- We present an expanded sample of low-mass black holes (BHs) found in galactic nuclei. Using standard virial mass techniques to estimate BH masses, we select from the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey all broad-line active galaxies with masses <2x10^6^M_{sun}_ BHs in this mass regime provide unique tests of the relationship between BHs and galaxies, since their late-type galaxy hosts do not necessarily contain classical bulges. Furthermore, they provide observational analogs of primordial seed BHs and are expected, when merging, to provide strong gravitational signals for future detectors such as LISA. From our preliminary sample of 19, we have increased the total sample by an order of magnitude to 174, as well as an additional 55 (less secure) candidates.

- On the basis of the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey, a study of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region has been performed in order to search for hitherto undiscovered T Tauri stars. Our study covers an area of about 280 square degrees, located between 4^h^ and 5^h^ in right ascension and between 15deg and 34deg in declination. Identification of ROSAT All-Sky Survey sources in this area by means of optical spectroscopy revealed 2 new classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) and 66 new weak-line-T Tauri stars (WTTS) with W_{lambda}_(H{alpha})<=10A. Additional pointed ROSAT observations led to the identification of 6 more WTTS and 2 CTTS, giving a total of 76 new T Tauri stars. The large area of our study, as compared with previous works, allows us to study the spatial distribution of WTTS in this star forming region. We find the WTTS of our survey to be distributed over the whole region investigated. There is a noticeable decline of the surface density from south to north within our study area, but the spatial distribution extends most probably beyond our study region. No clustering towards the population of T Tauri stars known prior to ROSAT in Taurus-Auriga could be observed. We suggest that the WTTS found in our study might in part be somewhat older than the previously known T Tauri stars in Taurus-Auriga, and that their broad spatial distribution is due to the typical velocity dispersion of a few km/s measured for Taurus T Tauri stars, in which case for some of our WTTS an age on the order of 10^7^years would be required for reaching the observed distances from the Taurus dark clouds. We estimate a WTTS/CTTS ratio of about 6 within our study area, but conclude that because of the different spatial distribution of WTTS and CTTS this ratio will be most probably significantly larger for a more extended area.

- We present first results obtained by a survey of the Lupus star forming region in search of new T Tauri stars. This study has been performed on the basis of deep pointed ROSAT observations in the Lupus dark clouds as well as data from the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey in the surrounding, less obscured regions. Our survey covers an area of about 230 square degrees, located between 15^h^6^m^ and 16^h^24^m^ in right ascension and between -47{deg} and -32{deg} in declination. Identification of ROSAT All-Sky-Survey sources in this area by means of optical spectroscopy revealed 89 T Tauri stars, 86 of them "weak-line" T Tauri stars (WTTS not known from previous studies of this region. Our pointed ROSAT observations led to the identification of 47 more T Tauri stars, giving a total of 136 new T Tauri stars. The large area of our study, as compared with previous works, allows us to study the spatial distribution of WTTS in this star forming region on alarge scale. We find the new WTTS to be distributed over the whole area of our survey, indicating that their spatial distribution might extend well beyond our study area. Contrary to the Lupus T Tauri stars known prior to this study, the WTTS discovered by the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey are not clustered in the regions of highest extinction, i.e. the dark clouds.

- We present results of an extensive search for weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) in the outskirts of the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud on the basis of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (Cat. <IX/10>). Our surveyed region extends from 2h 40m to 5h 40m in right ascension and from 10deg to 40deg in declination, with the central part of Taurus-Auriga(4h<{alpha}<5h, 15deg<{delta}<34deg), accomplished by Wichmann et al. (1996, Cat. <J/A+A/312/439>), excluded. Within a sky coverage of about 10$^{3}$ square degrees, 219 X-ray sources fullfill the criteria for selecting program sources suggested by Neuhauser et al. (1995A&A...295L...5N) and 164 of these X-ray sources were found to have at least one optical counterpart with E magnitude brighter than 16. Low-resolution spectroscopic observation has been carried out in order to discard early type stars and galaxies from the sample, additional intermediate-resolution spectra of a sub-sample of 156 late type optical counterparts were obtained for spectral classification and for the calculation of the equivalent width of H{alpha} emission and LiI line absorption at 6707{AA}. Excluding 2 previously identified WTTS, a total of 75 new candidate WTTS and one possible classical T Tauri star have been discovered in our study. The majority of the newly found Li-rich optical counterparts are believed to b e PMS stars rather than ZAMS stars as those of the Pleiades.

- We present results from a study of the supernova remnant (SNR) population in a sample of six nearby galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 4395, and NGC 5204) based on Chandra archival data. We have detected 244 discrete X-ray sources down to a limiting flux of 10^-15^ erg/s/cm^2^. We identify 37 X-ray-selected thermal SNRs based on their X-ray colors or spectra, 30 of which are new discoveries. In many cases, the X-ray classification is confirmed based on counterparts with SNRs identified in other wavelengths. Three of the galaxies in our sample (NGC 4214, NGC 4395, and NGC 5204) are studied for the first time, resulting in the discovery of 13 thermal SNRs. We discuss the properties (luminosity, temperature, and density) of the X-ray-detected SNRs in the galaxies of our sample in order to address their dependence on their environment. We find that X-ray-selected SNRs in irregular galaxies appear to be more luminous than those in spirals. We attribute this to the lower metallicities and therefore more massive progenitor stars of irregular galaxies or the higher local densities of the interstellar medium. We also discuss the X-ray-selected SNR populations in the context of the star formation rate of their host galaxies. A comparison of the numbers of observed luminous X-ray-selected SNRs with those expected based on the luminosity functions of X-ray SNRs in the Magellanic Clouds and M33 suggest different luminosity distributions between the SNRs in spiral and irregular galaxies with the latter tending to have flatter distributions.

- We present a final summary of all ROSAT X-ray observations of nearby stars. All available ROSAT observations with the ROSAT PSPC, HRI and WFC have been matched with the CNS4 catalog of nearby stars and the results gathered in the NEarby X-ray and XUV-emitting Stars (NEXXUS) data base. New volume-limited samples of F/G-stars (table 1), K-stars (table 2), and M-stars (table 3) are constructed within which detection rates of more than 90% are obtained.

- We aim to measure the physical properties of the hot X-ray corona of two active galactic nuclei, NGC 4388 and NGC 2110. We analysed the hard X-ray (20-300keV) INTEGRAL spectrum in conjunction with archival XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data. The X-ray spectrum of both sources is phenomenologically well described by an absorbed cut-off power law. In agreement with previous results, we find no evidence of a Compton reflection component in these sources. We obtain a high-energy cut-off of 200_-40_^+75^keV for NGC 4388 and 320_-60_^+100^keV for NGC 2110. A fit with a thermal Comptonisation model yields a coronal temperature of 80_-20_^+40^keV and 75_-15_^+20^keV, respectively, and an optical depth of approximately two, assuming a spherical geometry. The coronal temperature and luminosity of both sources are consistent with pair production that acts as a thermostat for the thermal plasma. These results emphasise the importance of good signal-to-noise X-ray data above 100keV to probe the high-energy emission of AGNs.

- We present a multi-wavelength study (from X-ray to mm) of the nearby low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) NGC 7213. We combine the information from the different bands to characterise the source in terms of contribution from the AGN and the host-galaxy interstellar medium (ISM). This approach allows us to provide a coherent picture of the role of the AGN and its impact, if any, on the star formation and molecular gas properties of the host galaxy. We focused our study on archival ALMA Cycle 1 observations, where the CO(2-1) emission line has been used as a tracer of the molecular gas. Using the 3DBarolo code on ALMA data, we performed the modelling of the molecular gas kinematics traced by the CO(2-1) emission, finding a rotationally dominated pattern. The molecular gas mass of the host galaxy was estimated from the integrated CO(2-1) emission line obtained with APEX data, assuming an alpha_co conversion factor. Had we used the ALMA data, we would have underestimated the gas masses by a factor ~3, given the filtering out of the large-scale emission in interferometric observations. We also performed a complete X-ray spectral analysis on archival observations, revealing a relatively faint and unobscured AGN. The AGN proved to be too faint to significantly affect the properties of the host galaxy, such as star formation activity and molecular gas kinematics and distribution.

- We present the results of a Chandra/Hubble Space Telescope (HST) study of the point sources of the Virgo Cluster giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. We identify 144 X-ray point sources outside the nuclear region, 72 of which are located within the HST fields. The optical data show 1102 sources, of which 829 have colors consistent with being globular clusters (with only four in the restricted central 10" region). Thirty matches are found between the two lists - these are likely to be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with globular clusters, while ~42 of the X-ray sources have no optical counterparts to V<~25 and I<~24, indicating that they are likely to be predominantly LMXBs in the field star population with a small amount of possible contamination from background active galactic nuclei. Thus approximately 40% of the X-ray sources are in globular clusters and 4% of the globular clusters contain X-ray sources.

- The outer Galaxy, where the environmental conditions are different from the solar neighbourhood is a laboratory in which it is possible to investigate the dependence of star formation process on the environmental parameters. We investigate the X-ray properties of NGC 1893, a young cluster (~1-2Myr) in the outer part of the Galaxy (galactic radius >=11kpc) where we expect differences in the disk evolution and in the mass distribution of the stars, to explore the X-ray emission of its members and compare it with that of young stars in star forming regions near to the Sun.
