- We present a first look at the SCUBA-2 observations of three sub-regions of the Orion B molecular cloud: LDN 1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071, from the JCMT Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We identify 29, 564, and 322 dense cores in L1622, NGC 2023/2024, and NGC 2068/2071 respectively, using the SCUBA-2 850{mu}m map, and present their basic properties, including their peak fluxes, total fluxes, and sizes, and an estimate of the corresponding 450{mu}m peak fluxes and total fluxes, using the FellWalker source extraction algorithm. Assuming a constant temperature of 20K, the starless dense cores have a mass function similar to that found in previous dense core analyses, with a Salpeter-like slope at the high-mass end. The majority of cores appear stable to gravitational collapse when considering only thermal pressure; indeed, most of the cores which have masses above the thermal Jeans mass are already associated with at least one protostar. At higher cloud column densities, above 1-2x10^23^/cm2, most of the mass is found within dense cores, while at lower cloud column densities, below 1x10^23^/cm2, this fraction drops to 10% or lower. Overall, the fraction of dense cores associated with a protostar is quite small (<8%), but becomes larger for the densest and most centrally concentrated cores. NGC 2023/2024 and NGC 2068/2071 appear to be on the path to forming a significant number of stars in the future, while L1622 has little additional mass in dense cores to form many new stars.

- We present the first data release of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Plane Survey (JPS), the JPS Public Release 1. JPS is an 850-{mu}m continuum survey of six fields in the northern inner Galactic plane in a longitude range of l=7{deg}-63{deg}, made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2. This first data release consists of emission maps of the six JPS regions with an average pixel-to-pixel noise of 7.19mJy/beam, when smoothed over the beam, and a compact source catalogue containing 7813 sources. The 95 per cent completeness limits of the catalogue are estimated at 0.04Jy/beam and 0.3Jy for the peak and integrated flux densities, respectively. The emission contained in the compact source catalogue is 42+/-5 per cent of the total and, apart from the large-scale (greater than 8 arcmin) emission, there is excellent correspondence with features in the 500-{mu}m Herschel maps. We find that, with two-dimensional matching, 98 {\pm} 2 per cent of sources within the fields centred at l=20{deg}, 30{deg}, 40{deg} and 50{deg} are associated with molecular clouds, with 91+/-3 per cent of the l=30{deg} and 40{deg} sources associated with dense molecular clumps. Matching the JPS catalogue to Herschel 70-{mu}m sources, we find that 38+/-1 per cent of sources show evidence of ongoing star formation. The JPS Public Release 1 images and catalogue will be a valuable resource for studies of star formation in the Galaxy and the role of environment and spiral arms in the star formation process.

- We present early results from the JCMT (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope) Plane Survey (JPS), which has surveyed the northern inner Galactic plane between longitudes l=7{deg} and l=63{deg} in the 850-{mu}m continuum with SCUBA-2 (Submm Common-User Bolometer Array 2), as part of the JCMT Legacy Survey programme. Data from the l=30{deg} survey region, which contains the massive-star-forming regions W43 and G29.96, are analysed after approximately 40 percent of the observations had been completed. The pixel-to-pixel noise is found to be 19mJy/beam after a smooth over the beam area, and the projected equivalent noise levels in the final survey are expected to be around 10mJy/beam. An initial extraction of compact sources was performed using the FellWalker method, resulting in the detection of 1029 sources above a 5{sigma} surface-brightness threshold. The completeness limits in these data are estimated to be around 0.2Jy/beam (peak flux density) and 0.8 Jy (integrated flux density) and are therefore probably already dominated by source confusion in this relatively crowded section of the survey. The flux densities of extracted compact sources are consistent with those of matching detections in the shallower APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) survey. We analyse the virial and evolutionary state of the detected clumps in the W43 star-forming complex and find that they appear younger than the Galactic-plane average.

- We present results of a high angular resolution survey of massive OB stars in the Cygnus OB2 association that we conducted with the Near-Infrared Imager camera and ALTAIR adaptive optics system of the Gemini North telescope. We observed 74 O- and early-B-type stars in Cyg OB2 in the JHK infrared bands in order to detect binary and multiple companions. The observations are sensitive to equal-brightness pairs at separations as small as 0.08", and progressively fainter companions are detectable out to {Delta}K=9mag at a separation of 2". This faint contrast limit due to read noise continues out to 10" near the edge of the detector. We assigned a simple probability of chance alignment to each companion based upon its separation and magnitude difference from the central target star and upon areal star counts for the general star field of Cyg OB2. Companion stars with a field membership probability of less than 1% are assumed to be physical companions. This assessment indicates that 47% of the targets have at least one resolved companion that is probably gravitationally bound. Including known spectroscopic binaries, our sample includes 27 binary, 12 triple, and 9 systems with 4 or more components. These results confirm studies of high-mass stars in other environments that find that massive stars are born with a high-multiplicity fraction. The results are important for the placement of the stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, the interpretation of their spectroscopic analyses, and for future mass determinations through measurement of orbital motion.

- We report the results of a deep near-infrared (JHK) survey of the outer parts of the Trapezium Cluster with Gemini South/Flamingos. 396 sources were detected in a 26-arcmin^2^ area, including 138 brown dwarf candidates, defined as M<0.075M_{sun}_ for an assumed age of 1Myr. Only 33 of the brown dwarf candidates are planetary mass candidates with estimated masses in the range 0.003<M<0.012M_{sun}_. In an extinction-limited sample (AV<5) complete to approximately 0.005M_{sun}_ (5M_Jup_) the mass function appears to drop by a factor of 2 at the deuterium burning threshold, i.e. at planetary masses. After allowing for background contamination it is likely that planetary mass objects at 3-13M_Jup_ number <10% of the cluster population, with an upper limit of 13%. Analysis of the spatial distribution of stars and brown dwarf candidates suggests that brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars (M<0.1M_{sun}_) are less likely than more massive stars to have wide (>150AU) binary companions.

- We present the final public data release of the VLT/ISAAC near-infrared imaging survey in the GOODS-South field. The survey covers an area of 172.5, 159.6 and 173.1arcmin^2^ in the J, H, and Ks bands, respectively. For point sources total limiting magnitudes of J=25.0, H=24.5, and Ks=24.4 (5{sigma}, AB) are reached within 75% of the survey area. Thus these observations are significantly deeper than the previous EIS Deep Public Survey which covers the same region. The image quality is characterized by a point spread function ranging between 0.34" and 0.65" FWHM. The images are registered to a common astrometric grid defined by the GSC 2 with an accuracy of ~0.06" RMS over the whole field. The overall photometric accuracy, including all systematic effects, adds up to 0.05mag. The data are publicly available from the ESO science archive facility.

- RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) are tracers of the Milky Way's fossil record, holding valuable information on its formation and early evolution. Owing to the high interstellar extinction endemic to the Galactic plane, distant RRLs lying at low Galactic latitudes have been elusive. We attained a census of 1892 high-confidence RRLs by exploiting the near-infrared photometric database of the VVV survey's disk footprint spanning ~70{deg} of Galactic longitude, using a machine-learned classifier. Novel data-driven methods were employed to accurately characterize their spatial distribution using sparsely sampled multi-band photometry. The RRL metallicity distribution function (MDF) was derived from their K_s_-band light-curve parameters using machine-learning methods. The MDF shows remarkable structural similarities to both the spectroscopic MDF of red clump giants and the MDF of bulge RRLs. We model the MDF with a multi-component density distribution and find that the number density of stars associated with the different model components systematically changes with both the Galactocentric radius and vertical distance from the Galactic plane, equivalent to weak metallicity gradients. Based on the consistency with results from the ARGOS survey, three MDF modes are attributed to the old disk populations, while the most metal-poor RRLs are probably halo interlopers. We propose that the dominant [Fe/H] component with a mean of -1dex might correspond to the outskirts of an ancient Galactic spheroid or classical bulge component residing in the central Milky Way. The physical origins of the RRLs in this study need to be verified by kinematical information.

- We present the selection of the Jodrell Bank Flat-spectrum (JBF) radio source sample, which is designed to reduce the uncertainties in the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) gravitational lensing statistics arising from the lack of knowledge about the parent population luminosity function. From observations at 4.86GHz with the Very Large Array, we have selected a sample of 117 flat-spectrum radio sources with flux densities greater than 5mJy. These sources were selected in a similar manner to the CLASS complete sample and are therefore representative of the parent population at low flux densities. The vast majority (~90 per cent) of the JBF sample are found to be compact on the arcsec scales probed here and show little evidence of any extended radio jet emission. Using the JBF and CLASS complete samples, we find the differential number counts slope of the parent population above and below the CLASS 30-mJy flux density limit to be 2.07+/-0.02 and 1.96+/-0.12, respectively.

- We present updated/new thermal model fits for 478 Jovian Trojan asteroids observed with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Using the fact that the two shortest bands used by WISE, centered on 3.4 and 4.6{mu}m, are dominated by reflected light, we derive albedos of a significant fraction of these objects in these bands. While the visible albedos of both the C-, P-, and D-type asteroids are strikingly similar, the WISE data reveal that the albedo at 3.4{mu}m is different between C-/P- and D-types. The albedo at 3.4{mu}m can thus be used to classify the objects, with C-/P-types having values less than 10% and D-types have values larger than 10%. Classifying all objects larger than 50km shows that the D-type objects dominate both the leading cloud (L_4_), with a fraction of 84%, and trailing cloud (L_5_), with a fraction of 71%-80%. The two clouds thus have very similar taxonomic distribution for these large objects, but the leading cloud has a larger number of these large objects, L_4_/L_5_=1.34. The taxonomic distribution of the Jovian Trojans is found to be different from that of the large Hildas, which is dominated by C- and P-type objects. At smaller sizes, the fraction of D-type Hildas starts increasing, showing more similarities with the Jovian Trojans. If this similarity is confirmed through deeper surveys, it could hold important clues to the formation and evolution of the two populations. The Jovian Trojans does have similar taxonomic distribution to that of the Jovian irregular satellites, but lacks the ultra red surfaces found among the Saturnian irregular satellites and Centaur population.

- We present the preliminary analysis of over 1739 known and 349 candidate Jovian Trojans observed by the NEOWISE component of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). With this survey the available diameters, albedos, and beaming parameters for the Jovian Trojans have been increased by more than an order of magnitude compared to previous surveys. We find that the Jovian Trojan population is very homogenous for sizes larger than ~10km (close to the detection limit of WISE for these objects). The observed sample consists almost exclusively of low albedo objects, having a mean albedo value of 0.07+/-0.03. The beaming parameter was also derived for a large fraction of the observed sample, and it is also very homogenous with an observed mean value of 0.88+/-0.13. Preliminary debiasing of the survey shows that our observed sample is consistent with the leading cloud containing more objects than the trailing cloud. We estimate the fraction to be N(leading)/N(trailing) ~1.4+/-0.2, lower than the 1.6+/-0.1 value derived by Szabo et al. (2007MNRAS.377.1393S).
