. Local Group dwarf galaxies with masses equivalent to these systems often host significant populations of very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-2.5), and one might expect to find such objects in {omega}Cen. Using high-resolution spectra from Magellan-M2FS, we detected 11 stars in a targeted sample of 395 that have [Fe/H] ranging from -2.30 to -2.52. These are the most metal-poor stars discovered in the cluster, and are five times more metal-poor than {omega}Cen's dominant population. However, these stars are not so metal-poor as to be unambiguously linked to a dwarf galaxy origin. The cluster's metal-poor tail appears to contain two populations near [Fe/H]~-2.1 and -2.4, which are very centrally concentrated but do not exhibit any peculiar kinematic signatures. Several possible origins for these stars are discussed.

- Previous studies of the rotation law in the outer Galactic disc have mainly used gas tracers or clump giants. Here, we explore A and F stars as alternatives: these provide a much denser sampling in the outer disc than gas tracers and have experienced significantly less velocity scattering than older clump giants. This first investigation confirms the suitability of A stars in this role. Our work is based on spectroscopy of roughly 1300 photometrically selected stars in the red calcium-triplet region, chosen to mitigate against the effects of interstellar extinction. The stars are located in two low Galactic latitude sightlines, at longitudes l=118{deg}, sampling strong Galactic rotation shear, and l=178{deg}, near the anticentre. With the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo parameter fitting, stellar parameters and radial velocities are measured, and distances computed. The obtained trend of radial velocity with distance is inconsistent with existing flat or slowly rising rotation laws from gas tracers (Brand & Blitz, 1993A&A...275...67B, Cat J/A+A/275/67; Reid et al., 2014ApJ...783..130R, Cat. J/ApJ/783/130). Instead, our results fit in with those obtained by Huang et al. (2016MNRAS.463.2623H) from disc clump giants that favoured rising circular speeds. An alternative interpretation in terms of spiral arm perturbation is not straight forward. We assess the role that undetected binaries in the sample and distance error may have in introducing bias, and show that the former is a minor factor. The random errors in our trend of circular velocity are within +/-5km/s.

- The presence of extreme horizontal branch (EHB) and blue hook stars in some Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) constitutes one of the remaining mysteries of stellar evolution. While several evolutionary scenarios have been proposed to explain the characteristics of this peculiar population of evolved stars, their observational verification has been limited by the availability of spectroscopic data for a statistically significant sample of such objects in any single GGC. In this first paper, we focus on {omega} Centauri, a peculiar, massive GGC that hosts multiple stellar populations. We use non-LTE model atmospheres to derive atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g and N(He)/N(H)) and spectroscopic masses for 152 EHB stars in the cluster. We also search for close binaries among these stars based on radial velocity variations. The majority of our sample consists of sdOB stars that have roughly solar or super-solar atmospheric helium abundances. It is these objects that constitute the blue hook at V>18.5mag in the {omega} Cen colour-magnitude diagram.

- Second only to initial mass, the rate of wind-driven mass loss determines the final mass of a massive star and the nature of its remnant. Motivated by the need to reconcile observational values and theory, we use a recently vetted technique to analyze the mass-loss rates in a sample of OB stars that generate bow shock nebulae. We measure peculiar velocities from new Gaia parallax and proper motion data and their spectral types from new optical and infrared spectroscopy. For our sample of 70 central stars in morphologically selected bow shock nebulae, 67 are OB stars. The median peculiar velocity is 11 km/s, significantly smaller than classical "runaway star" velocities. Mass-loss rates for these O and early B stars agree with recently lowered theoretical predictions, ranging from ~10^-7^ M_{sun}_/yr for mid-O dwarfs to 10^-9^ M_{sun}_/yr for late O dwarfs - a factor of about 2.7 lower than the often-used Vink et al. (2000A&A...362..295V, 2001A&A...369..574V) formulation. Our results provide the first observational mass-loss rates for B0-B3 dwarfs and giants - 10^-9^ to 10^-8^ M_{sun}_/yr. We find evidence for an increase in the mass-loss rates below a critical effective temperature, consistent with predictions of the bistability phenomenon in the range T_eff_=19000-27000 K. The sample exhibits a correlation between modified wind momentum and luminosity, consistent in slope but lower by 0.43 dex in magnitude compared to canonical wind-luminosity relations. We identify a small subset of objects deviating most significantly from theoretical expectations as probable radiation-driven bow wave nebulae by virtue of their low stellar-to-nebular luminosity ratios. For these, the inferred mass-loss rates must be regarded as upper limits.

- As part of our programme to map the large-scale distribution of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we observed 314 optically-selected, partially-obscured galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) in the Crux and Great Attractor (GA) regions. An additional 29 galaxies were observed in the Vela ZOA survey region (because of the small numbers they are not discussed any further). The observations were conducted with the Parkes 64m (210 ft) radio telescope, in a single-pixel pointed mode, reaching an rms noise level of typically 2-6mJy over the velocity search range of 400<v<10500km/s. A total of 162 galaxies were detected (plus 14 galaxies in the Vela region). The detection rate is slightly higher than for the Hydra/Antlia region (52% versus 45%) observed in the same way.

- The Kepler telescope has discovered over 4000 planets (candidates) by searching ~200000 stars over a wide range of distance (order of kpc) in our Galaxy. Characterizing the kinematic properties (e.g., Galactic component membership and kinematic age) of these Kepler targets (including the planet candidate hosts) is the first step toward studying Kepler planets in the Galactic context, which will reveal fresh insights into planet formation and evolution. In this paper, the second part of the Planets Across the Space and Time (PAST) series, by combining the data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) and Gaia and then applying the revised kinematic methods from PAST I, we present a catalog of kinematic properties (i.e., Galactic positions, velocities, and the relative membership probabilities among the thin disk, thick disk, Hercules stream, and the halo) as well as other basic stellar parameters for 35835 Kepler stars. Further analyses of the LAMOST-Gaia-Kepler catalog demonstrate that our derived kinematic age reveals the expected stellar activity-age trend. Furthermore, we find that the fraction of thin (thick) disk stars increases (decreases) with the transiting planet multiplicity (N_p_=0,1,2 and3+) and the kinematic age decreases with N_p_, which could be a consequence of the dynamical evolution of planetary architecture with age. The LAMOST-Gaia-Kepler catalog will be useful for future studies on the correlations between the exoplanet distributions and the stellar Galactic environments as well as ages.

- We search for hints to the origin and nature of compact stellar systems in the magnitude range of ultracompact dwarf galaxies in deep wide-field imaging data of the Fornax cluster core. We visually investigate a large sample of 355 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members with V-band equivalent magnitudes brighter than -10mag for faint extended structures. Our data reveal peculiar compact stellar systems, which appear asymmetric or elongated from their outer light distribution. We characterize the structure of our objects by quantifying their core concentration, as well as their outer asymmetry and ellipticity. For the brighter objects of our sample we also investigate their spatial and phase-space distribution within the cluster. We argue that the distorted outer structure alone that is seen for some of our objects, is not sufficient to decide whether these systems have a star cluster or a galaxy origin. However, we find that objects with low core concentration and high asymmetry (or high ellipticity) are primarily located at larger cluster-centric distances as compared to the entire sample. This supports the hypothesis that at least some of these objects may originate from tidally stripped galaxies.

- An H I cloud with a double-lobed structure and a radial velocity of +50km/s has been found near l=92{deg}, b=-4{deg} in a low-resolution H I survey carried out at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO). This velocity is forbidden for circular Galactic rotation. Because of its unusual morphology and small variation in radial velocity over the cloud, further observations of the area were made with the DRAO Synthesis Telescope, both in the H I line and in the radio continuum. The cloud has dimensions of about 3.3{deg}x0.5{deg}, and has a morphology somewhat similar to high-velocity H I clouds (HVCs). Several possible associations with other objects are examined in this paper. A variable inverted-spectrum radio continuum source exists near the morphological center of the H I cloud. It is probably a rare example of a gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) extragalactic source having a peak above 5GHz. A luminous B star is found close to the peculiar H I cloud, and the cloud is also located near the center of an H I supershell, supposedly located at a distance of about 9kpc. Energetic and other considerations lead to the conclusion that the cloud is probably not related to the HVC phenomenon nor to any of the above objects but is a relic of a nearby (D~1kpc) supernova event, all other evidence of which has now dissipated. Maps of continuum radio emission (at 1420 and 408MHz) in the area around the cloud are presented, as well as lists of continuum radio sources. A few isolated high-velocity knots of H I emission have also been detected in the vicinity of the cloud.
