- The AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS H{alpha} Survey (SHS) was, when completed in 2003, a powerful addition to extant wide-field surveys. The combination of areal coverage, spatial resolution and sensitivity in a narrow imaging band, still marks it out today as an excellent resource for the astronomical community. The 233 separate fields are available online in digital form, with each field covering 25deg^2^. The SHS has been the motivation for equivalent surveys in the north, and new digital H{alpha} surveys now beginning in the south such as VPHAS+. It has been the foundation of many important discovery projects with the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H{alpha} planetary nebula project being a particularly successful example. However, the full potential of the SHS has been hampered by lack of a clear route to acceptable flux calibration from the base photographic data. We have determined the calibration factors for 170 individual SHS fields, and present a direct pathway to the measurement of integrated H{alpha} fluxes and surface brightnesses for resolved nebulae detected in the SHS. We also include a catalogue of integrated H{alpha} fluxes for >100 planetary and other nebulae measured from the SHS, and use these data to show that fluxes, accurate to +/-0.10-0.14dex (~25-35%), can be obtained from these fields. For the remaining 63 fields, a mean calibration factor of 12.0 counts/pixel/R can be used, allowing the determination of reasonable integrated fluxes accurate to better than +/-0.2dex (~50%). We outline the procedures involved and the caveats that need to be appreciated in achieving such flux measurements. This paper forms a handy reference source that will significantly increase the scientific utility of the SHS.

- We present a method for distance calibration without using standard fitting procedures. Instead, we use random resampling to reconstruct the probability density function (PDF) of calibration data points in the fitting plane. The resulting PDF is then used to estimate distance-related properties. The method is applied to samples of radio surface brightness to diameter ({Sigma}-D}) data for the Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) and planetary nebulae (PNe), and period-luminosity (PL) data for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) fundamental mode classical Cepheids. We argue that resulting density maps can provide more accurate and more reliable calibrations than those obtained by standard linear fitting procedures. For the selected sample of the Galactic SNRs, the presented PDF method of distance calibration results in a smaller average distance fractional error of up to ~16 percentage points. Similarly, the fractional error is smaller for up to ~8 and ~0.5 percentage points, for the samples of Galactic PNe and LMC Cepheids, respectively. In addition, we provide a PDF-based calibration data for each of the samples.

- We have carried out a semi-automated search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the INT Photometric H-Alpha Survey (IPHAS) catalogue. We present the PN search and the list of selected candidates. We cross correlate the selected candidates with a number of existing infrared galactic surveys in order to gain further insight into the nature of the candidates. Spectroscopy of a subset of objects is used to estimate the number of PNe present in the entire candidate list. The overall aim of the IPHAS PN project is to carry out a deep census of PNe in the northern Galactic plane, an area where PN detections are clearly lacking. The PN search is carried out on the IPHAS photometric catalogues. The candidate selection is based on the IPHAS and 2MASS/UKIDSS colours of the objects and the final candidate selection is made visually.

- [OIII]5007 Angstroms on-band off-band images, obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and FORS2 spectrograph in two zones (center and outskirts) of the spiral galaxy NGC300, are analyzed searching for emission line objects. In particular we search for planetary nebula (PN) candidates to analyze their distribution and luminosity properties, to perform follow-up spectroscopy, and to study the planetary nebula luminosity function, PNLF. In the continuum-subtracted images, a large number of emission line objects were detected. From this sample we selected as PN candidates those objects with stellar appearance and no detectable central star. [OIII]5007 instrumental magnitudes were measured and calibrated by using spectrophotometric data from the follow-up spectroscopy.We have identified more than a hundred PN candidates and a number of compact HII regions. The PN sample is the largest one reported for this galaxy so far. For all the objects we present coordinates, instrumental [OIII]5007 magnitudes and apparent nebular [OIII]5007 fluxes and magnitudes. The [OIII]5007 observed luminosity function for PNe (PNLF) was calculated for the whole sample and for the central and outskirts samples. The three PNLF are similar within uncertainties. We fit the empirical PNLF to the observed PNLF for all the samples. From our best fit for the whole sample we derived a maximum value for the apparent magnitudes of m_star(5007)_=22.019+/-0.022 and we obtained a tentative estimate of the distance modulus m(5007)-M(5007)=26.29^+0.12^_-0.22_mag, which agrees well with the recent value derived from Cepheid stars.

- The "Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (Version 2000)" appears in Abhandlungen aus der Hamburger Sternwarte, Band XII in the year 2001. It is a continuation of CGPN(1967) and contains 1510 objects classified as galactic PNe up to the end of 1999. The lists of possible pre-PNe and possible post-PNe are also given. The catalogue is restricted only to the data belonging to the location and identification of the objects. It gives identification charts of PNe discovered since 1965 (published in the supplements to CGPN) and those charts of objects discovered earlier, which have wrong or uncertain identification. The question "what is a planetary nebula" is discussed and the typical values of PNe and of their central stars are summarized. Short statistics about the discoveries of PNe are given. The catalogue is also available in the Centre de Donnees, Strasbourg and at Hamburg Observatory via internet.

- Planetary nebulae represent a potential late stage of stellar evolution, however, their central stars (CSPNe) are relatively faint and, therefore, pertinent information is available for merely <20% of the Galactic sample. Consequently, the literature was surveyed to construct a new catalogue of 620 CSPNe featuring important spectral classifications and information. The catalogue supersedes the existing iteration by 25% and includes physical parameters such as luminosity, surface gravity, temperature, magnitude estimates, and references for published spectra. The marked statistical improvement enabled the following pertinent conclusions to be determined: the H-rich/H-poor ratio is 2:1, there is a deficiency of CSPNe with types [WC 5-6], and nearly 80% of binary central stars belong to the H-rich group. The last finding suggests that evolutionary scenarios leading to the formation of binary central stars interfere with the conditions required for the formation of H-poor CSPN. Approximately 50% of the sample with derived values of logL, logT_eff_, and logg, exhibit masses and ages consistent with single stellar evolutionary models. The implication is that single stars are indeed able to form planetary nebulae. Moreover, it is shown that H-poor CSPNe are formed by higher mass progenitors.

- There are more than 3000 confirmed and probable known Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe), but central star spectroscopic information is available for only 13% of them. We undertook a spectroscopic survey of central stars of PNe at low resolution and compiled a large list of central stars for which information was dispersed in the literature. We present a catalogue of 492 confirmed and probable CSPN and provide a preliminary spectral classification for 45 central star of PNe. This revises previous values of the proportion of CSPN with atmospheres poor in hydrogen in at least 30% of cases and provide statistical information that allows us to infer the origin of H-poor stars. Based on data collected at the Complejo Astronomico El Leoncito (CASLEO), which is operated under agreement between the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas de la Republica Argentina y Universidades Nacionales de La Plata, Cordoba y San Juan, Argentina.
