- We use homogeneous samples of radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the connection between the velocity shift and the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII]{lambda}5007 emission line, and their correlations with physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find a significant and negative correlation between the EW of the core component, EW(core), and the blueshift of either the core (the peak), the wing, or the total profile of [OIII] emission; it is fairly strong for the blueshift of the total profile in particular. However, both quantities (EW and velocity shift) generally have only weak, if any, correlations with fundamental AGN parameters such as the nuclear continuum luminosity at 5100{AA} (L_5100_), black hole mass (M_BH_), and the Eddington ratio (L/L_Edd_); these correlations include the classical Baldwin effect of EW(core), an inverse Baldwin effect of EW(wing), and the relationship between velocity shifts and L/L_Edd_. Our findings suggest that both the large object-to-object variation in the strength of [OIII] emission and the blueshift-EW(core) connection are not governed primarily by fundamental AGN parameters such as L_5100_, M_BH_, and L/L_Edd_. We propose that the interstellar medium conditions of the host galaxies play a major role instead in the diversity of the [OIII] properties in active galaxies. This suggests that the use of [OIII]{lambda}5007 luminosity as a proxy of AGN luminosity does not depend strongly on the above-mentioned fundamental AGN parameters.

- The symbiotic nova RR Telescopii has been observed with the 3.9 m telescope at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO), using the University College London Echelle Spectrograph (UCLES) in conjunction with a Tek CCD. It displays a rich emission line spectrum, ranging in excitation from NI to NiVIII. We present a list of 811 measured lines, with their suggested identifications and absolute line intensities, covering a wavelength range from 3180 to 9455 A. The absolute line intensities have been derived by comparing the high resolution data with a flux-calibrated low resolution spectrum taken with the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope. All of the lines have been successfully identified. Comparing our results with those of previous studies indicates that the RR Tel system is advancing towards higher degrees of ionisation.

- We present the redshift catalogs for the X-ray sources detected in the Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N), the Chandra Large Area Synoptic X-ray Survey (CLASXS), and the Chandra Lockman Area North Survey (CLANS). The catalogs for the CDF-N and CLASXS fields include redshifts from previous work, while the redshifts for the CLANS field are all new. For fluxes above 10^-14^ergs/cm^2^/s (2-8keV) we have redshifts for 76% of the sources. We extend the redshift information for the full sample using photometric redshifts. The goal of the OPTX Project is to use these three surveys, which are among the most spectroscopically complete surveys to date, to analyze the effect of spectral type on the shape and evolution of the X-ray luminosity functions and to compare the optical spectral types with the X-ray spectral properties. We also present the CLANS X-ray catalog. The nine ACIS-I fields cover a solid angle of ~0.6deg^2^ and reach fluxes of 7x10^-16^ergs/cm^2^/s (0.5-2keV) and 3.5x10^-15^ergs/cm^2^/s (2-8keV). We find a total of 761 X-ray point sources. In addition, we present the optical and infrared photometric catalog for the CLANS X-ray sources, as well as updated optical and infrared photometric catalogs for the X-ray sources in the CLASXS and CDF-N fields.

- It remains difficult to interpret the near-IR emission of young stellar populations. One main reason is our incomplete understanding of the spectra of luminous red stars. This work provides a grid of theoretical spectra of red giant (RG) and red supergiant (RSG) stars, that extends through optical and near-IR wavelengths. For the first time, models are also provided with modified surface abundances of C, N and O, as a step towards accounting for the changes that occur due to convective dredge-up in red supergiants or may occur at earlier evolutionary stages in the case of rotation. The aims are (i) to assess how well current models reproduce observed spectra, in particular in the near-IR; (ii) to quantify the effects of the abundance changes on the spectra; and (iii) to determine how these changes affect estimates of fundamental stellar parameters.

- We present Keck NIRSPEC and Keck NIRES spectroscopy of sixteen metal-poor galaxies that have pre-existing optical observations. The near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy specifically targets the HeI{lambda}10830{AA} emission line, due to its sensitivity to the physical conditions of the gas in HII regions. We use these NIR observations, combined with optical spectroscopy, to determine the helium abundance of sixteen galaxies across a metallicity range 12+log_10_(O/H)=7.13-8.00. This data set is combined with two other samples where metallicity and helium abundance measurements can be secured: star-forming galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic database, and existing low-metallicity systems in the literature. We calculate a linear fit to these measurements, accounting for intrinsic scatter, and report a new determination of the primordial helium number abundance, y_P_=0.0805_-0.0017_^+0.0017^, which corresponds to a primordial helium mass fraction Y_P_=0.2436_-0.0040_^+0.0039^. Using our determination of the primordial helium abundance in combination with the latest primordial deuterium measurement, (D/H)_P_x10^5^=2.527+/-0.030, we place a bound on the baryon density {Omega}_b_h^2^=0.0215_-0.0005_^+0.0005^ and the effective number of neutrino species N_eff_=2.85_-0.25_^+0.28^. These values are in 1.3{sigma} agreement with those deduced from the Planck satellite observations of the temperature fluctuations imprinted on the cosmic microwave background.

- Temperature inversion layers are predicted to be present in ultra-hot giant planet atmospheres. Although such inversion layers have recently been observed in several ultra-hot Jupiters, the chemical species responsible for creating the inversion remain unidentified. Here, we present observations of the thermal emission spectrum of an ultra-hot Jupiter, WASP-189b, at high spectral resolution using the HARPS-N spectrograph. Using the cross-correlation technique, we detect a strong FeI signal. The detected FeI spectral lines are found in emission, which is direct evidence of a temperature inversion in the planetary atmosphere. We further performed a retrieval on the observed spectrum using a forward model with an MCMC approach. When assuming a solar metallicity, the best-fit result returns a temperature of 4320 K at the top of the inversion, which is significantly hotter than the planetary equilibrium temperature (2641 K). The temperature at the bottom of the inversion is determined as 2200 K. Such a strong temperature inversion is probably created by the absorption of atomic species like FeI.

- Time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of thermonuclear bursts observed from low-mass X-ray binaries offer a unique tool to measure neutron-star masses and radii. In this paper, we continue our systematic analysis of all the X-ray bursts observed with Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer from X-ray binaries. We determine the events that show clear evidence for photospheric radius expansion and measure the Eddington limits for these accreting neutron stars using the bolometric fluxes attained at the touchdown moments of each X-ray burst. We employ a Bayesian technique to investigate the degree to which the Eddington limit for each source remains constant between bursts. We find that for sources with a large number of radius expansion bursts, systematic uncertainties are at a 5%-10% level. Moreover, in six sources with only pairs of Eddington-limited bursts, the distribution of fluxes is consistent with a ~10% fractional dispersion. This indicates that the spectroscopic measurements of neutron-star masses and radii using thermonuclear X-ray bursts can reach the level of accuracy required to distinguish between different neutron-star equations of state, provided that uncertainties related to the overall flux calibration of X-ray detectors are of comparable magnitude.

- The red MSX source (RMS) survey has identified a large sample of candidate massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and ultra compact (UC) HII regions from a sample of ~2000 MSX and 2MASS colour selected sources. To search for H_2_O masers towards a large sample of young high mass stars and to investigate the statistical correlation of H_2_O masers with the earliest stages of massive star formation. We have used the Mopra Radio telescope to make position-switched observations towards ~500 UCHII regions and MYSOs candidates identified from the RMS survey and located between 190{deg}<l<30{deg}. These observations have a 4{sigma} sensitivity of ~1Jy and a velocity resolution of ~0.4km/s.
