- The VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC) is collecting deep Ks-band time-series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper, we have analysed a sample of 130 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Type II Cepheids (T2CEPs) found in tiles with complete or near-complete VMC observations for which identification and optical magnitudes were obtained from the OGLE III (Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment) survey. We present J and Ks light curves for all 130 pulsators, including 41 BL Her, 62 W Vir (12 pW Vir) and 27 RV Tau variables. We complement our near-infrared photometry with the V magnitudes from the OGLE III survey, allowing us to build a variety of period-luminosity (PL), period-luminosity-colour (PLC) and period-Wesenheit (PW) relationships, including any combination of the V, J, Ks filters and valid for BL Her and W Vir classes. These relationships were calibrated in terms of the LMC distance modulus, while an independent absolute calibration of the PL(Ks) and the PW(Ks, V) was derived on the basis of distances obtained from Hubble Space Telescope parallaxes and Baade-Wesselink technique. When applied to the LMC and to the Galactic globular clusters hosting T2CEPs, these relations seem to show that (1) the two Population II standard candles RR Lyrae and T2CEPs give results in excellent agreement with each other; (2) there is a discrepancy of ~0.1mag between Population II standard candles and classical Cepheids when the distances are gauged in a similar way for all the quoted pulsators. However, given the uncertainties, this discrepancy is within the formal 1{sigma} uncertainties.

- JHKs magnitudes corrected to mean intensity are estimated for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) type II Cepheids in the OGLE-III survey the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Period-luminosity (PL) relations are derived in JHKs as well as in a reddening-free VI parameter. Within the uncertainties, the BL Her stars (P<4d) and the W Vir stars (P=4 to 20d) are colinear in these PL relations. The slopes of the infrared relations agree with those found previously for type II Cepheids in globular clusters within the uncertainties.

- We analysed Washington CMT1 photometry of star clusters located along the minor axis of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), from the LMC optical centre up to ~39{deg} outwards to the North-West. The data base was exploited in order to search for new star cluster candidates, to produce cluster CMDs cleaned from field star contamination and to derive age estimates for a statistically complete cluster sample. We confirmed that 146 star cluster candidates are genuine physical systems, and concluded that an overall ~30 per cent of catalogued clusters in the surveyed regions are unlikely to be true physical systems. We did not find any new cluster candidates in the outskirts of the LMC (deprojected distance >~8{deg}). The derived ages of the studied clusters are in the range 7.2<log(t[yr^-1^])<=9.4, with the sole exception of the globular cluster NGC 1786 (log(t[yr^-1^])=10.10). We also calculated the cluster frequency for each region, from which we confirmed previously proposed outside-in formation scenarios. In addition, we found that the outer LMC fields show a sudden episode of cluster formation (log(t[yr^-1^])~7.8-7.9) which continued until log(t[yr^-1^])~7.3 only in the outermost LMC region. We link these features to the first pericentre passage of the LMC to the Milky Way (MW), which could have triggered cluster formation due to ram pressure interaction between the LMC and MW halo.

- We present an astrometry and photometry catalogue of globular cluster (GC) candidates detected with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in a sample of 19 early-type galaxies, appropriate for comparison with the low-mass X-ray binary populations observed with Chandra. In a companion paper (Cat. J/ApJ/689/983), we present the Chandra data and investigate the relation between these populations. We demonstrate that, although there is little evidence of a color-magnitude correlation for the GCs, after estimating mass and metallicity from the photometry under the assumption of a single-age simple stellar population, there is a significant positive correlation between mass and metallicity.

- We present an analysis of LMXBs and GCs in five early-type galaxies using Chandra X-ray and HST optical data. Of the 186 LMXBs within the optical fields of view, 71 are in GCs, confirming that LMXBs are formed particularly efficiently in clusters due to dynamical interactions.

- We report the first BV light curves and high-resolution spectra of the post-mass transfer binary star WASP0131+28 to study the absolute properties of extremely low-mass white dwarfs. From the observed spectra, the double-lined radial velocities were derived, and the effective temperature and rotational velocity of the brighter, more massive primary were found to be Teff_1_=10000{+/-]200K and v_1_sin_i_=55{+/-}10km/s, respectively. The combined analysis of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) archive data and ours yielded the accurate fundamental parameters of the program target. The masses were derived to about 1.0% accuracy and the radii to 0.6%, or better. The secondary component's parameters of M_2_=0.200{+/-}0.002M_{sun}_, R_2_=0.528{+/-}0.003R_{sun}_, Teff_2_=11186{+/-}235K, and L_2_=3.9{+/-}0.3L_{sun}_ are in excellent agreement with the evolutionary sequence for a helium-core white dwarf of mass 0.203M_{sun}, and indicates that this star is halfway through the constant luminosity phase. The results presented in this article demonstrate that WASP0131+28 is an EL CVn eclipsing binary in a thin disk, which is formed from the stable Roche-lobe overflow channel and composed of a main-sequence dwarf with a spectral type A0 and a pre-He white dwarf.

- We present kinematic and metallicity profiles for the M 31 dwarf elliptical (dE) satellite galaxies NGC 147 and NGC 185. The profiles represent the most extensive spectroscopic radial coverage for any dE galaxy, extending to a projected distance of 8 half-light radii (8r_eff_~14'). We achieve this coverage via Keck/DEIMOS multislit spectroscopic observations of 520 and 442 member red giant branch stars in NGC 147 and NGC 185, respectively. In contrast to previous studies, we find that both dEs have significant internal rotation. We measure a maximum rotational velocity of 17+/-2km/s for NGC 147 and 15+/-5km/s for NGC 185. The velocity dispersions decrease gently with radius with average dispersions of 16+/-1km/s and 24+/-1km/s for NGC 147 and NGC 185, respectively. The average metallicities for NGC 147 and NGC 185 are [Fe/H]=-1.1+/-0.1 and [Fe/H]=-1.3+/-0.1, respectively; both dEs have internal metallicity dispersions of 0.5dex, but show no evidence for a radial metallicity gradient.

- We study a set of 3319 galaxies in the redshift interval 0.04<z<0.15 Herschel/SPIRE 250{mu}m band. Total infrared (TIR) luminosities derived from HerS and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometry allow us to compare infrared and optical estimates of SFR with unprecedented statistics for diverse classes of galaxies. We find excellent agreement between TIR-derived and emission line-based SFRs for H ii galaxies. Other classes, such as active galaxies and evolved galaxies, exhibit systematic discrepancies between optical and TIR SFRs. We demonstrate that these offsets are attributable primarily to survey biases and the large intrinsic uncertainties of the D_n_4000- and colour-based optical calibrations used to estimate the SDSS SFRs of these galaxies. Using a classification scheme which expands upon popular emission-line methods, we demonstrate that emission-line galaxies with uncertain classifications include a population of massive, dusty, metal-rich star-forming systems that are frequently neglected in existing studies. We also study the capabilities of infrared selection of star-forming galaxies. FIR selection reveals a substantial population of galaxies dominated by cold dust which are missed by the long-wavelength WISE bands. Our results demonstrate that Herschel large-area surveys offer the means to construct large, relatively complete samples of local star-forming galaxies with accurate estimates of SFR that can be used to study the interplay between nuclear activity and star formation.

- Recent studies found a correlation with ~3{sigma} significance between the local star formation measured by GALEX in SN Ia host galaxies and the distances or dispersions derived from these SNe. We search for these effects by using data from recent cosmological analyses to greatly increase the SN Ia sample; we include 179 GALEX-imaged SN Ia hosts with distances from the Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA) and Pan-STARRS SN Ia cosmology samples and 157 GALEX-imaged SN Ia hosts with distances from the Riess et al. (2011, J/ApJ/730/119) H_0_ measurement. We find little evidence that SNe Ia in locally star-forming environments are fainter after light curve correction than SNe Ia in locally passive environments. We find a difference of 0.000+/-0.018 (stat+sys) mag for SNe fit with SALT2 and 0.029+/-0.027 (stat+sys) mag for SNe fit with MLCS2k2 (R_V_=2.5), which suggests that proposed changes to recent measurements of H_0_ and w are not significant and numerically smaller than the parameter measurement uncertainties. We measure systematic uncertainties of ~0.01-0.02mag by performing several plausible variants of our analysis. We find the greatly reduced significance of these distance modulus differences compared to Rigault et al. (2013A&A...560A..66R) results from two improvements with fairly equal effects, our larger sample size and the use of the JLA and Riess et al. sample selection criteria. Without these improvements, we recover the results of Rigault et al. We find that both populations have similar dispersions in distance than found by Rigault et al. and Kelly et al. (2015Sci...347.1459K), with slightly smaller dispersions for locally passive (log({Sigma}_SFR_)<-2.9dex) SNe Ia fit with MLCS, the opposite of the effect seen by Rigault et al. and Kelly et al. We caution that measuring the local environments of SNe Ia in the future may require a higher resolution instrument than GALEX and that SN Ia sample selection has a significant effect on local star formation biases.
