- Description:
- The distribution of exoplanets around low-mass stars is still not well understood. Such stars, however, present an excellent opportunity for reaching down to the rocky and habitable planet domains. The number of current detections used for statistical purposes remains relatively modest and different surveys, using both photometry and precise radial velocities, are searching for planets around M dwarfs. Our HARPS-N red dwarf exoplanet survey is aimed at the detection of new planets around a sample of 78 selected stars, together with the subsequent characterization of their activity properties. Here we investigate the survey performance and strategy. From 2700 observed spectra, we compare the radial velocity determinations of the HARPS-N DRS pipeline and the HARPS-TERRA code, calculate the mean activity jitter level, evaluate the planet detection expectations, and address the general question of how to define the strategy of spectroscopic surveys in order to be most efficient in the detection of planets. We find that the HARPS-TERRA radial velocities show less scatter and we calculate a mean activity jitter of 2.3m/s for our sample. For a general radial velocity survey with limited observing time, the number of observations per star is key for the detection efficiency. In the case of an early M-type target sample, we conclude that approximately 50 observations per star with exposure times of 900s and precisions of approximately 1m/s maximizes the number of planet detections.

- H{alpha} survey in the ONC

- Description:
- We present results from an H{alpha} emission line survey in a 1 deg^2^ area centered on the Orion Nebula Cluster, obtained with the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 on the 2.2 m telescope of the University of Hawaii. We identified 587 stars with H{alpha} emission, 99 of which, located mainly in the outer regions of the observed area, have not appeared in previous H{alpha} surveys. We determined the equivalent width (EW) of the line and, based on this, classified 372 stars as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) and 187 as weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTSs). Simultaneous r', i' photometry indicates a limiting magnitude of r' ~ 20 mag, but the sample is incomplete at r' > 17 mag. The surface distribution of the H{alpha} emission stars reveals a clustered population and a dispersed population, the former consisting of younger and more massive young stars than the latter. Comparison of the derived EWs with those found in the literature indicates variability of the H{alpha} line. We found that the typical amplitudes of the variability are not greater than a factor of two to three in most cases. We identified a subgroup of low-EW stars with infrared signatures indicative of optically thick accretion disks. We studied the correlations between the EW and other properties of the stars. Based on literature data, we examined several properties of our CTTS and WTTS subsamples and found significant differences in mid-infrared color indices, average rotational periods, and spectral energy distribution characteristics of the subsamples.

- HAQ survey: red QSO candidates follow-up
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/217/5

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are reddened by dust either in their host galaxies or in intervening absorber galaxies are to a large degree missed by optical color selection criteria like the ones used by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To overcome this bias against red QSOs, we employ a combined optical and near-infrared (near-IR) color selection. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic follow-up campaign of a sample of red candidate QSOs which were selected from the SDSS and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The spectroscopic data and SDSS/UKIDSS photometry are supplemented by mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. In our sample of 159 candidates, 154 (97%) are confirmed to be QSOs. We use a statistical algorithm to identify sightlines with plausible intervening absorption systems and identify nine such cases assuming dust in the absorber similar to Large Magellanic Cloud sightlines. We find absorption systems toward 30 QSOs, 2 of which are consistent with the best-fit absorber redshift from the statistical modeling. Furthermore, we observe a broad range in SED properties of the QSOs as probed by the rest-frame 2{mu}m flux. We find QSOs with a strong excess as well as QSOs with a large deficit at rest-frame 2{mu}m relative to a QSO template. Potential solutions to these discrepancies are discussed. Overall, our study demonstrates the high efficiency of the optical/near-IR selection of red QSOs.

- HeCS-red: Hectospec surveys of redMaPPer clusters
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/862/172
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We use dense redshift surveys to explore the properties of galaxy clusters selected from the redMaPPer catalog. Our new survey, Hectospec Cluster Survey of red-sequence-selected clusters (HeCS-red), includes 10589 new or remeasured redshifts from MMT/Hectospec observations of 27 redMaPPer clusters at redshifts z=0.08-0.25 with large estimated richnesses (richness estimate {lambda}>64). Our spectra confirm that each candidate cluster corresponds to a large overdensity in redshift space. The redMaPPer photometric redshifts have a slight bias toward higher redshifts. We measure the relation between velocity dispersion {sigma}p and {lambda}. The relation shows intrinsic scatter of 24% (and a range of 2x) in velocity dispersion at fixed richness. We extend our analysis to HeCS-red-ext, a sample that includes several clusters selected by X-ray flux or Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal. The heterogeneous sample of 121 clusters in HeCS-red-ext shows similar intrinsic scatter in the {sigma}p-{lambda} relation as the HeCS-red sample, but the range of {sigma}p at fixed richness increases to 3x. We evaluate the membership probability estimates Pmem for individual galaxies provided by redMaPPer. The spectroscopic membership fraction is larger than Pmem for 0.05<=P_mem_<=0.7; conversely, the spectroscopic membership fraction is smaller than P_mem_ at P_mem_>=0.8. We compare spectroscopic richness estimates with redMaPPer richness estimates and find good agreement on average, but a range of a factor of two in spectroscopic richness at fixed redMaPPer richness. Overall, within the high-richness and low-redshift cut of our sample, spectroscopically estimated parameters such as velocity dispersion correlate well with photometric richness estimates, although the relations contain substantial scatter.

- Description:
- The infall regions of galaxy clusters represent the largest gravitationally bound structures in a {Lambda}CDM universe. Measuring cluster mass profiles into the infall regions provides an estimate of the ultimate mass of these halos. We use the caustic technique to measure cluster mass profiles from galaxy redshifts obtained with the Hectospec Cluster Survey (HeCS), an extensive spectroscopic survey of galaxy clusters with MMT/Hectospec. We survey 58 clusters selected by X-ray flux at 0.1<z<0.3. The survey includes 22680 unique MMT/Hectospec redshifts for individual galaxies; 10145 of these galaxies are cluster members. For each cluster, we acquired high signal-to-noise spectra for ~200 cluster members and a comparable number of foreground/background galaxies. The cluster members trace out infall patterns around the clusters. The members define a very narrow red sequence. We demonstrate that the determination of velocity dispersion is insensitive to the inclusion of bluer members (a small fraction of the cluster population). We apply the caustic technique to define membership and estimate the mass profiles to large radii. The ultimate halo mass of clusters (the mass that remains bound in the far future of a {Lambda}CDM universe) is on average (1.99+/-0.11)M_200_, a new observational cosmological test in essential agreement with simulations. Summed profiles binned in M_200_ and in L_X_demonstrate that the predicted Navarro-Frenk-White form of the density profile is a remarkably good representation of the data in agreement with weak lensing results extending to large radius. The concentration of these summed profiles is also consistent with theoretical predictions.

- Description:
- We estimate cluster masses and velocity dispersions for 123 clusters from optical spectroscopy to compare the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) mass proxy and dynamical masses. Our new survey, HeCS-SZ (Hectospec Cluster Survey of SZ-selected clusters), includes 7721 new or remeasured redshifts from MMT/Hectospec observations of 21 SZ-selected clusters at redshifts z=0.05-0.20. We supplement the Hectospec data with spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and cluster data from the Cluster Infall Regions in SDSS project and the Hectospec Cluster Survey, our Hectospec survey of clusters selected by X-ray flux. We measure the scaling relation between velocity dispersion and SZ mass estimates from the integrated Compton parameter for an SZ-complete sample of 83 clusters. The observed relation agrees very well with a simple virial scaling from mass (based on SZ) to velocity dispersion. The SZ mass estimates (calibrated with hydrostatic X-ray mass estimates) are not significantly biased compared to dynamical mass estimates under the assumption of small velocity bias of galaxies compared to dark matter particles. Significant mass bias in SZ mass estimates could relieve tension between cosmological results from Planck SZ cluster counts and Planck CMB data. In principle, SZ mass bias and velocity bias of galaxies could conspire to yield good agreement, but the required velocity bias is {sigma}_galaxy_~0.77{sigma}_DM_, outside the range of recent models of velocity bias in the literature. More likely, SZ mass bias and velocity bias are both small, and the tension between SZ cluster counts and CMB data requires another explanation.

- HeII photoionization rates of quasars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/847/81
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The HeII transverse proximity effect-enhanced HeII Ly{alpha} transmission in a background sightline caused by the ionizing radiation of a foreground quasar-offers a unique opportunity to probe the morphology of quasar-driven HeII reionization. We conduct a comprehensive spectroscopic survey to find z~3 quasars in the foreground of 22 background quasar sightlines with Hubble Space Telescope/COS HeII Ly{alpha} transmission spectra. With our two-tiered survey strategy, consisting of a deep pencil-beam survey and a shallow wide-field survey, we discover 131 new quasars, which we complement with known SDSS/BOSS quasars in our fields. Using a restricted sample of 66 foreground quasars with inferred HeII photoionization rates greater than the expected UV background at these redshifts ({Gamma}_QSO_^HeII^>5x10^-16^s^-1^) we perform the first statistical analysis of the HeII transverse proximity effect. Our results show qualitative evidence for a large object-to-object variance: among the four foreground quasars with the highest {Gamma}_QSO_^HeII^ only one (previously known) quasar is associated with a significant HeII transmission spike. We perform a stacking analysis to average down these fluctuations, and detect an excess in the average HeII transmission near the foreground quasars at 3{sigma} significance. This statistical evidence for the transverse proximity effect is corroborated by a clear dependence of the signal strength on {Gamma}_QSO_^HeII^. Our detection places a purely geometrical lower limit on the quasar lifetime of t_Q_>25Myr. Improved modeling would additionally constrain quasar obscuration and the mean free path of HeII-ionizing photons.

- Herschel FIR spectra of GOALS galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/846/32
- Date:

- CDS
- Description:
- We present an analysis of [OI]_63_, [OIII]_88_, [NII]_122_, and [CII]_158_ far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line observations obtained with Herschel/PACS, for ~240 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey. We find pronounced declines ("deficits") of line-to-FIR continuum emission for [NII]_122_, [OI]_63_, and [CII]_158_ as a function of FIR color and infrared luminosity surface density, {Sigma}_IR_. The median electron density of the ionized gas in LIRGs, based on the [NII]_122_/[NII]_205_ ratio, is n_e_=41cm^-3^. We find that the dispersion in the [CII]_158_ deficit of LIRGs is attributed to a varying fractional contribution of photodissociation regions (PDRs) to the observed [CII]_158_ emission, f([CII]_158_^PDR^)=[CII]_158_^PDR^/[CII]_158_, which increases from ~60% to ~95% in the warmest LIRGs. The [OI]_63_/[CII]_158_^PDR^ ratio is tightly correlated with the PDR gas kinetic temperature in sources where [OI]_63_ is not optically thick or self-absorbed. For each galaxy, we derive the average PDR hydrogen density, n_H_, and intensity of the interstellar radiation field, G, in units of G_0_ and find G/n_H_ ratios of ~0.1-50G_0_.cm^3^, with ULIRGs populating the upper end of the distribution. There is a relation between G/n_H_ and {Sigma}_IR_, showing a critical break at {Sigma}_IR_^*^~5x10^10^L_{sun}_/kpc^2^. Below {Sigma}_IR_^*^, G/n_H_ remains constant, ~0.32G_0_.cm^3^, and variations in {Sigma}_IR_ are driven by the number density of star-forming regions within a galaxy, with no change in their PDR properties. Above {Sigma}_IR_^*^, G/n_H_ increases rapidly with {Sigma}_IR_, signaling a departure from the typical PDR conditions found in normal star-forming galaxies toward more intense/harder radiation fields and compact geometries typical of starbursting sources.

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We study the escape of Ly{alpha} photons from Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs) and the overall galaxy population using a sample of 99 LAEs at 1.9<z<3.8 detected through integral-field spectroscopy of blank fields by The Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Pilot Survey. For 89 LAEs with broadband counterparts we measure ultraviolet (UV) luminosities and UV slopes, and estimate E(B-V) under the assumption of a constant intrinsic UV slope for LAEs. These quantities are used to estimate dust-corrected star formation rates (SFRs). Comparison between the observed Ly{alpha} luminosity and that predicted by the dust-corrected SFR yields the Ly{alpha} escape fraction. We also measure the Ly{alpha} luminosity function and luminosity density ({rho}_Ly{alpha}_) at 2<z<4. Using this and other measurements from the literature at 0.3<z<7.7 we trace the redshift evolution of {rho}_Ly{alpha}_. We compare it to the expectations from the star formation history of the universe and characterize the evolution of the Ly{alpha} escape fraction of galaxies.

- HET Massive Galaxy Survey (HETMGS)
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/218/10
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have conducted an optical long-slit spectroscopic survey of 1022 galaxies using the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) at McDonald Observatory. The main goal of the HET Massive Galaxy Survey (HETMGS) is to find nearby galaxies that are suitable for black hole mass measurements. In order to measure accurately the black hole mass, one should kinematically resolve the region where the black hole dominates the gravitational potential. For most galaxies, this region is much less than an arcsecond. Thus, black hole masses are best measured in nearby galaxies with telescopes that obtain high spatial resolution. The HETMGS focuses on those galaxies predicted to have the largest sphere-of-influence, based on published stellar velocity dispersions or the galaxy fundamental plane. To ensure coverage over galaxy types, the survey targets those galaxies across a face-on projection of the fundamental plane. We present the sample selection and resulting data products from the long-slit observations, including central stellar kinematics and emission line ratios. The full data set, including spectra and resolved kinematics, is available online. Additionally, we show that the current crop of black hole masses are highly biased toward dense galaxies and that especially large disks and low dispersion galaxies are under-represented. This survey provides the necessary groundwork for future systematic black hole mass measurement campaigns.
