- The ISOGAL PSC data have been associated with near-infrared 2MASS sources, consisting a five-band photometric catalogue. In comparison with the ISOGAL-DENIS PSC catalogue, the number of fields in the ISOGAL-2MASS PSC is increased by 43 thanks to the 2MASS inclusion of the northern ISOGAL field. This point source catalogue contains all parameters of 7{mu}m or 15{mu}m from the ISOGAL PSC, together with the J H Ks bands data from the 2MASS All-Sky PSC (see the paper for a complete description). Based on the ISOGAL-2MASS PSC, the extinction laws at 7{mu}m and 15{mu}m are derived for more than 120 sightlines in the inner Galactic plane. The extinction values at 7{mu}m and 15{mu}m were in terms of the near-infrared extinction in the Ks band. The ratios that E(Ks-[7])/E(J-Ks) and E(Ks-[7])/E(Ks-[15]) are also displayed in the tables (see the paper for a complete description).

- The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec-scale resolution of 90GHz line emission from massive molecular clumps in the Milky Way. We present the first Mopra (ATNF) maps of the CHaMP survey region (300{deg}>l>280{deg}) in the HCO^+^J=1->0 line, which is usually thought to trace gas at densities up to 10^11^m^-3^. In this paper, we introduce the survey and its strategy, describe the observational and data reduction procedures, and give a complete catalog of moment maps of the HCO^+^J=1->0 emission from the ensemble of 303 massive molecular clumps. From these maps we also derive the physical parameters of the clumps, using standard molecular spectral-line analysis techniques.

- Despite significant evidence suggesting that intermediate- and high-mass stars form in clustered environments, how stars form when the available resources are shared is still not well understood. A related question is whether the initial mass function (IMF) is in fact universal across galactic environments, or whether it is an average of IMFs that differ, for example, in massive versus low-mass molecular clouds. One of the long-standing problems in resolving these questions and in the study of young clusters is observational: how to accurately combine multiwavelength data sets obtained using telescopes with different spatial resolutions. The resulting confusion hinders our ability to fully characterize clustered star formation. Here we present a new method that uses Bayesian inference to fit the blended spectral energy distributions and images of individual young stellar objects (YSOs) in confused clusters. We apply this method to the infrared photometry of a sample comprising 70 Spitzer-selected, low-mass (M_cl_<100M_{sun}_) young clusters in the galactic plane, and we use the derived physical parameters to investigate how the distribution of YSO masses within each cluster relates to the total mass of the cluster. We find that for low-mass clusters this distribution is indistinguishable from a randomly sampled Kroupa IMF for this range of cluster masses. Therefore, any effects of self-regulated star formation that affect the IMF sampling are likely to play a role only at larger cluster masses. Our results are also compatible with smoothed particle hydrodynamics models that predict a dynamical termination of the accretion in protostars, with massive stars undergoing this stopping at later times in their evolution.

- We analyze molecular-gas formation in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) clouds using the latest CO data, obtained from the FOREST (four-beam receiver system on the 45m telescope) unbiased Galactic plane imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45m telescope, and using HI data taken from the Very Large Array Galactic plane survey. We applied a dendrogram algorithm to the HI data cube to identify HI clouds, and we calculated the HI mass and molecular-gas mass by summing the CO line intensity within each HI cloud. On the basis of the results, we created a catalog of 5737 identified HI clouds with local standard of rest (LSR) velocity of VLSR<=-20km/s in galactic longitude and latitude ranges of 20{deg}<=l<=50{deg} and -1{deg}<=b<=1{deg}, respectively. We found that most of the HI clouds are distributed within a Galactocentric distance of 16kpc, and most of them are in the cold neutral medium phase. In addition, we determined that the high-mass end of the HI mass function is fitted well with a power-law function with an index of 2.3. Although two sequences of self-gravitating and diffuse clouds are expected to appear in the M_tot_-M_H2_ diagram according to previous works based on a plane-parallel model, the observational data show only a single sequence with large scattering within these two sequences. This implies that most of the clouds are mixtures of these two types of clouds. Moreover, we suggest the following scenario of molecular-gas formation: an HI-dominant cloud evolved with increasing H2 mass along a path of M_H2_{prop.to}M^2^_tot_ by collecting diffuse gas before reaching and moving along the curves of the two sequences.

- We analyse the residuals to the fundamental plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies as a function of stellar-population indicators; these are based on the line-strength parameter Mg2 and on UBVRI broad-band colors, and are partly derived from new observations. The effect of the stellar populations accounts for approximately half the observed variation of the mass-to-light ratio responsible for the FP tilt. The residual tilt can be explained by the contribution of two additional effects: the dependence of the rotational support, and possibly that of the spatial structure, on the luminosity. We conclude to a constancy of the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio. This probably extends to globular clusters as well, but the dominant factor would be here the luminosity dependence of the structure rather than that of the stellar population. This result also implies a constancy of the fraction of dark matter over all the scalelength covered by stellar systems. Our compilation of internal stellar kinematics of galaxies is appended.

- Faint, hidden contaminants in the point-spread functions (PSFs) of stars cause shifts to their measured positions. Wilson & Naylor (2017MNRAS.468.2517W) showed failing to account for these shifts can lead to a drastic decrease in the number of returned catalogue matches in crowded fields. Here we highlight the effect these perturbations have on cross-matching, for matches between Gaia DR2 and WISE stars in a crowded Galactic plane region. Applying the uncertainties as quoted to Gaussian-based astrometric uncertainty functions (AUFs) can lead, in dense Galactic fields, to only matching 55% of the counterparts. We describe the construction of empirical descriptions for AUFs, building on the cross-matching method of Wilson & Naylor (2018MNRAS.473.5570W), utilising the magnitudes of both catalogues to discriminate between true and false counterparts. We apply the improved cross-matching method to the Galactic plane |b|<10. We provide the most likely counterpart matches and their respective probabilities. We also analyse several cases to verify the robustness of the results, highlighting some important caveats and considerations. Finally, we discuss the effect PSF resolution has by comparing the intra- catalogue nearest neighbour separation distributions of a sample of likely contaminated WISE objects and their corresponding Spitzer counterpart. We show that some WISE contaminants are resolved in Spitzer, with smaller intra-catalogue separations. We have highlighted the effect contaminant stars have on WISE, but it is important for all photometric catalogues, playing an important role in the next generation of surveys, such as LSST.

- We present a catalogue of point-like H{alpha}-excess sources in the Northern Galactic Plane. Our catalogue is created using a new technique that leverages astrometric and photometric information from Gaia to select H{alpha}-bright outliers in the INT Photometric H{alpha} Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS), across the colour-absolute magnitude diagram. To mitigate the selection biases due to stellar population mixing and to extinction, the investigated objects are first partitioned with respect to their positions in the Gaia colour-absolute magnitude space, and in the Galactic coordinates space, respectively. The selection is then performed on both partition types independently. Two significance parameters are assigned to each target, one for each partition type. These represent a quantitative degree of confidence that the given source is a reliable H{alpha}-excess candidate, with reference to the other objects in the corresponding partition. Our catalogue provides two flags for each source, both indicating the significance level of the H{alpha}-excess. By analysing their intensity in the H{alpha} narrow band, 28496 objects out of 7474835 are identified as H{alpha}-excess candidates with a significance higher than 3. The completeness fraction of the H{alpha} outliers selection is between 3% and 5%. The suggested 5sigma conservative cut yields a purity fraction of 81.9%.

- We present a sub-arcsecond cross-match of Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345) against the INT Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane Data Release 2 (IPHAS DR2, Cat. II/321) and the Kepler-INT Survey (KIS, Cat. J/AJ/144/24). The resulting value-added catalogues (VACs) provide additional precise photometry to the Gaia photometry (r, i and H-alpha for IPHAS, with additional U and g for KIS). In building the catalogue, proper motions given in Gaia DR2 are wound back to match the epochs of IPHAS DR2, thus ensuring high proper motion objects are appropriately cross-matched. The catalogues contain 7927224 and 791071 sources for IPHAS and KIS, respectively. The requirement of >5 sigma parallax detection for every included source means that distances out to 1-1.5kpc are well covered. We define two additional parameters for each catalogued object: (i) fc, a magnitude-dependent tracer of the quality of the Gaia astrometric fit; (ii) fFP, the false-positive rate for parallax measurements determined from astrometric fits of a given quality at a given magnitude. Selection cuts based on these parameters can be used to clean colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams in a controlled and justified manner. We provide both full and light versions of the VAC, with VAC-light containing only objects that represent our recommended trade-off between purity and completeness. Uses of the catalogues include the identification of new variable stars in the matched data sets, and more complete identification of H-alpha-excess emission objects thanks to separation of high-luminosity stars from the main sequence.

- It is still unclear whether the Sagittarius spiral arm is a major spiral arm in the Galaxy or whether it just outlines a region of enhanced star formation because of the local compression of gas. The best way to separate these scenarios out is to study the kinematics across the arm to determine the velocity perturbation it induces. A survey of early-type stars in the direction of the Galactic center is performed covering an area of 100 sq. deg with the aim of identifying candidates for a radial velocity study. Objective prism plates were obtained with the 4{deg} prism on the ESO Schmidt telescope using IIaO, 4415, and IIIaJ emulsions. The plates were digitized and more than 100k spectra were extracted down to a limiting magnitude of B=15m. The spectra were cross-correlated with a template with Balmer lines, which yielded a candidate list of 12675 early-type stars. Magnitudes and equivalent widths of strong lines were calculated from the spectra, which allowed us to estimate the individual extinctions and distances for 11075 stars.

- Galactic infrared (IR) bubbles, which have shell-like structures in the mid-IR wavelengths, are known to contain massive stars near their centers. Infrared bubbles in inner Galactic regions (|l|<=65{deg}, |b|<=1{deg}) have so far been studied well to understand the massive star formation mechanisms. In this study, we expand the research area to the whole Galactic plane (0{deg}<=l<360{deg}, |b|<=5{deg}), using the AKARI all-sky survey data. We limit our study to large bubbles with angular radii of >1' to reliably identify and characterize them. For the 247 IR bubbles in total, we derived the radii and the covering fractions of the shells, based on the method developed by Y. Hattori et al. (2016PASJ...68...37H). We also created their spectral energy distributions, using the AKARI and Herschel photometric data, and decomposed them with a dust model to obtain the total IR luminosity and the luminosity of each dust component, i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), warm dust, and cold dust. As a result, we find that there are systematic differences in the IR properties of the bubbles between the inner and outer Galactic regions. The total IR luminosities are lower in outer Galactic regions, while there is no systematic difference in the range of the shell radii between inner and outer Galactic regions. More IR bubbles tend to be observed as broken bubbles rather than closed ones and the fractional luminosities of the PAH emission are significantly higher in outer Galactic regions. We discuss the implications of these results for the massive stars and the interstellar environments associated with the Galactic IR bubbles.
