- The Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy is the only galaxy of this type that shows clearly episodic star formation separated by long pauses. Here we present metallicities for 437 radial velocity members of this Galactic satellite. The metallicities and radial velocities were measured as part of a Large Programme with the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory, Chile. We obtained medium-resolution spectroscopy with the multiobject spectrograph FLAMES. Our target red giants cover the entire projected surface area of Carina. Our spectra are centered at the near-infrared CaII triplet, which is a well-established metallicity indicator for old and intermediate-age red giants. The resulting data sample provides the largest collection of spectroscopically derived metallicities for a Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy to date.

- We present the results of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting analysis for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~5 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) and its flanking fields (the GOODS-FF). With the publicly available Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) images in the GOODS-N and IRAC data in the GOODS-FF, we constructed the rest-frame UV to optical SEDs for a large sample (~100) of UV-selected galaxies at z~5. Comparing the observed SEDs with model SEDs generated with a population synthesis code, we derived a best-fit set of parameters (stellar mass, age, color excess, and star formation rate) for each of the sample LBGs. The derived stellar masses range from 10^8^ to 10^11^M_{sun}_ with a median value of 4.1x10^9^M_{sun}_.

- We use the Herschel-ATLAS survey to conduct the first large-scale statistical study of the submillimetre properties of optically selected galaxies. Using ~80000 r-band selected galaxies from 126deg^2^ of the GAMA survey, we stack into submillimetre imaging at 250, 350 and 500um to gain unprecedented statistics on the dust emission from galaxies at z<0.35. We find that low-redshift galaxies account for 5 per cent of the cosmic 250-um background (4 per cent at 350um; 3 per cent at 500um), of which approximately 60 per cent comes from 'blue' and 20 per cent from 'red' galaxies (rest-frame g-r).

- The statistical analysis of large sample of strong lensing events can be a powerful tool to extract astrophysical or cosmological valuable information. Their selection using submillimetre galaxies has been demonstrated to be very effective with more than ~200 proposed candidates in the case of Herschel-ATLAS data and several tens in the case of the South Pole Telescope. However, the number of confirmed events is still relatively low, i.e. a few tens, mostly because of the lengthy observational validation process on individual events. In this work we propose a new methodology with a statistical selection approach to increase by a factor of ~5 the number of such events within the Herschel-ATLAS data set. Although the methodology can be applied to address several selection problems, it has particular benefits in the case of the identification of strongly lensed galaxies: objectivity, minimal initial constrains in the main parameter space, and preservation of statistical properties. The proposed methodology is based on the Bhattacharyya distance as a measure of the similarity between probability distributions of properties of two different cross-matched galaxies. The particular implementation for the aim of this work is called SHALOS and it combines the information of four different properties of the pair of galaxies: angular separation, luminosity percentile, redshift, and the ratio of the optical to the submillimetre flux densities. The SHALOS method provides a ranked list of strongly lensed galaxies. The number of candidates within ~340{deg}^2^ of the Herschel-ATLAS surveyed area for the final associated probability, P_tot_>0.7, is 447 and they have an estimated mean amplification factor of 3.12 for a halo with a typical cluster mass. Additional statistical properties of the SHALOS candidates, as the correlation function or the source number counts, are in agreement with previous results indicating the statistical lensing nature of the selected sample.

- We present the results of spectroscopy of 71 objects with steep and ultra-steep spectra (alpha<-0.9, S{prop.to}nu^alpha^) from the "Big Trio" (RATAN-600-VLA-BTA) project, performed with the "Scorpio" spectrograph on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russian Academy of Sciences). Redshifts were determined for these objects. We also present several other parameters of the sources, such as their R magnitudes, maximum radio sizes in seconds of arc, flux densities at 500, 1425, and 3940MHz, radio luminosities at 500 and 3940MHz, and morphology. Of the total number of radio galaxies studied, four have redshifts 1<=z<2, three have 2<=z<3, one has 3<=z<4, and one has z=4.51. Thirteen sources have redshifts 0.7<z<1 and 15 have 0.2<z<0.7. Of all the quasars studied, five have redshifts 0.7<z<1, seven have 1<=z<2, four have 2<=z<3, and one has z=3.57. We did not detect any spectral lines for 17 objects.

- We report the case of the early-type disk galaxy NGC 4672 as a new example of a galaxy characterized by the orthogonal geometrical decoupling between bulge and disk. The morphological features of this galaxy are discussed as well as the velocity curves and velocity dispersion profiles of stars and ionized gas along both its major and minor axis. We conclude that NGC 4672 has structural (i.e. a bulge elongated perpendicularly to the disk) and kinematical (i.e. a stellar core rotating perpendicularly to the disk) properties similar to those of the Sa NGC 4698. The presence of the isolated core suggests that the disk component is the end result of the acquisition of external material in polar orbits around a pre-existing oblate spheroid as in the case of the ring component of AM 2020-504, the prototype of polar ring ellipticals.

- We present major and minor-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas as well as narrow and broad-band surface photometry of the Sa spiral NGC 2855. In the nuclear regions of this unbarred and apparently undisturbed spiral galaxy the gas is rotating perpendicularly to the galaxy disk. We suggest that this kinematically-decoupled component is the signature of an acquisition process in the history of this galaxy.

- We measure {lambda}_Re_, a proxy for galaxy specific stellar angular momentum within one effective radius, and the ellipticity, {epsilon}, for about 2300 galaxies of all morphological types observed with integral field spectroscopy as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey, the largest such sample to date. We use the ({lambda}_Re_, {epsilon}) diagram to separate early-type galaxies into fast and slow rotators. We also visually classify each galaxy according to its optical morphology and two-dimensional stellar velocity field. Comparing these classifications to quantitative {lambda}_Re_ measurements reveals tight relationships between angular momentum and galaxy structure. In order to account for atmospheric seeing, we use realistic models of galaxy kinematics to derive a general approximate analytic correction for {lambda}_Re_. Thanks to the size of the sample and the large number of massive galaxies, we unambiguously detect a clear bimodality in the ({lambda}_Re_, {epsilon}) diagram which may result from fundamental differences in galaxy assembly history. There is a sharp secondary density peak inside the region of the diagram with low {lambda}_Re_ and {epsilon}<0.4, previously suggested as the definition for slow rotators. Most of these galaxies are visually classified as non-regular rotators and have high velocity dispersion. The intrinsic bimodality must be stronger, as it tends to be smoothed by noise and inclination. The large sample of slow rotators allows us for the first time to unveil a secondary peak at +/-90{deg} in their distribution of the misalignments between the photometric and kinematic position angles. We confirm that genuine slow rotators start appearing above M>=2x10^11^M_{sun}_ where a significant number of high-mass fast rotators also exist.

- Using data acquired as part of a unique Hubble Heritage imaging program of broadband colors of the interacting spiral system M51/NGC5195, we have conducted a photometric study of the stellar associations across the entire disk of the galaxy in order to assess trends in size, luminosity, and local environment associated with the recent star formation (SF) activity in the system. Starting with a sample of over 900 potential associations, we have produced color-magnitude and color-color diagrams for the 120 associations that were deemed to be single-aged.
