- We present a spectroscopically complete sample of 147 infrared-color-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) down to a 22{mu}m flux limit of 20mJy over the ~270deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 region. Most of these sources are in the QSO luminosity regime (Lbol>~10^12^L_{sun}_) and are found out to z~3. We classify the AGNs into three types, finding 57 blue, unobscured Type-1 (broad-lined) sources; 69 obscured, Type-2 (narrow-lined) sources; and 21 moderately reddened Type-1 sources (broad-lined and E(B-V)>0.25). We study a subset of this sample in X-rays and analyze their obscuration to find that our spectroscopic classifications are in broad agreement with low, moderate, and large amounts of absorption for Type-1, red Type-1, and Type-2 AGNs, respectively. We also investigate how their X-ray luminosities correlate with other known bolometric luminosity indicators such as [OIII] line luminosity (L[OIII]) and infrared luminosity (L6{mu}m). While the X-ray correlation with L[OIII] is consistent with previous findings, the most infrared-luminous sources appear to deviate from established relations such that they are either underluminous in X-rays or overluminous in the infrared. Finally, we examine the luminosity function evolution of our sample, and by AGN type, in combination with the complementary, infrared-selected, AGN sample of Lacy et al. (2013), spanning over two orders of magnitude in luminosity. We find that the two obscured populations evolve differently, with reddened Type-1 AGNs dominating the obscured AGN fraction (~30%) for L_5{mu}m_>10^45^erg/s, while the fraction of Type-2 AGNs with L_5{mu}m_<10^45^erg/s rises sharply from 40% to 80% of the overall AGN population.

- Using Chandra archive data we conduct a thorough survey of luminous X-ray sources. We directly analyze about 9400 ACIS Observations and cross-correlate the X-ray sources with 77000 galaxies within 250Mpc. The final catalog includes 119 unique luminous X-ray source candidates with L_X_>3x10^40^erg/s from 93 galaxies or 41 HLX candidates with L_X_>1x10^41^erg/s from 35 galaxies. We derive a moderate contamination rate due to foreground or background sources. We also cross-correlate the catalog with FIRST, perform variability and periodicity tests, and analyze one HLX candidate in particular. Our catalog could be a starting point to perform follow-up observations.

- We investigate the luminous X-ray sources in the Lockman Hole (LH) and the extended Groth strip (EGS) detected at 24{mu}m using the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) and also with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. We assemble optical/infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 45 X-ray/24{mu}m sources in the EGS and LH. Only about one-quarter of the hard X-ray/24{mu}m sources show pure type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) SEDs. More than half of the X-ray/24{mu}m sources have stellar emission-dominated or obscured SEDs, similar to those of local type 2 AGN and spiral/starburst galaxies. One-third of the sources detected in hard X-rays do not have a 24{mu}m counterpart. Two such sources in the LH have SEDs resembling those of S0/elliptical galaxies. The broad variety of SEDs in the optical-to-Spitzer bands of X-ray-selected AGNs means that AGNs selected according to the behavior in the optical/infrared will have to be supplemented by other kinds of data (e.g., X-ray) to produce unbiased samples of AGNs.

- We use the ROSAT All-Sky Survey to study the X-ray properties of a sample of 625 groups and clusters of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We stack clusters with similar velocity dispersions and investigate whether their average X-ray luminosities and surface brightness profiles vary with the radio activity level of their central galaxies. We find that at a given value of {sigma}, clusters with a central radio active galactic nucleus (AGN) have more concentrated X-ray surface brightness profiles, larger central galaxy masses and higher X-ray luminosities than clusters with radio-quiet central galaxies. The enhancement in X-ray luminosity is more than a factor of 2, is detected with better than 6{sigma} significance and cannot be explained by X-ray emission from the radio AGN itself. This difference is largely due to a subpopulation of radio-quiet, high velocity dispersion clusters with low-mass central galaxies. These clusters are underluminous at X-ray wavelengths when compared to otherwise similar clusters where the central galaxy is radio-loud, more massive, or both.

- We measure the evolution of the X-ray luminosity-temperature (L_X_-T) relation since z~1.5 using a sample of 211 serendipitously detected galaxy clusters with spectroscopic redshifts drawn from the XMM Cluster Survey first data release (XCS-DR1). This is the first study spanning this redshift range using a single, large, homogeneous cluster sample. We compare our results to numerical simulations, where we fit simulated cluster samples using the same methods used on the XCS data.

- Diffuse radio emission associated with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is observed in a number of merging galaxy clusters. It is currently believed that in mergers a fraction of the kinetic energy is channeled into non-thermal components, such as turbulence, cosmic rays and magnetic fields, that may lead to the formation of giant synchrotron sources in the ICM. Studying merging galaxy clusters in different evolutionary phases is fundamental to understanding the origin of radio emission in the ICM. We observed the nearby galaxy cluster pair RXC J1825.3+3026 (z~0.065) and CIZA J1824.1+3029 (z~0.071) at 120-168MHz with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and made use of a deep (240 ks) XMM-Newton dataset to study the nonthermal and thermal properties of the system. RXC J1825.3+3026 is in a complex dynamical state, with a primary on-going merger in the E-W direction and a secondary later stage merger with a group of galaxies in the SW, while CIZA J1824.1+3029 is dynamically relaxed. These two clusters are in a pre-merger phase. We report the discovery of a Mpc-scale radio halo with a low surface brightness extension in RXC J1825.3+3026 that follows the X-ray emission from the cluster center to the remnant of a galaxy group in the SW. This is among the least massive systems and the faintest giant radio halo known to date. Contrary to this, no diffuse radio emission is observed in CIZA J1824.1+3029 nor in the region between the pre-merger cluster pair. The power spectra of the X-ray surface brightness fluctuations of RXC J1825.3+3026 and CIZA J1824.1+3029 are in agreement with the findings for clusters exhibiting a radio halo and the ones where no radio emission has been detected, respectively. We provide quantitative support to the idea that cluster mergers play a crucial role in the generation of non-thermal components in the ICM.

- Clusters of galaxies are outstanding laboratories for understanding the physics of supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback. Here we present the first Chandra, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and Hubble Space Telescope analysis of MACS J1447.4+0827 (z=0.3755), one of the strongest cool core clusters known, in which extreme feedback from its central SMBH is needed to prevent the hot intracluster gas from cooling. Using this multiwavelength approach, including 70ks of Chandra X-ray observations, we detect the presence of collimated jetted outflows that coincide with a southern and a northern X-ray cavity. The total mechanical power associated with these outflows (P_cav_~6x1044erg/s) is roughly consistent with the energy required to prevent catastrophic cooling of the hot intracluster gas (L_cool_=1.71{+/-}0.01x1045erg/s for t_cool_=7.7Gyr), implying that powerful SMBH feedback was in place several Gyr ago in MACS J1447.7+0827. In addition, we detect the presence of a radio minihalo that extends over 300kpc in diameter (P1.4GHz=3.0{+/-}0.3x1024W/Hz). The X-ray observations also reveal an ~20kpc plumelike structure that coincides with optical dusty filaments that surround the central galaxy. Overall, this study demonstrates that the various physical phenomena occurring in the most nearby clusters of galaxies are also occurring in their more distant analogs.

- Flares from the Sun and other stars are most prominently observed in the soft X-ray band. Most of the radiated energy, however, is released at optical/UV wavelengths. In spite of decades of investigation, the physics of flares is not fully understood. Even less is known about the powerful flares routinely observed from pre-main sequence stars, which might significantly influence the evolution of circumstellar disks. Observations of the NGC2264 star forming region were obtained in Dec. 2011, simultaneously with three telescopes, Chandra (X-rays), CoRoT (optical), and Spitzer (mIR), as part of the "Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC2264" (CSI-NGC2264). Shorter Chandra and CoRoT observations were also obtained in March 2008. We analyzed the lightcurves to detect X-ray flares with an optical and/or mIR counterpart. Basic flare properties from the three datasets, such as emitted energies and peak luminosities, were then compared to constrain the spectral energy distribution of the flaring emission and the physical conditions of the emitting regions. Flares from stars with and without circumstellar disks were also compared to establish any difference that might be attributed to the presence of disks. Seventy-eight X-ray flares with an optical and/or mIR counterpart were detected. Their optical emission is found to correlate well with, and to be significantly larger than, the X-ray emission. The slopes of the correlations suggest that the difference becomes smaller for the most powerful flares. The mIR flare emission seems to be strongly affected by the presence of a circumstellar disk: flares from stars with disks have a stronger mIR emission with respect to stars without disks. This might be attributed to the reprocessing of the optical (and X-ray) flare emission by the inner circumstellar disk, providing evidence for flare-induced disk heating.
