- We present results from a survey of the internal kinematics of 49 star-forming galaxies at z~2 in the CANDELS fields with the Keck/MOSFIRE spectrograph, Survey in the near-Infrared of Galaxies with Multiple position Angles (SIGMA). Kinematics (rotation velocity V_rot_ and gas velocity dispersion {sigma}_g_) are measured from nebular emission lines which trace the hot ionized gas surrounding star-forming regions. We find that by z~2, massive star-forming galaxies (logM_*_/M_{sun}_>~10.2) have assembled primitive disks: their kinematics are dominated by rotation, they are consistent with a marginally stable disk model, and they form a Tully-Fisher relation. These massive galaxies have values of V_rot_/{sigma}_g_ that are factors of 2-5 lower than local well-ordered galaxies at similar masses. Such results are consistent with findings by other studies. We find that low-mass galaxies (logM_*_/M_{sun}_<~10.2) at this epoch are still in the early stages of disk assembly: their kinematics are often dominated by gas velocity dispersion and they fall from the Tully-Fisher relation to significantly low values of V_rot_. This "kinematic downsizing" implies that the process(es) responsible for disrupting disks at z~2 have a stronger effect and/or are more active in low-mass systems. In conclusion, we find that the period of rapid stellar mass growth at z~2 is coincident with the nascent assembly of low-mass disks and the assembly and settling of high-mass disks.

- We present the Spectroscopic Imaging survey in the near-infrared (near-IR) with SINFONI (SINS) of high-redshift galaxies. With 80 objects observed and 63 detected in at least one rest-frame optical nebular emission line, mainly H{alpha}, SINS represents the largest survey of spatially resolved gas kinematics, morphologies, and physical properties of star-forming galaxies at z~1-3. We describe the selection of the targets, the observations, and the data reduction. We then focus on the "SINS H{alpha} sample," consisting of 62 rest-UV/optically selected sources at 1.3<z<2.6 for which we targeted primarily the H{alpha} and [NII] emission lines. Only ~30% of this sample had previous near-IR spectroscopic observations. The galaxies were drawn from various imaging surveys with different photometric criteria; as a whole, the SINS H{alpha} sample covers a reasonable representation of massive M_*_>~10^10^M_{sun}_ star-forming galaxies at z~1.5-2.5, with some bias toward bluer systems compared to pure K-selected samples due to the requirement of secure optical redshift. The H{alpha} morphologies tend to be irregular and/or clumpy. About one-third of the SINS H{alpha} sample galaxies are rotation-dominated yet turbulent disks, another one-third comprises compact and velocity dispersion-dominated objects, and the remaining galaxies are clear interacting/merging systems; the fraction of rotation-dominated systems increases among the more massive part of the sample.

- We aim to present 70 spectra of 68 new high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) measured at ESO's VLT during the final two years of operation (2006-2008) of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). This new sample complements the VLT three year spectral set. Altogether, these two data sets form the five year sample of SNLS SN Ia spectra measured at the VLT on which the final SNLS cosmological analysis will partly be based. In the redshift range considered, this sample is unique in terms of homogeneity and number of spectra. We use it to investigate the possibility of a spectral evolution of SNe Ia populations with redshift as well as SNe Ia spectral properties as a function of lightcurve fit parameters and the mass of the host-galaxy. Reduction and extraction are based on both IRAF standard tasks and our own reduction pipeline. Redshifts are estimated from host-galaxy lines whenever possible or alternatively from supernova features. We used the spectro-photometric SN Ia model SALT2 combined with a set of galaxy templates that model the host-galaxy contamination to assess the type Ia nature of the candidates. We identify 68 new SNe Ia with redshift ranging from z=0.207 to z=0.98 for an average redshift of z=0.62. Each spectrum is presented individually along with its best-fit SALT2 model. Adding this new sample to the three year VLT sample of SNLS, the final dataset contains 209 spectra corresponding to 192 SNe Ia identified at the VLT. We also publish the redshifts of other candidates (host galaxies or other transients) whose spectra were obtained at the same time as the spectra of live SNe Ia. This list provides a new redshift catalog useful for upcoming galaxy surveys. Using the full VLT SNe Ia sample, we build composite spectra around maximum light with cuts in color, the lightcurve shape parameter ("stretch"), host-galaxy mass and redshift. We find that high-z SNe Ia are bluer, brighter and have weaker intermediate mass element absorption lines than their low-z counterparts at a level consistent with what is expected from selection effects. We also find a flux excess in the range [3000-3400]{AA} for SNe Ia in low mass host-galaxies (M<10^10^M_{sun}_) or with locally blue U-V colors, and suggest that the UV flux (or local color) may be used in future cosmological studies as a third standardization parameter in addition to stretch and color.

- Here we describe the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) and present results on 64 galaxies drawn from the first data release. The S7 uses the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope located at the Siding Spring Observatory to deliver an integral field of 38x25 arcsec at a spectral resolution of R=7000 in the red (530-710nm), and R=3000 in the blue (340-560nm). From these data cubes we have extracted the narrow-line region spectra from a 4 arcsec aperture centered on the nucleus. We also determine the H{beta} and [OIII]{lambda}5007 fluxes in the narrow lines, the nuclear reddening, the reddening-corrected relative intensities of the observed emission lines, and the H{beta} and [OIII]{lambda}5007 luminosities determined from spectra for which the stellar continuum has been removed. We present a set of images of the galaxies in [OIII]{lambda}5007, [NII]{lambda}6584, and H{alpha}, which serve to delineate the spatial extent of the extended narrow-line region and also to reveal the structure and morphology of the surrounding HII regions. Finally, we provide a preliminary discussion of those Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies that display coronal emission lines in order to explore the origin of these lines.

- The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of ultraviolet (UV)+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circumgalactic/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro+ (2018Natur.558..406N) reported the detection of two OVII WHIM absorbers at z=0.4339 and 0.3551 in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a z=0.433 group and that the higher-z OVII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The z=0.3551 candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass logM_*_/M_{sun}_~9.7), which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad HI Ly{alpha} absorbers (Doppler widths of b=40-80km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) that provide metallicity-independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly{alpha} absorbers are ~2x closer to the nearest luminous (L>0.25L*) galaxy (700kpc) than narrow (b<30km/s; T<~4x10^5^K) ones (1300kpc) but ~2x further than OVI absorbers (350kpc). These observations suggest that gravitational collapse heats portions of the IGM to form the WHIM, but with feedback that does not enrich the IGM far beyond galaxy/group halos to levels currently observable in UV/X-ray metal lines.

- The {rho}Puppis stars are mid-F-type stars that show peculiar chemical-abundance patterns similar to those of the Am stars. Typically they exhibit overabundances of iron-peak elements such as Fe and Ni and s- and r-process elements such as Sr and Eu, and underabundances of certain other elements including He, Ca, and Sc. It has been proposed that these stars are evolving Am stars passing through the short-lived phase that occurs between the re-establishment of convection and the consequent erasure of their chemical peculiarities. In this paper we suggest a second hypothesis: these stars may have acquired their peculiar abundance patterns in a fashion similar to the Barium stars, i.e., they may have gained the s-process element enhancements via mass transfer from a once asymptotic giant-branch companion star, now turned white dwarf. This study will detail our efforts to investigate the {rho}Puppis stars with regard to these two hypotheses, with a view to understanding these stars and their significance in terms of stellar evolution. We have performed a spectral classification survey, and a detailed chemical-abundance analysis of selected {rho}Puppis stars. This paper gives an overview of the {rho}Puppis stars and describes the spectral classification survey which has increased the number of {rho}Puppis stars currently known from 6 to 49. A future paper will describe the chemical-abundance analysis which should provide insight into the nature of these stars.

- We present observations of SCP 06F6, an unusual optical transient discovered during the Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey. The transient brightened over a period of ~100 days, reached a peak magnitude of ~21.0 in both i_775_ and z_850_, and then declined over a similar timescale. There is no host galaxy or progenitor star detected at the location of the transient to a 3{sigma} upper limit of i_775_>=26.4 and z_850_>=26.1, giving a corresponding lower limit on the flux increase of a factor of ~120. Multiple spectra show five broad absorption bands between 4100{AA} and 6500{AA}, and a mostly featureless continuum longward of 6500{AA}. The shape of the light curve is inconsistent with microlensing. The transient's spectrum, in addition to being inconsistent with all known supernova types, does not match any spectrum in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. We suggest that the transient may be one of a new class.

- We present the results of a search for wide companions to planet-host stars to improve our knowledge on their multiplicity at wide physical separations. We cross-matched approximately 6200 square degree area of the Southern sky imaged by the Visible Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Hemisphere Survey (VHS) with the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) to look for wide common proper motion companions to known planet-host stars. We complemented our astrometric search with photometric criteria. We confirmed spectroscopically the co-moving nature of seven sources out of 16 companion candidates and discarded eight, while the remaining one stays as a candidate. Among these new wide companions to planet-host stars, we discovered a T4.5 dwarf companion at 6.3-arcmin (~9000AU) from HIP70849, a K7V star which hosts a 9 Jupiter mass planet with an eccentric orbit. We also report two new stellar M dwarf companions to one G and one metal-rich K star. We infer stellar and substellar binary frequencies for our complete sample of 37 targets of 5.4+/-3.8% and 2.7+/-2.7% (1 sigma confidence level), respectively, for projected physical separations larger than ~60-160AU assuming the range of distances of planet-host stars (24-75pc). These values are comparable to the frequencies of non planet-host stars. We find that the period-eccentricity trend holds with a lack of multiple systems with planets at large eccentricities (e>0.2) for periods less than 40-days. However, the lack of planets more massive than 2.5 Jupiter masses and short periods (<40-days) orbiting single stars is not so obvious due to recent discoveries by ground-based transit surveys and space missions.

- We investigate the accuracy of 4000{AA}/Balmer-break based redshifts by combining Hubble Space Telescope (HST) grism data with photometry. The grism spectra are from the Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically survey with HST using the G800L grism on the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The photometric data come from a compilation by the 3D-HST collaboration of imaging from multiple surveys (notably, the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Survey (CANDELS) and 3D-HST). We show evidence that spectrophotometric redshifts (SPZs) typically improve the accuracy of photometric redshifts by ~17%-60%. Our SPZ method is a template-fitting-based routine that accounts for correlated data between neighboring points within grism spectra via the covariance matrix formalism and also accounts for galaxy morphology along the dispersion direction. We show that the robustness of the SPZ is directly related to the fidelity of the D4000 measurement. We also estimate the accuracy of continuum-based redshifts, i.e., for galaxies that do not contain strong emission lines, based on the grism data alone ({sigma}_{Delta}z/(1+z)_^NMAD^<~0.06). Given that future space-based observatories like Wide Field InfraRed Survey Telescope and Euclid will spend a significant fraction of time on slitless spectroscopic observations, we estimate number densities for objects with |{Delta}z/(1+z_s_)|<=0.02. We predict ~700-4400 galaxies degree^-2^ for galaxies with D4000>1.1 and |{Delta}z/(1+z_s_)|<=0.02 to a limiting depth of i_AB_=24mag. This is especially important in the absence of an accompanying rich photometric data set like the existing one for the CANDELS fields, where redshift accuracy from future surveys will rely only on the presence of a feature like the 4000{AA}/Balmer breaks or the presence of emission lines within the grism spectra.

- We present the results of the spectroscopic follow-up of the QUasars as BRIght beacons for Cosmology in the Southern Hemisphere (QUBRICS; Calderone+ 2019, J/ApJ/887/268) survey. The selection method is based on a machine-learning approach applied to photometric catalogs, covering an area of ~12400deg^2^ in the Southern Hemisphere. The spectroscopic observations started in 2018 and identified 55 new, high-redshift (z>=2.5), bright (i<=18) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), with the catalog published in late 2019. Here we report the current status of the survey, bringing the total number of bright QSOs at z>=2.5 identified by QUBRICS to 224. The success rate of the QUBRICS selection method, in its most recent training, is estimated to be 68%. The predominant contaminant turns out to be lower-z QSOs at z<2.5. This survey provides a unique sample of bright QSOs at high z available for a number of cosmological investigations. In particular, carrying out the redshift drift measurements (Sandage Test) in the Southern Hemisphere, using the High Resolution Spectrograph at the 39m Extremely Large Telescope appears to be possible with less than 2500hr of observations spread over 30 targets in 25yr.
