Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main-sequence companions. Detecting these hidden stars and obtaining a more complete census of nearby WDs is important for our understanding of stellar and galactic evolution, as well as the study of explosive phenomena. In an attempt to uncover these hidden WDs, we present intermediate resolution spectroscopy over the wavelength range of 3000-25000{AA} of 101 nearby M dwarfs (dMs), observed with the Very Large Telescope X-Shooter spectrograph. For each star we search for a hot component superimposed on the dM spectrum. X-Shooter has excellent blue sensitivity and thus can reveal a faint hot WD despite the brightness of its red companion. Visual examination shows no clear evidence of a WD in any of the spectra. We place upper limits on the effective temperatures of WDs that may still be hiding by fitting dM templates to the spectra and modeling the WD spectra. On average our survey is sensitive to WDs hotter than about 5300K. This suggests that the frequency of WD companions of Teff>~5300K with separation of the order of <~50 au among the local dM population is <3% at the 95% confidence level.

Knowledge of late K and M dwarf metallicities can be used to guide planet searches and constrain planet formation models. However, the determination of metallicities of late-type stars is difficult because visible wavelength spectra of their cool atmospheres contain many overlapping absorption lines, preventing the measurement of equivalent widths. We present new methods, and improved calibrations of existing methods, to determine metallicities of late K and M dwarfs from moderate resolution (1300<R<2000) visible and infrared spectra. We select a sample of 112 wide binary systems that contain a late-type companion to a solar-type primary star. Our sample includes 62 primary stars with previously published metallicities, as well as 50 stars with metallicities determined from our own observations. We use our sample to empirically determine which features in the spectrum of the companion are best correlated with the metallicity of the primary. We find ~120 features in K and M dwarf spectra that are useful for predicting metallicity. We derive metallicity calibrations for different wavelength ranges, and show that it is possible to get metallicities reliable to <0.10dex using either visible, J-, H-, or K-band spectra. We find that the most accurate metallicities derived from visible spectra requires the use of different calibrations for early-type (K5.5-M2) and late-type (M2-M6) dwarfs. Our calibrations are applicable to dwarfs with metallicities of -1.04<[Fe/H]<+0.56 and spectral types from K7 to M5. Lastly, we use our sample of wide binaries to test and refine existing calibrations to determine M dwarf metallicities. We find that the {zeta} parameter, which measures the ratio of TiO can CaH bands, is correlated with [Fe/H] for super-solar metallicities, and {zeta} does not always correctly identify metal-poor M dwarfs. We also find that existing calibrations in the K and H bands are quite reliable for stars with [Fe/H]>-0.5, but are less useful for more metal-poor stars.

I present a catalog of point-source objects toward NGC 1333, resolving a wide variety of confusion about source names (and occasionally positions) in the literature. I incorporate data from optical to radio wavelengths, but focus most of the effort on being complete and accurate from J (1.25{mu}m) to 24{mu}m. The catalog encompasses 52^{deg}^<R.A.<52.5{deg} and 31{deg}<decl.<31.6{deg}. Cross-identifications include those from more than 25 papers and catalogs from 1994 to 2014, primarily those in wide use as origins of nomenclature. Gaps in our knowledge are identified, with the most important being a lack of spectroscopy for spectral types or even confirmation of youth and/or cluster membership. I fit a slope to the spectral energy distribution (SED) between 2 and 24{mu}m for the members (and candidate members) to obtain an SED classification, and I compare the resulting classes to those for the same sources in the literature, and for an SED fit between 2 and 8{mu}m. While there are certainly differences, for the majority of the sources, there is good agreement.

We probed stellar X-ray activity over a wide range of stellar parameters, using Chandra and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) data. We measured the X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratio (R_X_=L_X_/L_bol_) for 484 main-sequence stars and found a bimodal distribution for G and K types. We interpret this bimodality as evidence of two subpopulations with different coronal temperatures, which are caused by different coronal heating rates. Using the metallicity and velocity information, we find that both of the subpopulations are mostly located in the thin disk. We find no trend of R_X_ with stellar age for stars older than ~4Gyr; there is a trough in the R_X_ versus age distribution, with the lowest range of R_X_ appearing at ages around 2Gyr. We then examined the correlation between R_X_ and R_H{alpha}_ (proxy of chromospheric activity): we find that the two quantities are well correlated, as found in many earlier studies. Finally, we selected a sample of 12 stars with X-ray flares and studied the light-curve morphology of the flares. The variety of flare profiles and timescales observed in our sample suggests the contribution of different processes of energy release.

Young, low-mass stars in the solar neighborhood are vital for completing the mass function for nearby, young coeval groups, establishing a more complete census for evolutionary studies, and providing targets for direct-imaging exoplanet and/or disk studies. We present properties derived from high-resolution optical spectra for 336 candidate young nearby, low-mass stars. These include measurements of radial velocities and age diagnostics such as H{alpha} and Li {lambda}6707 equivalent widths. Combining our radial velocities with astrometry from Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345), we provide full 3D kinematics for the entire sample. We combine the measured spectroscopic youth information with additional age diagnostics (e.g., X-ray and UV fluxes, color-magnitude diagram positions) and kinematics to evaluate potential membership in nearby, young moving groups and associations. We identify 77 objects in our sample as bona fide members of 10 different moving groups, 14 of which are completely new members or have had their group membership reassigned. We also reject 44 previously proposed candidate moving group members. Furthermore, we have newly identified or confirmed the youth of numerous additional stars that do not belong to any currently known group and find 69 comoving systems using Gaia DR2 astrometry. We also find evidence that the Carina association is younger than previously thought, with an age similar to the {beta} Pictoris moving group (~22 Myr).

We confirm 66 low-mass stellar and brown dwarf systems (K7-M9) plus 19 visual or spectroscopic companions of the {beta} Pictoris moving group (BPMG). Of these, 41 are new discoveries, increasing the known low-mass members by 45%. We also add four objects to the 14 known with masses predicted to be less than 0.07 M_{sun}_. Our efficient photometric + kinematic selection process identified 104 low-mass candidates, which we observed with ground-based spectroscopy. We collected infrared observations of the latest spectral types (>M5) to search for low-gravity objects. These and all <M5 candidates were observed with high-resolution optical spectrographs to measure the radial velocities and youth indicators, such as lithium absorption and H{alpha} emission, needed to confirm BPMG membership, achieving a 63% confirmation rate. We also compiled the most complete census of BPMG membership, with which we tested the efficiency and false-membership assignments using our selection and confirmation criteria. Using the new census, we assess a group age of 22+/-6 Myr, consistent with past estimates. With the now-densely sampled lithium depletion boundary, we resolve the broadening of the boundary by either an age spread or astrophysical influences on lithium-burning rates. We find that 69% of the now-known members with AFGKM primaries are M stars, nearing the expected value of 75%. However, the new initial mass function for the BPMG shows a deficit of 0.2-0.3 M_{sun}_ stars by a factor of ~2. We expect that the AFGK census of the BPMG is also incomplete, probably due to biases of searches toward the nearest stars.

Open clusters are collections of stars with a single, well-determined age, and can be used to investigate the connections between angular-momentum evolution and magnetic activity over a star's lifetime. We present the results of a comparative study of the relationship between stellar rotation and activity in two benchmark open clusters: Praesepe and the Hyades. As they have the same age and roughly solar metallicity, these clusters serve as an ideal laboratory for testing the agreement between theoretical and empirical rotation-activity relations at ~600 Myr. We have compiled a sample of 720 spectra - more than half of which are new observations - for 516 high-confidence members of Praesepe; we have also obtained 139 new spectra for 130 high-confidence Hyads. We have also collected rotation periods (P_rot_) for 135 Praesepe members and 87 Hyads. To compare H{alpha} emission, an indicator of chromospheric activity, as a function of color, mass, and Rossby number R_o_, we first calculate an expanded set of {chi} values, with which we can obtain the H{alpha} to bolometric luminosity ratio, L_H{alpha}_/L_bol_, even when spectra are not flux-calibrated and/or stars lack reliable distances. Our {chi} values cover a broader range of stellar masses and colors (roughly equivalent to spectral types from K0 to M9), and exhibit better agreement between independent calculations, than existing values. Unlike previous authors, we find no difference between the two clusters in their H{alpha} equivalent width or L_H{alpha}_/L_bol_ distributions, and therefore take the merged H{alpha} and P_rot_ data to be representative of 600 Myr old stars. Our analysis shows that H{alpha} activity in these stars is saturated for R_O_<=0.11\-0.03_^+0.02^. Above that value activity declines as a power-law with slope {beta}=0.73_-0.12_^+0.16^, before dropping off rapidly at R_o_{approx} 0.4. These data provide a useful anchor for calibrating the age-activity-rotation relation beyond 600 Myr.

The present work presents a case study of known variables from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey, with the aim of investigating the survey's suitability for the detection and study of new ACV variables. Using suitable selection criteria based on the known characteristics of ACV variables, candidate ACV stars were selected from the ZTF Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars. All light curves were inspected in detail to select the most promising candidates. Where available, low-resolution spectra from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) were employed to classify the stars on the MK system and confirm their status as mCP stars. We have identified 86 new promising ACV star candidates. 15 of these stars have LAMOST spectra available, which, in all cases, confirm them as classical mCP stars, which highlights the viability of our approach. We present astrophysical parameters for all sample stars, which can be sorted into four subgroups characterized by distinct light curve shapes. Anti-phase variations in different photometric passbands, in particular, is a unique characteristic of a subset of ACV stars readily usable for their identification. The availability of data in three different passbands (g, r, and i) is a major advantage of the ZTF survey. On the basis of our experience with other photometric surveys and the analysis of light curves, we conclude that the ZTF is well suited for the search for, and the analysis of, ACV variables, which, however, are not considered in the available ZTF variable star catalogues. Further work will be concerned with the development and refinement of a search algorithm to correctly identify these stars in ZTF data and, subsequently, in massive photometric time-series databases in general.

We present a catalogue of 247 photometrically and spectroscopically confirmed fainter classical Be stars (13<r<16) in the direction of the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way (1{deg}<b<+4{deg}, 120{deg}<l<140{deg}). The catalogue consists of 181 IPHAS-selected new classical Be stars, in addition to 66 objects that we studied in our previous work more closely, and three stars identified as classical Be stars in earlier work. This study more than doubles the number known in the region. Photometry spanning 0.6-5um, spectral types, and interstellar reddenings are given for each object. The spectral types were determined from low-resolution spectra ({lambda}/{Delta}_{lambda}~800-2000), to a precision of 1-3 subtypes. The interstellar reddenings are derived from the (r-i) colour, using a method that corrects for circumstellar disc emission. The colour excesses obtained range from E(B-V)=0.3 up to 1.6 a distribution that modestly extends the range reported in the literature for Perseus-Arm open clusters. For around half the sample, the reddenings obtained are compatible with measures of the total sightline Galactic extinction. Many of these are likely to lie well beyond the Perseus Arm.

The All-Sky Compiled Catalogue of 2501313 stars (ASCC-2.5) with the limiting magnitude V=12-14 is a result of a merging of star lists from present day large high-precision catalogues from space (Hipparcos- Tycho family catalogues: Hipparcos main catalogue including Multiple System Annex [I/239], Tycho-1 [I/239], Tycho-2 [I/259], ACT-RC [I/246], TRC [I/250]) and ground-based (PPM-N [I/146], PPM-S [I/193], PPM-add [I/208], CMC11 [I/256]) observations and reduction to standard systems of corresponding stellar data. The data from the Tycho-2 Spectral Type Catalog [III/231], and the 2MASS All-Sky Catalog of Point Sources [II/246] are added. The basic stellar data presented in the ASCC-2.5 are the equatorial coordinates (J2000, epoch 1991.25), proper motions in the Hipparcos system, B and/or V stellar magnitudes in the Johnson system. Additionally, for some stars we give trigonometric parallaxes, spectral classes in the MK or HD system, multiplicity and variability flags, Hipparcos, Tycho-2, HD, DM designations. Equatorial coordinates and their standard errors were taken from the source catalogues in accordance with the priority: Hipparcos [I/239/hip_main], Tycho-2 [I/259], Tycho-1 [I/239/tyc_main], CMC11 [I/256], PPM [I/146,I/193,I/208]. Proper motions from the source catalogues were compared with Hipparcos data.The compiled proper motions in the Hipparcos system and their standard errors were computed as the weighted means. The weights were set in accordance with the proper motion errors listed for individual stars in the source catalogues. Trigonometric parallaxes are taken from the Hipparcos and Tycho-1 catalogues. Stellar B, V magnitudes were determined on the basis of the ground- based photometric data taken from CMC11, Hipparcos, as well as space BT, VT from Tycho-1, Tycho-2. Magnitudes from the PPM catalogue were used if no other photometric data were available. Tycho data were transformed to the Johnson system via: V = VT - 0.09 (B-V)T + dV, (B-V) = 0.850 (B-V)T + d(B-V), i.e. using the recommendations from the Introduction to the Tycho catalogue and including additional corrections dV and d(B-V). These additional corrections were determined by comparison with ground-based data in the Johnson system. These corrections depend non-linearly on colour and reach 0.02 and 0.04 mag, respectively. Infrared stellar magnitudes J, H, K_s_ and their errors were copied from the 2MASS catalogue. Spectral classes in the MK or HD systems were taken from Hipparcos, CMC11, PPM, and Tycho-2 Spectral Type catalogues. Multiplicity and variability flags were taken from Tycho-1, Tycho-2, Hipparcos, CMC11, and PPM catalogues. The 1st version of the ASCC-2.5 contained some errors in the zones -1 to +1 degree which have been corrected (see details in the "History" section below). The 2nd version included a new file (ccadd.dat) containing the previously missing stars (including components of multiple systems). Note that the ASCC numbers did not change between the two versions, but additional numbers (2600001 to 2603318) were assigned. In the present 3rd version of the ASCC-2.5 the stars from file ccadd.dat are inserted in the basic files in accordance with their coordinates. Stars in the ASCC-2.5 are divided into 30 files ordered by declination (North and South polar caps and 28 bands of 5 degrees width), then sorted in order of right ascension within each file.
